• In 2001 Gulf Air explored the training world for best training practices.

• Gulf Air realised that although traditional training practices are “safe”, they are not necessarily the best way to achieve the desired safety goals.

AQP has enhanced the effectiveness of Gulf Air’s training programs.

Support of Regulators

• Bahrain CAA has accepted our use of the FAA Advisory Circular on AQP (AC 120-54 and its amendments and 14 CFR Part 121 Subpart Y)

▪ The FAA has been supporting Gulf Air AQP since “day one”.

o We started our cadet pilot scheme for nationals in the early 80‘s

o Used flight schools all over the world from California to Brisbane

o 60% of today’s GF CAPT’s are NATIONALS

o 50% of the captains trained for command under AQP

o 90% of today’s Gf First officers are NATIONALS

o Almost all first officers took their initial type rating under AQP

o Ab-Initio training continues today

Golden Lessons Learned • We must look for fault in our system ... NOT just

the Pilot

• We must use DATA to find and address the operational RISKS.

• We must be creative in the way we provide training and evaluation, not just repeatedly deal with the symptoms.

• We must think, act, manage, measure, and improve SYSTEMICALLY.

• Non-Traditional Training Programs were never meant to be stagnant Alternative Regulation
