A Message from Management Many of us have heard the adage “Change is the only constant.” The emergence of the Internet and its capabilities is proof positive. Information technology has had an impact on nearly every area of our lives. So much information is now available at our fingertips that filtering information for reliability and having confidence in the source is a challenge unto itself.

Nu Flow is helping you meet those challenges without sacrificing the con-venience of “at your fingertips” information. It’s our goal to be a reliable source of Inside Infrastructure Rehabilitation information that you can depend on. That’s why we have created, with careful consideration of the content, a new web site that is both reliable and comprehensive in scope.

Nu Flow would like to thank each of our licensees during the rebuilding of our web site’ intranet for their pa-tience while we developed a better network for you to access. Nu Flow hopes that the updated site will be a source of information for all cus-tomers and licensees that are searching for information pertaining to Trenchless, CIPP, Drains and Potable Lining installations. These are just part of what we de-liver every day at Nu Flow online.

Our enhanced site is more engag-ing than ever. For example, it now includes animated images depict-ing the method by which we line drains and potable pipes, as well as voice-over explanations which help licensees, prospective licen-sees and customers understand what Nu Flow provides.

Looking for a recent Newsletter publication? Check out our regu-larly updated Publications page, where you can read many of our print publications online.

It is our intent to provide all of our licensees access to online informa-tion and to support your efforts in selling Nu Flow. Any suggestions to improving our website are wel-comed and encouraged.

With sincere thanks,

Welcome to all of our New Licensees and Franchisees in 2007!

NASTT No Dig in San Diego

The 2007 NASTT No Dig Show was held in sunny San Diego, April 15th to the 20th.

The show was held at the Town and Country Resort and Convention Center, a ten minute car ride from the Nu Flow San Diego corporate store.

Justin Manners, Nu Flow’s newest sales representative was down from the Toronto store to experience the show.

“For me, the show was about meeting our clients face-to-face and sizing up the competition. It was a great experience and I’m looking forward to the upcoming Cleaner show in Louisville.”

International Sales Manager Andrew Felsburg is based out of Nu Flow San Diego and was also on the scene.

“You have got to like a show in your own back yard. We had several opportunities to show current and prospective Licensees through our state of the art 16,000 square foot facility. We had several organiza-tions expressing interest in our potable system and some municipal inquiries about our drain technology. It was a productive show all around.”

The No Dig Expo is an annual showcase for all kinds of trenchless technologies including, CIPP, Pipe Bursting, Pipe Ramming, Di-rectional Drilling, Pipeline Construction, Grouting and the support-ing equipment and services.

Big Contracts Mean Big Confidence…

Coca-Cola Bottling Plant

The Installations Crew of Nu Flow Toronto recently completed drain line rehabilitation at the Coca-Cola Bottling Plant in Toronto, Ontario. The building’s drain system had been modified by the current owners as well as by previous tenants. This meant that existing blue prints were next to useless and a complete investigation of the drain infrastructure had to be conducted.

The Nu Flow Crew started out with a five point plan: 1. Map out the entire drain infrastructure of the

facility; 2. Determine the condition of the pipes in each

system; 3. Determine the configuration of the pipes; 4. Determine any irregularities in the system; 5. Locate problem areas.

The Crew developed a work plan and was given the official go ahead. The resulting work included: 1. 661 feet of pipe were descaled and cleaned; 2. 762 feet of 4”, 5” and 6” pipes were lined; 3. New cleanouts were installed to provide the required access to the lines; 4. Some of the pipes were reconfigured to re-move congestion points from the system.

Fort Drum, 10th Mountain Division

A military aircraft hangar at the Fort Drum 10th Moun-tain Division was the scene of a another first for Nu Flow. A team of potable water specialists lead by Dennis Fort successfully epoxy-coated an AFFF Fire Suppression System with APL’s licensed 702 epoxy.

The system itself was suspended 50 feet above grade overtop of several military helicopters.

