MMW was a significant event involving international and national speakers, prominent guests and official representa- tives from the Philippines, South Korea, Japan, and Australia. Filipino-Americans from different organizations attended the events throughout the week and were also ac- tive participants and collaborators in making the celebration a success. High- lights included: A presentation by James Zobel and Cream Pepito on "Behind Enemy Lines" operations in the Philippines before MacArthur's return from Australia. Also featured was a special appearance by Milwaukee area resident Louis Crisostomo, a spy and member of the Allied Intelligence Bureau who gathered intelligence instrumental to the rescue of POWs from the University of Santo Tomas Internment Camp. A presentation by Deputy Consul Victor Romulo Israel on the Evolving Relationship between the Philippines and the United States. Speeches by various community leaders in honor and remem- brance of Jean Faircloth MacArthur, her impact on General Douglas MacArthur and her influence in preserving the Mac- Arthur Legacy. The "PCCCF Munting Tinig Choir" in a heart warming presentation and a special performance of "Old Soldiers Never Die" with Calvin Sommer performing as General Douglas MacArthur under the direction of Jojo Ramos and Dr. Violeta Singson. The MacArthur statue move to the lakefront, rededication ceremony and a solemn wreath laying by consular representa- tives from the Philippines, South Korea, Australia and Japan. Guests in the above programs were touched by the sincerity in the partnership between the Filipino-American community and the organizers of MMW. Eric Wertheim, a defense con- sultant in Washington, D.C., asked if a similarly organized Filipino representation exists in the D.C., area. Members of the VCRT also marveled at the Filipino passion to explore the role of MacArthur in our history. There were several logistical issues encountered during the week that created some inconveniences. Such things made Chas Mulcahy, MMW leader, even more grateful of the Fili- pino-American community's contribution and support of MacArthur Memorial Week. This event, as a whole, opens up opportunities for more collabo- ration in the future. The Filipino-American community is rightfully proud of its history and should even be more proud of the legacy of relationships and opportunities it's able to build for future generations. President’s Corner I can’t believe sum-mer is almost over and school is right around the corner! How time flies! I hope you had a wonderful summer despite the on and off cold days. I know our children did, especially the twins, Mark and Mike, who finally

conquered their fear and are having fun swimming. To make sure Mom and Dad keep up, Kelly and Gavin had a summer full of basketball and baseball games. Although it’s a lot of driving around, I am very happy to see them enjoy and excel in their activities. But what is summer without the FAAWIS Picnic? Through the coordinated efforts of Dr. Marie Rebancos-Abraham, Leo Vitangcol, and the hardworking picnic committee FAAWIS hosted its annual Fiesta Picnic at Wirth Park. Thank you to the over 300 peo-ple who attended the event. What a marvel-ous turnout on a beautiful day! A big shout out goes to PMA-W, UPAA-W, USTAAW, PNA-WI and PCCCF for organizing the booths and to the Filipino Catholic Ministry for hosting the Mass. We thank you and hope you had fun!

Our next big event -- the 42nd Annual Din-ner Dance Gala! Happening September 20th 5:30pm at the Milwaukee Art Museum. We are now taking reservations and you should be receiving the invitation in the mail. The silent auction will start at 5:30pm so please come early. There will be an art display, music, raffles, good food, Filipino desserts and dancing. I’m look-ing forward to seeing everyone in their best formal attire. Please mail your RSVP as soon as possible, remember walk-ins will not be permitted. For advertising options and dona-tions please contact [email protected]. I would like to invite you to other events that honor and recognize fellow Filipinos who have excelled in their fields. First, meet Melissa de la Cruz, one of the most popular Filipino-American writers to-day who will be appearing at the Oak Creek Library on Wednesday, September 10, 6:30pm for the book, “Vampires of Manhat-tan: The New Blue Bloods Coven.” Melissa de la Cruz was born in Manila and grew up in Manila and San Francisco. Melissa used her immigrant childhood to inspire a novel, “Fresh Off the Boat.” The Lifetime cable series “The Witches of East End” was inspired by de la Cruz’s novel of the same title. Both her “Bluebloods” se-ries and the new “Heart of Dread” books, which she wrote with her husband, Michael Johnston, are national bestsellers. Now the

