Hello and welcome to this month’s Global Video Insights Report.

There’s no arguing the cultural and practical importance of social media. Just recently, Hurricane Sandy hit the east coast of America. Social media services Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram updated people on storm-related news, kept them in touch with friends and family, and even helped to support victims in the aftermath of the storm. And the hurricane is just one example of the power of social media.

When you combine the virtues of social media with the engagement inherent to mobile video, you hit on something that is truly magic. A recent Vuclip survey of more than 200,000 people in India, Indonesia, UAE and the U.S. showed that a large number of respondents already share mobile video socially. This has tremendous implications for the way that we connect with each other. I hope you think this is as exciting as we do.

This week at Vuclip we were thrilled to celebrate our Series D fundraising led by SingTel Innov8, a new strategic investor, and existing investors NEA and Jafco Ventures. Check out our announcement and new corporate website here. I hope you enjoy this month’s report.

Cheers, Judith Coley Vice President, Marketing

Trends in Social Media and Mobile Video

We recently surveyed our global users on their social media habits. Over seven days we collected more than 200,000 responses from India, Indonesia, the U.S. and UAE. We specifically tracked the most used social media platforms, how frequently people use social media, and how likely they are to share mobile videos via social media. See below for the results.

Social media popularity remains the same no matter which country you focus on. Facebook is clearly king. Beyond the massive reach of Facebook, it’s interesting to note that Google+ captures more users than Twitter in these four key markets.

We know that social media use for sharing mobile video is hot, because we see that more than 65% of mobile videos on Vuclip are shared socially. Our survey confirmed what we’ve seen over the past few years. The majority of our respondents said that they either share mobile video socially or would if their mobile video provider supported their social networks.

Film director, producer and screenwriter Subash Ghai, also known as the “showman” of Hindi cinema is back with ‘Kaanchi’. Famous for his rich themes, we’ll see what this grandiose director offers with his latest musical love story. In October, ‘Kaanchi’ ranked #8 in our top India searches.

Spotlight on India The Indian comedy-drama English Vinglish marked a successful comeback of evergreen actress Sridevi after a 14-year sabbatical. Not only did the movie teach many homemakers how to speak English, but it also turned out to be a tale of women’s empowerment. The movie did well in India and overseas by registering more than 360,000 searches on mobile videos in just two weeks on Vuclip’s Starlight Cinema portal.

Yash Chopra, Bollywood’s King of Romance, left an indelible mark on the cinema world.

After his passing, we saw a massive influx of interest in his last film ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’. The film grabbed three out of our top four

spots. His death left his fans yearning for clips from their favorite film-maker throughout

the month. A very popular song, ‘Pairo mein Bandhan Hai’, from his movie ‘Mohabbatein’,

landed at #8 in the top ten videos list.

While romances and dramas continue to entice Indian movie audiences, horror flicks have gradually started to make their moves. Directed by Vikram Bhatt, ‘1920 Evil Returns’ is a quasi-sequel of the 2008 film ‘1920’. The scary movie had a great opening weekend and grabbed fifth position in the top 10 India videos this month.

This October was the season of Hajj, which means “pilgrimage.” Muslims of the world turned their hearts towards Mecca, Saudi Arabia. It is one of the largest pilgrimages in the world, and one that every able-bodied Muslim must carry out at least once. With Hajj as a demonstration of the solidarity of the Muslim people, it’s no surprise that our top search this month was “rites of passage” and that many of our ten videos were about this massive pilgrimage.

Spotlight on UAE Our most-watched video in the UAE this month was about Sheikh Zayed leading a poetry-themed seminar, including a discussion with a group of poets and renowned intellectuals.
