RICH HISTORY & HERITAGE: Norfolk’s history spans over 400

years of major regional and national events. It all began when John Smith and his crew sailed along our waters looking to establish their first American colonial settlement. Our city was right in the thick of several Revolutionary and American Civil War battles—in fact, still visible is the cannonball lodged into the side of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church dating back to the siege of 1776! You can experience our rich African-American legacy at Underground Railroad stops included in our Cannonball Trail self-guided tour.

THRIVING ART SCENE: You’ve got a front row ticket to

experience our city’s burgeoning art scene at our local studios, museums and performing venues. Check out the working artists’ studios in downtown’s d’ART center, the free daily glass blowing demonstrations at Chrysler Museum’s Glass Studio and live performances at the Harrison Opera House, Wells Theater and even The Parlor on Granby Street in Norfolk’s growing Arts District.

GETTING AROUND: Conveniently located in the city’s

pedestrian-friendly downtown, the new Norfolk Amtrak station provides daily train service to and from our coastal city. The station connects you with the city’s light rail system, The Tide, which allows you to easily tour the city by rail along its 7.5 mile route.

FIDO FRIENDLY: Enjoying Norfolk on four legs has never been easier. Our city’s pedestrian-friendly streets, beaches, parks, hotels and, yes, even restaurants will make you and your furry friend feel right at home! You simply can’t beat our walkability, weather and wide open spaces.

SHOPPER’S DELIGHT: No matter what corner of town you

find yourself in, you’re sure to stumble upon a shopping experience that fits your taste and budget! Don’t miss downtown’s one-million square foot MacArthur Center shopping mall and the eclectic shops lining Granby Street and in Monticello Arcade. While in Ghent, pop into boutiques and antique shops for something truly unique. Or if you’re looking for retail therapy en route back to the airport, The Gallery at Military Circle is a convenient and wallet-friendly option.

urrounding the Historic Ghent neighborhood are the districts of Chelsea, North Colley and beyond—a diverse and delightful blend of

commercial, industrial and local flair.

HISTORYNo history buff’s trip to Norfolk is complete without a visit to historic Fort

Norfolk, located along the Elizabeth River as you head from downtown to the Chelsea District. It is the last remaining of 19 harbor-front forts authorized in 1794 by President George Washington that helped protect the city during the War of 1812. The four-acre site includes earthwork embankments, ramparts, a dungeon, officers’ quarters, powder magazine, barracks and a guardhouse. To get a glimpse into the U.S. Armed Forces more recent history, take a tour of Naval Station Norfolk, the world’s largest naval base. The 45-minute tour takes you dockside to the home of the Atlantic Fleet for an up-close look at aircraft carriers, destroyers and other U.S. Navy vessels protecting our nation everyday.

DININGYou’ve come to the right place for some of the city’s trendiest restaurants and

watering holes. Chelsea’s craft brewery, Smartmouth Brewing Company, is a must for craft beer enthusiasts. This 20-barrel brewhouse typically churns out 100 barrels of hoppy goodness a month and offers a guided tour of the facility and cozy tasting room. From the bite of their India Pale Ale to one of the few Saisons brewed in Virginia, you can get a true taste of our local flavor. Refuel at distinct and delicious neighborhood eateries like Tortilla West, Orapax and The Bakehouse at Chelsea. Continue your tour of tastes at the Birch Bar, Norfolk’s high-profile craft beer and artisanal cheese bar. Named one of the top five bars in America, Birch Bar is housed in a redeveloped industrial building and serves over 20 rotating drafts on tap and dozens more on their weekly bottle list.

ENTERTAINMENTWhile in the area, take time to explore Norfolk’s “home to the arts”, the

Hermitage Museum and Gardens. Formerly home to the Sloane family, the museum boasts a nationally recognized art collection spanning 5,000 years! The Hermitage also includes contemporary exhibition galleries, working artist studios and 12 acres of gardens and grounds along the peaceful waters of the Lafayette River. Catch a basketball game or headlining musical performance at the Ted Constant Convocation Center. If you’re looking for a cozier, café-style performance space, check out the Venue on 35th for weekly open mic events and local performances. Or tee off at Lambert’s Point Golf Club, a beautiful links-style, nine-hole golf course on the banks of the Elizabeth River.

HISTORYThe area’s unique history date’s back

hundreds of years and is full of interesting discoveries. Ocean View’s Willoughby Spit, an independent peninsula originally inhabited by The Willoughby Family, has been a favorite Norfolk marvel since it first appeared as a result of a mid-1600’s hurricane. Where there once had been only water now lies a serene strip of land created by Mother Nature. Past times at the beaches, neighborhoods and commercial districts of Ocean View are lovingly preserved and shared in collections of memorabilia, images and oral histories at the Ocean View Station Museum.

ENTERTAINMENTThere’s no better way to enjoy the

neighborhood than a day at the beach! This area is home to several city beaches on the Chesapeake Bay. The City of Norfolk maintains three beach parks including the Community Beach Park, Sarah Constant Beach Park and Ocean View Beach Park. Grab the family or your friends and head out for a relaxing afternoon of sunbathing and swimming! Enjoy fishing on the Ocean View Fishing Pier and if you’re hungry, grab a bite to eat at the pier’s onsite restaurant, known for its super fresh seafood. Or if you’d prefer to stay on land, schedule a round of golf at the Ocean View Golf Course located one block from the Chesapeake Bay and marina.

