Did you know that Fordhad its own pilots to testthe B-24 Liberators it wasbuilding for the ARMY atthe rate of one every 55MINUTES!! A little bit ofhistory for aviation buffs. This was BEFORE PearlHarbor! Ford's B-24Bomber Plant was at WillowRun, Mich. Henry Ford wasdetermined that he couldmass produce bombers justas he had done with cars.He built the Willow Runassembly plant and provedit. It was the world'slargest building under oneroof. This film willabsolutely blow you away -one B-24 every 55minutes.

I'm very interested in selling my ModelTT. I've attached a couple of pictures -The previous owner put a Model Aengine in it, but that shouldn't bedifficult to replace if a new ownerwanted to keep it original. I have all ofthe equipment necessary to finishputting it back together (except the Tengine).

The pictures don't show the hood -but, I have that as well.  I'm alsosending along a drawing of what thepiece will look like when completed.

It's one of 7 that exist - all of theothers are in museums.  This is theonly one known to be owned in privatehands.

Fun T Club Tour to Chiefland

By Karen Krawchuck

Pictures by Adam Krawchuck

On Saturday, March 21st,Adam and I set off for yetanother adventure in theModel T. No trailer this time,so I packed one small bag, putit on the back seat, and off wewent.

We were scheduled to meet theFun T group at the intersectionof 301 and 50 in the smalltown of Ridge Manor. Weattempted to take mostly backroads, but a Google mapmishap (one road did notexist), unintentionally put usback onto highway 50.Fourteen miles later, wearrived at our meeting place.

When the fun T group arrived,we were on our way! Therewere six cars, including us, onthe tour. We enjoyed thebeautiful weather as weweaved our way through somesmall towns. The last leg onSaturday was a 47 mile drive

up 19 into Chiefland. Myduties went from navigating tokeeping the driver awake, why

can't they put some bends inthat road??

At last, we arrive at theQuality Inn at around 5:15PM. Once all were checked in,we stood in the parking lot andscanned the area forrestaurants within walkingdistance. Getting back in thecar was not an option for us.Riding in a T from 10 AM-5:15 PM.....you get the picture!

Good news, an Italian/ Greekrestaurant was two doorsdown. We had 16 people inour tour group, so took up alarge section and enjoyed eachother's company. Adam and Ihad the pleasure of sitting withJohn McMullen, a gentlemanthat we had met at a fewprevious tours. After eatingway too much, we walkedback to the hotel and sataround the pool, talked, andenjoyed getting to knowpeople!

Sunday morning, up and out!We were on the road by 8:30because we had reservationsfor a boat tour in Dunnellon,

50 miles away. We arrived in

Dunnellon ( passing anawesome Blues Brothersstatue), parked the cars andwalked down to theWithlacoochie River.

At around 11:15 we took TheSinging Boat Tour (yes, therewas singing), and learned a lotabout the Withlacoochie andRainbow Rivers. We docked atCity Hall at 12:30ish, youguessed it, off to lunch!

Nine miles down the road, weended up at a place calledStumpknockers. From myeducational boat tour, I learnedthat this strange name is

Page 9: of North Central Floridaof North Central Florida April, 2015 TLC Logo March Cruise in at The Villages b The featured car club, the T-Birds, brought about 25 beautiful 1955-57 Thunderbirds

actually a type of fish. Tablefor 16 please! Food, conversation and smiles allaround. We enjoyed a greatlunch (and dinner for us!), andhit the road again. One last stop, for gas. As the ladies handed

off the key to the lovelyrestroom at Citgo, we said ourgoodbyes. We would beturning off the route soon, asthe rest of the group headedback to Dade City.

When we reached highway 48,Adam and I turned left as thetour turned right. Nobody tofollow, we headed throughCenter Hill and eventually gotto highway 27. About tenmiles later, the car smiled asshe saw the garage, it wasaround 6 PM. We logged 252miles and she did beautifully.I learned that Model T's were

not built for comfort on longtrips. No lumbar support, a bitbouncy, and how do you turn

the heat off??Honestly, a greatweekend. We made some newfriends, learned a bit aboutdifferent parts of our beautifulstate, and guess what, we atetoo much!

We took a lot of pictures.

The Hal Roach Studios prop department was keptbusy with very damaged but still working versions ofour beloved Model Ts

Did you ever wonder how Laurel and Hardy ended upwith this shortened version of the Model T?

Well, watch this video, “Hog Wild” and find out.

