We had a large interclub group attend and enjoy the beginnings of the new club which we are sponsoring, along with the Kiwanis Club of Conway. President Donna Harts pre- sented them with a beautiful set of flags and a check from our club or $100. It was exciting to learn that they have 28 mem- bers to begin as they get their charter. Bill Burgin worked with MO-ARK New Club Builder Tom Sullivan recruiting members and now it is an exciting addition to our Division 21B. Steve Mills, Faculty Advisor to BY MARV KEE Kathryn Heller (above), who is the Programming and Outreach Coordinator for the Butler Center, spoke to the club Thursday. What is the Butler Center? The Butler Center for Arkansas Studies, a department of the Central Arkansas Library System (CALS), was created in 1997 through an endowment by the late Richard C. Butler Sr. for the purpose of promoting a greater understanding and appreciation of Arkansas history, literature, art, and culture. The research collections and offices are located in the Arkansas Studies Institute (ASI) at 401 President Clinton Ave, located on the Main Library campus in the River Market area. The ASI is a partnership between CALS and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, through which the two institutions have made more than 10 million docu- ments and photographs on Arkansas history available for public use. Heller showed a visual presentation of posters of vintage movies with an Arkansas connection. These are currently on display at Concordia Hall in the Arkansas Studies Institute on the main library campus. All present had a good and interesting time guessing the connection to Arkansas of the few she showed. There are 35 total in the col- lection. Interestingly, most of the movies that were truly about Arkansas chose to show the state in a less than favorable light – like we are a bunch of “hicks” in Arkansas. Thankfully, that image has all but disappeared nowadays. Posters such as the ones for movies featuring old time comedians such as Lum and Abner and Bob Burns and others like “The Legend of Bogey Creek”; and “True Grit” had Arkansas connections. It was a good program and you can learn more about the Butler Center at www. butlercenter.org. Program Next Week, February 2: Shara Brazear will speak about the extremely vital school election coming regarding a request for higher tax milleage to make big changes in NLR Schools. It’s almost a “do or die” situation and we need to learn more about it.

Kiwanis Club of North Little Rock

Thursday’s Meeting -- Continued from Page l

our Key Clubs and our Vice President, asked for help for the Key Club of NLR East Campus in manning the concession stand at the school basketball games on Monday, January 27 and again on February 2 in the East Campus gym. Please be there at 4:00 PM. Sherrie Rine passed out 10 tickets to each member to sell for our Pancake Breakfast at Applebee’s which is Saturday, February 25, 8:00 to 10:00 AM. Please sell these tickets. This fundraiser has to fill in for two projects we have given up so we must make more than we have in years past. One way to raise what we need to raise is to ask for donations from businesses or individuals and give them the tickets as appreciation for them to hand out to friends or customers. Of course, each member is responsible for returning the tickets if not sold. But let’s sell’em! The next meeting of the fundraising committee is at 1:00 PM in Sherrie Rine’s office at 3615 JFK Blvd. on February 8. Final plans for the Pancake Breakfast will be made at that time so please -- everyone -- be there. One thing that will be discussed in which we need broad input from members is the possibility of a SKEET SHOOT at Remington Arms on I-40 like the Kiwanis Club of West Little Rock once had as a suc-cessful fundraiser. Chairman Jim Lincicome said that the Kiwanis Reading Club is getting ready to ramp up. We give books to 10 elementary schools, three distributions each, to all 4th graders and every member is asked to help. We have a person responsible for each school already chosen except for Amboy. That person will work with the school principals to set the date and time when we take the books there. So pick your time and school. Contributions to the Happy Box for our Administrative Fund: Donna Harts was happy to see Leonard Montgomery present after an accident in which he may have a fracture. She was also happy for the start of the Maumelle club. Robert Copeland was also happy and said “Gruber is really good!”, referring to Gruber’s lead-ing the opening song. So happy, in fact, that he told a joke: A man in a gym asked his trainer if there was a machine he could use to impress the beautiful woman he saw in the gym.”Yes,” the trainer said, “an ATM machine.” Scott Wheeler was happy to make his annual visit to the club. He said he was glad to be back and would try to make it more than one a year. Hope so, Scott. We remember the great job you did as President and the great work you have done for Kiwanis over the years. Judge Gruber was happy to be back and was sure he saw a tear in Jim Lincicome’s eye when he led the singing. Not sure if it was the singing or being passed over to lead it himself. Sherrie Rine was happy not being asked to lead the song. She was also happy for the input from everyone on the color for a banner for our Pancake Breakfast. Howard Harts was happy to be present and happy for the fundraiser committee meeting on February 8. Bill Whitmore was happy for his son who turned 17 and his wife, Meredith’s birthdays.

Welcome, Kiwanis Club of MaumelleAt the organizational meeting Wednesday. Of-ficers (right) and Donna Harts (far right) present-ing our check for $100.
