THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD

THE STAR OF BETHLEHEM

The unfolding of the story of the Incarnation continues today as the Church celebrates the Epiphany. The tale of the magi from the East is one of the most fascinating in all of scripture. It has much to teach us about what we can come to expect, even in circumstances and places that may seem insignificant or small. Bethlehem was a tiny town, what we might refer to today as a town without even one stop light. Yet it is over this seemingly insignificant place that the guiding star stops in its own search for the place where the Savior would be born. Too often we fail to recognize the fact that

the star of Bethlehem comes to rest in our everyday lives, where we can experience God’s presence, manifested in ever new ways. Epiphany calls us to shake off our stupor and recognize the One who comes to save us.

ROSES FOR LIFE DRIVE 2017

Next weekend of January 14 & 15, 2017, the Elizabeth Ann Seton Council Knights of Columbus will be having their annual Roses for Life Drive after all weekend Masses here at Notre Dame. The drive will be helping support the programs at Birth Haven of Newton and Several Sources Shelters, two organizations that provide transitional housing and all the appropriate support services including medical for young pregnant women.

These young distressed pregnant mothers are made to feel wanted and loved and are supported in a loving, caring environment. These young women often have nowhere else to turn to and these two organizations provide the help and emotional support needed. The little rose appliqué we hand out symbolizes our support for life in all of its stages and our carrying out of Jesus’ admonition to “take care of the little ones.”

As you leave church on those days, please help support the Knights of Columbus in this very worthy cause, and may God bless you for all of your prayers and generosity. Please make any checks payable to K of C #6904.

LETTING GO OF OLD HURTS A meditation by Henri Nouwen

One of the hardest things in life is to let go of old hurts. We often say, or at least think: "What you did to me and my family, my ancestors, or my friends I cannot forget or forgive. ... One day you will have to pay for it." Sometimes our memories are decades, even centuries, old and keep asking for revenge.

Holding people's faults against them often creates an impenetrable wall. But listen to Paul: "For anyone who is in Christ, there is a new creation: the old order is gone and a new being is there to see. It is all God's work" (2 Corinthians 5:17-18). Indeed, we cannot let go of old hurts, but God can. Paul says: "God was in

Christ reconciling the world to himself, not holding anyone's fault against them" (2 Corinthians 5:19). It is God's work, but we are God's ministers, because the God who reconciled the world to God entrusted to us "the message of reconciliation" (2 Corinthians 5:19). This message calls us to let go of old hurts in the Name of God. It is the message our world most needs to hear.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION This year, in the United States the celebration of the Epiphany falls on January 8, but the traditional date for the Epiphany is January 6. The date we know as January 6 was established as the solstice in Egypt in 1996 BC, but the Egyptian calendar lost a full day every 128 years. Twenty centuries later the actual solstice had migrated to December 25. People still kept January 6 for the solstice celebration, but December 25, matching nicely with the Roman pagan feast of the Unconquered Sun, launched an extended solstice holiday. By the time of the early church, the whole period of twelve days was celebrated just about everywhere.

Christians began to celebrate Christ as the true light of the world in four themes: the Nativity, the manifestation to the Gentiles, the baptism of the Lord, and the wedding feast at Cana. That was entirely too much for one day to handle. A twelve-day season was ready to be adapted, so Christians borrowed from the pagan calendar for their own season of light. Thus early Christian celebrations of the Christmas season extended from one date for the solstice, December 25, to the older date, January 6. The darkest time in the Northern Hemisphere could now be filled with the Christian observance of the arrival of the Light of the World.

Trust in God's word doesn't mean we won't have moments of uncertainty, disappointment and bewilderment.

POPE FRANCIS: “COMPLAINING TO GOD CAN BE A FORM OF PRAYER”

Dear Brothers and Sisters: Our continuing catechesis on Christian hope leads us to consider the example of Abraham, who, as Saint Paul tells us, “hoped against hope” in God’s promises.

Trusting in the Lord’s word that a son would be born to him, Abraham left his home for a new land. Although the fulfillment of God’s promise was long delayed and seemed to be impossible, Abraham continued to hope. Even his discouragement and complaints were a sign of his continuing trust in God.

Abraham, our father in faith, shows us that sure trust in God’s word does not mean that we will not have moments of uncertainty, disappointment and bewilderment. It was at such a moment that God appeared to Abraham, called him forth from his tent and showed him the night sky shining with countless stars, assuring him that such would be the number of his descendants.

Hope is always directed to the future, to the fulfillment of God’s promises. May the example of Abraham teach us not be afraid to go out from our own tents, our limited outlooks, and to lift our eyes to the stars.

Official English summary of Pope Francis’ Wednesday 12/28/16 catechesis on hope. - See more at: http://aleteia.org/
