MOUNTAIN TIMEBy DICK STOEFFLER

LAS VEGAS, NV.— In 1944 at the ripe old age of 17, I discov-ered bowling, thanks to a senior class buddy. It was at the 8-laneRiverside Bowling Academy. We went in to play a pinball machine, and while there I became enthralled in some other friends efforts tohurl a large ball down a wooden hallway endeavoring to knockover some sticks.

I didn’t try the game...but it intrigued me. On getting home, Iannounced to my folks that I “was gonna go bowling,” at whichpoint my mom came unglued in five different directions. “ Yo uare WHAT!?” I backed up a couple of steps, ‘cause when my 4 ft.,9 1/2 in. mom went into attack mode, being in the same room wasunwise.

“A bowling ALLEY? No chance, Charlie!”It didn’t help when I explained it was an “Academy” not an

“Alley.”She said she would “check it out,” but she doubted, as did I at

the moment, that I’d ever set foot in such a den of sin. She did “casethe joint,” And,even talked to the owners, and I received her nod ofapproval. (I’ve often wondered if I’d ever gotten involved in thesport if she had turned me down.)

Soon, I “HAD to have” my own bowling ball. When I made thatannouncement, it was fine... I worked and had my own money. Butwhen I advised my folks I had to borrow the car to go to Roy Bade’sPro Shop on Vermont Street in Los Angeles in order to get a proper“fit” for my Manhatten hard rubber sphere, more trouble. “Goodgrief, WHY? Get one here in town ... go to the sporting goods storeor JCPenney. You’d save lots of money.” “Mom... you NEVER goto a.department store for a bowling ball ... it HAS to be drilled byan expert!”

Well, I won a rare argument ... one which to this day still stands. When you are buying sporting equipment that has to be measuredto your hand and made or drilled with precision with proper“weights” and “pitches” ‘n all that stuff... you GO TO A PRO SHOP.You ain’t looking for bargain basement stuff ... you are looking totruly improve your game ... bowling or golf or whatever. Hey!A doctor doesn’t go to Toys R Us for medical equipment. Only goto the Pro Shop professionals ... even get advice about them fromother bowlers.

Also, beware of shop by mail or offers to buy on the internet. You may find outlandishly low prices, but all that glitters can turnout to be fool’s gold and leave you holding the empty (bowling)bag.

Manufacturers often use “distributors” to sell their products toPro Shops. Beware of “distributors” taking a short cut and peddlingdirect to the public at unbelievable ball prices that’ll make you thinkyou are in paradise. You might get a ball at roughly the same pricethe Pro Shop pays... from an internet source. You get the ball-butguess what? No holes. Sure, your Pro Shop will drill it properly ...for a fee. Frankly, they should charge the total amount of profitthey would have received if they sold the ball, which would havelikely included the drilling. Pro shops have to make a buck ... but, remember, they’ll “fine tune” the ball after you’ve purchased it fromthem.

One so called “distributor” even suggests you “buy” a cheapball from a Pro Shop, and after they drill it, ship it to the “distribu-tor” so they can copy it for your other ball purchases from them.Or, just go to your Pro Shop, get your exact measurements and sendthem with your order! (If they screw up-then you have to ship itback.) And they know nothing of your bowling style. They knownothing about your special needs, weights, etc. that the personalPro Shop contact can provide. Hey! IT AIN’T WORTH IT! Honest.

A “distributor” selling retail at wholesale prices? It ain’t kosher, even if they advertise on a bowling show. Manufacturers are nuts ifthey don’t halt this demeaning of their products. I can show you thenearly half-price numbers for the undrilled balls. At a Kmart orWal-Mart, sure, you might save a buck or two. This internet thing-it is lunacy. Maybe they are selling you “seconds,” how do youknow? You might save some bucks, but you simply will not get theprofessional finished product you’d get from a Pro Shop... in fact...inthe long run it might cost more (plugging, re-drilling, etc.) and notgive you the desired result, scoring-wise.

Good grief! I figured THAT out over a half-century ago as ateenager!

And keep your eye on Pro shops...they offer loads of legitimatespecials and values ... but more important, personal service andthey get you in the “right” ball ... the first time_

WEST COVINA–Rich Pe-coraro came through in crunchtime to win his first ABTA Titlein a splendid performance at su-per West Covina Lanes, as hedowned the top seed Jim Lozanoin the final game to take homethe championship trophy to SanBernardino and a nice $1,400top prize.

