Thorntree Country Club in Desoto, Texas, hosts the 11th annual Bishop’s Camp Charity Golf Classic. It’s a Florida scramble event that’s lots of fun with a bonus, 100% of the proceeds benefit Bishop’s Camp. Founded in 1995, Bishop’s Camp is a seven week summer camp for inner city children between the ages of 6 to 14. Children enjoy a full day of activities including math, reading, science, art, music and sports, as well as snacks and lunch. Camp is free to qualifying inner city

Bishop’s Camp Charity Golf Classic
Prep Time: 10 min Cook Time: 30 min Serves: 6 to 8 servings
Cheesy Squash Casserole Ingredients:
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
6 medium yellow summer squash, thinly sliced
1 large Vidalia onion, thinly sliced
1 tablespoon butter
1/2 cup grated Parmesan
1 cup shredded sharp Cheddar
1/2 cup sour cream
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
1 sleeve crackers, crushed medium to fine (recommended: Ritz)
Directions: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 2-quart casserole dish. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Saute the squash, onion, and butter until soft. Transfer to a bowl and stir in the Parmesan, Cheddar, and sour cream. Add salt and pepper, to taste. Place in the prepared casserole dish and sprinkle the cracker crumbs evenly over the top. Bake for 20 minutes or until the top is golden and bubbly.

We are well into our steamy Texas summer. Life usually moves at a slower pace and we spend invaluable time with our children. Rarely am I as moved as I was the afternoon I spent at Stable Strides Farm located at the Bridlewood Equestrian Center. Stable Strides Farm is a non-profit founded by Mandy and J. Cleveland and is a therapeutic riding program for children and adults with special needs. The magic is seen as you meet the riders and watch them transform into confident and disciplined equestrians. Riding a horse moves the rider’s body in a manner similar to the human gait, so riders with physical needs often show improvement in flex-ibility, balance and muscle strength. Just some of the needs served
through therapeutic riding are those who suffer from autism, ADD & ADHD, brain injuries, Cerebral Palsy, Down Syn-drome and Multiple Sclerosis, but the list is much longer. The students and their teacher, Mandy, are in a special league of talent, determination and accomplishment which left me inspired, privileged to see a glimpse of such beauty in our world. Vacation Spots for your Flower Color! Kronda Thimesch Green Meadows Landscaping Give your flower pots a rest while you are on vacation this summer. Here is one of my pots tucked into the landscape. The shade keeps the pots cool slowing the evaporation process. Full sun flowers can take a 1-2 weeks of shade with our hot summer temperatures. Make sure the sprinklers reach the pots (run a test cycle to see how much water reaches the pots). In our 100 temperatures you can even place your pots in 100% shade. This works well if you don’t have someone watering your pots while you are away.

It must have been My Turn to experience a major car wreck last month, as somehow I’d managed to escape one for the past few decades. There I was, on the way home from Irving in the evening, and I never saw it coming: the lumbering Chevy Astro Van that T-boned my driver’s side, knocking me into the middle of next week. It was more than a fender-bender, but at least there were no broken bones, nor need for an ambulance. As I sat in my now-crushed car, trying to settle my shaking limbs, I noticed a car pull into the adjacent parking lot. A sweet-faced woman climbed out and walked toward me. “I’m not badly hurt;” I called out, “I’m just waiting for the police.” “I know,” she replied. “But I’m going to stay here and wait with you until the police arrive.” After reading the astonished look on my face she continued, “A month ago I was in an accident myself, and someone stopped and did the same thing for me.” Ah. The ultimate in Paying it Forward. She held my unsteady hand and chatted quietly with me for seven or eight
minutes, then fluttered (OK, walked) away when the squad car rolled in behind us. The warmth of her kindness stayed with me for days, and I later dubbed her “Angel #1.” A short time later, while waiting for the tow truck and watching the police officer write her report, an anonymous Angel #2 (her name was actually Meredith) tapped me on the shoulder from behind. When I turned around and saw her shy smile, she handed me a small piece of paper that held her phone number. “I saw the whole thing in my rearview mirror, and thought you might need a witness, just in case,” she said. I was thankful, but a little confused. “The accident happened almost 30 minutes ago – did you drive all the way just to give me your phone number?” “No,” she explained. “Your wreck happened just as my son and I were pulling into his therapy appointment across the street. When we walked out and saw that you were still here, I came over.” I was humbled to think that she, like me, was a busy woman who needed to barrel home and tend to her family that evening. Instead of driving by to merely confirm that Hey, it looks like it’s all under control, she took the extra minutes to stop and connect with me. As the day of the wreck fades into the calendar, the frustration of replacing my car and the nagging ache in my back will fade as well. Thankfully, my memory remains clear, if not glowing, of the kindness of those beautiful strangers. My Angels in the Intersection.

