Each young learner is unique, and it is important to choose an education program that accommodates your child’s personal needs and interests. Yet with so many school options, how do you decide which one is right for your student?
MASTERING BASIC LEARNING TECHNIQUES:
The instruction a student receives in their first few years at school forms the foundation for future academic endeavors, so when researching schools, consider the emphasis placed on proper learning techniques.
• Does the curriculum reinforce content using multiple approaches?
• Does the school support its students in developing connections between subjects?
TEACHING ACADEMIC ACCOUNTABILITY:Students are required to juggle multiple
assignments at once, so it is best to learn time management skills at an early age. Pay attention to how the school promotes academic accountability such as daily/weekly planners or frequent progress reports.
ARE YOU LOOKING FOR A SCHOOL?FOUR KEY FACTORS IN CHOOSING THE RIGHT SCHOOL FOR YOUR STUDENT
FREEDOM TO EXPLORE INTELLECTUAL INTERESTS:
Students who are captivated by their coursework will retain knowledge and return to school each week eager to learn more. You can give your student an advantage by choosing a program that allows them to explore their intellectual passions.
COLLEGE ACCEPTANCE RATES AND SCHOLARSHIPS:
It is important to consider how the academic program will set them up for success in college. You should research each schools’ college acceptance rates, and the average scholarship dollars earned by graduates.

Arts Hero of the MonthA monthly look at our local champions of the arts,
their heartfelt stories and funny anecdotes.
Tom Raffaeli makes tours of Phoenix arts and culture institutions remarkable experiences with his encyclopedic knowledge and infectious enthusiasm. Truth be told, he is quite the institution himself.
Before ground broke at Herberger Theater Center, Raffaeli was a fixture. He was one of the founding associates, a group of volunteers who gave time and treasure to support the center.More than 30 years later he still delights in giving tours and building on his legacy of support.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT “I think the key, especially for older folks like myself, is to inspire people to get involved, to contribute, to donate, to do whatever they can to keep the vitality of life in a city like Phoenix, or a country like this country, or a state like Arizona, going in a very positive way,” Raffaeli says.
In addition to his Herberger support, Raffaeli gives tours of Trinity Cathedral and volunteers at its on-site Olney Gallery. He also helped preserve the OrpheumTheatre.
Learning about cities through arts institutions
WORLD PERSPECTIVE “Before establishing roots in Phoenix in 1974, Raffaeli lived all over the world, a consequence of his father’s military career. He developed the habit of getting to know cities by visiting cultural institutions—the opera houses in Germany, the cathedrals in Italy, the theaters of New York.
Travel, particularly by ship, remains an important part of his retirement life.He goes to appreciate the world, but he’s always glad to return to Phoenix, a place he wants to inspire others to love.
“You have many opportunities and many ways to get involved,” Raffaeli says. “Do it. It will make you a better person, and it will make that place better and everything that surrounds it better.”
Do you know an Arts Hero? Someone who works tirelessly to strengthen, improve and enhance the arts in our community?

Sand-Reckoner Tasting Room5 510 N. 7TH ST. #170
Big city feel and world-class wines in a cozy, art gallery-esque atmosphere.People travel to Tucson for all kinds of different reasons. Life in the big city, however, is not one of them.
But if you’re looking for a big city vibe, sans the subway, you’d do well to head on over to Sand-Reckoner Vineyards Tucson tasting room.
Winemaker Rob Hammelman makes superb wines, having studied and trained in Australia, France, and Colorado, before settling into the high desert of Cochise County. Needless to say, his Old World-meets-New World style is rooted in real world experience. Just try the Sangiovese and Nebbiolo rosé blend and taste for yourself.
But this is a tasting room like no other: in fact, it feels like more of a wine bar than tasting room and Sand-Reckoner does a phenomenal job of keeping the energy high yet intimate. (The ceilings are pretty high, too, if that kind of thing floats your boat.)
Doubling as an art gallery with rotating exhibitions curated by Conrad Wilde Art Gallery, live music is featured every Friday and every first Saturday. If you want the space for something private, that’s an option, too. Just be sure to reach out well in advance.
The interior of the tasting room space is absolutely gorgeous and
modern, with great art pieces to accent the walls. The wines themselves are delicious (and local!), and there’s something for everyone - from a crisp & dry white to a deep & complex red.
-YELP REVIEW, MAY 2018

2017 Rosé5 SAND RECKONERWillcox-based winery Sand-Reckoner might make their wine 50 miles away, but the tasting room is here in Tucson.

Egboro is the creator, curator and cultivator of The Whole Story, a storytelling series at Phoenix Art Museum that elevates and celebrates the black experience. The quarterly show began its third year this month.
FROM HASHTAGS The Whole Story is Egboro’s bold response to a popular narrative about the black experience that was reduced to hashtags – #TrayvonMartin, #SandraBland. It was a conversation going nowhere but to the crowded and confining spaces of fear and anger.
As is her habit, Egboro put a lot of thought into how she could make things better. Sparking conversations with less yelling and more listening through the art of storytelling was her answer.
TO DIALOGUE Egboro, a Phoenix native and first-generation Nigerian-American, produces a show featuring black Arizonans who have profound experiences and messages. Whether the stories ring familiar or are entirely
80,000 square feet of comfortable living space
new, they open doors to discovery and authentic human connections. “In a sense, we’re all storytellers,” Egboro says. “I’m just extra curious about people’s journeys.”
Curiosity and uncommon imagination helped Egboro land the museum venue. Nikki DeLeon Martin, the museum’s director of external affairs, says Egboro’s keen intellect propels ideas and solutions to another level, and her magnetic personality makes her an extraordinary convener.
“She’s lovely in every possible way,” DeLeon Martin says. “Every time I meet her I’m like, ‘You’re so smart and funny and kind and beautiful.’ Every positive thing a person can be, that’s Rachel. … Amazing at every turn.”
Rachel Egboro directs traffic at the intersection of arts and culture, where she helps people make connections. There’s quite a story behind that.

The Tucson native is a playwright and composer. He can sing and act. He can build sets and choreograph.
TRANSFORMATIVE WORK Gremel, who is in his 11th year at Empire High School, works hard at doing what comes naturally. His robust bibliography speaks to some of his genius. There’s always something in the pipeline. He wrote and composed music for “The Brave Knight, Sir Lancelot,” which will be performed in January at Live Theatre Workshop.
EHS Principal Matt Donaldson calls Gremel’s bold, student-centered work to build an award-winning theater program transformative.
“He’s just so good at what he does that I know even if it’s outside the box, he’s going to think through all of those things that need to happen,” Donaldson says. “The guy is just amazing.”
George Bernard Shaw penned the snarky remark that those who can, do; those who cannot, teach.
IMPACT ON FUTURE Michael Martinez, executive director of Live Theatre Workshop, says Gremel, who is technical director for the company, shows extraordinary dedication in ensuring his students have excellent learning experiences and opportunities to grow in theater work.
Gremel’s former students are making their marks in technical theater, in college programs and in community theater. It’s only a matter of time before some reach the big stage.
“There isn’t even a question in my mind,” Martinez says. “Who is doing the most of anybody in Tucson that is affecting what the theater art scene looks like? Easily, Richard Gremel.”
Richard Gremel flips the script: He’s a successful theater arts teacher because he can do everything so well, and does.
