Across the Nation...Across the Nation...

President Benigno S. Aquino III called on the whole nation’s col-lective actions in pursuing the ideals of his late father, Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr., as he led in the commemoration of the latter’s martyrdom that restored the peace and democracy

to the nation 28 years ago.

President Aquino leads commemoration of his father former Sen. Ninoy Aquino’s martyrdom

In his speech during the Opening Ceremonies of “Ninoy, My Hero” Interactive exhibit at The Atrium, SM Megamall in Pasig City on Sunday, the President issued the call as he encouraged everyone to take part in ef-forts to respond to the chal-lenges of maintaining the democracy and fight against corruption.

The Chief Executive noted the importance of co-operation in traversing the righteous path towards the country’s progress and de-velopment. “Mas marami na po tayo ngayon, mas malaya na nating magagawa ang kanilang ginagawa noong araw kaya ngayon din kai-langan mangako na tayo sa susunod na salinlahi…tata-pusin na natin itong laban na ito,” the President said. “Kailangan naman po siguro na masabi natin na hindi sayang ang mga sakripisyo ninyo,” he added. Then opposition lead-er Ninoy was shot to death at the tarmac of the Manila International Airport, which was now named after him, following his return from the United States to lead the na-tion’s struggle for freedom. Such act of martyrdom

urged the Filipinos to launch a bloodless revolution that ousted then President Mar-cos catapulted his widow, Corazon C. Aquino as the 11th President of the coun-try in February of the year 1986. The photo exhibit seeks to keep Ninoy’s ideals alive and hopes to inspire the younger generation of heroes who will likewise strive for a Philippines filled with dignity and promise. The exhibit features some of the most memora-ble photographs as well as illustrations of Ninoy high-lighting the diverse aspects of his meaningful life. It will also illustrate a vibrant por-trait of Filipino heroism; the sacrifices heroism entails and explains its importance to date in the nation’s his-tory. Also present during the event include House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr., Sena-tor Serge Osmena and cabi-

The Aquino administration mourns the deaths of National Artist Edith Tiempo and renowned fictionist and essayist Kerima Polo-tan Tuvera.

Aquino extends condolences to families of Tiempo and Polotan-Tuvera

“It is a sad weekend for the Philip-pine literary community as two of its most eminent elders, National Artist for Litera-ture Edith L. Tiempo and renowned fictionist and essayist Kerima Polotan Tuvera, passed away within a day of each other,” Presiden-tial Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said in a statement. Tiempo died on Sunday while Tuvera passed away last Friday. Lacierda said the Aquino administra-tion is “united in grief with a country that mourns their passing.” “Many of the country’s established literary practitioners, as well as its most promising young talents, trace their lineage from the Silliman National Writers Work-shop which Mrs. Tiempo established with her late husband. Among those who served as a pillar of the workshop was Mrs. Polotan Tuvera, whose own body of work has been widely recognized as crucial to the devel-opment of Philippine Literary Fiction written from English,” Lacierda said. “Both stalwarts have influenced gen-erations of writers through their mentor-ing and through their own works, inspiring countless to tread the same path. We are certain that coming generations of Filipinos

will likewise find a timeless vibrancy in the wealth that they contributed to our culture, our collective memory, and our nation’s sto-ry,” he added. Tiempo was born in Bayombong, Nue-va Vizcaya on April 22, 1919. Together with her late husband, writer and critic Edilberto K. Tiempo, they founded (in 1962) and di-rected the Silliman National Writers Work-shop in Dumaguete City, which has pro-duced some of the country’s best writers. She was conferred the National Artist Award for Literature in 1999. She died at the age of 92 on August 21 in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental. Among her novels were A Blade of Fern (1978), His Native Coast (1979), The Alien Corn (1992), One, Tilting Leaves (1995) and The Builder (2003). She wrote a short fiction, Abide, Joshua, and Other Stories (1964) and poetries, The Tracks of Baby-lon and Other Poems (1966), The Charmer’s Box (1992), Beyond, Extensions (1993) and Marginal Annotations (2001). Tuvera, former editor in chief of Focus Philippines magazine and the Evening Post newspaper, died at the age of 85. She won four first prizes at the Palan-ca awards, and also garnered prizes in the

Malacañang cites quick response of Cost Guard and concerned groups in rescue of Fastcraft

