Introduction and commentary The learner work that follows has been assessed accurately to national standards. This is one example of a Merit grade on the core internally assessed unit. The Digital Portfolio developed achieved all of the set criteria. The assignment brief used was the Pearson Authorised Assessment Brief for Unit 3: Design a Portfolio, and was not modified by the centre. For Learning Aim A this learner has achieved the criteria 2A.P1, 2A.P2 and 2A.M1. The learner has described the intended purpose and target audience of the digital portfolio. The design documentation provides a clear timeline for the project, a detailed structure chart with navigation routes and storyboard and an alternative design solution has been provided, which contains details of layout and assets. To achieve 2A.D1, further justification of the design decision is required. The learner would need to justify how each asset and the choice of navigation options enhances the user experience. They would also need to provide justification of how the portfolio fulfils the stated purpose and meets the needs of the target audience. For Learning Aim B this learner has achieved the criteria 2B.P3, 2B.P4, 2B.P5, 2B.M2. 2B.M3 and 2B.M4. The portfolio content and structure is refined and demonstrates an awareness of the purpose and audience. The portfolio has a consistent structure and an introduction has been provided on all pages. The range of assets used demonstrates an awareness of the intended purpose and the target audience of the portfolio. The navigation and commentaries were consistent throughout and evidence of testing to ensure the portfolio was functional and fit for purpose has been provided. To achieve the higher criteria further development of the portfolio is required. There was some evidence provided of basic changes made as a result of user testing but no further refinements have been shown and end-user recommendations should be considered further. Further justification of the choice of content and the navigation routes chosen should be provided. Further improvements are required to make the portfolio easy to navigate and to ensure it looks professional. For Learning Aim C this learner has achieved the criteria 2C.P6 and 2C.M5. The learner has provided a good explanation as to why the portfolio is suitable for the target audience and for the intended purpose. They have considered feedback from end users in their review. To achieve 2C.D3 a further evaluation of the final portfolio against the initial design documentation is required. This should evaluate the extent to which the portfolio meets the needs of the audience and the intended purpose of the portfolio. A rationale for any changes made is also required. Feedback from end reviewers should also be fully incorporated into this review and should help learners make the necessary recommendations for further improvement.

Scenario You want to apply for an IT job when you finish your BTEC course and

you’ve heard that a local company, Konnekted, recruits IT apprentices. As part of your job application, you are going to produce a digital portfolio so that the company can see the work that you can produce. You know that potential employers will want to see a range of your work, such as written documents, images (still and moving), audio tracks, programmes and systems that you have created during your course. The range of work you produce will show how suited to the job you are. You can also include any other relevant activities that you have done, such as other courses or qualifications, activities completed for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, community work you have undertaken and any other achievements, as well as details about yourself. Your digital portfolio needs to impress the people at Konnekted and, if necessary, other employers, as you are sure that there will be other people applying for the apprentice positions. Therefore, it is important that your portfolio shows that you have all the skills required for the role. Your digital portfolio will be hosted on a server and employers like Konnekted will be able to access it through a web browser. It will be made up of a number of linked web pages. All of the content will need to be in a format suitable for displaying on the web. The portfolio will have a main page, which the other pages will link to. You will need to split your portfolio into different sections based on the different content you have created. The portfolio must include work from all your completed units in the course.

Task 1 Produce a detailed design of the portfolio that, with a written justification for your design, you are going to submit for an IT job at a potential employer such as Konnekted. It should include the following information. Who your portfolio is aimed at and what its purpose is. You should

tailor the portfolio to showcase your skills and achievements, and produce an original design to set your application apart from those of the other people who apply.

A project plan or timeline which provides a predicted date for when your portfolio will be finished.

A detailed storyboard of your preferred solution; describing at least eight screens, and showing how you will layout the pages and what content each page will contain. You can include colours, fonts, moods and styles.

A diagram or chart showing how people can navigate through your portfolio.

A list of all the resources (assets) you will use. This includes logos, texts, images, video, audio tracks and other content that your site will contain, with details of where they have come from and where these assets will be used.

Details of an alternative solution. This does not have to be a fully completed design but should outline how the design could be done differently. It could cover text and image description, navigation details and the asset list. You could outline alternative ideas on the preferred solution’s storyboard, but you should clearly identify that the idea is an alternative and explain why you have rejected the idea.

Include a written justification of your design, saying how it will meet its purpose, how each asset will enhance the user experience and how it has been designed to meet the needs of the audience.

Consider what your potential employer will be looking for when viewing your portfolio and bear these in mind when designing your portfolio. The portfolio must include work from all your completed units in the course.

Task 2 Create and Test Your Portfolio With your plans all in place, you can now create and test your portfolio, refining and justifying the content as necessary. You will need to create: 1. a folder structure to hold the different types of content 2. html web pages (to display the assets) 3. commentaries to introduce and explain the assets.

4. Make sure that all the assets are in a format suitable for the web.

You will need to check the file format and also the size of any images, videos and animations. You may need to change any text that has been created using a word processor so that it displays correctly when formatted in HTML.

5. Create the necessary pages for your portfolio using HTML and other assets; for example, text, images, audio and video. Your navigation should be consistent and straight forward.