characters from “Bluebloods” are all grown up, fighting evil forces in “Vampires of Man-hattan,” a sexy supernatural thriller for adults. The Oak Creek Library is located at 8620 S. Howell Avenue, just off Drexel Ave-nue. For more information, contact Boswell Books at (414) 332-1181. Additionally, my favorite band, Journey, will be coming to Milwaukee! The lead singer is Filipino born, Arnel Pineda. Arnel was born in Sampaloc, Manila. His mother nurtured his love for singing at an early age, encouraging him to sing along to songs from his favorite singers like Karen Carpenter and Barbra Streisand. He came to prominence in the Philippines during the 1980s and internationally in 2007 as the lead singer of the American rock band Journey. Journey will be performing at the BMO Har-ris Pavilion on Wednesday, September 3rd. Doors open at 6:30pm and the show will start at 8:00pm. Let’s support our fellow Kababayans by attending one, if not all, of these events. It would really be wonderful to see a good crowd cheering for them. That’s it for now. I hope to see you guys at our Dinner Dance event! Yours truly, Joyce W. Coury President

2014 FAAWIS Picnic By Tom Hey – FAAWIS President-Elect

T he FAAWIS Annual Picnic on June 14, 2014 at beautiful Wirth Park in Brookfield was a huge success! In perfect weather, and

in the shade of decades old sugar maple and red oak trees picnickers enjoyed delectable food, great entertainment, games, activities galore, and the wonder-ful community of friends and family (new and old). An early volleyball competition and mid-morning mass drew many faithful. At noon (with the grounds full) the cele-bration continued in a most traditional way – with food! Everyone enjoyed plenty of food, with a spread of Filipino favorites and American standbys. Many picnickers found time to visit sponsoring event tents to create wonderful art, ac-cept a literacy challenge, or even get their blood pressure checked. And after what could only be called a great feast the youth performers brought the energy level up several notches with traditional Filipino and modern dance. The live band then kicked the games and

competitions into high gear throughout the afternoon, and pulled in picnickers of all ages. Who knew musical chairs could almost be conquered by a septua-genarian? Occasional shouts of delight were heard as raffle win-ners were called and prizes col-lected. By mid-afternoon the shelter had cleared of musical chairs and other competitions and the band

kicked into overdrive. Before it seemed possi-ble however it was time to go. So as pic-nic baskets, coolers and tired picnickers left the park, a few hardy celebrants took one last opportunity to kick up their heels on the dance floor as the band played a few last favor-ites. Thank you to all who came, and espe-cially to those who helped make it happen! Hope to see you again next year!

THE UST SINGERS IN WISCONSIN They were featured in the Tap section of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: The UST Singers plays Brookfield Sunday, June 29, 2014. In 2010 they sang Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody at the Cork International Choral Festival in Cork, Ireland where they were awarded the Peace Trophy. They won the hearts of Europeans who consider them a treasure. The UST singers was founded by Professor Fidel Gener Calalang, Jr., in 1992. Since then it has grown into a choir that received

accolades and numerous prizes including the Choir in the World Grand Prize – Luciano Pavarotti Trophy, twice, in 1995 and 2010. This was awarded at the oldest choral competition in the world, the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod, in Wales, the United Kingdom where they met with Pavarotti himself. Their musicality is impeccable, their discipline palpable; they sang their pieces to perfection. On June 29th, guests filled St. John Vianney Church in Brookfield. Their repertoire included sacred songs, Filipino folk songs and Broadway numbers. With Independence Day just five days away, the choir sang “God Bless America" which struck a chord at everyone's heartstrings. The day after the Brookfield concert, the choir performed at Elizabeth Residence in Bayside and San Camillo Residence on Bluemound Road. The group has completed twenty-six international tours that took them to Germany, Poland, Slovenia, the Czech Republic, Hun-gary, Monaco, Austria, the Netherlands, Belgium, Latvia, Sweden, Denmark, Ireland, Switzerland, England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Spain, France, Andorra, Bulgaria, Mexico, Canada, the United States, and many countries in Southeast Asia. On the final night, at their Brookfield motel, there was power failure brought on by a rainstorm that hit parts of Southeastern Wis-consin. A Brookfield couple heard them sing after dinner. He was recovering from surgery but he and his wife joined the group. Some of the singers had already retired to their rooms but they returned, all thirty one of them, and with their conductor, sang a fare-well song for the couple. He was touched by the gesture and in the candlelight one could see tears in his wife’s eyes. What an act of kindness by the sing-ers! They are truly ambassadors of goodwill as they fulfill their mission to promote Philippine cultural heritage overseas. From Milwaukee they travelled to Denver and on to the West Coast where “UST to USA 2014 Tour” was completed. The concert at St. John Vianney, the largest to date in Wisconsin by the UST Singers, was sponsored by the University of Santo Tomas Alumni Association of Wisconsin to benefit a scholarship program at the College of Education of the university.

