Over time, England’s settlements grew and began paying taxes to King of England.

Established as “colonies.”

Colony: an area of land that is under the control of another country and is occupied by settlers of that country.

and geography.

These factors had a direct impact on each region’s economy, government, and way of life.

Motivations

The reason settlers founded each of the 13 Colonies

was because they were in search of freedom

However, they were in search of different types of freedom

Rhode IslandFounded in 1636 by Roger Williams and his followers after disagreeing with the Massachusetts Bay Colony as a place to seek religious freedom and the separation of church & state

ConnecticutFounded in 1635 by those who were

seeking political and religious freedom after disagreeing with

leaders of Massachusetts Bay Colony

New England Colonies

The Puritans were a group that came to New England to escape being punished for their religion.

They governed a strict colony in Massachusetts that was based around the Bible and the church.

They had elected officials who were all male. No women could serve in the Puritan government, but they still had more rights than people in Europe.

The settlers here made a great deal of

money fur trapping.

Other economic opportunities in New

England were based around the sea:

fishing, shipbuilding, and whaling.

The soil was rocky and so the New

England Colonies were not known for

their farms.

People in New England towns lived, worked, and worshiped close together.

The meeting house and the church were the most important buildings in the town.

The Puritans settled in Massachusetts. Because they were so strict, some Puritans left Massachusetts and founded the other New England Colonies.

The Colonies of New Hampshire, Connecticut, and Rhode Island were friendlier and more tolerant of people’s differences.

Children were taught to read so they could study the Bible.

Boys got to also learn Latin and Math and other subjects to get into college.

Girls could learn to read, but they weren't allowed to go to grammar school or to college.

New England Colonies

New England Colonies, Public Schools: In the New England colonies, since most people lived in the towns, there were enough people to support a public school. Families helped to support the schools with firewood, money, food, produce, and fish. The children of families who could not afford to give firewood or something else to support the school and its teachers had to sit in the back of the room, as far away from heat as you could get. Kids were taught reading, writing, and arithmetic.

New England Colonies

Colonial families in New England often had 6 or 7 children.

They lived in small wooded houses with few rooms. Many homes only had one room with a huge fireplace.

The men and boys worked in the fields and the women and girls prepared the food and worked in the home.

Children were taught how to read so they could read the Bible.

Boys were able to go on to Harvard, the first college in the Colonies.

Anne Hutchinson• Also a strong supporter of religious freedom and

tolerance who lived in Massachusetts Bay Colony

• Like Williams, her religious views caused controversy and she fled from Massachusetts Bay Colony to Rhode Island in 1638

Roger Williams• A preacher and farmer in Massachusetts Bay Colony,

he supported freedom of religion and the separation of church & state

• His views were seen as radical and he was banished from Massachusetts Bay Colony

• He fled to nearby territory, lived with Native Americans, and founded Rhode Island in 1636

New Hampshire was formed by other colonists that moved from the

Massachusetts Bay area because they did not agree with the Puritan rules
