Letter From The Director

FAM Members

Happy Spring! FAM is in the midst of several exciting programs and initatives that have gained momentum in the last year. City Centre Freeport and Collaborate Freeport are two examples of collaborative community efforts tied to revitalization of Freeport. City Centre is focused on revitalization of the downtown while Collaborate Freeport is a marketing and rebranding effort that has been successful in creating a new brand--Freeport-All In. Both are working together to create a vibrant, forward-looking community that celebrates its unique history. One of the ways FAM is involved in revitalization is through plans to create an Arts District downtown (see page 12). Also, the museum staff are contributing time, knowledge and resources towards creative placemaking techniques that will provide more arts and culture opportunities for both residents and visitors. If you wish to support the Freeport Art Museum’s planned Arts Plaza or would like to become more involved, I encourage you to contact me or reach out to any of the steering committee members of City Centre or Collaborate Freeport.

Additions to the Collection

Memorial Gifts & BequestsNicole and Brian Green - $50 in memory of Charles M. Rudolph

Genevieve Borchers Trust - $1,000 Ann E. Ludgwitz Trust - $5,000

FAM has been the recipient of several new acquisitions to the collection in 2016. Parkview donated three paintings by local artists: Florence Furst, Roger F. Hill, and Kenneth Fissel. A silver gelatin photograph titled From the Backbone by Michael Johnson, was graciously donated by Jim and Mary Lee and a photograph that was recently featured in FAM’s The Nature of Masculinity exhibition was donated by the artist Antonio Martinez. The museum was also honored to receive a color lithograph print titled A San Lazzaro by famous artist Alexander Calder, which was bequeathed by the estate of Patricia Herbert. Thanks to a State Bank Foundation Grant, the museum was able to purchase much needed archival supplies to properly care for these and other items within the museum’s collections storage.

Community Arts Access Grant awardsCommunity Arts Access, a long-standing re-granting program made possible by funds from the Illinois Arts Council Agency (IACA)and the Freeport Art Museum is at risk of being cancelled due to the state budget impasse. For over 15 years, the CAA program has helped facilitate the creation of countless important arts presentations, exhibitions and activities throughout rural Illinois. This year, the Freeport Art Museum was awarded $4,365 through the IACA to which the museum adds a 25% match. However, due to the lack of budget and uncertain future for arts funding nationwide--the IACA was forced to issue partial checks. FAM received $3,275 and matched this with an additional $819 for a total of $4,094. Four organizations and individuals were awarded funding in early February including Jamie Davidson for a series of dance and cultural programming for kids (see page 11), Galena Center for the Arts for an Heirloom Art Exhibit, Mt. Carroll District Library for a Poetry Slam series and Freeport Downtown Development Foundation to help pay artists involved in their Pretzel City Market coming to the area this summer.

Aspiring Artists

FabricationExhibiting Artists: Les Allen, Rosalie Koldan, and Paul NitscheMay 12 - July 8, 2017Opening Reception: Friday, May 12th from 5-7 pm

Student ExhibitionMarch 3 - April 29, 2017

The artists whose work is featured in Fabrication, use an array of objects to assemble and fabricate imagined and unexpected scenes. Initially, the combinations of elements within the pieces might appear contradictory or even illogical, thereby challenging the viewer to make sense of the unfamiliar, by placing themselves within the scenes. The results are surreal-like compositions that pull at the viewers unconscious.

Les Allen’s series of fantastical, surreal photographs, created in his studio and printed in a traditional wet darkroom, are construct set-ups which may look digitally manipulated, but are not. Every detail in his work is done by hand. Rosalie Koldan’s pieces are assemblage sculptures, which she defines as “a work of art made by linking together objects not intended as art materials and establishing a symbolic meaning.” Paul Nitsche builds each element of his artwork by hand, and his carved and veneered shadowboxes, bronze and limestone sculpture, and mechanical paper doll automata, implement the craft and aesthetics of Victoriana and the Romantic Age of Science.

Celebrate the artistic talent of K-12 students from Freeport and surrounding communities at the annual Aspiring Artists art exhibition. This year, 483 pieces were selected by art teachers representing 16 schools in from Freeport and surrounding areas. Chris Wallace, Principal at Pearl City Elementary School served as this year’s juror and FSD 145 Superintendent, Mike Schiffman presented awards of distinction for each age group (K-5, 6-8 and 9-12).

Fabrication

Small Town, Big HeroesPhotographs by Amy Dreibelbis Fairweather ofD+F Photography & DesignJanuary 27 - April 1, 2017

This exhibition displays photos, by Amy Dreibelbis Fairweather, of 12 unsung heroes in Northwest Illinois. United Way of Northwest Illinois initiated this project with a mission to unearth and celebrate people in our community that, make a substantial difference in the lives and organizations they touch. It wasn’t necessarily about the known leaders, Earth shakers or the outspoken ones, but rather a quest for those heroes who do what they do and seldom ask for anything in return.