Malacañang cited on Monday the Philippine Coast Guard and concerned groups for their “immediate response” in rescuing the crew and passen-gers of the M/V Island Ferry Fastcraft I which sank near the port of Cebu

on Sunday (August 21) due to faulty electrical wiring in its engine room. In a statement, Malacañang said that the quick actions of the PCG and commercial vessel M/V Seajet which was pass-ing by “rescued majority of the manifested 75 people on board.” “We recognize that more lives could have been lost were it not for the search and rescue team’s valiant efforts, the invaluable assis-tance extended by the pass-ing passenger vessel, and the heroism of our fisherfolk who were among those first at the scene,” Deputy Presi-dential Spokesperson Abigail

Valte said. Valte also cited Trans-portation and Communica-tion Secretary Mar Roxas for immediately forming a crisis team that oversaw the res-cue operations of the crew and passengers of the ill-fated ship. As of this writing, Rox-as had ordered the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) to ground, effective immedi-ately, all vessels being oper-ated by Island Express Ship-ping, owner and operator of the sunken ship. The DOTC chief said the directive was meant to

ensure that all vessels oper-ated by Island Express Ship-ping are seaworthy. Roxas also instructed the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) to convene the Board of Marine Inquiry (BMI) and to subject the owners and operators of Island Express Shipping to a thorough inves-tigation to determine wheth-er the shipping company or its crew was at fault. Island Express Ship-ping has six vessels: one fastcraft and five RoRo ves-sels serving Hagnaya-Sta. Fe and Cebu-Tubigon routes.

Malacañang says... from page 5 “We recognize the grief that continues to burden the relatives of the victims and we remain committed to re-forms and improvements that will move relations be-tween our peoples forward,” Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said in his statement on the eve of the the Quirino Grandstand hos-tage-taking incident. Lacierda said that con-cerned private citizens have also established a Solidar-ity Fund for the families of

the victims, in keeping with the deep solidarity Filipinos feel for the victims and their families. “The Philippines has undertaken the investiga-tions into official culpability: resulting in a dismissal and the filing of administrative charges against four police officials,” he said. Lacierda said the Aquino administration has improved the capability and equipment of the Special Ac-tion Force (SAF) and estab-

lished a Tourism Police to en-sure the safety of visitors. “Officials of the gov-ernment will be meeting with some of the families of the victims and with a Hong Kong legislator to share up-dates on progress in the year since the tragedy took place,” Lacierda said. The survivors and rel-atives of the slain hostage victims arrived on Sunday from Hong Kong to seek jus-tice and support from the Philippine government.

Malacañang assures families of Filipinos in Libya of government’s efforts to ensure safety of relatives

Malacañang assured the families of Filipinos in Libya that the govern-ment has been exerting all the necessary efforts to ensure the safety of their relatives there and eventually bring them home.

In a press briefing at the Palace on Monday, Presidential Deputy Spokesperson Abigail Valte said that President Benigno S. Aquino III has directed all concerned gov-ernment agencies to assess the situation of Filipinos in Libya and to ensure that not a single Filipino will be harmed in the height-ened violence there. “On the situation in Libya, the Presi-dent has given additional instructions to validate the situation and to see what else can be done to help the Filipinos who want to be repatriated,” Valte said. For the time being, Valte said, there are 86 Filipinos who have already manifest-ed their desire to be repatriated. Heeding to the directives of Presi-dent Aquino through DFA Secretary Albert del Rosario, Valte added that Foreign Affairs Undesecretary Rafael Seguis is currently in Libya to assess the needs of the Filipinos in the area.

The International Organization for Mi-gration (IOM) has advised the officials of the Philippine Embassy in Libya to remain indoors due to the extreme danger caused by violence in the streets. “We have been advised by the IOM that our people in the embassy must remain in the embassy due to violence in the streets. We have been advised that it is highly and extremely unsafe for our people in the em-bassy to go out now and check the situation of our fellow Filipinos,” Valte said. Valte assured that the government is constantly monitoring the situation in Libya to ensure the safety of the Filipinos there. “The President has asked for the con-tinuous update on the situation in Libya, so he asked the concerned officials to con-stantly keep him abreast of the develop-ments there,” Valte said. An estimated 2,000 Filipinos are still in Libya with about 1,200 in Tripoli and the

Government estimate reveals that there were about 26,000 Filipinos in Lib-ya at the start of the fighting six months ago, but most of them left soon after the un-rest began. Meanwhile, Valte ad-vised the Filipinos in Syria, which is also jolted by esca-lating violence due to civil unrest, to coordinate with the Philippine Embassy offi-

cials there so that necessary assistance may be extended to them. “Sa mga kababayan po natin na nasa Syria, the embassy is there and the DFA Quick Response Team arrived there over the week-end and were deployed as quickly as possible. As for those who need help they can contact the embassy for assistance,” Valte said. She added that the

government has already is-sued an appeal for the Filipi-nos in Syria urging them to leave the country to ensure their safety. There were an esti-mated 17 thousand Filipinos in Syria. Since mid-March, anti-government protesters have taken to the streets across the whole country of Syria to demand reforms.