What motivates a successful and seasoned woman to pack up and move from her lovely home in temperate California climate to our sometimes steamy north Texas climate? It’s grandchildren, of course. With a thriving portrait photography

I may be a little late in reviewing this book, since it technically was published in November of 2010, but since I just discovered it I’ll share my thoughts. If you’re like me, you may have received this book as a gift and set it aside. My intentions
were to jump right in, but I found myself dreading the experience. I thought this book was about death, and since that hits a little too close to home, I decided I probably wasn’t ready for it just yet. When my daughter suggested I read it, insisting it wasn’t sad and depressing, but rather a fascinating account of a little boy’s experience through a life-threatening illness, I decided to give it a shot. I had been wrong. It wasn’t about death at all, but rather about joy and happiness and faith and family. I found myself engrossed in the story and eagerly anticipating each new chapter. I instantly became attached to the main character, a little boy named Colton. His description of heaven, in his no-nonsense childlike way, paints a perfect picture of what he experienced. You find yourself in that place, fascinated and amused as this young boy tries to describe things for which he often had no words. Heaven is For Real has created a buzz around the world. Whether you believe the story or not, or believe in Heaven or not, it’s worth the read. You will be uplifted by the family’s faith as they pray for the healing of their young son, and charmed by the boy’s frankness and childlike trust in what he saw.

Helen Young, owner of The Tutoring Center, is a woman who never gave up on her dream of nurturing young minds. She is a gifted tutor and has opened a business
motivated from this love of helping children in such a special way. For years she worked in the business world climbing the corporate ladder to an executive position with a well known insurance agency; yet she never gave up her desire of tutoring. Recently she and her husband Tim opened The Tutoring Center in Flower Mound, which focuses on the core subjects of reading, writing and mathematics. TTC also offers online support for science, including physics and chemistry. Some things you should know about The Tutoring Center is that they teach both phonics and sight word recognition to readers. Classroom structure is especially helpful for children with short attention
spans, an ever growing obstacle in our fast paced society of instant gratification. The center offers test taking strategies, including the SAT and ACT tests. Many articles are written about home security and fire prevention, but I’ve seen very few addressing the measures one should take to insure
the security of the backyard pool. News of the recent deaths of twins at their grandparents’ pool made me stop and think a bit about how tragedies of this sort may be prevented and how the security industry addresses it. In my research I’ve found that most incidents involve young children just looking for some adventure in a neighbor’s yard. If this has been something you’ve thought about (and we all have at one time or another), I can suggest that we go back to security basics. Making the attractive nuisance not so attractive would be the logical answer. As is true with any type of security, outdoor lighting plays an important role. Light up that pool area with motion detector lights. Also related is that your decorative shrubbery and landscaping should be designed
so that the pool can easily be seen from the main house. Local ordinances dictate the requirement for fencing but you can also add a coded lock to the gate for entry. Go one step further and install cameras so that you can monitor the activity. There are various pool alarms available for both in and above ground pools and gates. There are even a few manufacturers that have a remote alarm that will alert you wherever you may be in the house. A quick internet search yielded some interesting offerings from companies such as Pooleye, Safety Turtle, Pool Patrol, Poolguard and I’m sure many more. As I have no actual knowledge of these companies or products, doing your own research and consulting with your trusted pool company would prove invaluable. By far the best method of pool safety is adult supervision and the proper education of the people that may use it, from family members and friends to the kids next door and their parents. As the newest member of the writing group for the magazine, I had to stop and think about what I wanted to write about for my first article. I could go on for days about the promo-
tional products business but decided that on my first assignment I would impart some life les-sons about starting your own business. As a woman that came from the corporate world, I had to make a huge mental adjustment to being responsible for everything when I started out. It was exhilarating yet terrifying. I knew a lot of folks in the community but that didn’t mean business. I went to all kinds of meetings, networking groups, and even asked friends for leads. The one thing I learned along the way is not only do you grow your business, but you make friends in the oddest places. And some of those blossom into life-long friendships. You can still work with the people, but the more friends you make along the way, the more enriched your life will become.
The first two years of our business have been very good to me because of all the people that I have surrounded myself with and I know that I would not be where I am today without any of them. So when someone invites you to a business lunch, take the time to stop and have that extra cup of coffee and learn more about them and who they are for someday they may be a business partner or an extraordinary employee who just needed to see their value.
