VOLUNTEER & UPCOMING EVENTS continued

The 23rd annual Lithia/Raider Club Golf Shootout set another record this week by bringing in over $253,000 to the student-athletes of Southern Oregon University. This year’s tournament beat last year’s record of $223,000 and over the last four years has brought in almost $827,000 for scholarships and SOU Athletics.

This year a record 13 national companies came through to serve as Major Tourna-ment Sponsors. Those companies included Lithia Auto Stores, US Bank, Cars.com, The Warranty Group, Enterprise, TD Auto Finance, ADP, Dealer.com, Autotrader.com, Chase, TrueCar, Exxon/Mobil 1, and Eleads. Each company paid $10,000 to sponsor the event, Sid recognized each of these sponsors during the auction dinner with a special hat as a token of apprecia-tion.

Held at Medford’s Rogue Valley Country Club, the event featured dinner and team auction Monday night, followed by two sold out flights of golf Tuesday. The tour-nament featured 54 brave teams of 5 that stood up the challenge of 18 holes of heart stopping golf action. Bleary eyed upon ar-rival at 6:15 in the morning, the first flight

set out for glory at 7:00 am under a cloudy sky. Some golfers took the initiative to play and look like real golf pros, LAD’s very own Mark Conner set the bar high with his fashion forward team. After around 15 holes of eagles, birdies and multiple chal-lenges, the sky opened up and released a torrential downpour making short work of soaking the players to the bones. After the thunder and lightning made an appear-ance, the morning round was called and the players reconvened at the clubhouse for lunch and to dry out. As the players for the afternoon flight showed up they were wary as they watch the sopping wet morning players ring out their clothes as they came off the course. Luckily for them, the rain let up to a light drizzle and allowed them to enjoy the entire 18 holes. With all the challenges, we had several winners throughout the day. As always, everyone had a great time getting to know our busi-ness partners better all for a great cause. As one of the golfers myself, I can honestly say I am already looking forward to next year’s tournament! Next year’s golf tournament is set for Sept. 15-16 at the Rogue Valley Country Club.

Print me!

DEAR JOSEPHINEDEAR JOSEPHINE,What type of person would deliberately disregard their colleagues and NOT refill the office coffee pots? We have two coffee pots (pot A and pot B) working a consis-tent rotation. Say, pot A has pretty much NO coffee left in it and pot B has roughly 1 cup left in it. A person takes a cup from pot B, which now leaves less than 1 cup in both pots. At this point a considerate person would combine both pots in to one pot while making a new batch for the other pot. It takes approximately 2 minutes

AT MOST to begin a new pot of coffee!! BUT….many people deliberately leave both pots ‘empty’. I dub these people the

“Non-refillers”. They either just don’t care about anyone else, like to make others suffer in their frustration as they figure out there is no coffee readily available or – they just hide behind “OHH – I DON’T KNOW HOW TO MAKE IT, PLUS I WAS TOO BUSY”. Busy? I’ve seen you do this act (not refill) several times! :-S

Most people afflicted with this type of personality disorder don’t see anything wrong with the way they are behaving (treating others) ; they believe it is the rest of the world that is out of step. Thus, the

“Non-refiller” may have a vision of making others miserable and may think that lack of consideration will give them a purpose

- knowing the next person that will get a cup of coffee after them will have to refill the pot. This makes them happy. The

“Non-refiller” sees nothing wrong with this, or, again….just doesn’t care.

DEAR, This is a common problem in many office places, there’s usually one person on each floor that comes in early and gets the cof-fee started before others get there. To these people, we salute you and your courteous-ness. When these people are not in the office howeer, it’s almost like people forgot how to make coffee, they think there are coffee fairies flitting around refilling the pots when they get low. We all know this is not the case and that there is a certain flowchart that should be followed when dealing with the ebb and flow of the coffee consumption. Feel free to print out the flow chart so that those people who are not in the know can follow along to know when a new pot should be made.

SINCERELY YOURS,JO KING

DEAR JOSEPHINE continuedDEAR JOSEPHINE,

Working in a building with a bunch of people brings situations with different types of people and different habits. Most days I am tolerant of bathroom messes, break room refrigerator smells/science experiments and borderline invasions of personal space. But this one is really getting annoying. Smokers who use the elevator immediately after taking a smoke break. I write this being an ex-smoker myself and I understand that the cigarette

smell lingers and most people are not fans of being near a walking ash tray. One after-noon when the wild fires were burning and the Southern Oregon skies were filled with smoke, I stepped into the elevator to take a quick trip up to my desk. I noticed a group of people walking toward the elevator and I held the elevator door open for them. When the group immediately walked into the elevator I was engulfed with cigarette stank. The group was obviously oblivious

to the Pigpen from Peanuts aroma that surrounded them and they didn’t care. For those of you who decide to smoke dur-ing work hours or on your work break…..take the stairs and leave those of us who take the elevator once in a while to enjoy a smoke free lift to our desks.