Kadayawan 2011, a smashing successby Rudolph Ian G. AlamaDAVAO CITY, Aug. 22 (PIA) – “An ultra-mega success.” So says Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte describing the recently concluded Kadayawan thanksgiving festival held last weekend (August 19-20).

“The crowd turn-out was bigger this year, the weather cooperated and there was zero terror in-cident,” the Mayor said of the factors for the success of the festival which is held in the month of August. According to figures from the Davao City Po-lice Office, crowd turn-out was estimated at around 50,000 people for the in-dak-indak (street dancing) event and 70,000 for the Pamulak sa Kadayawan (floral float parade). The past 2010 Kadayawan es-timated 30,000 heads for Indak-indak and 50,000 for the floral float parade. The Mayor said she gave a grade of 8 to the event which was organized by a private sector organi-zation, the Duaw Founda-tion.

Mayor Duterte said that one can see the differ-ence between past events organized by the City Gov-ernment and the current Kadayawan particularly in setting the mood and the over-all participation of the people. She however said that there could be room for improvements par-ticularly in crowd control near the performance ar-eas, the provision of areas where floral floats could be displayed and be seen by the people and more bleachers which could be used by spectators for better vantage point. Duterte is thankful that the event went on smoothly, she recounts several issues which had hounded the festival thanks in part to voracious

critics whom she called as “negastars”. Among these controversies include the new Kadayawan logo which many derided as lifeless and dull, the green col-ored theme of the festival and the fees for photogra-pher’s among others. She said that all this are lessons which could be studied for future Ka-dayawan festivals. Kadayawan festival with its indigenous origins is a festival of thanksgiv-ing to the supreme be-ing Manama for abundant harvests, It is a much-an-ticipated annual event in Davao City whose grandi-ose festivities have earned its moniker as the Festival of Festival or the King of Festivals. City Mayor... from page 8 ... The Davao Punch is the name of a drink concocted by a chef from a Davao-based culinary school. A non-alco-holic drink which combines pomelo, calamansi and gua-va; its recipe and name are trademarked for use by the City of Davao. It is also a clever ref-erence to the July 1 incident where the lady City Mayor punched a Court Sheriff after disobeying her orders to de-lay the demolition of several shanties. Mayor Duterte’s punches caught on video be-came an instant viral hit in the internet. “We have given the recipes to restaurants and

bars but that recipe is re-served they cannot develop that into another drink.” Du-terte said. If they will add alcohol in the punch then they have to rename it. They could not use the name. The drink is targeted to be a trademark drink of the City similar to the Singa-pore Sling of Singapore. She said the City is exploring the tie-up with the Department of Science and Technology particularly in bottling the drink which then can be marketed. “They said it is difficult to bottle the punch, that is why we are partnering with

the DOST for the packag-ing.” According to the May-or, once bottling is perfected and developed the manufac-turing of the bottled punch will be given to the city’s women sector as a livelihood program. Meanwhile, Mayor Du-terte said the continuance of the welcome drink booth at the Davao Internation-al Airport, where visitors are served with free Davao Punches is subject to the availability of funds coming from the City Tourism Oper-ations Office. DOST XI introduces Strawberry Production Technology to Marilog Farmers

The Department of Sci-ence and Technology Regional Office No. XI (DOST XI) brought two (2) experts on strawberry production technologies from La Trinidad, Benguet to New Calinan, Baganihan, Marilog District, Davao City. he experts, namely, Mr. Sergio Gayao and Mr. Peter Bu-langen, conducted a short lec-ture on strawberry production technologies, which includes different varieties and differ-ent characteristics of the crop.

The experts and the farmer-members of Baganihan Agri-Eco Ventures Cooperative had a three-day encounter discuss-ing the major requirements for a successful production of strawberries. The experts brought sample-planting materials of Sweet Charlie and Festival Va-rieties and ended the training with a short demonstration on how to plant the strawberry runners (strawberry seeds) and take care of it.

