    World Situation

    oThe 2011 statistics show total worldwide banana crop of 145.4 million metric

    tonnes.

    oBananas and plantains constitute a major staple food crop for millions of people

    in developing countries.

    oGlobal snack food market is forecast to reach US$380 billion by the year 2017

    oEurope is the largest market for snack products amounting to Euros 12.4 billion.

    India Situation

    The production of banana during the year 2012-13 is 30.28 million tonnes against

    28.46 million tonnes last year (2011-2012).

    The 2011 statistics show that India led the world in banana production, producing

    around 20% of the worldwide crop.

    Less than 0.1% of current Indian banana production is exported. Tamil Nadu is the top banana producing state producing 8016.35 thousand tonnes,

    followed by Maharashtra 4100.00 thousand tonnes and Gujarat 4047.77 thousand

    tonnes.
