Blood-typing to be discontinued December 1, 2008As of December 1st, 2008 our lab will no longer ac-cept blood typing. This means the Registry will no longer be able to accept blood-typing as parentage verification. Any outstanding kits or foals that require blood typing for registration must have their kits to the lab no later than the December 1st deadline. We advise not waiting until the last minute as you may be required to re-ship blood should it not reach the lab in a viable state. If you have any questions, please contact the Registry.

Membership & Registrations2008 CAHR Memberships will expire on December 31st. Don’t forget to renew early to ensure your subscription to the Canadian Arabian News is uninterrupted!

Also, a reminder that spring foals are starting to reach six months of age – as foal registration costs go up after six months of age, be sure to fax or mail your registrations to avoid the higher cost.

10 Canadian Arabian Horse News

In regards to the Jean Berg article on Raff les (Canadian Arabian News, Aug 2008, p. 50), her opening sentence seems to me to be misleading. Lady Anne Blunt would not, not purchase a breed-ing stallion because of his color. She did have the knowledge that certain international purchasers, ie. governments, would not buy greys. She did admire and desire certain horses that were in fact grey. Her knowledge of Polish Arabian horse ancestry would have been the reason why she would not have pur-chased Skowronek (Lady Anne Blunt: Journals and Correspondence 1878-1917, pp 188, 194, 19, 335, 339, 46, 402, 403, 482, and 483).

Having read this book more than once, I can assure you that authentic blood was Lady Blunt’s number one concern. I hope everyone can find the time to read this important, historically accurate and insightful book. Sincerely, Scot Gannon

Autor Jean Berg replies: In reply to Scot Gannon, thank you – sometimes one needs a sharp rap on the knuckles in order to do the right thing. I had looked at that first sentence in “Forever *Raffles” more than once with regret. You’re correct, Lady Anne Blunt wouldn’t have let color deter her from purchasing a grey horse if its form pleased her. Perhaps the following will explain why I inadvertently chose that wording. In Lady Anne Blunt: Journals & Correspondence 1878-1917, in regards to two of the Blunts’ earliest acquisitions, it is said Sherifa (in 188) had no fault but that of her colour, and spoke of Khefifa (in 1881) as being so handsome that the ugly color didn’t matter. The exceptional stallions Azrek (sold to South Africa) and Shahwan (to USA) were always mentioned in glowing terms: the latter, accord-ing to Lady Anne, wouldn’t have been sold were he not grey even though they’d never see his like again (The Crabbet Arabian Stud: Its History and Influence, p. 0). This does prove your point; there are many good references concerning grey horses including those on the pages that you’ve listed.

I really enjoyed re-reading the above books and hope that this will in some way satisfy readers as to why that sentence was so written. The negativ-ity toward the colour grey, at the time of writing, had remained foremost in my mind. Personally, I have the utmost admiration for Lady Anne Blunt and have often thought that a movie of her ad-venturous life would make fantastic viewing. Yours truly, Jean E. Berg

Letter to the EditorCAHR 50th Anniversary Issue Errata & Additions...Following is a summary of the errors and omissions contained in the CAHR 50th Anniversary article (Canadian Arabian News, August 2008). These errors have been corrected in the online PDF version of that issue.

Rumors of Bud’s Passing Were Greatly ExaggeratedWe are pleased to report that Mr. Bud Oddy is indeed alive and well. Pure editorial error had resulted in the supreme unfortune of a premature notice of his passing in the piece on Oddy’s Skyline Arabians, p. 66. Our deepest regrets and apologies are extended to Bud, Janet, and family. We are very happy to correct the mistake and note that the Oddy’s breeding program is still going strong after 52 years.

Canadian-Owned National Champion StallionOn p. 1, in regards to Gai-Champion, we inadvertently omitted his most impor-tant wins: that of Canadian National Champion Stallion in 195, and US National Top Ten in 19.

Horses in the North; Canadian Nationals HistoryBoth of the entries for 1980 on page 4 contained errors. Re: the Editor’s Note about Arabians in Canada’s far North, Jean Berg has thankfully corrected my assumption that Dawn Porter took her Arabians with her when she moved. Jean writes, “To the best of my knowledge her horses were left at Spruce Lake, SK under the care of her father until she returned.”