The farm demonstra-tion area was divided into two farms: one farm was devoted to farmer’s practice in Marilog; while, the other farm was dedi-cated to the production system from Benguet. The farmer-members of Baganihan Agri-Eco Ventures Cooperative were grateful of the knowledge and skill they have gained during the said training. The members vowed to start and ensure the success of the project.

There were also inputs on pest and disease control, which is the number one prob-lem of the Baganihan farmers. With the said training, they already understood the sea-sonality of strawberry pro-duction, the peak and low season.

The experts will re-turn to check the prog-ress of the strawberry farm demo in September 2011. The experts will also further teach Baganihan farmers on production of runners, pest control and fertilization pro-gram for fruit production

and runner production. So, the next time you visit the supermarket, you will be proud to see that the strawberries on the shelves are actually home-grown from Marilog, Davao City. (DOST-XI)

He asked them to work for the elusive peace in the countryside, side by side with development as he received two checks worth P14,216,000 from the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace Process (OPAPP). The amount will be used to finance various projects ranging from infra repairs to livelihood in their respective municipalities. According to OPAPP Assistant Secretary Howard Cafugauan, although the ini-tial implementation of the project will be undertaken by the provincial govern-

ment thru the provincial en-gineering office, consequent projects will be undertaken by the recipient municipali-ties with the provincial gov-ernment as monitoring and evaluation authority. “For the mayors, you should not thank me that the project is finally here... You should thank the mem-bers of the technical working group who put their hands together in order that these initial projects will be imple-mented immediately; and the OPAPP, for believing in our sincerity (to achieve)...lasting peace and develop-

ment in our province,” Gov. Plaza said. The said amount is part of the P18 million in-tended for the rehabilitation of farm-to-market roads in San Francisco, Bayugan and Prosperidad, rehabilitation of Andanan Baily bridge in Sibagat, livelihood projects like rubber-based farm-ing (rubber plus banana plus fruit tress), abaca pro-duction, cacao production, handicraft production, and of the water supply system, particularly in Sibagat town. SURIGAO DEL NORTE, August 22 (PIA) - Another vicious act was recently committed by the Communist Terrorist CPP-NPA-NDF (CNN) last August 20, 2011 when they torched down the unfinished detachment of the 30th Infan-try Battalion located in Brgy. Bunyasan, Malimono this province.

A report from 30IB’s Civil Military Officer Capt. Tony Bugawan revealed that it was around 7:40 pm, Sat-urday when the incident happened. about 15minutes. Bugawan said no casualty was report-ed in the government side while undetermined number on the enemy side. Meantime, residents of Malimono praised the heroic act of the Philippine Army force. TThey also vowed to support to the government forces in suppressing the rebel group in the area. Earlier, panic also reigned in the residents of the neighboring municipal-ity of San Francisco as they

received NPA threats spread over text messages such as bombing explosion, assault and kidnapping of San Fran-cicso Mayor Simplicia Bacol. With these, classes were suspended on that day. ISABELA CITY, Basilan, Aug 21 (PIA) – Two top women executives in the Au-tonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao have declared that initial reforms need-ed were already instituted in their respective offices during their brief stint un-der the administration of outgoing ARMM Acting Governor Ansaruddin Adiong.

ARMM’s DOLE, REZA execs laud Adiong’s legacy of in-stituted reforms

The Bureau of Public Information reveals, in a press release, that at least two key ARMM Cabinet members took pride of the 18-month Adiong regime and their respective leader-ships, in general, and that they will bow out of office with good legacy. ARMM’s Labor and Employment Secretary Myra Alih and Regional Economic Zone Authority (REZA) Executive Director Rosslaini Sinarimbo both affirmed that the “greatest asset” of their regime is its “convergence” of efforts in administrative and opera-tional functions under the principle of “consultation, transparency and moral governance.” “We are now ready to vacate our office honor-ably,” Alih said, adding that concrete reforms had been taking place long before proponents for appoint-ment of officers-in-charge (OICs) began to espouse such. Malacañang-appoint-ed OICs are set to assume the ARMM reins after Sept. 30. “We are hopeful that

those who will replace us will have the same pas-sion for our people in the ARMM,” Alih told the week-ly Tapatan sa ARMM media forum here Wednesday. For her part, Sinarim-bo said they have widened ARMM’s horizon of econom-ic opportunities through the reactivation of the REZA, which was created in 2002 but rendered operational only in 2010, citing their fruitful trade missions to Malaysia and revival of links with the Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East Asian Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA). “During the early part of ARG Adiong’s assumption of office, we had observed that ARMM had strength-ened back its social services but its economic activities are still significantly weak,” Sinarimbo said. She said that while the regional government worked hard to address the problems of regaining the trust of all stakehold-ers and the early recovery of IDPs, she and her team also embarked on laying down the ground-works for

