His career (from his 1st published painting to his last) was 51 yrs. from 1912-1963
At 19 he was the art editor of Boy’s life magazine During World War I he tried to enlist, but at 140
lbs. he was 6 lbs. underweight he spent the night gorging himself on bananas, liquids, and doughnuts and was allowed entry the next day. He was given Military Artist and did not see any action during his time of service.
How did he die?
• He died on November 8th, 1978 of emphysema (a lung disease caused by tobacco smoke-he had a pipe). The 1st lady (Rosalynn Carter) attended his funeral.