Now that you have created your portfolio, you need to test it for purpose and functionality. Create a test plan that includes the steps to check that your

portfolio works properly when used in different browsers and by different computer systems. Work through your test plan, recording and correcting any faults that are found.

Get feedback from the users of your portfolio, especially about the suitability of your portfolio for the intended audience. Make changes as necessary.

Refine and justify your choice of content. Provide a detailed commentary that contextualises the content and shows how the assets have been chosen to enhance the user experience.

Learner work

Audience and purpose of the portfolio The purpose of my portfolio is so the employer ( Konnekted) can see what I have

achieved on this course and the skills that I have learned. They are looking for possible IT Apprentice to take on. So the aim of the portfolio to show

my skills. This will show why they should pick me as an IT Apprentice from other people. The other purpose of the portfolio is to showcase my skills so that other employers can see

what I can do and what I have done on the course. The portfolio will show that I can work to

deadlines and about me e.g. hobbies and interests. The audience of my portfolio is the people at Konnekted and other employers.

As they own the company and are looking for IT Apprentices they will be looking for a

professional portfolio so I have added a good colour scheme and photographs of me to

help catch their attention. When I am looking for a job I will be able to show the boss the work that I have done and

what sills I have that might be of use to them. The portfolio will also have to show all of the work that I have done on the course, my

GCSE grades and a copy of my CV so that they can find out about me and what I can do.

Justification of design choice

My portfolio has all of the information that is required to show prospective employers. I

produced

A detailed storyboard to show the layout/text/image and content of the pages.

A alternative design solutions to show another design idea.

A structure diagram showing the navigation.

Details of assets used and where they will be found.

A structure chart should show complete navigation. I am please about the layout as I have included some good features.

The layout and navigation is consistent and the same on every page. This will make the

portfolio easy to use and navigate. The design documents are very good and details so any web designer will be able to

create my digital portfolio. I have used restful colours, light grey background and black text. All of the table and button /

frame borders are white , this will make then stand out and look professional.

Highlights from my feedback from SEB and Lilly

SEB I think the colour scheme it’s good to look at and it’s all blend well together

There’s picture on most of your pages that I like Lilly

There’s not a lot of writing on most of the pages

User Review of my webpage I asked for feedback about my page from 2 class mates.

They said that they liked the web pages.

Seb said that I should check my spelling so I printed off all of the pages and read them

and looked at them online and corrected al of the spelling mistakes. The apprentice company or other employers want to see a webpage that is free from

spelling and grammar errors. Lilly said that I should brighten the page up a bit.

All of my pages have black background, it would be a lot of work to change them all so I

decided to change the text colour to red to make it stand out better. Seb also said that I should change the size of the navigation bar as some of the words did

not fit. I changed all of the navigation bar to make them bigger now all of the words fit.

Audience & purpose

Who is my portfolio aimed at? The purpose of the portfolio

My portfolio is aimed at Konnekted because it is a local company and I am looking to

secure an apprenticeship with them. It will also be useful for other job applications so will

be aimed at those employers as well.

1. My portfolio is very well laid out accurate and now shows all of the work that I have

created on the ICT course .

2. The portfolio shows all of my new webpage design and software skills that I have

learners on the course.

3. It is also a chance to show off my work to anyone who looks at my website. The overall purpose is just to give Konnekted and other people an idea of what I am like

and of what standard I work at. How my portfolio meets the needs of the audience

My audience is the managers at Konnekted and other people who need to know

information about me or my IT BTEC course e.g. employers or teachers.

The purpose is to inform people e.g. Konnekted and other employers of what I am like

before they meet me so they can get a better idea of whether they want to hire me before

an interview. My portfolio shows Konnekted and others information about me including my CV, basic

information about me, my work standard and what I look like. It does this be showing all

of my IT work units in detail on separate pages so it is easy to read. It is laid out simply to

show my skills and setting tasks out and it shows my CV on its own page so that they user

can concentrate on just that. The home page is laid out simply as well as the rest of the

pages it includes a small picture of me, a voice commentary to help the user get to know

me and my portfolio and a little bit of simple information in bullet points. The rest of the

information that I feel like the user needs to know it shown on a separate page titles Extra

Info. My portfolio is easy to navigate as the buttons are simple to understand and you can

go anywhere you need to using them.

Highlights from my feedback from SEB and Lilly was that Seb thought that the colour scheme

was good to look at and it’s all blend well together and that the picture on pages was good.

But he did say that he saw some spelling mistakes so I corrected all of the spelling mistakes.

My portfolio now looks very professional with no spelling and grammar mistakes. This should

tell the possible employer that my spelling and grammar is good or better than normal. The

target audience for this portfolio are businesses who are looking for new IT apprentices and

they would not be interested in someone that could not spell. Lilly through that there was a lot of writing on most of the pages but not a lot that stands out

on the website. I decided to leave the writing the same on every page as it let the employer

know what I had done on the course and Seb said that it was ok. From the feedback I carried most of the changes suggested and it did make the webpage

and portfolio more attractive to employers..

Further improvements If I got a chance to redo this assignment I would re-arrange every page, use a different

colour scheme and put more information into it. I would do this because my website might

be bland because it is grey. I think that the portfolio does everything that it was intended to do.