Passover is April 3-11

February 27 I was visiting family inCape Coral and happened upon arestaurant I think you’d enjoy. Thedécor was made up of Model A andModel T parts and tools on thewalls, plus pictures of Henry Ford,Thomas Edison and HarveyFirestone throughout.

There was aModel T on a liftover the insidebar and a ModelA, also on a lift, over the outsidebar. Every 20-30minutes a loudAHOOOGA hornwould sound anda large cloud ofsteam would bedischarged fromback of the cars.Blue lightingsimulated smoke.

At the outside portion of the placewas an old flatbed truck, where thebed was restored and converted toa large table.

There were antique gas pumps, door handles made of gas pumpnozzles, and a rest room with sinksmade of old wheels.

No detail was spared.

The menu fare was very good andreasonable. Hamburgers wereHUGE! There was a nice variety ofmenu items for all tastes.

Both bars had hammered coppersurfaces and a cooled strip built into keep your beer cool.

There are three Ford’s Garagerestaurants, the original located indowntown Fort Myers. I plan tovisit all of them over time.

Here are some pictures I took orthe interior.

Last week Lizzie musthave been impressedwhen she felt me fillingher tires to the properinflation! Fresh greaseand oil were added to allher creaking parts, andadjustments were madeso she was as shipshapeas ever. This was moremaintenance than usual. What could warrant suchattention? Could it beanother Winter Tour?

Here are someobservations:

Saturday: Early inthe morning my buddy

Ralph DePalmaand John Farr

Ralph DePalma and Iheaded over to fellow TinLizzie Club member JimCollop’s place to borrowa trailer. Jim rebuildsModel Ts and Model Asand the stuff his yardkeeps changing. Old carparts are everywhere.

His projects are diverseand always interesting.

Jim greeted us with hisever-ready smile, anddirected us to one oftwo available trailers. He even helped us hookit up, and we were onour way to my house inThe Villages to loadLizzie. Lizzie was idlyparked with no ideahow many adventuresshe’d be experiencing inthe next few days.

We loaded her on thetrailer and headed toGainesville. Most of thetrip was on I-75, andwe made great time.Parking at the GatewayGrand Hotel was wellorganized and we hadLizzie back on terrafirma in no time.

Hotel check-in wasefficient, as waschecking in for the tour.Friendly volunteersissued T-shirts and a“goodie bag” with lotsof neat things for us tokeep. A green folderhad extensive routeinstructions developedby Dan Treace, andother colorfulinformation was

included to describe theweek’s events.

Sunday: We were toleave at 11:30 AM to doeither the 60 mile WaldoFlea Market or the 27mile Dudley FarmHistoric State Park. Wechose the latter andreally enjoyed the historyof the farm, which hadoriginal buildings datingback to the mid-19th

Century. Both toursended with a visit

to the Devil’s MillhopperGeological Site.Discovered in the 1880s,It is an inverted cone-shaped 120 foot deepsinkhole created byerosion thousands ofyears ago. There are 232steps to the bottom!

We missed the 2 PMdeadline for the Santa FeCollege Teaching Zoo, sowe headed to the hotel.

The Opening Banquet, asalways, was great! Theever-present RayHarper was there totake our pictures.

Master of Ceremoniesand Tour MeisterExtrordinaire Steve Elliswas his usualentertaining self - funny, well organized andknowledgeable about allthings Model T. Itseemed that he knewjust about everyone onthe tour! The GatewayGrand did an excellentjob of cateringthroughout the Tour. Wegave credence to theT-shirt slogan that “allwe do is drive aroundand eat stuff.”

Adam and KarenKrawchuck

Each evening ourextended group offriends would gather in

the room off the lobbylater used for breakfast. We had many laughsthere, which makes toursmuch more than drivingon some beautiful roads!

Monday: We firstvisited the 62 acreKanapaha BotanicalGardens. Many plantswere already in bloom

and many more wouldblossom soon. Pathstook us through bamboogroves, lakes, streamsand waterfalls. It wasenchanting!

We had lunch on ourown (plenty of eateriesin Gainesville). With thehelp of Adam and

Karen Krawchuck’s smartphone skills, we chose theAle house for a great lunch. Then we were off to theUniversity of FloridaMuseum of Natural History, where we met a T Rexnamed Sue, whounfortunately did notsurvive a vegetarian dietregimen.

This was followed by a tourof the Butterfly Rainforest,

whose beautifulInhabitants were one of thetour’s highlights.

