CONGRATULATIONS to Pam Johnson’s Labrador Retriever Pilot! Orion’s Ready for Takeoff TD TDU! Pilot earned his TDU title on Sunday May 17 2015 at the Fort Wayne Obedience Training Club’s combined TD TDU test. He was determined and focused on a 475 yard (415 veg; 60 non veg) 3 turn track. In my head were the words of Ed Presnall “Stand Still and he will show you where it goes”....And so he did! I did my part of the job and my dog did the rest.

Started on a grassy strip along a road adjacent to parking lots. Went along the grassy strip crossing a road and I think 3 driveways - may have been two driveways. Pilot stopped briefly and indicated the right turn. He made a right turn on grass to a leather article which he indicated nicely with a down. Good Boy Pilot! The track went along the grass between the buildings and up to the top of a berm. Pilot motored up the berm and said “it goes left Mom”...I followed. He tracked along the berm behind the buildings. A slight down hill to a road in front of us. Pilot indicated the right turn. I stood still. Gave him some line. He went down to the road and said it does not go across. He looked left and said it does not go left. He took a pee on an electric box and on his way back to me I pulled out my start article. “are we lost Pilot?” NOPE...his head went down, and he pulled me right along the grassy strip beside the road! Up to the final article.

sunshineOn June 5th, Kate Barton tearfully said goodbye to her good friend of 11 1/2 years – her Flat-Coated Retriever “Story”, CH UCH UCD SHR Fireside Turn the Page, CDX, RN, JH, WCX. Her titles simply show her willingness to play my game, where she never failed to render a verbal opinion of her own! The house is so quiet without her. I miss her more every day.

In loving memory, CH UCH UCD SHR Fireside Turn the Page,

CDX, RN, JH, WCX

Our TD TDU test on May 17 2015 came off without a hitch! Wow! Along with a 70% pass rate - 4 new TDU titles, two of which belong to club members. And 3 new TD titles. Had exhibitors from Indianapolis, Illinois, Maryland, Tennessee, and Ohio. Amazing to have both tests fill with 2 alternates for each test.

Huge thanks to our Test Secretary and Chair, Kelly Urick - her first time and a great job; Our head tracklayer Marlene Hill; Also Marlene did double duty by taking over many of my duties as I was in the test and could not be there. Great job Marlene and no easy task at that. Our tracklayers Rick Reiff, Kate Barton, Vanessa Scott, Mark Johnson, Kelly Urick, Marlene Hill. Several who laid two or more tracks. A labor of love for sure. Out on Saturday to

One of my dogs favorite things is to have a Kong each morning as I leave for work, stuffed with a couple of tiny biscuits and a couple of tablespoons of cream cheese! Try it sometime for your dog – keeps them busy and gives them a treat at the same time. (If you have several dogs, Sam’s Club & Gordon’s Food Service sells Cream Cheese by the 3# box!)

plot - some all day - and up bright and early to get the tracks in for the exhibitors. Kudos to our Hospitality crew with Robin Katen in charge along with Cathy Martin who provides coffee with a big smile, Steve Archacki who keeps everyone hydrated and Belva Dreer who was Robin’s sidekick helping out where needed. Pete Johnson was the judges driver on Sunday giving them plenty of room in his F350 Diesel truck. Cheryl Ertelt does her amazing job of photographing every track and doing award photos at the end of the day, along with running her dog Cosby in the test. Our gallery persons were Deb Maheu for the first track and Alison Studer taking over for the rest of the day.

Our judges, Marilyn Johnson and Mike Roehrs plotted some lovely TDU and TD tracks. They spent all day Saturday (along with some time on Friday night) navigating around unknown territory at our sites to figure out the best way to utilize them. Great job! They set a friendly and relaxing tone for the duration of the test. Giving exhibitors plenty of time to handle their dogs through the tracks. Love to have them both back in the future. They were also able to get in an alternate track for each test making our total number of exhibitors 10.

Thanks to Bill Johnston for coming out and giving me the pep talk and moral support along with watching Pilot run his track. And as always Barb Croy is there to help out where needed and always giving 100% back to the tracking program.

I feel blessed to have so many folks loyal to the Tracking Program at FWOTC and willing to come out and give of their time to make our tests a success. Thank you all for all your hard work and dedication to tracking. It is my passion as you all know.

tdu testFWOTC is offering a TDU (Tracking Dog Urban) test on Sunday September 27 2015. We need volunteers to help with the test. If you can give us any part of the day on Saturday and/or Sunday we will find a job for you. If you want to be a tracklayer we will need you for part of the day on Saturday for plotting and on Sunday to lay track. We can train new folks. Our judges are Mike Roehrs and Cindy Beard. Please contact Pam Johnson at [email protected] if you can come out and help. Worker coupons, which can be used for future FWOTC tracking test, will be given to those who come out and help.

I want to thank Nancy, Steve, Elki, and Chris for training the last session, and also a big thank you to everyone who helped with the Tuesday night classes over the last few years. It has been a pleasure serving as the NonMember DOT. I hope someone will step up and take on this responsibility as it is what keeps the club running. Thanks. Lynn Swager

We would like to thank everyone that participated in the inaugural “Introduction to Barn Hunt” Classes in April and May. We were able to demonstrate and explain the rules for the new sport of Barn Hunt. Handlers were able to join in and have fun with their dogs as they learned how to find the rats. The sport is rapidly growing and new BH Trials are now occurring very near to NE Indiana.Since participating in the Intro Classes, there have been several successful teams who have competed in Barn Hunt Trials. Robin and Splash were the first, and obtained 2 Qs and were awarded 2 First Place Ribbons at their very first 2 Trials! We have tried to continue the training by setting up a ring filled with 40 bales of straw in Dawn Taylor’s back yard. However, Mother Nature has limited the availability of practicing outdoors under the trees. We hope to continue our training when the weather allows it and, if there is additional interest we may hold Introduction Classes again in the FWOTC building. Please let Dawn or Nancy know if you would like to see what all the excitement is about!Dawn’s email is [email protected]’s email is [email protected]