The second 1980 paragraph contains a factual error as well; the first Half-Arabian National halter classes began in Edmonton, AB in 191. We had found a previous reference to the 1980 show as being “the first complete Canadian Nationals,” and had mistakenly interpreted the statement. In truth, the 1980 National show was the first time the show consisted entirely of National classes. Previously, it had been held alongside Class “A” shows put on by members of the Calgary, Edmonton, and Vancouver Arabian horse clubs.

The Other Grey MareRoxanne Rogers wrote in to say, “The write up on Dad and the Williamsons (p. 68) was fabu-lous. Unfortunately I gave you some incorrect info which Dad pointed out to me. The mare the little indian is riding was Bindaffa (Indraff x *Bint Rajwa), not Bint Kontessa (also by Indraff; both mares were foaled in 1955). It surprised me that Dad’s memory is still so good about certain things!”

A Few More Faces You May RememberThough we searched high and low, we hadn’t managed to find pictures of the missing Canadian Arabian News editors before going to print. Here they are courtesy of Jean Berg. Shari Christie was editor from 1992-93; Peggy Arthurs from 1993 to ‘99. Shari Christie was also a Registrar in the CAHR office for several years.

The official “grande” opening of Pomeroy Arabians International in Grande Prairie, Alberta, owned by Bob Pomeroy and Carrie Langsroth, was held on August 30th. Under construction for just over a year, the facility debuted to a large audience of 500-600 people from across North America.

Clinics and demonstrations were held throughout the day by noted trainers Greg Gallun from California and Liz Bentley from Missouri. A private treaty sale was held throughout the weekend’s events and many horses were sold to both seasoned and new Arabian owners alike.

The highlight of the event was Bob and Carrie’s focus on raising funds for the Peace Area Riding for the Disabled Society (PARDS). PARDS is a non-profit community organization which provides a unique service to children and adults with complex needs. PARDS’ mission statement is “To enhance the lives of individuals through equine assisted therapy”.

The event culminated with a barbeque steak dinner and both a silent and live auction with all proceeds to PARDS. In total, $103,424.00 was raised for the Society. Jennifer Douglas, the executive director for PARDS, said “It is difficult to put into words exactly how appreciative we are to Bob and Carrie for including us in their open house. All we can say is ‘thank you’.” A large portion of the funds raised will go towards building a new PARDS riding facility near Grande Prairie.

Congratulations to Bob and Carrie and their staff for putting on such a memorable event. Please read more about Pomeroy Arabians’ Open House in the Jan 2009 issue of the Canadian Arabian News.

16 Canadian Arabian Horse News

The Regina Exhibition Park once again played host to the Canadian National Championships, August 18th to 23rd, 2008. As expected, numbers were down this year – somewhere in the mid-800 entry range, but classes were still packed with top quality horses and loads of excitement. The weather was relentlessly and unapolo-getically hot as the week began. By Wednesday, the water trucks spraying down the pavement near the stables would simply stop and hold steady as passers by ducked under the spray for a little re-lief. Thursday night and Friday brought a bit of crispness to the air, surely giving some added spark to at least a few of our four-legged exhibitor’s performances. Saturday was the final day of the 51st year of the show and fittingly the weather was absolutely perfect.

A Major Win for Pomeroy ArabiansThe shining moments at any National Show often occur in the Halter division and the results from the Royal Red couldn’t have been more thrilling for many of our Canadian entries. Breaking what has been a 30-plus year drought, a Canadian-owned stallion brought home the Championship roses. Pomeroy Arabians’ entry, Major Jamaal (Soho Carol x Maya El Jamaal) with Greg Gallun at the lead, bested a field that included Shaddofax, LD Pistal and FM Echota for the coveted title. Owners Bob Pomeroy and Carrie Langstroth, who call Grande Prairie, Alberta home, celebrated in style on Saturday night after this fantastic win.

Crowd favourite Bey Ambition (Regal Actor JP x Bey Shahs Lady), owned by Murray & Shirley Popplewell of Saskatoon, SK turned on the charisma Tuesday night in a large and particularly top-notch 2-year-old Colt class. The charismatic youngster showed his heart out for handler Claudinei Machado and took the Reserve Championship, earning a boisterous standing ovation from the crowd on his victory pass. Other Canadian colts earning a Top Ten were Aria Egzalt (Gazal Al Shaqab x Egzonera), owned by Pomeroy Arabians and Churchill VM (Enzo x SF Portfolioo) owned and bred by Saskatchewan native, Vivian Murphy. Winning the class was WR Onassis (Odyssey SC x Lillian) and David Boggs for Alberto Cediel of Florida. The Open Mares class saw the crown go to the very typey Scheherazade PE (Armani FC x Autumn Tapestry), owned by the Weber Corp. of Wellington OH and shown by Andy Sellman. In the Futurity Fillies, Carrie Langstroth’s filly En Vogue FA (Enzo x Psyren FA) earned the Reserve Championship garland with Joao Rodriques, while Carrie herself handled En Vogue to a Top Ten in the AOTH Mare class.