Norfolk’s thriving arts community will welcome you into its studios, galleries and up and down the streets of its Arts District and beyond. Throughout the city, almost everywhere you turn you’re bound to

stumble upon artwork—from classically beautiful statues to thought-provoking and abstract mixed-media installations. Downtown Norfolk and surrounding neighborhoods give proof to Norfolk’s flourishing arts scene and status as the cultural hub of southeastern Virginia.

While touring Norfolk, keep an eye out for purposefully placed public art pieces ranging in media, location, theme, scale and style. The Norfolk Public Art Program strategically focuses its efforts in locations with the most visible impact to be viewed and enjoyed by the maximum number of people. Be on the lookout along the waterfront, pedestrian walkways and sidewalks, parks, wall and even city garages. Some of the most impressive pieces include the large scale, white concrete formation “Ripples” by Athena Tacha, the Electroland “Metalmatisse” near MacArthur Square in downtown and Christopher Fennell’s “Skate Trees and Leaf Benches” at Northside Skate Park.

You don’t have to look very hard to find yet another example of the city’s flair for the arts. Popping up throughout town, you’ll find ornate,

thoughtfully crafted mermaid statues. Posing gracefully at street corners and storefronts, decorating banners and signs, and showing up in local art shops and galleries, the cultural icon of Norfolk has been a major artistic motif for over 15 years. The mermaids are all designed and decorated by locals, and many of them represent a theme related to their location and illustrate the value of public art in our community.

For maps of the artworks, background information and additional resources visit www.norfolkpublicart.org or pay a visit to the Selden Arcade and Art Gallery in downtown Norfolk.

JAMESTOWN SETTLEMENT, YORKTOWN VICTORY CENTERLiving-History Museums Chronicle Nation’s Beginnings

A hands-on history experience awaits visitors at two Williamsburg area museums that explore the nation’s beginnings. At Jamestown Settlement, gallery exhibits chronicle 1600s Virginia in the context of its Powhatan Indian, English and African cultures, complementing historical interpretation at outdoor re-creations of a Powhatan Indian village, the three ships that brought America’s first permanent English colonists in 1607, and colonial fort. The story of the American Revolution, from the beginnings of colonial unrest to the formation of the new nation, unfolds at the Yorktown Victory Center through indoor exhibits and outdoor re-creations of a Continental Army encampment and Revolution-period farm. The museums are open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily except Christmas and New Year’s days. For more information call (888) 593-4682 or visit www.historyisfun.org.

Virginia ArtsFestival

The soul of a great arts festival is the exhilarating sense of discovery that greets the patron

at every performance. There is so much to discover and enjoy during

the 2015 Virginia Arts Festival, April 10 – May 25. The Festival strives to present the world’s greatest artists in music, dance, and theater, and the 19th season certainly lives up to this mission.

Star turns include two strikingly different divas at the top of their careers: reigning queen of opera Renée Fleming, whose popular style has earned her a place in the hearts of audiences worldwide, accompanied by award-winning pianist Olga Kern, and Audra McDonald, the Broadway star who has won more Tony Awards than anyone in history.

Other exciting performers include Rosanne Cash, the iconic singer-songwriter whose most recent album, The River & The Thread, won rave reviews from NPR and The New York Times, and Jackie Evancho, the young classical crossover singer who first gained stardom on America’s Got Talent at the age of 10. Pulitzer Prize and nine-time Grammy Award-winning jazz legend Wynton Marsalis will also perform with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra in the historic Attucks Theater.

The array of artists and experiences in the 2015 season offer some rare and enticing opportunities for classical music fans. Conductor JoAnn Falletta reveals new beauty in works from past centuries with a brilliant performance of Bartók’s only opera, Bluebeard’s Castle, with towering glass sculptures

by famed artist Dale Chihuly, an astounding, intimate performance of Mahler’s most achingly beautiful songs in rarely-heard arrangements by Arnold Schoenberg, and a witty staging of Stravinsky’s The Soldier’s Tale featuring stunning violinist Tianwa Yang and NPR’s Fred Child as the narrator. Dance will be spectacularly represented in the Festival when the proud and passionate Ballet Hispanico ignites the stage with the fire and soul of Latin culture.

Theater buffs can sample one of the most celebrated comedy hits of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Major Tom—the story of a woman, her dog, and their parallel careers in dog shows and beauty pageants. Gabriel Portuondo will perform The Rime, a remarkable theatricalization of “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner”.

The Festival’s most popular event among audiences from around the area and world, the Virginia International Tattoo, returns April 23-26 with an awe-inspiring spectacle of music and might, featuring performers from Australia, Canada, Denmark, Finland, the Republic of Korea, the United Kingdom, and the United States to honor our military families.Spring is a great time to come to Norfolk to attend Virginia Arts Festival performances and visit the many other wonderful attractions in the area.

For more information and tickets to Virginia Arts Festival performances, visit vafest.org or call 757-282-2822.
