There are three types of Oki-brand beef. Oki Beef and Oki-Kuroiso Beef: born and raised in Oki.Shio-nagi Beef: born in Oki, then raised in the mountains of Oku-Izumo (mainland Shimane Prefecture).All three varieties graze on mineral-rich grass, producing great tasting, high-quality beef.

Chichi-sugi Japanese Cedar (Iwakura Shrine)
This is the site of one of the Kokubun-ji temples built around Japan in 741 and is an Important Property of Japan. Some believe that Emperor Godaigo was exiled here in 13 3 2 . A p o p u l a r t r a d i t i o n a l d a n c e Renge-emai is performed here on 21 April.

Rōsoku-jima (Candle Island)
“Ikkū” in local dialect means “the best ”. Enjoy cherry blossoms here in the spring. Monuments related to exiled of ficials and nobles are displayed within the shrine grounds.
Watch cat t le graze in the farmland around the mountaintop and enjoy Japanese radish (No-daikon) flowers in s p r i n g . Yo u c a n s e e a n a ma z i n g panorama across the Oki Islands and if you are lucky, as far as Mt. Daisen and Shimane Peninsula on the mainland.

This striking red-brown sea cliff is a great place to relax and admire t h e p o w e r o f n a t u r e . E n j o y watching the dramatic sunset from the clif f edge, or out at sea on a Sekiheki Cruise Boat. If you like exploring, you can hike here from Kurii Port (one way 1.5 ‒ 2 hrs).

Take a walk in the lush, green forest and discover two 40m waterfalls on either side of Dangyō Shrine located underneath the overhanging cliff. Here at this calm, spiritual place you can relax and enjoy nature.

Ushi-tsuki is said to have been introduced to the Oki Islands to please Emperor Gotoba, who was exiled here following the Jōkyū Rebellion in 1221. It is thought to be the oldest continuing bull sumō in Japan. Tradit ional Ushi-tsuki tournaments take place throughout the year.

This is the main shrine of the entire Oki I s l a n d s a n d f e a t u r e s i m p r e s s i v e b u i l d i n g s a n d a g i a n t c e d a r t r e e thought to be 2000 years old. Every year on 5 June a co lor fu l Ok i -s t y le festival known as Gorei-furyū is held.

in a single night by the legendary Yao Bikuni, a Buddhist Priestess, who lived for 800 years. The 20 traditional boat houses on the coast feature thatched cedar bark roofs.

The bright red volcanic rocks of this coast contrast beautifully against the blue sea. Look for a small heart shape in one of the rocks at the end of the trail!

This was once one of the highest ranked shr ines in Shimane (and Japan). I t is dedicated to the deity of fishing and is a popular spot for both locals and tourists. Squid come into the nearby harbor from autumn ‒ winter every year. Maybe you can catch a squid when you visit the shrine?
Yurahime Shrine
Historical documents state that Emperor Godaigo was exiled to Oki, with certain evidence pointing to this location. Walk around the site, visit the museum and learn about exile and history in Nishinoshima.
The wooden shrine building is the oldest in the Oki Islands (1732) and has been designated as an Impor tant Cul tural P r o p e r t y o f J a p a n . T h i s s h r i n e i s d e d i c a te d t o t h e d e i t y o f s a fe s ea voyages. Observe interesting flora and fauna along the track and enjoy views across the sea.