Overall, the team lined the Fire Suppres-sion Deluge system and the 100% AFFF Distribution System consisting of 420 open sprinkler heads on six deluge systems. The pipe diameters ranged from one to six inches. More than 5,800 feet of pipe were lined. The project lasted eight weeks with the Nu Flow team receiving support from Mandaree Enterprises and the US Army through-out.

The plan revealed the following issues: 1. Leaking rubber gadgets causing rain water to

seep into the ground; 2.Displaced joints and broken pipe were evi-dent in the clay pipe sections;

3. Grease build up in low volume pipes which caused complete blockages;

4. Calcite build up in the pipes that transport the hot waste water;

5. Wrong pipe configurations were causing inac-cessibility.

On the Job... This month’s featured employee is Melina McCormick, Specialty Installer.

Q. How long have you been with Nu Flow, Melina?

Two and a half years.

Q. What’s your current “job” with Nu Flow? Can you give us a description?

I’m a Drain Line Specialty Installer, but I’ve recently begun working on potable water projects as well. My typical day involves running a fiber optic camera into the lines to assess damages. Then I work with a team to develop a rehabilitation plan. Then we start wetting out liners and getting down to business.

Q. What do you find most challenging?

Because it’s new to me, I find the potable jobs most challenging. The logistics that go into a big potable job can be mind numbing. For example we’ve recently been working on the hospital wing of Plymouth Harbor, a luxury retirement residence near Sarasota, Florida. Figuring out how to shoot the actual sys-tem is difficult enough, but our goal is to have zero interference with the residents’ lives, and this makes the job even more challenging. Constant communication and coordination between our team and the Plymouth Harbor staff, along with sound implementation strategy and excellent timing are key to our success.

Q. What do you find most rewarding about the job?

I really enjoy working on projects that other companies have walked away from due to challenges. It’s a great feeling to know you’re doing work nobody else can do.

Q. What is the most exciting job you’ve ever worked on?

There are two jobs that really stand out in my mind. At Temple Emanuel in Manhattan we were working on a 45 degree angle roof, ten stories above the ground for almost the entire job. Then there was the Eisenhower Executive Office Building in the White House Complex. We were working all night on the roof of the building watching the snipers as they watched us. Security was really tight. Q. What’s the funniest thing that’s ever happened to you on the job?

Once, when we were spraying epoxy in a confined space, we needed a tech to literally climb inside the wall and I was the only one small enough to fit, so in I went. That wasn’t too bad, but then we had to thread the hoses above me and of course they were filled with epoxy, and of course I wore all of it. I had blue epoxy all down one side of my body and caked in my hair. It was a long uncomfortable flight from Texas back to Oshawa afterwards. I looked like some kind of punk rocker. Q. Do you find any challenges being the only woman on the jobsite? Can’t say that I do. Sometimes I have to work a little harder so the guys re-member that I can do the job just as well as they can, but that’s about it. We have had a couple of women hires that found out what the job was really like and decided to move on. I think it takes a certain kind of person, man or woman, to do this kind of work.

When Push comes to Pull...

The Nu Flow Training Grounds

Sinan Omari, Nu Flow Installations Manger, and Pete Coles, Local Instal-lations Manager, are the proud leaders of a team of installers in Durham Re-gion and Greater Toronto Area. Dur-ham Region has long been a training ground for Nu Flow drains installers and licensees alike.

For the last six years, Nu Flow has held a contract with the Region of Dur-ham for the rehabilitation of all residen-tial laterals. The bid is renewed every year but Nu Flow has never faced any real competition.

Sinan recently took the time to sit down with the newsletter staff and share his experiences with the Region.

Q. What are the terms of our deal with the Region? A. The contract Nu Flow holds with the Region of Durham is a service contract meaning we get the jobs as they come up throughout the year. We don’t have a set number of repairs per year.

When Durham staff receive a call from a home owner reporting a sewer problem, an inspector is dis-patched to assess the problem. If lining is required, Nu Flow is issued a purchase order and our crew takes over from there.