Sincerely,

SMOKEY THE BEAR

Jo King - Worked for Lithia 15 years, started as a temp and never left after the job was done. You can find her in the stairways or elevator. She has high aspirations of being on Food Network’s Iron Chef so in her spare time you can find her at Shoji’s cooking with her own “secret ingredient.”

DEAR SMOKEY THE BEAR

THERE IS IN FACT ELEVATOR ETI-QUETTE THAT SOME PEOPLE CHOOSE TO IGNORE, OR THEY JUST AREN’T AWARE OF IT. I HAVE LISTED A FEW OF THE TOP CONCERNS WE ARE FACED WITH REGARDING THE ELEVATOR. THE EASIEST SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM, IS FOR THE SMOKERS TO WASH THEIR HANDS BEFORE THEY RIDE IN AN ENCLOSED SPACE. HOPEFULLY THIS HELPS ANSWER SOME QUESTIONS FOR THOSE OUT THERE THAT WERE UNINFORMED REGARDING PROPER ELEVATOR ETIQUETTE.

SINCERELY YOURS,JO KING

1. Sanitation and hygiene is an etiquette that should be observed inside the eleva-tor. There are those who may not be aware that they have the kind of smell that will turn other stomachs out. IE, Body Odor or lingering cigarette smoke odor. In taking the elevators, one should take into consid-eration the other people taking the elevator. Thus if they have that smell and could not do anything about it, they should at least see to it that they are alone when they take the elevator.

2. A simple elevator etiquette that is fre-quently violated is not taking the elevator when one needs to go only one floor up or one floor down. This simple practice not only conserves electricity but also is a good healthy exercise but most people ignore this because they are so used to taking the elevator or just too lazy to exert effort in climbing the stairs. There is also a hubbub challenge that goes along with this list. It encourages us to take the stairs instead of the elevator when going up to your work space.

3. Many people prefer to ride an elevator in silence; therefore when in the elevator, be mindful of your conversations with co-workers, especially in the presence of external customers (i.e., clients, patients, family members, vendors, or guests).

4. If you are sick, carry a handkerchief or tissues to cover your mouth and nose in case you need to sneeze or cough.

5. Refrain from using your Cell Phone while riding in the elevator, except in an emergency. No one wants to hear about what you’re having for dinner, or the dr’s appointment you have coming up to figure out what that rash is.

Rigo Sr. came to the Medford area ready to settle down, slow the pace and is determined to provide childhoods free of angst and mediocrity for his sons. He desires college educations for all his boys. He reads to them daily and encourages them to take advantage of this “free knowledge”. He teaches by example, reading to calm his core, for wisdom, and for inspiration. One of seven children; five boys and 2 girls- Rigo roots for the Lakers, likes to work on cars, enjoys upbeat music-pop/dance, praises his wife’s Mexican food, but must have sushi at Misoya Bistro at least once a week. In another place and time he may have been an NBA player or a profes-sional snowboarder. Take some time to stop and speak with Rigo… ask him about the motor oil on the floor in the men’s locker room at a local athletic club… it will give you a much needed laugh!

Picture a young Hispanic man frantically sifting through overgrown grass on the side of the freeway- searching for his son’s first pair of shoes; treasures which have flown out of an open box from the back of a pick- up truck. Plagued by memories of his early years - a kid growing up in Los Angeles where children who wore nice shoes had them stolen off of their feet- this young father of three searched until dusk and still has that pair of shoes to remind him of how different his life has become.

Rigo is responsible for the exterior maintenance and the interior janitorial services. He, along with David Alonso and Ramon Merlos work endlessly to keep our home spic and span. Ten years ago Rigo moved from Los Angeles to the Rogue Valley and went to work for Rogue Office Installations and quickly rose to be-ing the team leader. He drew the attention of Eric Patterson who requested that he do Lithia’s installations. This resulted in Rigo doing sub-contracted work for Lithia dur-ing the last seven years. This work and the dissolution of Rogue Office Installations prompted the evolution of his own busi-ness- Rigo’s Office Cleaning Service. He has five employees and five large accounts. He is on call seven days a week. A typical day starts at 9:00 a.m. and may not end until 2:30 a.m the following day. Rigo acknowledges that marriage is the bal-ance in his life. The grocery store, Relay for Life, work, department stores, salons, hospitals and doctors’ offices are just a few of the many organization rallying together to make a difference.

2.8 Million. What’s this? The number of walking survivors of Breast Cancer today! What an incredible number considering “1 in every 8 women will be diagnosed.”

AS ALWAYS…… we want you to participate! Here are a few ideas: » VOLUNTEER–Relay for Life, Ameri-

can Cancer Society, charity events etc. » SUPPORT – Round up your change

at the local grocery store or donate when you can or have the opportunity

Now that you have ideas on how to help others and make a difference in the fight; here is what you need to know about help-ing yourself.