Found In TranslationJudy Bales, Suanna Breed, Ananda Kesler, and Joanie McGinnisSeptember 15 - November 4, 2017Opening Reception Friday, September 15th from 5-7 pm

Found in Translation features the work of four Iowa artists who create art suggestive of the natural environment without literally depicting it. The exhibition title alludes to the translation of artistic media into new and surprising expressions. For each artist, the proclivity for introspection and a focus on spiritual growth has been inextricably interwoven with her art. This emphasis on spirituality is a strong unifying element and when shown collectively, the exhibition evokes a sense of mystery. In the same way that jazz music brings depth and richness to human experience without narrative, these abstract works inspire the viewer to connect with their own rich inner life and to walk away feeling moved and uplifted.

Wish You Were Here

In today’s world of ever-changing technology and social media, the art of postcard and letter writing has largely gone by the wayside. This exhibition salutes the postcard as a throwback to the days when picking out a postcard was part of the excitement of the journey. Today, sharing travel images is as easy as making a few clicks on a smartphone. MAG artists have creatively interpreted the postcard as a nostalgic form of communication. The exhibition title refers to one of the most common phrases written on the backs of postcards and also alludes to a simpler, less technologically overwhelming era.

These miniatures, measuring no more than six inches square, are generously donated to the museum for a silent auction event that raises funds to support the Freeport Art Museum. FAM is a private, not-for-profit 501(c)3 organization that receives no direct tax support; proceeds from this event will directly contribute to FAM’s mission and ensure the future of the arts and art education in our community. Works will remain on display through September 1st. Artists who would like to participate please RSVP by June 1st and review the Participating Artists Guidelines at www.freeportartmuseum.com/mini.

smArt After School is an exciting new collaboration with the Boys & Girls Club in Freeport that integrates arts into the after school program onsite at the club. Funded by a grant from the Freeport Community Foundation, this program reaches youth who typically do not have regular access to the art museum and often come from economic backgrounds that create barriers to cultural activities. smArt After School employs a multi-disciplinary approach that utilizes both visual and performing arts and is presented by art, dance and theater professionals from the region. An exhibition of work created during the program will be on display in the FAM student gallery beginning on March 29th. Join us for the opening reception from 5:00-6:30 p.m.

4th Biennial Mini Masterpieces

DEIXA FALAR ARTS & CULTURE WORKSHOPS FOR KIDSSAMBA REGGAE BRAZILIAN CARNAVAL WORKSHOP Tuesday–Thursday, March 7, 8, & 9 | 4:15-5:30pmSamba-reggae is a hybrid music and dance genre born out of the black pride

movement of the 1970s in Salvador, Bahia. Participants learn to samba dance

and craft their own abadá (carnaval bloco shirt).

FESTA DE YEMANJÁ: CELEBRATING OCEAN SPIRITS Tuesday–Thursday, April 4, 5, 6 | 4:15-5:30pmIn Brazil, the popular spirit of the sea is called Yemanjá. She is a Yoruba orixá carried to Brazil

from West Africa (Nigeria, Togo, and Benin) during the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Yemanjá is

celebrated on New Year’s in Rio and on February 2 in Bahia with massive public festivals at

the water’s edge. Workshop participants make their own agogô (percussion instrument) and

learn to play the Ijexá rhythm. Choreographic elements of Yemanjá’s dances will be taught.

BUMBA MEU BOI/THE ENCHANTED OX: A BRAZILIAN FOLK TRADITION Tuesday–Thursday, May 2, 3, 4 | 4:15 – 5:30pmBumba meu Boi is a folk tradition celebrated in northeastern Brazil during the Festas

Juninhas. Each year, this story of an enchanted ox is re-enacted by exuberant throngs

of costumed dancers, amid music and songs composed especially for the occasion.

Having originated in northeastern Brazil, between the Amazon and the arid catinga,

where workers of African descent mingled with Indigenous persons and myths under

a Portuguese and largely Catholic authority, the drama celebrates the heroic figure

of the Indian in Brazilian history and highlights Brazil’s multi-ethnic composition.

Workshop participants will build a papier-mâché boi (ox) and create costume hats.

Participants learn to accompany Bumba meu Boi rhythms on matracas (wood blocks)

and learn traditional dances.

OVERALL CONCEPT SITE PLAN

As part of the Freeport Art Museum’s vision to become the region’s foremost resource and destination for art, contributing to the revitalization of the community, we became part of an exciting grassroots collaboration beginning in the Fall of 2015. Known as City Centre Freeport, this initiative is a collaborative community effort aimed at utilizing creative placemaking techniques to create a downtown where more people want to live, work and play. One of the exciting initiatives in our plan is to establish an Arts District comprised of a Creative Corridor running along Chicago Avenue and an Art Plaza located on the museum’s property at the corner of Douglas and Chicago. Once complete, the Art Plaza will be the home of festivals and performances and will include a splashpad space for families to enjoy with their children; pathways and wayfinding elements that connect to the Library, Lincoln-Douglas Debate Square and Union Dairy; and several pieces of public art that celebrate our communities rich history. Progress has already begun and if you would like to know more about the project or would like to become involved, please visit the museum’s website at freeportartmuseum.com and click on the image of the art plaza for detailed information.