the effective functioning of the REZA. “With our trade mis-sions to Malaysia, our lo-cal fruit and flour produc-ers have got substantial increase in product orders abroad,” Sinarimbo, saying that coffee products have also gained a lucrative market outlet in Malaysia through their trade mis-sions. In their remaining days in office, Sinarimbo said the Adiong administra-tion has lined up vital busi-ness forums for seaweed, rubber, oil palm and coco-nut products to possible participation of investors outside ARMM. She expressed hope their “successors will con-tinue the structures already started like the Polloc Free-port and its facilities or else it will become another white elephant,” she added. On labor and employ-ment concerns, Alih said, the DOLE-ARMM under her watch had earned recogni-tion from counterpart offic-es and in concerned institu-tions. Alih said the recent

Jolo flood victims to receive DOLE-ARMM’s livelihood kitISABELA CITY, Basilan, Aug 21 (PIA) – Two top women executives in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao have declared that initial reforms needed were already instituted in their re-spective offices during their brief stint under the administration of outgoing ARMM Acting Governor Ansaruddin Adiong. In a press release, Jo Henry of BPI said that res-idents who suffered most in the flood that destroyed several houses and devas-tated the town’s economy last February will receive livelihood assistance from DOLE-ARMM. DOLE-ARMM Secre-tary Myra Alih announced this “good news” at the weekly Tapatan sa ARMM media forum in Cotabato City on Wednesday, de-scribing it as a fruit of the representations to national government of regional of-ficials led by Acting ARMM Governor Ansaruddin Adi-ong. Alih said her agency had received funds from the national government for the purchase of 50 to

100 packages of starter kits consisting appliances and electronic devices re-quested by selected flood victims themselves for their small-scale livelihood enterprises. She did not reveal the cost of each starter kit, saying only that it is simi-lar to assistance package received by most of some 800 workers displaced by the self-imposed closure of a ferment firm in Magu-indanao. Alih said the adverse-ly flood-affected residents here had asked for sewing machines, mini food pro-cessing devices, freezers and other light equipment needed in their business enterprises to reel off from economic displacement.

Meanwhile, Alih said her agency sponsored one night of the ongoing Ra-madhan Fair on Aug. 15 in Cotabato City to distribute similar starter kits to the displaced workers of the ferment factory in Magu-indanao, which closed up in 2009 after its American buyer stopped importing due to the prevailing eco-nomic slowdown in the United States. The “Pangkabuhayan Showcase” night started with a cultural presenta-tion featuring all-male Moro musical instrumen-tal renditions using gongs and kulintang witnessed by hundreds of spectators including recipients of the starter kits. missions in Malay-sia had opened up job opportunities for 40,000 oil palm plantation workers with salaries ranging from 3,500 to 4,000 Ringgits (equiva-lent of P50,000) a

month. She said the Malaysian govern-ment reactivated its “amnesty program” for illegal migrants that would benefit hundreds of undoc-umented Filipinos

staying or working in Malaysia. “Malays ians prefer workers from the ARMM because they have almost the same culture and food with Ma-laysians while oth-

ers also know how to speak the Bahasa language,” she said. (MD-BPIARMM/RVC-PI9 BaSul-Ta)

DIPOLOG CITY, Aug. 22 (PIA) - Eleven nurses and midwives have recently complet-ed a three-day training on interpersonal communication and counseling conduct-ed by the Zamboanga del Norte Provincial Health Office (PHO) in cooperation with the United State Agency for International Development (USAID) through the Gerry Roxas Foundation and Health Pro.

