The US Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Agricultural Statistics Service’s (NASS) – Ohio Field Office is

pleased to present the 2017 edition of Ohio Agricultural Statistics Annual Bulletin. This publication, which is also

available on our website, is a compilation of the many statistical reports published over the past year that highlight Ohio’s

diverse agriculture sector.

The statistics in this bulletin showcase this diversity and are used on a regular basis to make informed decisions by

producers, consultants, advisors, government officials, and others. The compilation of this bulletin is a product of the

partnership between the Ohio Department of Agriculture and NASS.

I would like to extend a special thanks to all those producers, agribusinesses, commodity groups, and countless others who

have given their valuable time to provide the information that serve as a basis for these data. Their responses are through

the Internet, mail, via telephone, and face-to-face interviews.

Special thanks also go to the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture enumerators for their outstanding

work in collecting and providing timely and accurate data. Without their dedication to Ohio agriculture, we would be

unable to successfully provide these many data.

The Census of Agriculture is conducted by NASS every 5 years. The 2012 Census of Agriculture was released in May

2014. Results include information on farm numbers, acreage, crops, livestock, income, expenses, and demographics at the

county, state, and national level. The wide-array of Census data are used by policy makers, universities, communities, and

organizations throughout Ohio and the United States to plan for the future and compete for valuable resources. We thank

Ohio’s producers for their cooperation and for providing the information which helps ensure the success of Ohio

agriculture.

The 2017 Census of Agriculture will be mailed out in December 2017 with an anticipated release date of 2019. We

encourage all of Ohio agriculture to be counted and respond to the 2017 Census of Agriculture.

Good decisions can only be made with good information. Our agency continually strives to meet our mission of providing

timely, accurate, and useful statistics in service to U.S. agriculture. Thanks again to all those who provided, collected, and

At the Ohio Department of Agriculture, administrators, scientists and field personnel work hard every day to protect the public,

ensure a safe and wholesome food supply and protect the health and well-being of the state’s plants and animals.

Every year in Ohio, nearly 12 million people depend on the department to uphold these statutory responsibilities given to us by the

Ohio General Assembly. In 2016, we continued to make great strides toward our goals.

From a water quality standpoint, we have made progress. The agriculture community continues to be at the forefront of taking the

necessary steps to maintain agriculture productivity, while protecting our natural resources and reducing nutrient runoff to improve

water quality in Lake Erie and surrounding waterways.

We also continue to educate thousands about precision farming through our Fertilizer Certification Program.

Through the recent addition of the Soil and Water Conservation Division to our agency, the Ohio Department of Agriculture now has

a connection to all farmers, in some way, in the state.

In addition to our ramped up efforts to address water quality, our diligent testing, surveillance and monitoring helps assure that the

milk you drink and the meat and other food you eat is safe and wholesome; your summer time amusement rides and water parks

are inspected for safety; consumers are getting what they pay for because of accurate weights and measures in the marketplace;

producers find new markets for their Ohio agricultural products; and historic farm heritage and productive farmland is being

preserved for the future of our state.

Ohio’s food and agriculture industry contributes $105 billion to the economy each year and provides jobs to one in seven people on

or off the farm. It is an honor to work on your behalf to protect the public and support this industry that provides so much to our

people and our state. I look forward to another productive and safe year.
