The holiest and most important celebration of the year for Christians is Easter Sunday and the three days leading up to it: Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Saturday’s Easter Vigil. We encourage and invite you to join us for these most holy of days to worship the God who gave everything to rescue us from sin, death, and the devil, bringing healing to our broken world. We pray that God speaks to you in these worship services, draws you near to Him, and deepens your faith. Please come and join us for worship on these holy days. Whether you are worshiping with us for the first time, or the first time in a long time, you are always welcome. God uses special times like Easter and Holy Week to awaken or rekindle faith in us. We invite you to come and worship with us again and often and seeing all that First Lutheran offers to nurture your faith journey. This season let us urge one another to again receive the gift of Jesus. Receive the forgiveness of your sins. Receive the promise of eternal life. Receive the challenge to join Jesus in this life to bring justice and peace to all the world. As we retell the story of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection, may God restore to you the joy of your salvation and grant you peace. Thank you for the most generous donation to Mission Medical Center! We are so glad you thought of MMC and we want you to know how much your donation is sincerely appreciated by our neighbors that currently need help. With your donation, MMC will be able to provide services to many in our community that have not been able to afford health care services. Our primary mission is to provide comprehensive health and wellness services to the uninsured and under-served. Thank you from our hearts for making this continued vision possible!

Thank You GOLA Participants

Thank you to all the GOLA participants– choir, musicians, actors, stage crew, behind-the-scenes helpers—everyone who offered their talents and sacrificed their time to help make this year’s 25th Anniversary Gallery of Living Art a great success!

Congratulations

Congratulations to former Woodland Park music teacher Morton Dickson for his induction into the Colorado High School Activities Association Hall of Fame.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! For all of you who participated in Gallery of Living Art, or who have participated in years past, I want to say thank you. What I saw in GOLA was an inspiration and a reminder

to all of us what good a congregation can do when it pulls together. For the 25th time you’ve created a masterpiece to share with the world the good news of Jesus’ life death and resurrection. You shared the gospel this weekend, and I’m proud of you! A congregation is one of the most interesting or-ganizations in the world. There are very few where young and old work together for the common good. There are few institutions who exist primarily to good for those who aren’t part of the institution. I can’t think of many organizations that get people to sing together songs that span hundreds and even thousands of years. A congregation is a group of people who because of their faith in Jesus, come

THE POWER OF WORKING TOGETHER

together to give of their time, talent and even treasure for the sake of a mission. I saw all of this on full display this weekend. The choir members, musicians, technicians, stage hands, make-up artists, directors, lighting operators, cast members and crew worked end-less hours to put on a FREE show for anybody to watch and hear and experience the Christian story. WOW! Their only goal was to inspire others to faith. You succeeded. Both by your work and effort and by the product of living pictures of Jesus’ life. I am just so grateful for every volunteer and staff member who put in the hours and made the sacrifice to give this gift to others. Thank you, thank you, thank you. You have reminded us all of the power of a congregation working together to achieve a common vision. -Pastor Travis

Mayor Suthers’ letter, congratulating GOLA on our 25th anniversary, noting First Lutheran’s long-standing commitment to supporting our community through many forms of outreach.

We’ll have tables and chairs set up, pizza for lunch, and lots of fellowship and fun along the way. If you are not able to join in the fun but still would like to help, we are going to need CANDY. What’s So Amazing About Grace?

In 1987, an IRA bomb buried Gordon Wilson and his twenty-year-old daughter beneath five feet of rubble. Gordon alone survived. And forgave. He said to the bombers, “I have lost my daughter, but I bear no grudge…. I shall pray, tonight and every night, that God will forgive you.” His words caught the media’s ear and out of one man’s grief, the world got a glimpse of grace. What’s So Amazing About Grace is a book written by Philip Yancey. We will view a short video by Yancey about the topics below, followed by discussion.

Women’s Bible Study

The Armor of God—All day, every day, an invisi-ble war rages around you. A cunning devilish enemy seeks to wreak havoc that matters to you. But his reign stops right here, right now. With you. This 7 lesson Bible study is more than just a biblical description of the believer’s inventory. It’s an action plan for putting on your armor and developing a personalized strategy to secure victory against the enemy. Yes… a strategy. Author Priscilla Shirer will bring to light the war, and challenge you to suit up, stand firm, and secure victory in our life.

The Last Week of Jesus’ Life

This study, being led by Pastor Bob, will examine what biblical scholars think happened during the final week of Jesus’ life. We will journey from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday with professors Marcus Borg and John Dominic Crossan. Both have written extensively on the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. The book The Last Week by Crossan and Borg will be used and is available for $12.00.

Contemplative Prayer Group

There will be a slight change to our Sunday morning Adult Seminar schedule to make time for those who would like to be part of a contemplative prayer group. From 9:15 am – 10:15 am we will have our regular Adult Seminar. From 10:20 – 10: 40 am those who would like participate in contemplative prayer will gather. Both will be in the upstairs Worship Center. This schedule will continue through Lent and beyond depending upon interest. Everyone is welcome to attend. For those not familiar with contemplative prayer, Pastor Bob will provide you with the needed information to participate.

At one of the "Informational Gatherings" we had concerning the renovation of the Peel House, one of our long-time members made a compelling observation. She said (paraphrasing), "Think of all those congregations who have gone before us and brought us to where we are as a church today. We need to continue their work." There have been six major investments in the physical presence of First Lutheran: 1890 - The Lutheran Chapel at Platte and Weber 1927-1929 - The completion of the Sanctuary at Platte and Weber 1958 - The sale of the Platte and Weber property and move to the Jewett Mansion 1964-1966 - Building our present Sanctuary 1980 - Adding the Education Wing 1994 - Adding the Ministry Center . . . and next . . . 2019 - Renovation of the Peel House. Over the coming months "From the Archives" will highlight short features from these past efforts. As we will see, expanding our Christian witness can be frustrating and challenging - but in the end, joyful. Mike Olsen, Church Archivist

From the Archives

From a financial ledger entitled "Subscriptions to Lutheran Chapel, June 23, 1890. Included among the 100-odd folks listed - and their pledges - are: Gustave Nelson, $5.00 - paid in full Carl Holmquist, $20.00 - paid in full George Brown, $2.00 - $1.00 paid, $1.00 pledged George Hamel "gives two weeks labor" [value] $36.00 Jacob Becker, $50.00 - paid in full Note the donation of labor - we can assume a six day work week in 1890 - so a day's wages was $3.00
