Bringing the community closer together!!!

Running for Union Officer on Society and Community Zone

I’m currently in my second year of studying BA Criminology and wish

to do a conversion into Law once I have graduated. I’m an ambitious

young lady who wishes to be part of something big like the student

union council making a change for the better. My goal is to ensure that

that there are no issues within the community. I feel that there should be

more interaction between the University of Leicester students and the

community which I will try my best to make happen.

The policies that I would like to bring forward to the Society and

Community zone are:

- Strengthen the relationships between different levels of education

in order to encourage more young people to choose to go to

university.

- Ensure there are discounts for students on taxi fares.

- Advertise volunteering opportunities more for university

students.

- Building a close relationship between different cultures both

within the university and outside of the university.

o Culture-themed evenings

- Cover the issues of travel on nights out;

specific amount of taxis stationed at every

accommodation and at the front of clubs at

student nights.

- Less parking restrictions for students.

- More publicity on how to collaborate

with the community.

Society and Community

Why society and community?

I am engaged and a part of many different societies around

campus, and am currently Vice-President of Activista. From

supporting and running a campaigning society, I have gained a

lot of experience and social awareness which will help me in this

role. This combined with a growing passion for campaigning

against injustices, ensures that I am a socially consciences person

with a desire to bring about positive change.

I believe your experiences at University are only enhanced by

engaging with the local community here in Leicester and it is

therefore essential that as a Union we encourage and support

this.

Liberation Campaigns

I am a huge supporter for Liberation campaigns, with particular

experience of gender equality and BAME issues. I will strive to

make liberation a priority in this role and aim to encourage the

wider student community to become involved.

My name is Isabelle Habib, I am a 3rd Year

History student who has been actively

involved in the Students Union throughout

my time at University. I would like your

support in running to be on Union Council in

the Society and Community Zone!

Hi my name is George Nobbs and this by-election I’ll be running for education. There’s only one space left and four people competing so it’s really important that you

vote!!

As part of the Union Council I will represent ALL students. I am the only second year running for education, so I am the only candidate that has genuine university

experience and understands the concerns of students, so I am therefore dedicated to ensuring they get heard. As well as this I am both a student ambassador and a

history mentor this year, so I am well equipped and able to put these concerns forward to the Union Council.

Voting opens on Wednesday 27th at 10am and closes on Thursday 28th at 5pm.

If you have any questions don’t hesitate to contact me via email at [email protected].

Six point plan

1. Encourage tutors to scan copies of books – this will solve the problem of lack of library books.

I will ask your tutors to scan the relevant chapter of their book and you will be able to read it

without worrying about availability of library books.

2. Access to your own exam scripts plus great feedback – no one can access their exam papers

to see a breakdown of their marks, this will make sure you can learn from their mistakes in

the future giving you better grades.

3. Cameras in lecture theatres – this way if you miss a lecture you will be able to listen to the

whole lecture on blackboard. You won’t miss a thing.

4. Ensure tutors keep to essay hand-back deadlines – I will put pressure on departments and

tutors to make sure you don’t have to put up with this frustration and stress.

5. Reduced library book prices – we all know books are too expensive so we need to knock the

prices down. We did pay £9,000 for this after all!

6. Greater diversity in education plus representation of BAME and LGBT groups – representation

and proportionality are key. Therefore I will strive for less discrimination in both the

workplace and for students themselves.

Why should you vote for me?

1. Experience – I am the only second year

candidate, so I am the only person to have a

genuine experience of university life. This means

I both know the mechanisms of university and

know the concerns of students.

2. Contacts – I am in a wide range of societies

therefore representing a range of different

groups. I will use this to gather information

about what students want and what they would

like to be improved.

3. Ability to get things done – as stated before I

know people and mechanisms of the university.

I will use this to get your views heard and acted

upon.

YOUR education matters.

Running for Union Council Officer on the Education Zone

I am currently in my second year and studying BSc Psychology. I wish to take a

postgraduate course in forensic psychology after graduating from university. I

am a versatile, hard-working and self-motivated person with ambition and an

excellent work ethic. I aim to excel in everything I attempt to do and nothing less.

I would like to be a Union Council Officer within the Education Zone as I feel that

while the university appears to be dealing well with issues concerning education,

there can always be room for improvement. I hope to ensure that any issues

raised by university students can be dealt with efficiently and effectively,

therefore ensuring that all students are content and happy with their courses and

other aspects of their education and beyond.

The goals that I would like to help achieve in the Education Zone are:

- Ensuring there is a wider availability of both hardback copies of books and e-books in the library.

o Books with holds should be allowed to be borrowed for two weeks. o Short loan books should be allowed to be borrowed for three days

rather than one. o Recalled books should be due from two weeks to the date that they

are recalled. - Arranging weekly sessions to be held between course representatives and

students that may have issues within their course.

