(Being) Catholic Matters David Lins, Director of Faith Formation

This weekend, we hear Jesus say, “Give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and give to the Lord what belongs to the Lord.” So, pay your taxes, stop pretending the 101 is the autobahn, and be informed when you vote. But give your entire life to God. “But what about the separation of Church and state?!” (I can hear some of you screaming it.) I’ve read the Bible. You probably have, too. I currently cannot remember where Jesus said anything about the separation of Church and state. And, no… “Give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and give to the Lord what belongs to the Lord,” doesn’t qualify. Give to the Lord what is the Lord’s. YOU are the Lord’s. Everything you do is the Lord’s. Every single day. What you do between midnight and… midnight… is the Lord’s. So I don’t have to pay taxes? My speed is only limited by my ability to find an open lane? And I can vote for whoever I’d rather have over for Thanksgiving? No. Nope. And of course not. We follow the law when it doesn’t conflict with our Faith. We don’t only follow our Faith when it doesn’t conflict with the law. (At least, I hope not.) Let’s put it another way to help clarify. We are called to be Catholics who happen to be American. (I am not saying being an American is unimportant. It just should never be AS important.) What it comes down to is this: we should never identify (or act) as Americans who happen to be Catholic. Or do you think we were made to prioritize our Faith and our government equally? Again… I hope not.

    OUR LADY OF JOY!

    Sanctuary and Adoration Chapel

    Candle Sponsorships

All Catholic Churches have Our Blessed Lord in repose at all times in the Tabernacle on the Altar and in their Adoration Chapel (if they have one). Next to the Tabernacle is a candle that must be perpetually lit to indicate the presence of Our Lord.

We are now offering our parishioners the opportunity to sponsor either a Sanctuary Candle or an Adoration Chapel Candle in memory of a loved one. Both of these memorials will be available every 7 days beginning October 4, 2020.

We will publish these memorials in our bulletin each week and the sponsor will be provided with a card that they can give to the family of the person they are remembering. You may sponsor a candle for a $20 donation by contacting the office at 480-488-2229.

We continue to offer Mass Intentions as well. These may also be arranged by contacting the office. Mass Intentions are currently booked up to March 2021 but future dates are available.

For the week of October 18 to October 24, 2020

The Tabernacle Sanctuary Candle has been sponsored in memory of Wil Dubes

at the request of Mike & Glenda Dubes

The Adoration Chapel Sanctuary Candle has been sponsored in memory of Dr. Thomas Melillo

at the request of Judie Melillo

May the souls of the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen.

ST VINCENT DE PAUL CLOTHING/ HOUSEHOLD GOODS DRIVE FOR

    THOSE IN NEED

Do you have a sweatshirt, long sleeve shirt or jeans that you no longer wear? How about socks or shoes in good condition? If the answer is yes, then you can make those in need happy with your donations. St. Vincent de Paul will be collecting WINTER clothing on Saturday November 7th and Sunday November 8th before/after all the Masses. Coats, jackets, and blankets would also be appreciated.

Additionally, St. Vincent de Paul will be accepting household goods (furniture, electronics in working order only, no old TVs) on Saturday November 7th between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Sanctity Knows No Age! Do you know who this 15 year old boy is?

It is Blessed Carlo Acutis, beatified by Pope Fran-cis on October 10th 2020!

Image from the Life of Blessed Carlo Acutis (ANSA

Carlo Acutis died at the age of 15. He was into gaming, eating sweets and being a normal teenager. He had an exceptional devotion to the Eucharist and his faith. He even spread that devotion among his family members, encouraging his non-religious mother to attend Church with him and leading her into a conversion. What an incredible example of not only faith, but the impact we can have on our families, even as a teenager! If you as a teenager ever feel like you can’t be holy, or lead others in holiness, you’re wrong. You can do anything with God! Source: https://www.vaticannews.va/en/pope/news/2020-10/pope-

LIVING AS A MISSIONARY DISCIPLE By Sister Mary Eileen

    Malice or Weakness?

The Church makes a classic distinction between “sins of weakness” and “sins of malice”. Even though either could also be mortal, understanding this classic distinction can help us on our spiritual journey.

“Sins of weakness” are those committed primarily through human weakness or frailty. They are the ones where our passions get the best of us and we fall. A lustful moment, a fit of anger or impatience, a giving in to laziness, a gluttonous indulgence are all examples of “sins of weakness”. For those who pray, sins of weakness are often repented of. We should never allow discouragement to take over after sins of weakness. The Lord “knows our frame; He remembers that we are dust” (Ps 103:14).

“Sins of malice” are the ones that are much more difficult to repent of. Sometimes the human person is intent on an evil path, with deliberate choice, and without a need for the passions to pull them into the bad action. Today’s Gospel provides an evident example in the Pharisees. They “plotted how they might entrap Jesus in speech”. Notice the word, “plotted”. This is not something they slipped into in a moment of fear or anger. No, they deliberately plotted. They were conniving and malicious; even Jesus said it: “Knowing their malice, Jesus said, ‘Why are you testing me, you hypocrites?’” Sins of malice are more dangerous to the soul because those guilty are less likely to repent.

Besides the obvious necessity to avoid being malicious, there is something else we can learn from this distinction. Christians should not be naïve about human nature. We are called to be both “innocent as doves” and “clever as serpents” (Mt 10:16). The “clever as serpents” part applies especially when we discern we are dealing with malicious intent. We need to be wise in responding to people and situations for the best outcome. Wasn’t Jesus clever in today’s Gospel? He gave an answer that silenced the malicious. We can go and do the same.
