The role of an Ambulance Community Officer (ACO)

with Ambulance Victoria in our local area…

The desire to assist your community can be achieved in many ways. Whether it be an association with a sporting club, a community service or arts group or as part of an emergency service, they all make our community so great.

Omeo resident Ronda Manhire had been an Ambulance Community Officer (ACO) for more than 30 years. ACOs provide a vital service for remote and rural communities and more volunteers are needed in the Omeo

and Tambo Valley (Ensay and Swifts Creek) region. “First responders, dispatched as a team of two in their team's ambulance, are simultaneously supported by a despatched full time paramedic. Depending on the location of the emergency or non-urgent incident, the first

responder’s may arrive before their respective paramedic back up does. This is because the local paramedic may not be available and the back-up can be from as far as Bairnsdale for example” Ronda said.

“Helping others in this way in their time of need is a most rewarding activity.” ACOs are provided with all training and while a medical background isn’t required, Ronda has seen many volunteers take up careers in health services

following their volunteer experience with Ambulance Victoria. “Some former team members of the Omeo Branch have used the acquired skills and created a career path to

becoming paramedics and nurses,” she said “Such was the impact on them when attending cases over the years.” First responders work across more than 100 locations in rural and remote Victoria, attending a variety of non-urgent

transport, emergency situations, including traffic accidents, respiratory and cardiac cases. “In Ambulance Victoria you become a team player, meet new people, have the opportunity to continue further

study, learn new skills, feel appreciated by patients and make lifelong friends,” Ronda said.

“My partner Graham and I certainly enjoyed our time with AV and I’d encourage you

to consider becoming an ACO.” .

Case response and training is remunerated, and you must hold a current Victorian driver’s licence.

Bushfire Recovery Victoria

Bushfire Recovery Victoria in partnership with East Gippsland Shire Council has commenced operating a service along the Great Alpine Road.

The service is available to any resident or business that has an issue in relation to the impact upon

them of the 2019 – 2020 bushfires – particularly where they are experiencing difficulties in

getting a resolution to the issue. While the service will primarily be based at the Shire Service Centre

in Omeo on Thursday afternoons and Friday mornings, access will be available to residents in other

communities along the Great Alpine Road during travel to and from Omeo

(from the Bushfire Recovery Victoria Hub at Sarsfield) on Thursday mornings and Friday afternoons.

The service is also available to undertake visits on-site where that will assist in enabling access.

Neil Smith (a Hub Coordinator at the Sarsfield Hub) will operate the service and encourages any resident

with an outstanding or problematic issue to contact him. The objective of this service is to make

every effort to assist residents and businesses resolve issues and find the support they require to

enable their recovery from the impact of the bushfires.

While appointments can be made (either directly with Neil or through the Omeo Service Centre)

they are not necessary – however a phone call to check before making a special trip is wise

as the service is not strictly office based but is also on site.