Q. So if it’s a service contract does the work load vary wildly? A. Not really. Our average yearly footage of liner installed is 2000 feet. It’s a profitable venture to be sure.

Q. So how many laterals is that per year? A. Average number of jobs done yearly 175. Our team is rarely idle.

Q. What are some of the highlights from your time at Nu Flow? A. We did a historical restoration of a beautiful old church in the heart of Oshawa. St. George’s is a 100+ year old historical landmark across the road from City Hall. They had serious root problems in two later-als leading to the main.

We also worked on 100+ year old house in the historical area of Bomanville. We installed a 130 foot liner, one of our longest to date, but preserved the landscaping and structures.

Q. So who’s on your team?

A. Well, Peter and myself of course. We also currently have Chris Armstrong, Grayden Hunt, Henry Smith and Coady Grant working locally. As you know we train our guys here, then they themselves be-come trainers and start traveling to work with our licensees. Long story short, our team is always grow-ing and on the move.

Q. What sort of feedback have you received for the Region? A. We have become Durham’s “go to guys” for drain issues. They call us for advice even when it’s out-side our regular scope of operation. We’ve also made it a practice to react instantly to any unexpected situations the Durham staff might face. We’ve forged a bond of mutual respect and a solid relationship.

The 2008 Pumper/Cleaner Expo... The world’s biggest annual trade show for envi-ronmental service professionals is being held in Louisville, Kentucky this year. The Road to Louisville... This year’s preparations for the Cleaner Show have taken on a whole new di-mension. The expansive growth of the company has put us in the position of being able to offer new products and showcase them in a larger setting.

This year we’re located at Booth 5081 in Hall B. The booth is four times the size we usually run. You’ll still see our shining steel booth filled with samples, litera-

ture and knowledge-able staff, but flanking the booth will be two different trailer pack-ages avail-able for purchase - one for Potable Water and the other for Drains.

Here’s a sneak peak at one of our new trailers...

Lead in the Drinking Water, A National Epidemic

Etched Copper Pipes are leaching metals into your drinking water.

Pipes are sand blasted to better than new condition.

An epoxy coating is then “shot” through your pipes using pressurized air.

The final result is a thin epoxy coating that provides a perma-nent barrier between the pipes and your water.

The solution...

Featured Licensee…. Acid Waste Management Met Life Client: Tishman Speyer Building: Met Life (60 Stories) Location: Downtown Manhattan

Job Type: Potable Pipe Lining Pipe Type: 6-inch and 8-inch galvanized Length: 400+ft of 6-inch and 200+ft of 8-inch

Site: Centrally located in Downtown Manhat-tan, the Met Life Building is home to many shops and restaurants as well as business of-fices. Prior to discovering the option of pipelin-ing, the management re-piped much of the building’s failing potable water system. They quickly discovered re-piping was not a viable option for the base stories of the building due to the destruction and disruption it would cause as well as the astronomical cost. The Property Managers started looking for alternatives and ultimately connected with Nu Flow.

Problem: Normal corrosion of a galvanized plumbing system resulted in flow depletion and rusting caused deterioration in certain areas resulting in leaks.

Solution: A Nu Flow Specialty Team, led by Matt Marcum, removed the corrosion and lined the system, comprised 400 plus feet of 6-inch and 200 plus feet of 8-inch galvanized pipe with a dual coat of the APL licensed 702 epoxy. The mechanically bonded epoxy reestablished full flow and eliminated the threat of future corrosion, rehabili-tating and restoring the piping systems. Nu Flow was able to complete this process over two weekends while shops and restaurants remained open for business, undisturbed.

Acid Waste Management is a Nu Flow drain licensee. The company has collaborated with Nu Flow on several projects over the last four years, most notable St. Bart’s Cathedral in Manhattan New York.

The Met Life project was a great opportunity for the Acid Waste Management team to ex-perience potable water rehab in action.
