Report on the January Meeting

Title: “Masters of Mirth”

Speaker : Mike Storr

Lincoln born and bred and an hereditary Freeman of the City of Lincoln,Mike Storr entertained us royally. With his experience of beingPresident of the Rotary Club of Carlton in Nottinghamshire, for 35years and performing in amateur productions, he quickly captured hisaudience. His light-hearted presentation about Music Hall Stars of thepast was easily identified by the audience who were familiar with manyof the catch phrases of stars such as Sandy Powell, Arthur Askey, MaxMiller and George Formby. His rendition of Robb Wilton’s well- lovedskit about the Home Guard was excellent, capturing the accent andtone of the original script. He paid tribute to Marriott Edgar who usedhistorical themes for his comic monologues and the raconteur GerardHoffnung.

Our spirits were lifted by this entertaining presentation and we wishMike further success in his worthwhile aim to raise money for Asthma.

A tribute to the kindness of our U3A members.

When I arrived for the January Monthly meeting finding a spare seatwas difficult, unless I chose to sit at the side. As the meetingprogressed I began to find the wooden bench less and lesscomfortable. A fellow member got up and moved along the back rowof seats so he could exit into the foyer. I was beginning to loseconcentration on the guest speaker’s talk when suddenly I had thefeeling that I was going to faint. I had to move quickly so I did what theprevious member had done and made my way past other memberssitting on the back row. The next thing I knew I was in a chair in thefoyer surrounded by the concerned faces of members who had clearlycaught me before I passed out. The concern changed to smiles allround as my eyes opened and I started to regain consciousness. SlowlyI started asking about what had happened. There was a lovely senseamongst us all of human warmth and care, even if we didn’t reallyknow one another. Discovering that I had come to the meeting in mycar one person offered to collect it from the car park so he could driveme home. I accepted his offer, grateful to all that I had made it in onepiece and no harm done.

So why had I fainted? On reflection I now realise that I had put toomany layers on to cope with the very cold temperatures on thatparticular day. I should have removed at least two layers once inside. The combination of body heat from a crowded meeting with thecentral heating warmth proved too much for my system. Faintingbecame the obvious reaction to the problem. I have learnt a hard lesson from all this, but in doing so I have alsoexperienced the kindness of our U3A members when such incidentsoccur. Hence this tribute to them all.

January Meeting

We met this month to discuss Christmas Cards. Everybody brought inexamples of a good card and of course of a not so pleasing one. It wasreally interesting to hear all the various reasons for the deeplyindividual choices. Some liked glitter, others preferred a moreminimalistic design, some liked bright, multicoloured cards, one or twofound muted shades or a festive red and green more pleasing. Wewere amazed how many different styles are on offer. We agreed, thatopening a Christmas Card is so exciting: What design will lead to themessage inside? From now on, surely, we all will be putting moreinformed thoughts into the purchase of our Christmas Cards.

Then we collected ideas for the next meetings.

February: 10.2.2017 Lutterworth Golf Club. 14.00pm-16.00pmSubject: ‘The language of colours’ Each member has chosen a colour and will report back to the group itsspecific qualities.

In 2017 for our fiction choices the group have decided to revisitauthors we have read before. We started with Tracy Chevalier and GirlWith a Pearl Earring.

Set in 1664 this tells the fictional story of the girl in the Vermeerportrait. In reality no one knows who she was but Chevalier makes aninteresting and believable story of the girl and how the portrait cameto be painted.

The book is very informative about the times, the location and theprocess of painting as exercised by Vermeer. With wonderfullydescriptive writing we can feel ourselves in 17th century Delft. Allmembers enjoyed the book and agreed it was an easy read althoughsome preferred the previous book Remarkable Creatures by thisauthor.

BOOK GROUPCo-ordinator Anne Dean01455 [email protected]

We didn’t meet in December so had two books to discuss:Life after Life by Kate Atkinson and A Spool of Blue Thread by Anne Tyler.

Life after Life “What if you had the chance to live your life again and again until you finally got it right”

Kate Atkinson is a clever author and in this book she plays with time and history.

Ursula Todd is born and keeps being re-born, living and dying through the events of the first half of the 20th century. She has another start at life, another chance, and this pattern is repeated. Each life takes a different direction as her decisions and reactions to events change each time.

We enjoyed the book but we all felt that towards the end it became a little confusing and over complicated as there are perhaps too many ‘lives’. It is a long, complex book which probably warrants a second reading to clarify some of the story.

A Spool of Blue ThreadThis is a family saga about three generations of Whitshanks with their secrets, opinions and history. They are not outstanding but a very

ordinary Baltimore family. It is a slow paced book and never seems to reach a climax, leaving many unanswered questions.

We had differing opinions about the book, but decided it wasn’t one of the author’s best works.