Rich topped a decent turnoutof 185 entrants (4-squads) whichsaw cut scores of Men +74 andthe Ladies hitting a good +40 tomake the semi finals. Super Se-niors added to the board wereMary Nakunz, Ely Cruz andAimee Ahorro.

The 41 bowlers in the Semisthen took to the floor, hoping toadvance to the finals in hopes ofmaking the top 16 Single Elims.

Jim Lozano took it to themin the semis blasting a huge+130 to be the top seed, and giv-ing him the benefit of sitting outto bowl in the title game. Rightbehind Jim was Rich Pecorarowith his fine +124 so Richwould get to sit out in round oneof the top 16 Single Elim finalsentering in round #2.

After the Semis it took a nice+25 to make the top 16 finaliswhich included four women, andlosers in round one were IanBenavides, David Polus, JosieMatsumoto, Ping Tubera, InnoHarman, Les tucker, and JowellTatlonghari, and they cashed in10-16th place and $100 each.

In round two we hadPecoraro enter the field anddown a pretty first time finalistJinny Lei in a tight one 237-231.Deborah Sanders edged KathySolowitz by one little pin 174-173, Marty Nakunz edged JohnLicauco 233-228 and Jello Graydowned the Match Game win-ner Noli Val De Leon 194-189and Losers of round 2 got checksof $105 in 6-9th places. A pit-tance to Mr. Val De Leon on thisnight:-) Nakunz edged Deborahin a good one 189-186 andPecoraro downed a jaded Mr.Gray 213-160, so Deborah andJello were 4th and 5th cashingfor $115 with Marty and Richto meet for the right to bowlLozano for the title.

This was a game that no onedeserved to lose and it went tothe 10th frame as Pecoraordoubled to ice the win in athriller to end Marty’s run andhe was third with a great show-ing and Rich off to the the title

Pecoraro Wins ABTA Title at West CovinaVal De Leon is $3,500 Match Game Winner • Por hits Match Series

match vs top seed Lozano. The Title game was set and

Jim elected to lead off and afterfive frames Pecoraro with adouble and being clean was wayin front as Jim had three opensand lost the shot, Pecorarodoubled again to put the title inthe bag and won out over a try-ing Lozano 224-185. Greatbowling Rich and this is title #2as he had won many years agoin the ABTA also and is nowback to bowling again! Mark anda title well-deserved and title #2could be next for this likable guy.

Great bowling by JimLozano and Marty Nakunz whohas been on a roll also.

ABTA Notes Tourney HiQualifiers were Jim Lozano wholed the men at +193, and prettyJenny Lei led the ladies at +95,and they get paid entries.

The optional doubles weretaken by Romy Bautista andSimon Rojas and their 1386 gotthem $110, and we paid 8 placesthis week in the doubles.

Brian Reyes, Greg, and GinaVelarde couldn’t eliminate oneanother in the 3-6-9 so they splitthe $50 after 6 shots and we willgo for a tidy $1,500 this week inthe 3-6-9 at Premiere Lanes.

The Match Game 3 wasMatched by one of our fine regu-lars Noli Val Deleon whose 187game drawn by Lozano wasworth the cap of $3,500 and wehad a $50 Carryover so will es-timate the Match Game at$1,250 this Saturday. Noli wasbuying the beer at West Covina

The Match Series also wasMatched as a 538 was drawn bytourney Lozano and it was $268to Stan Por so we will estimatea $250 Match Series Saturday.

I have had the pleasureof bowling with, and againstDennis for 30 years. He was tooyoung to go! He will be missedby all who knew him. GodBless!

The 2005 Annual BVL Fi-nals has come to an end. ForestLanes proved to be a great hostfor our Tournament. The staffwas very helpful starting withthe mechanic to the desk per-sonal all the way up to the man-ager. Thanks for making ourTournament a successful one.

The lanes, which are new bythe way, must have been in realgood shape. As reported lastweek, there was a 300 game andthe classic division ended witha duo of 700 series. Severalbowlers rolled way above theiraverages and Orange Countywill be represented very highly.

The unofficial division win-ners are as follows: Classic —Jason Nelson (708) andMichelle VanWyhe (668); Divi-sion A —Ronald Zettelmier(650) and Sue Appell (584); Di-vision B —Ernie Arriola (597)and Michelle Lindenmuth (554);Division C — John Koutis (557)and Irene Loder (517); DivisionD — Ben Rizzo (439) andSandy Dashiell (522), and Di-vision E — Cindy Fedden (335).The Division winners will re-ceive their awards at the open-ing ceremonies of the OrangeCounty Championship Tourna-ment on February 19. They willalso be eligible to bowl in theCalifornia Bowlers BVL SinglesClassic Tournament on May 6at Brunswick Covina Bowl.