- Ensuring that all courses have study skills sessions or discussion groups at least weekly or fortnightly.

- Provide more help with examinations across all courses, e.g. making more past examination papers available.

- Enable more effective communication between course representatives and course staff.

Whether it’s £9,000 tuition fees, cuts and privatisation,

sky-high rents making sub-standard

accommodation unaffordable, or our student

vultures out to make a profit from our education.

Vice-Chancellors are giving themselves a pay rise, while

We need a democratic, fighting, and campaigning NUS that will oppose the austerity onslaught. The cuts can be beaten, but the NUS should organise mass action to win. We need a

national demonstration against all attacks on education to bring together thousands of

students and workers furious about where things are going. NUS should build student

support whenever workers take strike action, particularly education workers striking to defend

our services.

Re-elect Izzy Habib

For NUS Delegate

AIMS: To promote the conference and topics discussed within the

NUS, making it more accessible for all students. I want to have as

much contact with people within the University in order to ensure

that the ideas and campaigns you care about get fairly represented

within NUS; relating back the information emerging from within NUS

ensure our their needs are being met.

EXPERIENCE: Being fortunate enough to have been voted as your

delegate last year, I already have the necessary experience which will

help me to be an excellent student representative for the University

of Leicester Students’ Union. The insight which I gained from last

years conference ensures that I am prepared for how NUS works and

how to influence policies, meaning that I will be a strong voice for

our Students’ Union.

My name is Isabelle Habib and I would like to be

your representative at this year’s National NUS

conference! I am a dedicated and enthusiastic

student who wants to get your ideas and opinions

heard within the NUS. I’ll make sure I represent

the views of you individually and of Leicester

University as a whole.

CAMPAIGNS: I am a passionate campaigner who has supported the

Union in Living Wage and Voter Registration and have taken the lead

on campaigns against Tax evasion. I believe that we and the NUS

should lead the way for campaigns and engage as many students as

possible in supporting them too.

RACHEL FOR NUS DELEGATE

[email protected] | @RHOLL92

My name’s Rachel Holland and I’m running to be one

of four of your NUS National Conference delegates.

From experience, I know how important it is that every Union gets fairly

represented on a national level, and I think that I’m the person to fairly and

accurately represent University of Leicester

Students’ Union this year.

Delegate 2013- Union Council Officer

12/13

WEDNESDAY 27/11-THURSDAY 28/11WWW.LEICESTERUNION.COM/VOTE

AS A DELEGATE, I PLAN TO:

SUPPORT A NATIONAL UNION OF STUDENTS THAT WORKS FOR STUDENTSThe NUS often gets dismissed as little more than the Extra card when it comes to having a direct impact on students’ lives - I want to ensure that the people and policy guiding the NUS this year can make real tangible change for students.

ENSURE THAT LIBERATION STAYS ON THE NATIONAL AGENDA

As the SU Women’s Officer, liberation is at the heart of all my actions - I want to ensure that this remains the case on a national level and push policy that encourages equality

of outcome and fair representation for all members of NUS.

BE AVAILABLE AND ACCOUNTABLE TO LEICESTER STUDENTSI’m running to represent you, not me - I’ll ensure my availability for conversation online and offline before, during and after conference where you can raise questions, concerns and ideas for me to bring to a national agenda.

ENCOURAGE AFFORDABLE LIVING COSTSWith the cost of living raising to almost £10000 per year

for students, we should not be forced to turn to hours-intensive employment or payday lenders just to make

ends meet in order to get a degree. By going to National Conference, I want to ensure that viable financial alternatives are provided by NUS for students at

Leicester and across the country.

Page 21: November Elections Manifesto Booklet

I have attended numerous NUS Conferences and have a good understanding of NUS politics. The NUS is there to stand up for students. I would like to ensure Post Graduate Funding is firmly on NUS’s agenda, building on our campus campaign. For too long Post-Graduate courses have been an impossible dream for many students, purely as they cannot afford it. The NUS should fight to change this.I would also like to see NUS focus their attention on ensuring that the student voice is I would also like to see NUS focus their attention on ensuring that the student voice is heard. By adopting our campus campaign to increase voter registration amongst students, the NUS can help achieve this.

National Union of Students

As an NUS delegate I would be here to represent your views, not mine.As such I will be available before, during and after the Conference. If you have an idea, I will work with you to try and ‘change it’ at NUS, or if you have any questions or queries I will do my best to ‘explain it’.There will be opportunities both online and offline to share your ideas with me and I will welcome students to come forward with new and exciting ideas

Change It or Explain It

REPRESENTING YOUR VIEWSI will hold a forum, both online and off, before annual conference to hear the views of students. I'm a delegate for the University, and will be going to represent your views, not mine.