The Half-Arabian Futurity Geldings class was handily won by the very handsome Bentley WA (Couturier x Reedann’s Windsong asha), owned and bred by Ed and Laura Friesen of Saskatoon, SK and presented by Terry Holmes. The HA Gelding AOTH saw Reserve Championship honours go to Kohlminer+++/ (x RA Hot Every Nite asha) with Brad Mellafont for Janel Copley of Dunmore,

Country, English Pleasure & ParkAlways a big draw, the English Pleasure horses didn’t disappoint. The extremely talented Hucks Connection V (Hucks Premiere V x Crystal Lace) was unanimous with Vicki Humphrey in the Purebred English Open while Joel Kiesner got the nod from all three judges on purebred Junior English Horse Sin City (Baske Afire x Las Veghaz). Tish Kondas dominated in the half-Arab classes, taking the unanimous win in Park with Heir Strike+/ (x Supreme Heir asha) and edging out Vicki Humphrey aboard Revelation JF+// (x Defiancce) for the win in a very entertain-ing Half-Arabian English Open aboard Cool Night+// (x Night of Roses NshR). Matoi son Toi Slamtastic CRF with rider Kevin

Price thrilled the crowds and trotted off with the Championship in the Half-Arabian English Junior Horse class.

Diane Comeau of Sherwood Park AB and her purebred mare Doubley Blessed+// (AA Apollo Bey x Frasca) went Reserve Champion in the Country Pleasure AATR 18-39 and earned a Top Ten in the AAOTR. Diane also earned Top Tens with LBC Robert E Lee+/ (x Bentlee) in the HA English AO 18-39 and with MFC Allegro (x CH Sultan’s Matchmaker asha) in the Country Pleasure AO and AT 18-39. Western Pleasure, Reining & Working WesternWestern Pleasure was as difficult as ever and winning the Arabian Western Open was the Varian-bred Melody V+/ (Sundance Kid V x Magdalena V) and Rick Gault. Rick also rode Anthem V+ (Jullyen El Jamaal x Alyce Bey V) to the Championship in the Arabian Western Junior Horse division. Liz Bentley piloted Journey X (Odyssey SC x Marissa Bey), another of Pomeroy Arabians’ entries to a Top Ten in that same class. Crossfield, AB’s Renee Shaw-Gillespie saw her entry Khalista PGA (Khadraj NA x HJ Allelujah Bey) earn the title of unanimous Champion in the Arabian Western JT 13 & Under with Colby Powell. The mare also earned a Top Ten in the Western AO 18-39 with Renee in the saddle.

Wendy Obst of Drayton Valley, AB turned on the charm and brought home two back-to-back Reserve Championships in the competitive Half-Arabian Western AAOTR and AATR 40 & Over on her chestnut gelding, Guess What+/ (x Whoa Zan What aqha). Junior rider Faith Seward aboard the very pretty RBR Music Box Dancer (PR Alahbama+/ x Kamivsit),owned by her grandparents,

Ed & Pat Galloway of Ft. Saskatchewan, AB, jogged away with the Reserve Championship in the HA Western Sidesaddle Open.

In the working western divisions, Reining is often at the top of the highlight reel for many spectators. Winning the Open Purebred Championship was the appropriately named Flash MA+/ (Pepi Pasb x Franaliera). LaRae Fletcher-Powell piloted the gelding to the top score for owner David Theilman of Spokane, WA. Top Tens in that class from north of the border went to Justice Shines (Shine on Mahogany x Lasa Cheers) with Kim Smith for Connie Hunter (AB), The Midnite Mist (The Desert Chief x Midnite Charm) and Sharon McLean for Carol Cross (SK), and Joelle Stasiewich (AB) and her sparky mare Neeranna (SH Magnate x Spring Break). Earlier in the week, Joelle and “Annie” rode their way to a Reserve Championship in a ride-off in the Reining AOTR 18-39. The Half-Arabian Open Championship went to Crystal McNutt and CA Just Plain Fancy (x D A Napitov+/) for Story Book Stables, AZ. Hot on their heels were sisters Rena and Sharon McLean from Shaunavon SK aboard Raffs Swiss Mocha (x R-Neptune) and Kashas Zanzybar Black (x Pocos Prince aqha) (respectively), and Jill McKinney’s entry, BSF Gunsmoke+ (x Were Dunn aqha), all of whom earned Top Ten.

