Manitoulin Island Naval Vet Celebrates 100th Birthday

A Manitoulin Island naval veteran who saw action on D-Day turned 100 last week.Allan Tustian was one of Canada’s first Asdic operators, commonly-known as sonar, which detected submarines during the Second World War.Tustian served for four years from 1941 to 1945 including the Battle of Atlantic and the landing at Normandy during D-Day.His contributions were acknowledged this weekend in Mindemoya by shipmates from the Manitoulin North Shore Naval Veterans, which he also assisted in establishing 35 years ago, as well as family and friends.Tustian served on three Royal Canadian Navy warships — a destroyer, a corvette and a frigate, including the HMCS Timmins, on escort for 43 convoys in the Battle of the Atlantic. He also saw service in D-Day events. For his distinguished war service, Tustian was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, the Atlantic Star with the France and Germany

Clasp, the Canadian Volunteer Medal, and the War Medal. In 1985, he was awarded the Russian Arctic Star for his Murmansk convoy service. In the spring of 2013, he was awarded the Arctic Star by the government of Great Britain for his service above the Arctic Circle. He returned to Manitoulin Island, Lake Mindemoya and Treasure Island Lodge. It was on Treasure Island that he met his future wife, Alma Smeltzer. Tustian and Alma were married on February 17th, 1950.Tustian is the father of six children, four boys and two girls, grandfather to 15 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

PHOTOS - Allan Tustian turned 100 last week. His contributions during the Second World War, and after, were acknowledged with cake, certificates and plaques with shipmates and family on Saturday. He served on three different warships including the HMCS Timmins during wartime. Photos provided by Roy Eaton, WW2 archives and Veterans Canada.

Four-legged friends on Manitoulin Island got a helping hand thanks to two organizations focused on pet care.Mobile units from the Niagara SPCA and Humane Society and Ontario SPCA were in Wikwemikong last week as part of their province-wide program to assist under-serviced communities in Ontario.John Greer with the Niagara SPCA says they performed nearly 100 spay/neuter procedures and close to 200 animal wellness examinations in the three days, they were on the Island. He adds the state-of-the-art

Going To The Dogs … In A Good Waymobile units are fully equipped and staffed, and are a crucial tool in providing such services in Ontario.

Canada--’Apologies R Us.’Police in Summerside, Prince Edward Island had a warning for locals this past summer--quit being so polite! Apparently so many drivers were yielding to other motorists and waving them on ahead, a rash of fender benders broke out on city streets. That is just so Canadian--being scolded by a police officer for being too courteous.Rightly so, the rest of the world sees Canadians as exceedingly polite, a nation of people who like to avoid confrontation, behave cordially in all situations and apologize profusely even for the mistakes of others. For example, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has issued four formal apologies for past historic injustices while in office for just four years. (Had he apologized immediately for the SNC-Lavalin scandal, he might have got four more years! Just sayin’.)A study out of McMaster University in 2015 compared the top 10 percent of words used on tweets in both our countries proved beyond a doubt that Canadians are far more polite than Americans. In fact many of the most-frequently used words by Americans had to be bleeped on the study’s website. At the border, US customs officials are all business. Homeland Security has put these people through a myriad of training programs but “Courtesy 101” is not one of them. Coming back into this country the Canadian custom officers are all business...with a smile.

Jeffry Dvorkin, a professor of journalism at the University of Toronto believes that Canadian murder rates are so low because “It’s quite rude to murder someone.” Good luck trying to introduce a little niceness to America’s weekly mass murder.Although Americans are often accused of being rude especially while travelling in other countries I’m here to refute that stereotype. All Americans are not bad-mannered. Richard Joseph McEwan, 26 of Rhode Island is a respectful young man who would make his mother proud. Last week when Richard broke into Taylor Swift’s beachfront mansion in Rhode Island, he took his shoes off at the door. After being charged with breaking and entering and wilful trespassing, Richard explained to the arresting officer that he was always taught to “take his shoes off when entering someone’s home.” Even if he was entering through a basement window he’d bashed in with a crowbar. It must have been Richard’s mother that taught him the importance of being polite. His father taught him how to disable a home security system and hotwire a car with a flashlight battery.Theories on why Canadians happen to be so courteous range from hibernating half the year to harbouring an inferiority complex to Big Brother South.Writing in the Hamilton Spectator, Heather Summerhayes Cariou took an

informal poll and concluded that Canadians who take social democracy very seriously put ourselves collectively ahead of the individual. Americans put their individual rights ahead of the collective. We apologize because we want the system to work smoothly.Me? I just think we are excessively polite to other people because that’s exactly how we would want them to treat us. At the post office or supermarket I often get into a standoff while holding the door for someone who insists I should go in first. I just shake my head and think--now that’s why I love this country. Competitive civility in public!I think we get our sense of humour from the Irish, our work ethic from the Scots and our flair from the French. But we inherited our penchant for politeness directly from the Brits who would rather set their hair on fire than butt into line at the bank.Although they try, the French are not good at apologizing. Last week before an international soccer match between France and Albania in Paris, officials played the wrong national anthem for the visiting team. Instead of Albania they played the national song of Andorra. Just before the correct anthem was about to be played the announcer grabbed the microphone and apologized to

all the “Armenian fans.”