Ron Simmons wason his first tour

Page 17: of North Central Floridaof North Central Florida April, 2015 TLC Logo March Cruise in at The Villages b The featured car club, the T-Birds, brought about 25 beautiful 1955-57 Thunderbirds

Dinner was on our ownand we chose the Hotel’srestaurant, the Gator’sDen, which had great foodand service.

Tuesday: After a goodride, we arrived at GinnieSprings State Park (openthis link to see Steve Ellis’red 6 post express in thebanner), where we weretreated to free coffee anddonuts before visiting theSprings. There were twosprings, each with manydivers willing to gothrough the springs’

Divers at Ginnie Springs

fissures to explore thenatural caves below - upto 85 feet deep! Therewere river float tubes forrent and a host of otheractivities for all ages.

On the way to our nextcheckpoint, Trenton, therewas a stop at a carrestoration shop namedHugenics, where theowner graciously answeredall questions. At Trentonwe visited a Quilt Shopand other historicbuildings. Lunch was on

our own and we opted forthe LighthouseRestaurant in FanningSprings. Great food!

Patty Meyers

After lunch we drovedown the street to thevisitor area by the swift-moving Suwannee River. Then it was on to theAndrews WildlifeManagement Area, whereour instructions said “youwill enjoy 5+ miles ofsand/gravel roadsthrough a State forest, adjoining the SuwanneeRiver.” What was notmentioned was that therewas only one way in/out.Many of us drove throughthese sandy roadslooking for an exit on thefar end. No dice.

We arrived back home tothe ice cream social(excellent!), followed bythe auction, featuring ourvery own auctioneer,Steve Ellis! Since theauction proceeds go tosupport next year’sWinter Tour, bidding isalways generous and noone can leave Steve’s

auction without sayingthey had a lot of laughsand much FUN!

Charlotte & David Corman

Wednesday: Off toCarson Springs WildlifeSanctuary, a privateorganization where bigcats and other exoticanimals call home.

After that, we drove on toa healthy and deliciouslunch provided by theInstitute of Culinary Artsat East Side High School.

After lunch we stopped atGainesville’s originalwaterworks, the Boulware

Page 18: of North Central Floridaof North Central Florida April, 2015 TLC Logo March Cruise in at The Villages b The featured car club, the T-Birds, brought about 25 beautiful 1955-57 Thunderbirds

Spring. Many cyclists andrunners entered here toaccess the La Chua Trailwhich goes through thePayne’s Prairie Preserve.

We later met in the hotelparking lot for a “swapmeet” to sample thewares of fellow Model Ttour participants. LaterRalph and I enjoyed agreat Italian restaurantnearby, and after that, ofcourse, we again gatheredin the hotel for somegood-natured fun.

Thursday: our lasttour day was spent byleisurely driving on ruralroads and visiting a fewsmall towns in the area.

Our first town was theHistoric District ofAlachua (locallypronounced: alach-u-way). Our arrival was tooearly for the shops to beopen, so we proceeded onto Chastain Seay Park, right on the Santa FeRiver. After a nice legstretch we were off toanother dirt road and onto High Springs and lunch

at the Great OutdoorsRestaurant. This placehad great decorationsand was very large. Theymanaged toaccommodate our groupwith fast service andgreat food - a testamentto their efficiency!

Our last day ended earlyand when we returned tothe hotel we had plentyof time to load up ourcars and cover them, asnighttime rain was

forecast. With theexception of a shortcloudburst Tuesdayevening, This was theonly rain we experiencedduring the Tour! Everyday the weather was inthe comfortable loweighties with mostly“poofy” clouds. It wasthe most perfectweather we could haveasked for.

The Closing Banquet atthe Gateway Grand wasexcellent! Many in theTour wore periodcostumes, which made ita festive affair. Livedance music and songplayed into the night.

Joan & John Cornale

During the Tour we got tosee some of the hugeUniversity of FloridaCampus and many othersights not mentionedhere. And yes, there are

hills in Florida!

Lizzie performedflawlessly, save a stoplightswitch, which was easilyrepaired when wereturned home. Sheseemed to enjoy followingthe Krawchuck’s car, knowing it would alwaysfollow the proper roads.

Other Members of our TinLizzie Club of NorthCentral Florida whoattended the Tour wereChuck and Gloria Ufkes,Harrie and SuzieBurdan, Mike Romano,Jimmy Loux, and Benand Ann Wasman.