Title : "Running a Motor Race Meeting”

Speaker: Brian Poulter

January started out with a really good turn out at the one stop shop fora long awaited talk by Brian Poulter on just what it takes to put on aMotor race meeting. Testament to the interest for this talk from themembers, we had to muster lots of extra chairs from other rooms toseat everyone.

Brian first illustrated the family tree of the Motor Sports Governingbodies, starting from the very top with the FIA and cascaded downthrough the various levels and organisations both international,European and British explaining responsibilities, regulations and howthey effect the club or racing driver at each level.

It is quite remarkable how many race officials/marshals are required toadminister even a local event like Mallory park, and the numbers riseto over 200 posts as a minimum for a F1GP, this excludes any teammembers, PR, catering, Media or commercial people - oh andspectators of course.

Brian currently acts as Clark of the course /Steward for the one makerace series of Radical sports cars and relayed just what he’s involved inthroughout his racing season which include knowing the rule bookinside and out.

Clearly there was so much of interest and detail in Brian talk that it isimpossible to give it justice here, however my sincere thanks to Brianfor making this talk one of the best in-house events we have had so far.

Next Event will be on 23rd Feb at HOLOVIS for a bit of "Virtual Reality”experience , so anyone wishing to go should contact AndyHetherington who is organising this event for the group.

GARDEN GROUPCo-ordinator:Sue Creeden 01455 557888

For our January meeting, Sally Cunningham came to the One Stop Shopto talk about Growing Unusual Vegetables.

Sally is a local horticulturalist and lecturer with special interests inorganic gardening and exotic, particularly Asian, vegetables. She hasgathered a lot of her knowledge from allotment holders in the area andis heavily involved in test growing at Ryton. She brought along samplesand pictures of vegetables and spices, some of which are available inour supermarkets, others we had never heard of! She explained thatsome are easy to grow outside, although perhaps needing a longgrowing season, whilst others, originating from warmer climates, require the protection of a greenhouse or conservatory.

Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, 28th February when, fingerscrossed, we will wander through the snowdrops at Launde Abbey, EastNorton, LE7 9XB. Should the weather be a little uninviting, we canalways enjoy the cream tea and inspect the snowdrops from inside! The minibus will leave Lutterworth Leisure Centre at 1.00 p.m. and beback by 5.00 p.m. The inclusive cost is £11.50.

If you would like to come, please let me know as soon as possible on01455 557888 or email [email protected].

LIVELY DISCUSSIONCo-ordinator:Dot Barnard 01455 208190

January 9th 2017

Should we re-introduce grammar schools?

The discussion began with a brief history of grammar schools. Theiroriginal purpose was to teach Latin to future priests and monks so theywere usually attached to churches and monasteries. The curriculumwas gradually broadened to include Ancient Greek and other usefulsubjects such as music and verse for the liturgy, astronomy and mathsfor the Church calendar and law for administrative purposes. The firstwas the King’s School founded in Canterbury in 597, closely followed in604 by the King’s School in Rochester. The first universities werefounded in 12th century and grammar schools became the entry points.Pupils were educated up to the age of 14 and then looked to theChurch or universities for further education. The first schoolsindependent of the Church were Winchester in 1382, Oswestry in 1407and Eton in 1440. Bridgnorth Grammar School was founded in 1503 bythe local borough council and was the first to be independent of bothChurch and university.

Leicester’s first grammar school was built by Thomas Wyggestonaround 1573 using his brother, William’s estate. Days were long, 5amto 5pm in summer and 7am to 5pm in winter.

In his short reign Edward VI (1547 – 1553) funded many grammarschools. They were open to all and free to those couldn’t afford thefees. Few poor children attended as their labour was very important totheir families.

18

Page 19: NOTICE OF ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING OF WYCLIFFE LUTTERWORTH ... · Monthly Meetings Welcome to the Wycliffe U3A. We meet on second Thursday of each month at the Methodist Church Hall

The Grammar School Act 1840 made it possible to fund other subjects, not just classical languages. The 1944 Education Act created the firstnationwide 3 tier system of state secondary education in England andWales:

Grammar Schools which sought to spread the academic ethosof existing grammar schools to the most intellectually able 25%of the school population and who were likely to progress tohigher education. The 11+ examination was used for selection.

Technical Schools which were to provide for more technicalskills to the middle tier of ability, but only a few were created. However, they allowed easy passage for late developers andgood preparation for apprenticeships.

Secondary Modern Schools to prepare pupils for the trades.

