Helen Dennis Author Visit

Prizewinning Sussex author Helen Dennis met Years 7 and 8 to encourage their own creative writing and introduce her two fantastic series of adventure stories. Starting by explaining how her own teacher in Year 7 inspired the class by spending the whole day reading JRR Tolkien’s fantasy novel The Hobbit - and acting it out - Helen showed how writing can become a life-long habit. Having completed her first thirteen-chapter novel at the age of twelve, Helen was heartened by positive feedback from family, teachers and even a publisher, so always believed that she would eventually succeed.

Helen’s ten novels have been flying off the Library shelves following her visit and many students were thrilled to be able to purchase their own copies of the books which Helen gladly signed and dedicated to them. Thank you to Book Nook Hove for supplying our pop-up bookshop on the day.

Students who participated in Helen’s creative writing masterclass in the Library produced their own brilliantly imaginative paragraphs reacting to a piece of shocking news. This was based on the experience of Jed, the main character in Helen’s River of Ink series, who learns that he is immortal, having consumed the elixir of life earlier in the twentieth century. The Library book club has been following up Helen’s visit with some activities based on the code crackers of Bletchley Park, the main setting for Helen’s Secret Breakers series, with students producing their own encrypted sentences for friends to unravel.

Helen Dennis was delighted by the ‘...wonderful way the students responded’ during and after her talks and added, ‘I was massively impressed by the writing the students did and the ideas they shared in the workshops and the questions they asked.’

Sussex Schools Swimming CompetitionCongratulations to the Angmering swimmers who competed in last week’s Sussex Schools Competition. It was a tough event that saw most schools in Sussex represented and the standard was incredibly high. Each team competed in a medley and freestyle relay and everyone did both themselves and the School proud. The team with the best result of the day were the intermediate girls who finished top ten in their medley relay. Well done to everyone, especially the year 7s who participated in their first gala for the School.

Netball NewsCongratulations to the Sixth Form Netball team for playing their first league game. This is the first year we have entered this league and we hope to do well with this talented squad. Sadly, our first game didn’t end the way we’d have liked but we learnt a lot from it and we will be taking that into our next game against Steyning! Bring it on!

UIPM World Biathle Championships Sal Hasheesh, Hurghada, Egypt

25-28 October 2018Sixth former, Ethan Fincham took part in the above event, having both qualified back in July of this year to represent Team GB as part of the Pentathlon GB squad.

Ethan was competing to two events, the individual Biathle a run-swim-run over 1200m-200m-1200m and the Biathle mixed team relay, one girl one boy from each team, each completing a Biathle before handing over to their partner. Ethan and his partner won the relay l beating 7 other countries in the final to claim gold.

Ethan then moved onto his individual event bringing home his second gold of the championships, beating a very strong field of 31 athletes from across the world. He fought strong and hard over the first run and swim managing to break away over the 200m sea swim and then maintained great form over the second run to consolidate his lead, crossing the finishing line 13 seconds ahead of second place athlete from Egypt.

This was the third time Ethan had completed at these World Championships finishing with the silver medal on the last two occasions, this time to go one better only goes to show hard work and determination can pay off. His medals are well deserved, and his family and everyone at the school are all very proud of him.

Well done Ethan!

National Junior Games 2018The Wheelpower National Junior games was as big an event as ever this year, 14 students made the Journey to Stoke Mandeville to compete in a range of Paralympic sports. The sports ranged from archery to table tennis and track athletics to shooting. The competition was vast and varied. Success was seen across the sports and age ranges. Some of the highlights: Kieran Jappy, making his debut and smashing the competition to pieces as he romped home with Gold and the title of National Champion in Ploybat. We were strong in the pool and will have secured at least the seasons best times and no doubt some newly crowned champions- we are waiting for the final splits. An athletics highlight was Cody being scouted by the England squad for her track skills, we look forward to seeing how that develops for her. As always our dominance was on the boccia court, in the ramp competition there was only one team going to win it was merely a choice of which player. It was a strong competition and all of our players pushed with Sam eventually taking Gold. In the throwers competition there was more variety with our new year 8s of Kieran and AJ taking 3rd and 4th respectively. Jamie Chappell excelled and proved that dedication to training really does pay off as he took a very well deserved Gold. Well done to the whole squad who represented the school with all the Paralympic values (determination, Courage, equality and Inspiration) and were a real credit to the school. We would like to say a huge thank you to David Hunt for financial support to enable us to take part in this amazing event.

Halloween Cross-Curricular SpectacularTwo STEM subjects joined forces this week for a Halloween cross-curricular spectacular. On Tuesday 30th October a group of year 7, 8 and 9 students carved terrifying designs into pumpkins with the help of Mrs Williams in food technology. As one side of the room created their horrific artwork, the other side used the inside of the pumpkins to make some beautifully smelling cakes.

The row of masterpieces sat in the windows of the technology department for Halloween before being taken to Science on Thursday, where they proved the perfect containers for some colourful chemistry. A huge thank you to Mrs Petrie, Mr Street and Mrs Hofsten who helped with the demonstrations.

We all thoroughly enjoyed working together on this project, best start on designs for next year! Miss Riggs

Future First IGD Employability WorkshopFuture First supports IGD (Institute of Grocery Distribution) to run its Feeding Britain’s Future programme which delivers employability skills workshops to thousands of students across the country. Through this programme, professionals from across the food and grocery industry help to inspire and educate students nationwide, so they understand how to translate their education into skills for work, while learning about the diverse range of careers within the industry.

Year 9 students attended a two hour workshop focused on the transferable skills students can develop from both the compulsory subjects they will be studying at Key Stage 4, and their option choices. Employees from Standard Brands, Barfoots and IGD supported students through a series of activities, described their roles and explained how their own skills and experiences are connected to what they have done at school.

The students made a really positive impression on the employers who commented “the best group they have ever had”.