When we think about breast cancer we au-tomatically think about a woman being at risk, but actually 1 in every 1000 men will be diagnosed. This is significantly less than women, but not to be overlooked. Think about this, ½ of all deaths could be prevented by making healthy choices.

Here’s what you can do: » Have a diagnosis detection plan » Watch your weight » Exercise Regularly » Be aware of the genes in your family

and avoid specific medications or trig-gers that have effected family members

» Do monthly self-exams » Make sure to get clinical breast exams

and mammograms. (Your age and pre-vious health conditions will determine your frequency)

LIKE ALWAYS, THERE’S A CHALLENGE…The Lithia Hubbub challenge, “Pink Aware” is asking you to start a balance challenge. You will be asked to participate in the national fight to end breast cancer by both doing something to help yourself and someone else. You can use one of our ideas or create your own. You must check-in and tell us what you did to support the fight. Any check-in’s that do not include a comment will not be counted. Once you have successfully checked in 4 times your odds of winning the iPad just got that much better.

We anticipate choosing from our pool of participants in December. The more chal-lenges you complete the more chances you have to win! So get on those challenges!

COMMON EATS

AN UNCOMMONLY GOOD DEAL

Sunrise Café is a family owned and operated business opened in March of 2010 by brother and sister Ed Chun and Carol Hendricks. Located on the corner of Main & Central in Downtown Medford, Sunrise Café is bringing freshly made Hawaiian Island style faire to your neighborhood six days a week. The cafe prides itself on providing a great place to eat, meet and laugh. They also pride themselves on making everything fresh – the only thing in this restaurant that comes from

a can is the Spam! (Because let’s face it – it wouldn’t be an authentic Island-style restau-rant if Spam wasn’t an option!)

If you haven’t had a chance to sample the deliciousness offered at Sunrise yet, you’re missing out. The breakfast sandwich puts any fast food to shame – in taste, quality, and speed of service! Call ahead and Carol will have it waiting for you – or spend a couple minutes gathering your thoughts on your morning break while you wait. If you prefer your breakfast smothered in gravy (and really, who can blame you?) then the Loco Moco is for you. It’s a combo of fried eggs and meat of your choice served over rice with a delec-table mushroom and onion gravy slathered over all. Yum. For lunch my hands-down favorite is the “Island Tacos” – a trio of pulled pork, Huli Huli chicken, and teriyaki flank steak served with mango salsa, coleslaw, and corn tortillas. If spicy is the name of your game – you’re going to want the Spicy Ko-rean Pork plate lunch – they’re not messing around here, if you request a seven on the spiciness scale, you’re getting a SEVEN. Just looking for a snack? You can’t go wrong with the freshly baked mango bread.

Café hours have recently changed – Sunrise is now open from 8 a.m. - 3 p.m. Monday thru Saturday. Breakfast is served until 11 a.m. Stop by and say Aloha!

Save 10% off your meal (dine-in or take out) or catering order with your Lithia employee badge. Valid 9/25/2013 – 12/31/2013

“They live, but they are dying to “MEAT” you! Freddy, Jason, Leatherface and Pinhead all await you at the Nightmare Chamber - Titans Of Terror Haunted House. A haunted house experience put on by the Randall Theatre Company of Medford. Located at the corner of Front & 3rd Streets, one block North of Porters Restaurant in Downtown Medford. The haunted house is put together by theatrical professionals who know the art of stage-craft - set building, decor, pneumatics (air driven pop up scares), electronics, prop making, lighting and of course - act-ing. No expense is spared to bring special effects to life to curdle even the most thick of blood. An event so scary, you’ll wet your friends pants! Each villain has a section of the haunted house and each section is themed to the movie the villains starred in. This is not a high school haunted house, but a professional grade haunt fest!

This is the 4th year for the haunted house, which is all indoors - safe from the rain. It is a main fundraiser for the Randall The-atre in Medford. The Randall is coming towards the end of their third season at their black box theater home on Front and 3rd Streets. The haunted house brings in half the money that is needed to keep the theater going for a year.

Detail is the name of the game for this haunted house, which is an all dark maze where people are encouraged to use their cell phones for their only light source. Computers are used to drive the many scary props used within the haunted house. Props like “The Acid Spitter”, where a zombie jumps from a vat of acid (Colored water) and sprays it at the patrons walking through the house and the half man illusion where a man is suspended from chains and his lower half is gone

while he talks to you are only two of many features to be found within.

Tickets cost $10 at the door, but Lithia employees receive a 10% discount by showing their Lithia ID at the door. They and one other can receive the discount as long as one of the two has their ID. Hotdogs, popcorn, candy and sodas will be available at the concessions counter at the theater.