Dr. Teresita Damas-co, Provincial Health Offi-cer, said dengue is every-one’s concern and should do their share in cleanli-ness, since this is still the best weapon to fight the dreadful disease. In the latest report to Governor Alex Calin-gasan, PHO surveillance data shows there were only 275 cases from Janu-ary until now, compared to 1,505 cases in the same months of 2010, hence a drop rate of more than 80 percent. Despite this, Damas-co urged the people of Bukidnon to be more alert as dengue peaks during August to September, the perfect time it hits vulner-able areas. “Dengue is a man-made problem because mosquitoes that carry dengue need our contain-ers, refrigerators, old tires, empty bottles and cans, drains, and solid wastes as ideal breeding sites,”

she said in a simultaneous radio broadcast aired over ten (10) AM and FM radio stations here. Dr. Josephine Ibalio, dengue control service co-ordinator of the DOH, like-wise, has detailed again the 4S campaign, which are: Search and destroy mosquito breeding places; Self-protection through use of mosquito nets and wearing of long sleeve shirts and pants; Seek early consultation and treatment if symptoms persist; and Say no to in-discriminate fogging. Since mosquitoes breed near houses, says Dr. Ibalio, any intervention must begin at the house-hold level, to eliminate larvae and eggs so they won’t produce adults that can transmit the disease. With these preven-tive activities, the DOH and PHO join forces to cre-ate as much awareness as possible among the chil-

dren, their families and the community.“But shifting ‘ownership’ of dengue control from government to the people pose a serious challenge because people still think it’s the government’s busi-ness,” Dr. Ibalio said. “The message is that it’s not the government’s or local agencies’ sole re-sponsibility; we all have to pitch in because, in the long run, it’s our own health we’re promoting,” she explained.Meanwhile, Damasco ap-plauds the DOH for laying-out so clearly what the local government’s Rural Health Units (RHUs) must do: Promote coordina-tion, stimulate environ-mental actions, provide quality care for dengue patients, standardized re-porting, and prepare for outbreaks. (PIA 10)

“Although the leg-islation has not yet been passed and the imple-menting rules and regula-tions are still in the draw-ing board, the signs are that K+12 will happen and that it will be another proj-ect for the goal of Stron-ger Formation of XU,” Fr. Yap said during his inves-titure, last Aug. 15, at the Immaculate Conception Chapel of XU.

The 10th President of XU, he succeeds Fr. Jose Ra-mon T. Villarin, SJ, who assumed post as President of Ateneo de Manila Uni-versity (ADMU), recently. He said “XU needs to start to prepare for what will, most likely, be a ma-jor overhaul not only of Philippine basic education but tertiary education, as well.” He said the plan, so far, is

to have two (2) additional years of what will be con-sidered Senior High School that will be composed of two tracks: A career-bound track at the end of which the graduate joins the work force and a college-bound track whose graduate moves on to tertiary stud-ies.

“As an economist, I am in favor of a basic prin-ciple guiding the design of these tracks. The supply of competencies must match the demand,” said Fr. Yap, who has a PhD in Economics from the University College London, in 2002. He also has a Masters in Economics from the New School for Social Research, New York, USA in 1988 and an AB in Economics, from the Honors Program, graduating Cum Laude, from ADMU in 1980. His other degrees in-clude a Master in Public Pol-icy from Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA, in 1995 and an MA in Theology, Bachelor in Sa-cred Theology, graduating Summa Cum Laude from the Loyola School of Theology, ADMU, in 1992. Meanwhile, Fr. Yap said the competencies that XU supplies must match the demand of the private sec-tor, civil society, government and civil service in Northern Mindanao, the Philippines

and the ASEAN region. These extra two (2) years will not only mean that our XU High School will have to offer two more years of pre-university college-bound training. It will, likewise, im-ply that XU will have to of-fer programs for the career-bound track. “We will strengthen and align the technical and vocational courses offered by our Center for Integrated Technologies (CIT). All our colleges, i.e., engineering, agriculture, nursing, com-puter studies, education, arts and sciences, business and management, may have to offer 2-year ladderized programs on the career-bound track for their respec-tive fields,” he said. Further, he said, K+12 will also mean revisions of the tertiary General Educa-tion Curriculum that will be offered after Senior High School. And the courses that will be offered at the ju-nior and senior years of the tertiary level will also have to be upgraded so these be-

come more research-orient-ed. When the laws are en-acted and the rules and reg-ulations are promulgated, XU will rise to the challenge of K+12 and will avail cre-atively of the opportunities it offers for making education better. He also said XU needs to develop a more profes-sional organization saying “Our student population has grown from 14,000 in 2002 to 16,000, today. Our un-dergraduate tertiary level population is the biggest among the Ateneos with the most number of schools and colleges.” “And no matter at what level, whether career- or college- bound or ladder-ized or upgraded university programs, Ateneo de Ca-gayan will make sure that all are marked by the charac-teristics of Jesuit education, ‘en todo amar y servir,’ in all things to love and serve the Lord,” Fr. Yap added. (XU/PIA-10)