Everything changed from 1950s onwards. Labour politicians andegalitarian educationalists disliked a system which they thoughtreinforced class divisions and middle class privilege. By 1965 thegovernment ordered LEAs to start phasing out grammar schools andsecondary moderns in favour of comprehensive schools. This happenedquickest in strong Labour areas. However in strong Conservative areasit happened slowly or not at all. Kent, Buckinghamshire, Lincolnshire,Medway and Essex remain selective. In 1988 the Labour Governmentbanned the establishment of any new all selective schools. Currently, the Labour Party is opposed to grammar schools, the Conservatives arein favour of allowing all good schools to expand and Liberal democratsseem to favour the status quo. Theresa May seems prepared to allownew grammar schools by a ‘back door’ annexe system and Tonbridgewill open its annexe in Sevenoaks this year.

19

Page 20: NOTICE OF ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING OF WYCLIFFE LUTTERWORTH ... · Monthly Meetings Welcome to the Wycliffe U3A. We meet on second Thursday of each month at the Methodist Church Hall

After this excellent introduction the group had the longest discussionof a topic we’ve ever had. Most in the room had been to grammar, direct grant or private schools. A couple had been to technical orsecondary modern schools. Some had also taught in various places.Everyone praised the education given by grammar schools. However, much concern was expressed about the disadvantages to those notlucky or good enough to be within the top 25% on ability. It was feltthat often parental support and influence was instrumental in where achild was placed. The group felt that comprehensive schools often heldback the most able pupils. Teachers’ abilities and standing have beendenigrated by successive government ministers, and some havebecome demotivated to the detriment of their pupils and themselves.Several people expressed the view that education has been politicisedand we are very concerned as children only get one opportunity fortheir education. Many would go back to the 3 tier system describedearlier. Not only because different people are suitable for practical, aswell as academic jobs, but it allowed much more flexibility andopportunity for late developers.

Interestingly after the current government action on narrowing thecurriculum to core subjects, when pupils themselves were asked whatthey wanted in addition to the basics they asked for an explanation ofthe UK economy, how to pay taxes, life skills, DIY skills, more history, visits to hospitals and police stations and one person wanted just towrite stories. In general they are concerned that they aren’t beingproperly prepared for the world they will enter. All the chopping andchanging of systems and curriculums doesn’t seem to have worked asthis country is way below many other countries notably Singapore andsome places in Eastern Europe in educational achievements.

In conclusion some are very much in favour of re-introducing grammarschools, but others are concerned about further disadvantaging those

who don’t pass the 11+. We would prefer to see a return to the 3 tiersystem, and a reinstatement of respect and standing for teachers asthey literally hold the future of this country in their hands.

Poetry Notes 26th January

The theme was “clothes (and the bodies beneath)” and this proved tobe a subject of great amusement, as indeed it was in 2011 when thegroup chose a similar theme (thanks to Dot for bringing the notes fromthat far away session).

Most of the poems we read were funny, some of them really veryfunny ( try Roald Dahl’s “A Hand in the Bird” if you want to brighten upyour day.) The laughs came mostly from Pam Ayres, Roger McGough,Wendy Cope, Roald Dahl and Edward Lear, along with several lesserknown poets. Indeed , our resident poet Margery read a very goodlimerick she had written herself.

On the serious side we read Simon Armitage with his fascinatingly vividtake on the human body, Victoria Bedel’s “Bedecked” on a young sonwho insists on dressing up in glitter and finery, Carol Ann Duffy’ssensuous and sexy “Warming her Pearls” and Julia Alvarez’s thoughtprovoking “Ironing their Clothes” which cleverly identifies the clothesbeing ironed with the relationship to the person who wore them – “With a hot glide up, then down, his shirts, I ironed out my father'sback, cramped and worried with work. “

The next topic, for February 23rd, will be “Emotions (except Love”, andfor March 23rd we have chosen “Colours”.

Lane to the mill and then across fields towards Broughton Astleybefore turning to Dunton Basset. There were then a couple of muddyfields to negotiate. After a little loop through Dunton Basset westopped in the churchyard for refreshments. We then picked up LittleLunnon for a little way before heading off down a track towards thequarry turning before it to eventually reach Dunton Mill. CrossingDunton lane we then crossed fields to Leire Lane and then returned toLeire along the road. A lot of us finished off a very pleasant walk withan extremely good lunch at The Queens Arms.

Bird Talk

The swallows skimmed the surfaceThe ducks went deeperThe kestrels wavered

The flamingos stood their groundThe woodpeckers picked holes

The ostriches took it in their strideThe skylarks were up in the air

The kiwis kept their feet on the groundThe buzzards went round in circles

The crows came straight to the pointThe robins called a spade a spadeThe albatross took the wider view

The parrots expressed themselves colourfullyThe condors assumed the high ground

The petrels were all at seaThe owls were completely in the dark

The wrynecks spoke obliquelyThe peacocks showed their true colours

The thrushes opened a new can of wormsThe vultures had some bones to pick

The pigeons couldn’t see the wood for the treesThe weaver birds tied up the loose ends