Thanks again to all the Or-ange County bowlers for sup-porting BVL. My sincerethanks to Forest Lanes for host-ing this years’ Tournament. Andthe most important people I needto thank are the workers andthose bowlers that came out toshow their support for our hos-pitalized and disabled Veterans.

DOWNEY–The Brunswick/Cal BowlingSupply League is deep into the third round ofthe season. Four teams have secured spots inthe end-of-season rolloff, and four more spotsare up for grabs (plus two wild card spots). Ironi-cally at four seeded teams (by the luck of thedraw) ended up in “B” Division this round.

The T. D. Rowe team finally made a dent inthe Transcon Logistics armour, taking threegames from the over-all leader. The Transconcoasters all had sixes—Steve brode 671, DanCerio 642, Steve Schroeder 625 and Larry Gray630. They just never let up. But T.D. Rowe hasbattled up stream to with-in one game ofTranscon 16/15. For the “ROWE’RS CarlosCastillo 578, Julio Vasquez 685, JeffHickenbottom 642 and Derek Lee 706.

Already seeded Strike Connection is block-ing Pro Approach-Lakewood and J.C. Spas fromadvancing to a “position’ opportunity at theTranscon group. Both advancing teams won fourthis week.

For the “Spa” getters: James Cox 611, RandyMyers 582, Norm Black Sr. 628 and David VanGaston 657. They dunked “The Immel Team”for all four big points and sit four off the lead-ers 16. “The Immel Team” could only musterone 600 by Frank Bellinder. I heard Dave Scottwanted to take the new elevator (for wheel-chairs) straight to the basement and out the back.Get that thumbhole fixed! Or was that “dumbhole” fixed??

The “A” Division top spot is being covetedby Threadworks (15 wins) for at least one more

week, but Reback’s Plumbing at (14 wins) and ProApproach-Downey (14 wins) will be chomping atthe bit this coming Monday hoping for a sweep.Actually Threadworks clobbered Pro Approach-Downey this week to take the lead. Lanes 9-10weren’t giving up strikes easily. For the Pro’s: MarkZirges 548, Gary Gladstone 524 (you should checkMY ball-driller), Anthony Drapeau 633 and CareyMatkin 626.

The Threadworkers stitched up some greatscores. Tony Rodriguez (down 100 from last week)605, Mike Mellick 534, Anthony Carlton Jr. 643and James Maker 695.

Reback’s Plumbing (14 wins) plunged right intothe strike pool and salvaged four wins from Etonic.Check out these scores: Gabriel Garza 533, ScottSlocum 644, Jason Carrillo 723 and Levi Slocum736 for 2636.

Pro Approach-Lakewood (B Division) poppedthe biggest games of the night against the alreadyseeded Bowlers Depot-West Covina. How about?David Fairow Jr. 601, Billy Myers Jr. 607, PaulSmith 217-234-267/718 and the Whooper byVernon Adams 290-266-267/823. Add four to thePro Approach total. Now only four away fromTranscon.

Check the top 10 list on this page. Last weekthere were all sevens, this week a mix with newfaces.

Visitors are always welcome on Monday nitesat nine. Bring your equipment. Some sub spotsmight be available.

Reminder: No subs on the last night of the round.Make changes NOW.

SAN DIEGO–It’s been a while since you have heard from KearnyMesa Bowl. I will try to get everyone up to date. There were plentyof high scores at the end of 2004 and the beginning of 2005.

On December 6, during the Ebonite/Chovan league, the Smithbrothers, Scott, Shed and Steve shot 300, 300 and 279, respectively, during their third games.

Carlos “No Thumb” Garcia finally reached the 300 club afternumerous scores in the 290’s. Yes, he finally carried the 10 pin!

There were a lot of high scores for some of our new bowlers.Congratulations to Tom Gregg and Bob Champagne on their per-sonal high scores!

The annual “No-Tap” Tournament was held Dec 26-29 and hada record turnout. There were over 120 teams and over 170 singles.Jimmy “Goldschlager” Huber and Woody “Jagermeister” Parcellswon the doubles with an outstanding 4 game total of 2,410. Need-less to say they also took first and second in the singles category.

Congratulations to all of the winning teams of the first half ofthe season.

Last, but not least, a very special Happy Birthday goes out toOscar Jones who, on his birthday, shot a 300. Way to go Oscar!!!!!