A MODERATE NUS FOR THE MODERATE MAJORITY Our focus should always be on standing up for students, and doing this through moderate

methods that ensure we have the best chance of delivering success for students.

EXPERIENCE OF NUS CONFERENCESNUS Conference 2014 would be my 7th NUS Conference, and my third NUS national conference. This experience means I'm in the best position to represent you and be effective for Leicester.

NUS AWARENESS CAMPAIGNNUS doesn't always do a fantastic job of communicating why it exists; I'd like to change that by

running a campaign to show you what NUS does, how it works and the impact it has on students.

TAKING LEICESTER CAMPAIGNS NATIONALLYOur Students' Union has run some brilliant campaigns and I think we should take the success we've had with them on campus nationally. We need to focus on the crisis of Postgraduate Funding, Voter Registration and Zero Tolerance, to name just a few!

Hi, my name is Emily Harvey

and I'm a second year

currently studying history and

politics. I would like to run to

become a NUS LGBT

Conference Delegate.

Please do not hesitate to email

me regarding my manifesto at

[email protected].

My Experience

I am a member of Union Council, and this, as well as my other

experience, have given me the confidence to stand up and

voice my opinions, as well as draft proposals; a useful skill for

the NUS Conference.

I also take interest in LGBTQ* welfare and culture, having

attended London, Leicester and Brighton Pride in the last 2

years, and regularly campaigning for a range of NUS issues

including LGBTQ*, women and disability liberation.

I hope to go to this conference as I know that I will find it both

socially and intellectually stimulating, and want the

opportunity to bring back ideas for the society to discuss and

debate.

I attended NUS LGBT Conference last year, and this

helped me gain experience of the NUS movement

and how it is run and works.

I am also Co-Chair of the University of Leicester

LGBTQ Association, helping to organise a number of

events throughout this year so far. I have already

achieved a number of my Manifesto aims I made

when running for Co-Chair, including making the

Facebook Group Secret, and thus increasing privacy,

increasing our online presence, creating closer links

with Trade, and helping run a Coming Out Workshop.

I volunteer regularly with LGBTQ organisations and

charities, including Trade. This means I am

increasingly sensitive about issues that affect

individuals in the LGBT* community.

I have been a Course Rep since joining university and

during this time I have been developing my skills of

impartiality and being able to fairly represent my

subject peers, a useful skill for the Conference. I have

been awarded Best Newcomer for my work at the

Leicester Student of the Year Award.

If I am selected, I want to take your ideas and questions to the conference with me, so if there is anything you would

like to raise, email me. Thank you.

Hi! My name is Ieuan King and I am a first year law student. As part of the Law Society, I have undertaken Client Interviewing and Mooting (Debating). Both of these have helped develop my negotiating and public speaking abilities. It is my belief that these attributes strengthen my candidacy for the NUS LGBT conference where a balanced viewpoint and a need for negotiation are a necessity.

I am also an active member of the LGBTQ* Association and have taken part in both socials and events such as the Hate Crime workshop. This event gave me an insight into the issues facing LGBTQ* people today. My involvement with these events and the society in general has meant that I will pursue a position in the committee next year. Aside from the LGBTQ* society I have also been to the last two Cardiff Mardi Gras and LGBTQ* parades. I found these to be invaluable in order to raise awareness of the LGBTQ* community within Cardiff and South East Wales and also allowed me to express myself fully as an individual. I believe that the NUS LGBT conference will offer me an excellent opportunity to gain first hand knowledge surrounding the issues faced by LGBTQ* people and the policies which need to be enacted in order to ensure that all matters of concerns are dealt with. Furthermore, the ideas and concerned raised by the conference can be brought back and discussed within the Association.

Hello!

I'm Tom Whyke, a first

year biological science

student. I am running to

be YOUR delegate for the

National Union of

Students LGBT conference

2014.

I am the elected campaigns officer for the University of Leicester LGBTQ Association and therefore, I feel

that it is important for me to attend to develop my skills for my role as campaigns officer. I also have the

experience of being the student leader for Social and Pastoral care in my school, as well as being deputy

head boy and a student representative for my college. I am a member of the Society and Community zone

of the Student Council.

Electing me will help me to develop my skills which I will need to be a successful campaigns officer for the

LGBTQA. It will also help me to develop my passion for student politics and activism and teach me how the

NUS works.

I am a very friendly and approachable person. I listen to every single person, view and argument. If I am

elected, I would take every single point of view to the conference and make sure that we as a group are

listened to on a national scale and make sure we have our views listened to so things can be changed.

My passions for equality, freedom of speech and liberation have inspired me to take part in student politics

over the years and I hope to develop these passions by attending the conference.

If you have any questions about me or my manifesto then please feel free to approach me if you see me about, or