the country. Most recently, Michael has been enlisted for concert management by Phillip Truckenbrod Con-cert Artists. A native of Waukesha, Wisconsin Michael enjoys his Filipino-American community, and recently returned to perform benefit piano concerts for the UPAA-W and USTAA-W scholarship funds. Justin is the son of Drs. Marie Abraham-Rebancos and Dexter Rebancos.

I am a fully-professed member of the US Province of the Society of the Divine Savior otherwise known as the Salvatorians, which is an apostolic religious society that has an international missionary charac-ter. On the 22nd of June this year, I was ordained a transitional deacon at Mother of Good Counsel Parish in Milwaukee, where I get most of my training on sacramentals and to exercise, whenever called for, some of my faculties. As transitional

deacon I assist the presiding priest at mass by reading the Gospel and delivering the homily. I can do baptism, hold a funeral service, give Viaticum (that is, “food for the journey”) to a dying person, and preside at a wedding (outside the Mass) with the proper delegation from the pastor. I can also do blessings of homes and other things. After thirty years being an Interior Designer, having lived and worked in Manila, five years in Riyadh, KSA, travelled most of Asia to purchase stuff for clients, and worked at the Merchandise Mart in Chicago, IL, among other things, I took a big leap of change from materialism and consumerism into where I am now. The journey is froth with challenges, but I relish the joy of fulfill-ment at ministering to the People of God. I have found the pearl of great prize.

T erm life insurance may be used to accomplish cer-tain business and personal objectives. That is what

some business owners have done. As an example, let’s say “John” is expanding his prac-tice. He has constructed a larger office and is bringing a new partner, “William,” on board who is also putting some equity into the business. The expansion of the business activities, along with the ongoing desire to fi-nancially protect his family, resulted in the need for ad-ditional life insurance. John had three needs. First, the bank required John to obtain life insurance as collateral to qualify for the con-struction loan. Second, John and William agreed to use life insurance to fund a buy-sell agreement in case either of them died. And third, John wanted to add life insur-ance as a benefit for his family to ensure his wife, Penny, and the children would be financially secure. In order to address these needs, John purchases three sepa-rate term life insurance policies, totaling $2 million in coverage. Three Policies for 3 objectives. Q1. John is the owner and insured of a life insurance policy for $250,000. This life insurance is assigned to John’s bank as collateral for the construction loan, and his wife Penny is the beneficiary. If John dies before the construction loan is paid off, the bank would have first right to the proceeds to pay off the balance of the loan. Any amount remaining after paying off the loan would go to Penny. 2. As part of a buy-sell agreement, John is the owner and beneficiary of a second policy for $1,000,000, insur-ing the life of John’s new partner, William. William is also the owner and beneficiary of a policy on John for an equal amount. The buy-sell agreement stipulates that if either partner dies, the remaining partner will use the life insurance proceeds to buy the property and business from his partner’s estate. The living partner would then have complete ownership of the business. This would be considered a funded buy-sell because it gives the living partner the cash needed to buy out the other partner. Without the funding, the living partner may have to take an additional loan on the business to pay off the estate of his partner. This could create additional stress and pres-sure for the on-going business partner. 3. For the third policy, John is the owner and insured with his wife Penny as the beneficiary. The purpose of the $750,000 is so that Penny could comfortably continue on with her and the children’s lives. Also, this money would be used to re-place some of John’s lost income. The money would bridge the gap until financial affairs are in order and the business is sold to its suc-cessor, William.

Conclusion Business owners who wish to explore options for purchasing life insurance need to start by identifying what possible needs they may have. Sharing those ideas with a competent professional is a good place to start so he/she can explain different arrangements that would be helpful to your business and your family. A tax advisor should also be consulted, as certain ownership arrangements have estate and/or gift tax consequences. This type of planning is what can help you face the future with anticipation and not apprehension.