Cerritos Lanesby John Elston

CERRITOS–Bowlers wereoff and bowling this past Satur-day as the second week of thelong winter season got started. As expected, there were manyhigh scores in all divisions. Thewinter season is typically onewhere bowlers work hard to setnew records as school is settledand bowling seems to peak formany.

The high scoring was led bynone other than Mr. Adam Ferry. The recent high average leaderfrom last season truly knows the, meaning of consistency. After1 246-670 set week one, Adamfollowed that with a well shot239-674 set. Whatever this jun-ior bowler is eating for break-fast on Sat. mornings, needs tobe shared with others. Seriously, simply said great bowlingAdam!!!

In the Striking Force severalof the male bowlers are work-ing hard to improve their gameas last season saw the talentedfemale bowlers lead from startto finish. Leading the way thesepast two weeks were JohnElston jr. with a nice 198 gamefollowed by Bobby Hornacekwho rolled 163. Hats off to thesetwo talented young men as theseason is early but this writerknows that both of them willundoubtedly have a great sea-son. In the Rookie Division,Karen Dimaya and Tasha Jansensquared off early this season. Ifthe first match is indicative ofwhat lies ahead, beware. Karenled all bowlers with a 115-316set, while Tasha was close be-hind rolling 108-293. While the4th of July is a few months away, these bowlers seem destined toprovide some fireworks. In theLil Raider division, Lucas Villasprinted to the century mark firstwith a 102 game while closebehind was Ty Moeller with awell shot 101 game. Keep up thegreat bowling.

Winners at JSTat KeystoneBy Brian Carmichael

JST visited the Norwalk areathis past Sunday with its secondstop of the season at KeystoneLanes. This was JST’s eighthtournament of the season signi-fying we are now half waythrough the JST season, mean-ing bowling will sure to be upto top-notch in the coming tour-naments. The point’s race for thespots in the High Points Tour-nament at the end of the seasonis really tight, and every upcom-ing tournament and point willmatter. Along with all the greatscholarships that the JST has tooffer, the bowling was huge thispast Sunday. Thanks to our won-derful sponsors: B&W BowlingEquipment, and Storm BowlingProducts we were able to payout $905 at this last tournamentalone. We could never thankthem enough.

Now let’s get into the bowl-ing.

The Novice Div. would onceagain be a four game tournamentwith the top score being the win-ner. James Griley would takeadvantage of the format andwould blow away the field, win-ning both high game and highseries points with a 220 game, and 744 series, nearly winningby 140 pins. Honorable men-tions to Allie Ijams for gettingsecond with a 607 set. Congratu-lations to James on his greatbowling and his first title of theseason, good for the $40 1st placescholarship and JST Championsshirt.

The Intermediate Div. sawone bowler just explode on thelanes, and make a huge gap fromherself to 2nd place all day long. From the first game of the dayon, Brittany Page was in firstand never looked back shootingthe high game and high seriesof qualifying with a huge 256game, and would be the onlybowler plus, with a 872 set. Pagewould continue the dominancein match play, keeping herselfin 1st for the roll off, as RobertGonzales stayed in 2nd, andDavid Philips jumping from thecut line to the roll off, in 3rd.Gonzales would defeat Philipsin the first, semi-final match209-156, and was then in the fi-nal against Page, with bothbowlers looking for their firstJST titles. Page was still hot, andwould fire a 211 game to get byGonzales 188 game for the win.Tremendous bowling out to

Brittany, and congrats on the winfor the $90 scholarship prize andJST Champions shirt.

The Advance Div. onceagain had the best turnout ofbowlers of the tournament, andscores were definitely on thehigher side. Ryan Aguilarbowled himself to a good sizelead for match play, shooting thehigh series of qualifying with an893 set. He also shot the highgame of qualifying with a nice268 game. Aguilar would defendhis top spot in match play, butonly by two pins, as J RMonteith would roll himself aperfect 300 game in match playto move himself into 2nd. ChrisHawes would move into 3rd,Samantha Jimenez in 4th, andJarryd Bivins in 5th. Congrats toJ R on the 300 game, he will getto choose any Storm bowlingball of his choice thanks to oursponsor Storm Bowling Prod-ucts. The finals roll off wouldbe quite high scoring, asJimenez would snap off Bivinsin the opening match 244-223,but then lose in the next matchto Hawes 216-211. Monteithwas still bowling well, and de-feated Hawes in the semi-finalmatch 234-184. The title matchwas then set, and both bowlerswould be looking for their firstJST titles, and would go downto the final frame. At the end,Aguilar would prevail overMonteith 185-174, winning hisfirst title. Congratulations toRyan on the win, and winningthe $125 1st place scholarship, and JST Champions shirt.

