Reflections on the Sunday Scripture

November 11, 2018

Thirty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Readings:

1 Kings 17:10-16 Hebrews 9:24-28 Mark 12:38-44

Gospel

In the course of his teaching Jesus said to the crowds, "Beware of the scribes, who like to go around in long robes and accept greetings in the marketplaces, seats of honor in synagogues, and places of honor at banquets. They devour the houses of widows and, as a pretext recite lengthy prayers. They will receive a very severe condemnation."

He sat down opposite the treasury and observed how the crowd put money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. A poor widow also came and put in two small coins worth a few cents. Calling his disciples to himself, he said to them, "Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the other contributors to the treasury. For they have all contributed from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has contributed all she had, her whole livelihood."

1. Have you been a victim (deceived) by someone who took pity on you, but then took everything from you? Have you ever met the “widow” of today’s Gospel?

2. When you had a lot of money and you gave, how did you feel? When you had little to give, but gave much, did you have a different feeling? What was that feeling? Can you now relate to the Gospel?

3. Is giving more (or all you have) an action of your great generosity, or is it because of your faith and your love for God? Jesus is showing us that the poor widow who gave did need the money more than the temple, so it was not action, but her faith and her relationship with God to give all she could. What is your relationship with God?

(continued)

4. After you have helped someone in need, have you ever experienced God returning to you more than you gave? If so, in what ways?

5. Has God ever failed to meet your needs? If so, do you know why? Perhaps it was only what you thought you needed?

While we are

busy celebrating

Veterans’ Day,

and remembering

those who have

served our country,

our Polish friends

are also celebrating

a very special day

in their history.

Congratulations

Our Lady of Czestochowa, pray for us!

It flies with the last breath of each soldier who dies protecting it.

Two thoughts for today:

Isn’t it strange. . . .

how we believe everything that

magazines and newspapers say—but we

question the words in the Bible?

Isn’t it strange. . . .

how everyone wants a place in

Heaven—but they don’t want to

believe, do, or say

anything to get there?

Just think about it!

A V A I L A B L E 2 0 1 8 M A S S I N T E N T I O N S

Since the St. Mark 2018 Mass Book is full, we are offering the opportunity for you to have

Masses said by either Father Rafal Glinkowski or Father Sebastian Hanks at our Pauline Fathers

Monastery in Kittanning, PA. These Masses will be announced in the bulletin on the

first weekend of the month following the month in which the Masses were offered.

Also, the St. Mark Mass Society offers you the opportunity to offer Masses for an entire year

for yourself or a loved one. Those enrolled in the Mass Society are prayed for at the

8:00 AM Mass on the First Saturday of each month for 12 months.

Offering a Mass for someone is one of the best gifts you can give them, whether to celebrate a birthday or anniversary or to offer healing to someone sick.

Cards are $10, and there are several different styles from which you can choose.

Forty Hours’ Devotions

Begin Sunday, November 18th.

Forty Hours’ Devotion - What is it all about?

The Forty Hours’ Devotion is a kind of retreat experience for the entire parish. It is an opportunity to “unplug,” to gather both

individually and as a community before the Blessed Sacrament, to pray before the Lord,

to deepen our appreciation of the importance of Him, to recognize His presence in our daily lives.

The number “40” calls to mind the rains during the time of Noah which lasted 40 days and 40

nights; Moses and the Jewish people in the desert for 40 years; and our Lord’s 40 days of fasting

and prayer before beginning His public ministry. The Forty Hours’ Devotion also recalls that

traditional “40-hour period” from our Lord’s burial until the resurrection.

Please commit to spend an hour with our Lord. Volunteers are especially needed for the late

hours thru the night. Consider having a friend join you for the hour.

Sign-up sheets are located in the Narthex.

The Forty Hours’ Schedule is as follows:

Sunday, November 18th, begins after the 12:00 Noon Mass, with Exposition in the Chapel.

Sunday Evening there will be Vespers at 4:00 PM.

Monday and Tuesday Morning Masses will be the regular 7:30 AM and 8:30 AM Mass times.

(Exposition will be suspended from just before the 7:30 Mass until after the 8:30 Mass each day.)

Tuesday, November 20th, Exposition and Closing of Forty Hours will take place at 12:00 Noon .

Come and spend some time with our Lord!

Especially something very useful? Have you ever considered becoming a Sacristan?

The time is now — the need is now.

Please consider serving the Lord in a special way by serving as a Sacristan.

As a Sacristan, you will assist in preparing the Church or Chapel for the celebration of Mass
