Numerous federal and industrial research institutions in the Federal State of North Rhine-Westphalia form an outstanding landscape of innovative science and research.

The NRW Research Schools haveannounced an award for young scien-tists to foster the early developmentof research experience and practice.Every NRW Research School awards an annual prize of 1,500 Eurofor an outstanding research paperin the corresponding field of research.Applicants should be (co-)authors of a paper which can be an outstandingpublication in a high ranking scientificjournal, in proceedings of an interna-tional conference, or other publicationsin the relevant research community.Individual application conditions for each of the NRW Research Schoolsapply, and they are available in ouronline portal www.young-scientist-award.de. Applications for the awardscan be submitted by the students orfaculty advisors to the respective NRWResearch School from which the awardmay be obtained. Along with a copy of the paper or accepted manuscript,the student’s curriculum vitae, and a letter from the research advisor or department dean should be included,confirming the major contribution of the applicant to the paper. young scientists in the interdisciplinary field of drug research.

The educational program of the NRWInternational Graduate Research SchoolBIOTECH-PHARMA provides the necessaryacademic courses as well as the researchtraining required for urgently neededyoung scientists and future leaders in thisfield.

A three-year-PhD-program – especiallydesigned for excellent and highly

motivated students – covers all key aspectsof drug research and biotechnology.

The focus lies on the identification ofdrug targets and lead substances (chemi-

cals, biologicals), development of novelbiological therapies (like protein-, gene-and cell-based therapies as well as nano-technology) and drug regulatory affairs.BIOTECH-PHARMA promotes interdiscipli-nary research and teaching; it is based on a close collaboration of the Faculty ofMedicine, the Faculty of Mathematics andNatural Sciences, CAESAR (Center ofAdvanced European Studies and Research) and the BfArM (Federal Institute for Drugsand Medical Devices).

The Graduate School of Chemistry at

Münster offers a com pre-hensive programme in inorganic and ana-

ly tical chemistry, food chemistry and bio- chemistry, medicinal chemistry, businessmanagement in chemistry, as well as organic and physical chemistry. Scientistsfrom neighbouring disciplines (physics andbiology) also contribute to the researchinfrastructure of the school.

Interdisciplinary collaborations betweenthese fields play a vital part in the

research activities. The school comprises ca. 30 world renowned research groupsconducting vigorous research projectswhich are well funded by numerous federaland industrial research institutions.

The GSC-MS provides a three year doc-toral programme in chemistry, within

the framework of a fertile research environ-ment. This is augmented by an efficientcurriculum which covers practical skills tobolster interdisciplinary expertise, and softskills for a career oriented future.

The International NRWGraduate School of

Dynamic IntelligentSystems offers a stimula-ting and supportive

environment in the rapidly developingfield of software, systems and networkengineering.

The research programme is focussed onchallenging topics in the field of embed-

ded or mechatronic systems. These systemsonly function correctly when the oftencomplex interplay between mechanical,electrical and software components iscarefully defined and works well. The construction of these systems is a researchfocus of the University of Paderborn.

Currently 45 students from 14 countriesare working on their PhD at the NRW

“From embryo to oldage: the cell biology and genetics of health

and disease” (IGS DHD) at the University of Cologne offers a three-year PhD pro-gramme in the field of molecular biology.

Twenty seven research groups of inter-national reputation participate in the

programme. They address a wide range ofbiological questions, using most of today’smicrobial, plant and animal model systemsto investigate cell biological and geneticalmechanisms whose perturbation duringthe life cycle of an organism results indisease.

MOSES offers a stimulating environmentwith collaborative embedding in large

scale national and international researchinitiatives and research opportunities in all aspects of sensors, multi sensor systems,data processing, fusion, mining as well assimulation and optimisation of complexsensor systems. Especially remote sensingtechniques, 2D/3D imaging, global naviga-tions satellite systems, and sensor networksform key issues of the programme.

MOSES constitutes a structured curri-cular doctoral training and research

programme, that qualifies for autonomous scientific work andprofessional activity in research anddevelopment. Participants will bepromoted to the German doctoraldegree Dr.-Ing. or Dr. rer. nat. within a period of three years.

Neuroscience (IGSN) andits research centers ofexcellence offer research
