I look forward to seeing all of you in Bloomington , MN this year. It is shaping up
to be a fantastic conference. I have to give credit to my committee and the folks in
Minnesota. They are working very hard to make this all happen. It is hard to be-
lieve that this is the 30th Anniversary of AACE. I would love to hear from all of you
concerning what conferences you have been to and the things you loved about them.
I want to make a quote board for our anniversary. My first one was in 1999 in St.
Louis. Send me yours!

CLASS Previews Housing Inspections: Instructor Greg Smith. This course will provide the attendees
with an overview of the creation and implementation of a rental inspection program within their
jurisdiction and how to conduct housing inspections. Referencing the 2015 International Prop-
erty Maintenance Code the instructor will cover the basics of how to create an inspection pro-
gram, how to interpret and enforce code requirements, and walk through the inspection pro-
cess using photos of actual violations. The attendees will interact with the presentation and
the instructor by identifying code violations and applying the correct code section from the
IPMC.
Solving the Puzzle: Identifying and Understanding Hoarding Disorder: Instructor Greg Smith En-
countering a hoarding situation in a housing unit can be like solving a puzzle. Finding the right pieces to match,
knowing where to place them and seeing the bigger picture through all of it can be a daunting task for any code en-
forcement officer. Greg Smith has over 10 years’ experience dealing with hoarding situations on a professional and
personal level. By sharing his experiences as a municipal inspector and family member of a hoarder Greg will help
code enforcement officers solve the ever-changing puzzle that is hoarding.
Legal Aspects of Code Administration: Instructor Marcus Kellum .
This session will provide an understanding of the legal foundation upon which code enforcement rests. Participants
will learn many of the legal parameters in which they must work, including the history of ordinances and their enforce-
ment, the hierarchy of laws and courts, the structure of local government, constitutional provisions relating to enforce-
ment cases, “home rule,” state laws relevant to enforcement cases, common ordinance provisions, types of court
proceedings and the courts in which they are brought.
Legal, Ethical and Moral Code Enforcement . Instructor Marcus Kellum .
Legal, Ethical and Moral Code Enforcement - Ethics and morals relate to “right” and “wrong” conduct. While they are
sometimes used interchangeably, they are different. Is following the rules the safest option? This course is designed
to explore the world of these concepts in a regulatory environment and to help officers and inspectors develop prac-
tices to stay abreast of the right and wrong things to do during their daily workday.
IPMC CRASH COURSE: Instructor Tana Bryant This course is a two part series. The Property Maintenance
class will cover the 2018 updates and a general overview of the code . This class is very helpful if you are planning
on taking ICC Certification classes.
International Zoning Code Crash Course: Instructor Tana Bryant. : The Zoning Class will be a crash
course and touch on a few Updates If you are planning on taking an ICC Certification class this would be very helpful
Verbal and Non-Verbal Communication: Instructor Matthew Christianson: Our perceptions, beliefs,
fears or body language can create communication pathways or barriers. The way we communicate either creates an
open dialog with those to whom we are speaking or it creates barriers and
walls. As code enforcement professionals is imperative that we have the skills
to maneuver through the land mines when communicating with those under
enforcement of the laws in our jurisdictions. Through effective conscious and
subconscious communication styles we can create a positive outcome in a
potentially negative or hostile situation.
This is just a small taste of the classes. Others will be a
class on the 4th amendment, Marketing Your Code Program ,
Class: Golden Valley Supreme Court Case , Safety and
Awareness , Bed Bugs and Cockroaches Oh My and many
more great classes.
For the very first time AACE will be presenting an entire day of classes

This is a great lineup of classes not only for current managers but also for others
that want to advance to a managerial position.
After the full day of classes is completed, all management class attendees will
receive a special certificate designating that they have successfully completed this
course track.
The classes being offered on that Thursday are:

I will admit that I am not much of a
shopper but I LOVED the Mall of
America. There is something for
every member of the family here.
You can experience roller coasters,
log rides, zip lining and many more
adventures in the amusement park.
There is also stores such as the
Crayola Experience. I wanted to
make my own crayons so bad!
There is mini golf and the Minnesota
Sea Life Aquarium. Please check
out the malls web page.
A shuttle runs every twenty minutes
to the mall. Three minute ride. You
can also go by rail in one minute!