Classic Canadian actor Colin Mochrie’s apology to Americans will still stand up a century from now. “I’m sorry about our softwood lumber. Just because we have more trees than you doesn’t give us the right to sell you lumber that’s cheaper and better than your own. That would be like, well, say you had 10 times the television audience we do, and you flooded our market with great shows, cheaper than we could produce. I know you’d never do that.”“And finally, on behalf of all Canadians, I’m sorry that we’re constantly apologizing for things in a passive-aggressive way, which is really a thinly veiled criticism. I sincerely hope that you’re not upset over this, because we’ve seen what you do to countries you get upset with.”Politeness. Yes, I know it’s kind of corny and probably tiresome to visitors who like life with an edge to it but I swear if one of us slammed into a tree while sleep walking, the first thing we say when we came to would be: “Oh, sorry. Really.” May we never lose our trademark social grace.

In the September 17th issue inaccurate information about the Water Billing Notices to Espanola Residents in regards to multi-tenant residences was provided. The correct information is as follows: For multi-tenant residences in Espanola, the billing of water and wastewater services will depend on the type of tenancy. If water is supplied to only one tenant at a property, the owner may request that the occupant

be billed directly. The Town of Espanola will do so under two conditions: the owner assumes all costs if the tenant fails to pay and an owner/tenant agreement form must be signed by both owner and tenant and submitted to the town office. If water is supplied to more than one tenant through a single waterline, the account shall be billed directly to the property owner.

NOTICE

Welcome to Local Hippie’s weekly tip for living a greener life! Each week we will provide you with a quick tip to help you reduce your carbon footprint and change the world.

This week’s tip is just in time for back to school: stop using plastic snack baggies!

While plastic snack bags may seem convenient, their use comes at a huge environmental cost.Plastic snack bags are not recyclable and are generally only used ONCE before they’re thrown into the trash. Off they go to the landfill where they will sit for hundreds of years, poisoning the earth, finding their way into waterways, and killing innocent animals.

It is estimated that the average North American uses 540 plastic baggies a year. That’s 1 pound of plastic per person per year… from only snack bags! Luckily, there are a few simple solutions:

> Use containers: Swap out those plastic bags and store your snacks or leftovers in containers.> Use beeswax wraps: Used half a lemon? Instead of storing the other half in a bag, wrap it in a reusable wrap.> Invest in reusable bags: At Local Hippie, we have many reusable alternatives to plastic bags that are leakproof, waterproof, and freezer-safe! They come in all shapes in sizes, including large 1 gallon bags.

Have questions? Feel free to forward them to [email protected] or find me at the Espanola Farmers’ Market.Have a happy hippie week!

Friday, October 4, 7:30 pmFriday, October 4, 7:30 pmHOME GAME!!

RecipeI was surfing the internet one day when I came across this recipe and it got my attention right away. Chocolate cake, Skor bits and whipped cream? Yes please! The hardest part of this recipe is baking the boxed cake mix. How easy is that? Wow! That’s all I can say about this cake. Who would have known that by just adding a few extra ingredients to the mix you could produce such a masterpiece of a dessert?

Wow Cake

• 1 box Duncan Hines chocolate cake mix and the ingredients required on the box to make it• 1 (14 oz) can Eagle Brand sweetened condensed milk (reduced fat or fat free taste great too)• 1 (8 oz) jar Smucker’s caramel topping• 1 (8 oz) container Cool Whip thawed to room temp• 3 Skor Candy Bars chopped or a bag of Skor Bits

Bake cake according to package directions in a 9×13 pan. Let cake cool for about 5 minutes.Poke holes in the cake with the handle end of a wooden spoon. While cake is still warm, slowly pour over sweetened condensed milk over the top making sure some gets in all the holes of the cake. Next drizzle the caramel topping evenly over the cake slowly, making sure some gets in all the holes as well. Spread Cool Whip over the top evenly. Sprinkle with Skor pieces. Store in fridge until ready to eat. Store any leftovers in fridge

We want to rst thank our three beautiful daughters, Shannon, Kenzi and Cassidy along with our amazing friend, Tammy for organizing and surprising us at Whiskey lake for our 25th Wedding Anniversary. Thank you to our friends, Gilles, Freddy, Johnny, Jim and Ricky for the fabulous sh and chip fry, what a feast! To our family and friends who travelled from near and far to be with us, for all the food everyone brought to feed this wonderful gang of people, for the beautiful speeches that brought us to tears and the messages from people who couldn't be with us. Thank you everyone for the beautiful gifts, to Freddy for the 25 salute rework show on the beach and ending the night with dancing under the stars by the bonre. We had a blast. Words can't express how blessed we are to have such truly amazing family and friends who have supported us all these years, our hearts are full. It was a weekend that we will never, ever forget!
