Welcome to Norfolk 2011. This year’s program features a wonderful group of artists including the King’s Singers, the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, the world-renowned Artis Quartet and many of our perennial Norfolk favorites including the Tokyo String Quartet. And we are especially proud of our Young Artists’ Performance Series that features some of the best young musicians from around the world. You can hear them perform free of charge every Thursday evening and Saturday morning, as well as on two Tuesdays in August.

Charles Ives (1874-1954) is our featured composer in 2011 courtesy of programming grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Charles Ives Society. His music will serve as a catalyst for a season-long exploration of America’s emerging presence on the global cultural scene at the beginning of the twentieth century. No venue could be more appropriate than the extraordinary Music Shed, built in 1906 on the beautiful Estate of Ellen Battell Stoeckel. She must be included on any list of America’s most important Arts patrons.

Discovering Ives in context, we will be able to enjoy plenty of the great chamber music he admired so much; some wonderful works by his European contemporaries; and important recent compositions that he influenced. Much more information about our activities is available on our website www.norfolkmusic.org. Throughout the summer, the site will contain features on our artists and the music they perform, as well as updates on programs, lectures and special ticket offers. Single tickets will be available for sale on the web beginning May 3. Of course you can call (860.542.3000) or email ([email protected]) for subscriptions or individual tickets any time. And if you can’t make a Friday or Saturday evening concert, it will be streamed live on the website.

In keeping with our turn-of-the-century American theme, our cover artist this year is Thomas Moran (1837-1926). Like Charles Ives he devoted his career to applying the techniques and traditions of his contemporary European counterparts to specifically American subjects. His Pond in the Meadow is part of the Battell Stoeckel collection. You can learn more about his work on our website as well.

I look forward very much to seeing you this summer. Bring the family (kids always come free at Norfolk), enjoy the spectacular natural beauty of Norfolk and, most of all, enjoy the Music Among Friends.

Norfolk, CT, is home to the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival and the Yale Summer School of Music. But time spent in Norfolk is about so much more than just the School and the Festival. It’s the kind of weekend destination you’d be hard-pressed to experience anywhere else, and one you won’t soon forget. Norfolk is the quintessential New England town, surrounded by the unspoiled beauty of northwestern Connecticut’s lush forests and rolling hills.

When you are in the area visit the quaint bed and breakfasts, indulge in gourmet dining, or go out for some of the best antiquing in New England. If the charming villages,

country lanes and covered bridges of northwest Connecticut aren’t enough, the Berkshire Hills are only a step away. New York City and Boston are an easy 100 miles by car.

Once you’ve experienced all we have to offer, we know you’ll agree that the region is music for the rest of your senses.

Images clockwise from far left: Campbell Falls; a Norfolk road; the historic Church of Chirst Congregational on the Norfolk town green, a lookout tower built in honor of Robbins Battell on Haystack Mountain; view from the tower on Haystack Mountain including Connecticut, Massachusetts and New York.

One of the world's most celebrated vocal groups, The King's Singers have a packed schedule of concerts, recordings, media and education work that spans the globe. Championing the work of young and established composers, they remain consummate entertainers; aclass-act with a delightfully British wit. From Gesualdo and György Ligeti to Michael Bublé, The King's Singers are instantly recognizable for their spot-on intonation, their impeccable vocal blend, their flawless articulation of the text and incisive timing.

The Charles Ives ProjectAmerican composer Charles Ives is this season’s featured composer. The New Music Workshop, led by composer Martin Bresnick, will feature three concerts of music inspired by Ives as well as some works that inspired Ives himself. We are grateful to James Sinclair, noted Ives scholar and conductor, who has advised us in programming a number of the composer's other works throughout the summer. We hope you will enjoy getting to know this quintessential American composer and Danbury, Connecticut, native.

Norfolk Listening Club Battell Recital Hall - Dates to be Announced

10

Designed to be fun and engaging, the Norfolk Listening Club is an opportunity for both the experienced concertgoer and the classical music novice to enjoy an informal discussion of chamber music among friends, old and new. No background in music necessary - all you need is an active curiosity about music. Our aim is to satisfy your curiosity (or pique it further) and provide a deeper appreciation for the heart of the Festival’s programming: chamber music.

For 2011 Festival Manager James Nelson has crafted a series of four distinct sessions during the summer and throughout the year, each offering something to enhance your listening experience:

I’ve Got A Question (Live Music) - Our brilliant idea to let the audience interrupt the performance at any time to ask a question of the performers. Honest, it works!

Music of Our Season (Recorded Selections) - Highlights from the upcoming summer season, with some hints at what to listen for.

Inside Music (Recorded Selections & Live Music) - For listeners interested in expanding their knowledge of music by learning about the fundamentals of music composition directly from composers, performers and theorists.

Exploring Chamber Music (Recorded Selections) - For the curious listener who wants to hear something old or new, but also different - consider it the listening equivalent of a book club.

You don’t need to sign up for all sessions to participate. Sign up on the Festival’s website (www.norfolkmusic.org) or call us at 860.542.3000 to receive email notices of sessions.