Jill McKinney, of Edmonton, AB brought three entries this year and took home a number of titles, most at the hands of daughter Leah McKinney Lawrence. Paired with Dos A Tango (ES Dos Equis x KS Milagra), Leah spun her way to the roses in the Arabian

Winning the HA Reining AOTR was Velda Peach and Freckles Got Trix (Sonitas San Freckles aqha), from Moose Jaw SK. Arabian Working Cow Horse extraor-dinaire Kazbutan (Eldans Wotan x Keko Ruza) and owner/rider Jodi Halpin added to last year’s title with a Reserve Championship in the AOTR.Additional Top Tens in Western Divisions HA Western AATR 40 & Over: PA Canadian Sunrise with Pat Portas. Arabian Working Cow Horse: KC Crescent Moon with Gord Hester for Kevin & Nadine Cusack (AB).

Canadians Strong in the Hunter DivisionHunter Pleasure is consistently one of the largest and often deepest divisions out there. Undoubtedly, Laura Wolsey of Langley, BC and her junior horse O Lordy (The Firelord+/ x Hi Passion) were the talk of the show when the pair neatly trotted out with the Championship in the Hunter Pleasure Junior Horse Class against some tough competition. They added to their fantastic run with

back-to-back Championships in the Hunter AO and AT 18-39 and finished off with a Top Ten in the Open. Ashleigh Clark (BC) and GSF Makin A Fortune+++// (Triften+/ x Princess Becki) topped their show with back-to-back Championships in the Arabian Hunter JOTR & JTR 14-17. Trainer Jada Reed added to the gelding’s titles with Top Tens in Arabian Hunter Open, Sport Horse Show Hack and Arabian English Side Saddle.

The Arabian Hunter JTR 13 & Under class had one of the most crowded rings of the show and coming out on top was KV Once And Again++++// (Eternety x OK Once In A Blue Moon) with Isobelle Ehret for owners Gordon and Louisa Breitkreuz (AB). Todd Ehret also took the gelding to a Championship in Training Level Dressage and went Top Ten in First Level Dressage and Sport Horse Under Saddle.

In the Half-Arabian Hunter division, Canadians left few of the top spots unclaimed. Open Hunter went to Ashley Toye’s (BC) Chance To Jam+// (CWP Chances Are x She Be Jammin) with Cheryl Fletcher. Ashley then rode the gelding to the roses in both the HA Hunter AOTR and AATR 18-39. Gloria Bain (BC) and her mare So Blue++/ (Soldat x Anais Anais) are a relatively new pair, but that didn’t stop them from riding out with the Championship in the HA Hunter AATR 40 & Over and a Top Ten in the AAOTR 40 & Over. The mare also went Reserve Champion in the HA Hunter Junior Horse with Jada Reed. Gloria took home

In the HA Hunter JO and JT 13 & Under classes it was Isobelle Ehret and her family’s well-decorated mare So Double Your Bet+// (Soldat x Margarita Monday) who claimed top honours. Andrea Ehret brought home a Top Ten in the HA Hunter AAOTR 40 & Over, as did Todd Ehret in the HA Hunter Open. Canadians had their usual trio of strong competitors in the over fences classes. Championships went to Dal-Apollo+/ (Sea Ben Ben Bilal x Rudaynah) and Allan Ehrlick of Campbellville ON in the Arabian Working Hunter Open, AT and AO, with a Reserve in the Arabian Hunter Hack. Allan and R Jay Bakaro (x Emkay Bakaro) added to their list of titles with a Championship in the HA Jumper Open, and Reserve in HA Jumper AT and HA Working Hunter AO & AT. Masterfeeds Breeders’ CupThis is the inaugural year for the awarding of the first Masterfeeds Breeders Cup, entitling a trophy and a $1000 cash prize. The win ended up as a tie between two very estabished breed-ers, Ed & Laura Friesen and Sylvia Lenzner, who tied for the 2008 honors.

To enter the Breeders’ Cup, breeders may nominate as many horses as they like, but only points from their top three horses, accumulated at the show, count towards their total. Masterfeeds has committed to sponsor the Breeders’ Cup for the next five years.
