Design Development: STV studied a full range of solutions.

Considerations included:

• Safety of the public and contractors

• Traffic would need to be maintained on either side of the roadway.

Any replacement alternatives would requires two stages, under each

side of the highway.

• Constructability

• Disturbance of the pipes, causing a collapse

• Hydraulics

• Duration of construction. The pipes were now a separate rush

project.

• Cost. The full range of solutions came with a range of costs with a

few million dollars spread.

Some of the alternatives included:

• Replace with new CMP’s

• Replace with a box culvert

• Replace with a precast arch

• Replace with a bridge including an option to remove

embankment to the top of the pipes and constructing the

bridge over the pipes. The pipes would be removed after

the first half of the bridge was constructed.

• Steel liner

• Aluminum liner

The Solution: STV realized the benefits and

recommended the aluminum tunnel liner pipe

lining alternative.
