HOME

‘Home’ is defined in many ways: the country where we were born, The county, province, city, or town, or family house with a big front lawn.

Those are physical definitions of places we feel ‘at home’,

it includes our current residence we return to after we roam.

‘Home’ is where our hearts are,

much more than a physical house, a place where we are known and loved

by family, friends and/or spouse.

We may feel ‘at home’ alone on a beach, or walking through our neighbourhood, or at a crowded event with friends. We’re ‘at home’ where we feel good.

No matter how grand or how humble

our physical home may be it’s where we feel safe and protected as winds of change blow wild and free.

Community Centre Newsletter November 2016

Message from the CEO: Let’s Talk Future...

The older I get, the quicker time seems to fly. I can hardly believe it’s been 3 years since the Board gave direction to begin planning for KinVillage’s long-term future and specifically to develop a Master Plan for our site. Although I’ve at various times provided updates, and during the last year encouraged folks to participate in the city’s similar long-term planning for our “neighbour”, Winskill Park, I wanted to remind you of a couple of things and then invite you to join our conversation about the future of KinVillage.

The reminders • Our Board has made no decisions regarding the future of the KinVillage site, including our Community

Centre and various housing and health programs. As good stewards of KinVillage, it does need to think about the future so we will be positioned to, over time, replace aging buildings, respond to changing community needs, and ensure we have the resources to do both.

• A Master Plan is a guiding document for the future of a site, such as KinVillage. It is based on developing an understanding of how a site would best continue to serve the community in future and includes a conceptual design of a future site, along with a plan for how changes could be made, often over many (e.g. 20+) years.

The invitation

Now that the municipality has completed its consultation about Winskill Park, we’d like to invite those closest to KinVillage – our residents, clients and family members, our staff and volunteers, our community centre, ElderCollege Delta and Society members to hear the Board’s and management’s initial thoughts on how KinVillage’s site may evolve in the years ahead. More importantly, we want to hear from you! So you are invited to join us, our consultants and our architect to talk about some initial ideas. Please drop by the Community Centre on:

Monday November 14th OR Thursday November 24th Between 1:30 and 4:00 pm

We hope to see you there. (If you’re not able to make either of the above sessions, we will be hosting an information session for the General Public in the Community Centre also on Thursday November 24th, between 4:00 and 7:30 pm.)

November 8th - Jungle Book A reimagining of the classic collection of stories by Rudyard Kipling. After a threat from the tiger Shere Khan forces him to flee the jungle, a man-cub named Mowgli embarks on a journey

of self discovery with the help of panther, Bagheera, and free spirited bear, Baloo. Editor’s note: I have seen this movie and it is amazing.

November 22nd - JOY - Biopic of entrepreneur Joy Mangano, a divorced mother of two who risks her life's savings to produce and market her invention, the Miracle Mop. The success of that product leads to a home-shopping empire

and her ascension to matriarch of her family. Editor’s note: While not a five out of five, this is a pretty good movie. Good performance by main star, Jennifer Lawrence, as Joy.

OCTOBER EVENTS

FUN FOR ALL - FRIDAY, OCTOBER 21ST We were delighted to see Bernice Wand and her friends from the Wexford at our luncheon. Bernice was one of the three winners in the share the wealth draw. Thanks to the generous purchase of tickets, we were able to award prizes of 35, 30, and 30 and give KinVillage 95.00 as well.

For 15 years, volunteer Doreen Weatherby has made it possible for children and adults alike to enjoy Witches at the Mall. Doreen recruited 9 more volunteers to join her this year. Sincere thanks to everyone. Thank you also to Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall for their contribution to KinVillage.

Infomaniacs Strike Again At Qui Night

The Infomaniacs team from Tsawwassen Library swept the board for the third time running in winning the KinVillage Quiz Night. Fourteen teams competed for the top prize but the Infomaniacs won through. Scoring an impressive 82 points out of 110, they made it a hat trick of wins. Everybody had a good and enjoyable time and are looking forward to the next installment, hopefully with a different winner.

WITCHES AT THE MALL Can you identify who’s who? Joanne, Hazel, Flo, Bev, Barbara, Vi, Mary, Joan R, Joan T. and Doreen
