Dear Friends, As we begin Respect Life month I invite you to join with Catholic brothers and sister here in the Skagit Valley and around the United States to reflect on and give thanks for God’s precious gift of life. In particular, I lift up two special opportunities sponsored by the Respect Life Committee of our Skagit Valley Catholic Churches to grow in appreciation and understanding of this gift:
Please take a few minutes to read and reflect on the Respect Life inserts that will be included in our Valley bulletins all four Sundays of October. These thoughtful and timely reflections in English and Spanish are produced by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). I am grateful to the Knights of Columbus Councils in the Skagit Valley for generously helping underwrite the printing costs. Join us on Monday evenings 7:00-8:30 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Church in Mount Vernon (400 N. 15th Street) for an all-Valley speaker series focusing on current life issues. Themes and speakers include:
October 08 Beginning of Life Issues Katie Lodjic, Valley parishioner and Regional Director, Students for Life October 15 Emerging Challenges of Genetics Richard Doerflinger, Valley parishioner and former Associate Director of the
Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities, USCCB October 22 End-of-Life Decisions Richard Doerflinger, Valley parishioner and former Associate Director of the
Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities, USCCB October 29 Funerals: What, Why, and How Fr. Tom (me) with help from Valley parishioners and funeral directors Kirk
Duffy and Doug Hutter, and SVCC staff person Kitty Pederson Finally, I offer my thanks to our Respect Life Committee and all who work in our communities year-round to support and protect the sacred gift of life. In Christ, Fr. Tom
October 7, 2018 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time
“So out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name.” (Genesis 2:19)
The creation story reminds us of two important points. First, since the start, God has put the entire world into our care. Second, stewardship has been around since the beginning of mankind, it isn’t something recently invented by the Church. Just as past generations built our Church, it is now our responsibility to continue to nurture and develop these gifts for future generations.

Hearing Assistance Did You Know?
Immaculate Conception’s sound system has a hearing assisted component. If you wear a hearing aid, we have units that have a loop you wear around your neck and the sound is sent directly to your hearing aid. If you do not use a hearing aid, we can provide a unit that will give you the sound through a sound bud you place in your ear. Although it will not be in stereo, your personal head-phones may work with the unit if you prefer. If you would like to try a unit, ask an usher for assistance.

October 7th, Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time
Brothers and sisters: He "for a little while" was made "lower than the angels, " that by the
grace of God he might taste death for everyone. For it was fitting that he, for whom and
through whom all things exist, in bringing many children to glory, should make the leader
to their salvation perfect through suffering. He who consecrates and those who are being
consecrated all have one origin. Therefore, he is not ashamed to call them 'brothers.'
Hebrews 2: 9-11
llamarlos "hermanos". Hebreos 2: 9-11