The Open Div had the top 4going into match play all within4 pins of each other, but MasonSherman was leading with an891 set. That did not stopAshkan Tahvildaran from shoot-ing the high game in qualifyingwith a great 269 game. Thebowling improved in matchplay, as Josh Blanchard rolledhimself into 1st, as Shermandown to 2nd, Brian Carmichaelkeeping himself in 3rd, and JaredLawrence moving up one spotinto 4th. The first match of theroll off saw huge scoring withLawrence defeating Carmichaelwith a great 289 game toCarmichael’s 235. The secondmatch was just as high; with oneshot not carrying for Lawrencedetermined his outcome, as helost to Sherman 267-258. Thefinals match was two bowlerslooking for their second title ofthe season. Sherman had to getthe first strike in the tenth to winthe match, and he would do that, and also go off the sheet, win-ning the title with a 214 toBlanchard’s 197. 20TH DEAFLYMPICS BOWLING AT MELBOURNE,AUSTRALIA ENDS WITH MASTERS

Before I begin with this final article on the Masters, I made amistake in the previous story. I checked with Lindy Decker and shetold me that there were no medals awarded for first three places inthe 24 games All-events. So ignore the headline about her winningthe gold, Sharon Rutherford the silver and Taiwan’s Shu-MinHuang’s bronze. Also the headline about Taiwan’s Li-Hsiao Chang’s4th gold and the story about England’s Ray Lay’s silver medal andNetherlands’ bowler getting the bronze. They just placed 1,2 and 3in All-events standings and no awards were given,

I apologize for the error. That means the Team USA Bowlershas one less gold and one less silver, Lindy Decker had two golds, not three and Sharon Rutherford, two silvers, not three.

TAIWAN’S LI-HSIAO CHANG BEAT USA’S STOGRYNFOR MASTERS GOLD, SWEDEN 3RD

While Taiwan’s top bowler Li-Hsiao Chang led the top 16 menfor the Masters round robin match plays, all 16 men’s all-eventsscores were discarded and all started anew. Taiwan led with 3 menqualified for this event, Netherlands and Sweden each had two menand England, Malaysia, Korea, Austria, USA (Stogryn), Canada,Norway, Italy and Finland had one each. All these bowlers aver-aged better than 194.

After the first day of 8 games in match plays, Sung Hawn Kim,Republic of Korea with back to back 257-255 games in games 4 &5, led all with 1664 plus 40 bonus points for 4 match games wonfor 1704 total. Although he won only 3 matches, Li-Hsiao Changplaced 2nd with 1686 total which included a 258 in game 3.

Canada’s George Haas had the day’s high game 269 in game 7helping him to 1602 plus 60 points for 3rd. Darrell Stogryn carry-ing the hopes of Team USA, closed this day with a 245 for 1565plus 50 wins and 1615 total for 4th place.

In the final day’s match plays, Stogryn, feeling better, startedwith the day’s high game 253 to move up to 2nd place. Li-HsiaoChang also started good with a 237, moved to the top while the daybefore leader Kim started poorly with a 125. Haas held on to thirdplace with a 194.

In game 10 (2nd game of the day) Stogryn rolled a 239 but Li-Hsiao held on to lead with a 226. In game 11, it is the same butStogryn got closer with a 227 while Li-Hsiao shot a 211. Aftergame 12, Stogryn continued his assault on the pins with a 221 andmoved into the lead as Li-Hsiao fell with a 190.

Unfortunately that was the only time Stogryn touched the leadas Li-Hsiao bounced back with 192, 245 and 216 while Stogrynfailed to hit a 200 game for remaining three games. But Stogrynwas way ahead of third place Sweden’s best bowler Anders Nordella veteran of three Deaflympics and Stogryn had to face Li-Hsiao inthe position round 16th game.

In the position round contest, Li Hsiao became the top seed inthe medal finals when he rolled a 215 to beat Stogryn’s 202. Nordelltook 3rd place when he defeated Canada’s Haas in a close contest188 to 186.

In the medal match play, Stogryn defeated Nordell 203 to 194for the right to face Li-Hsiao in the two games gold medal match. In the first game, Stogryn started poorly with a 160 as Li-Hsiaoeasily beat him with a 180. In the next game Stogryn came backwith a 226 but Li-Hsiao won his third gold medal with 229 and 409total. Storyn received his first silver medal and Nordell got thebronze medal.

USA’S LINDY DECKER RECOVERED IN TIME TOSTRIKE GOLD IN WOMEN’S MASTERS
