Rarely am I as moved as I was the afternoon I spent at Stable Strides Farm located at the Bridlewood Equestrian Center. Stable Strides Farm is a non-profit founded by Mandy and J. Cleveland and is a therapeutic riding program for children and adults with special needs. The magic is seen as you meet the riders and watch them transform into confident and disciplined equestrians. Riding a horse moves the rider’s body in a manner similar to the human gait, so riders with physical needs often show improvement in flex-ibility, balance and muscle strength. Just some of the needs served

through therapeutic riding are those who suffer from autism, ADD & ADHD, brain injuries, Cerebral Palsy, Down Syn-drome and Multiple Sclerosis, but the list is much longer. The students and their teacher, Mandy, are in a special league of talent, determination and accomplishment which left me inspired, privileged to see a glimpse of such beauty in our world. For more information, contact Mandy at www.StableStridesFarm.org. Doreen and Bob McKenzie, owners of Bridlewood Equestrian Center are a wonderful resource as well.

Vacation Spots for your Flower Color! Kronda Thimesch Green Meadows Landscaping Give your flower pots a rest while you are on vacation this summer. Here is one of my pots tucked into the landscape. The shade keeps the pots cool slowing the evaporation process. Full sun flowers can take a 1-2 weeks of shade with our hot summer temperatures. Make sure the sprinklers reach the pots (run a test cycle to see how much water reaches the pots). In our 100 temperatures you can even place your pots in 100% shade. This works well if you don’t have someone watering your pots while you are away.

It must have been My Turn to experience a major car wreck last month, as somehow I’d managed to escape one for the past few decades. There I was, on the way home from Irving in the evening, and I never saw it coming: the lumbering Chevy Astro Van that T-boned my driver’s side, knocking me into the middle of next week. It was more than a fender-bender, but at least there were no broken bones, nor need for an ambulance. As I sat in my now-crushed car, trying to settle my shaking limbs, I noticed a car pull into the adjacent parking lot. A sweet-faced woman climbed out and walked toward me. “I’m not badly hurt;” I called out, “I’m just waiting for the police.” “I know,” she replied. “But I’m going to stay here and wait with you until the police arrive.” After reading the astonished look on my face she continued, “A month ago I was in an accident myself, and someone stopped and did the same thing for me.” Ah. The ultimate in Paying it Forward. She held my unsteady hand and chatted quietly with me for seven or eight

minutes, then fluttered (OK, walked) away when the squad car rolled in behind us. The warmth of her kindness stayed with me for days, and I later dubbed her “Angel #1.” A short time later, while waiting for the tow truck and watching the police officer write her report, an anonymous Angel #2 (her name was actually Meredith) tapped me on the shoulder from behind. When I turned around and saw her shy smile, she handed me a small piece of paper that held her phone number. “I saw the whole thing in my rearview mirror, and thought you might need a witness, just in case,” she said. I was thankful, but a little confused. “The accident happened almost 30 minutes ago – did you drive all the way just to give me your phone number?” “No,” she explained. “Your wreck happened just as my son and I were pulling into his therapy appointment across the street. When we walked out and saw that you were still here, I came over.” I was humbled to think that she, like me, was a busy woman who needed to barrel home and tend to her family that evening. Instead of driving by to merely confirm that Hey, it looks like it’s all under control, she took the extra minutes to stop and connect with me. As the day of the wreck fades into the calendar, the frustration of replacing my car and the nagging ache in my back will fade as well. Thankfully, my memory remains clear, if not glowing, of the kindness of those beautiful strangers. My Angels in the Intersection.

When you meet Millie Luster you are immediately mesmerized by her beauty and the artful way she wears her makeup. It’s neither overdone nor overstated, but the colors and shading remind you of a Renoir or Monet, except the canvas is her face. This is the service she is able to offer her clients. For apparent reasons, Millie has a passion for makeup and loves helping others become as beautiful through the talented application of makeup. She’s been in the beauty industry most of her life and it’s no surprise that she is coming out with her own line of makeup, soon to be on the market. She enjoys working with wedding parties,

theater actors, photographers and models, but the list goes on. So for your next special occasion ladies, contact Millie Luster and let her transform your look from the everyday to the “WOW!” factor. Contact her at 940.594.7490 or www.millieluster.com.

What motivates a successful and seasoned woman to pack up and move from her lovely home in temperate California climate to our sometimes steamy north Texas climate? It’s grandchildren, of course. With a thriving portrait photography

business established, she packed up her cameras and dogs and moved to Highland Village. Helen has that inner passion for photography which is so refreshing in the sea of new, inexperienced, “want to make a quick buck” trend we see in this industry today. Ironically, photography has been a profession in her family for three generations. With a bachelor in fine art, she majored in sculpture and taught photography for years before opening her own portrait studio 22 years ago, printing in the dark room and shooting with the Hasselblad. She made the transition to the digital world and has maintained the standard of excellence which raises the bar for those who assume everything can be “fixed in photoshop”. She has remained passionately dedicated to her craft and understands the significance of recording family history

through photography. As you walk into her home studio, you’re delightfully amazed at the gallery of beautiful portraits displayed on her walls. She has an indoor studio, but the real show stopper is her beautifully landscaped back yard which strategically creates wonderful nooks and crannies, bridges and doorways for photographic posing. If you’re looking for a photographer who won’t disappoint, Helen Chouinard has the talent and wisdom sprinkled with her delightful sense of humor which sets her apart and makes the entire photography experience a wonderful memory. The result is timeless and priceless family heirlooms. “We were made to nurture. We were made to give.” This is Helen’s core philosophy and what drives this rare breed of artist. Her work is currently on display at Starbucks on FM 407 and Morriss Rd. You can find her on facebook and through her website: www.Helensphotography.com, or call her at 831.524.2721.

I may be a little late in reviewing this book, since it technically was published in November of 2010, but since I just discovered it I’ll share my thoughts. If you’re like me, you may have received this book as a gift and set it aside. My intentions

were to jump right in, but I found myself dreading the experience. I thought this book was about death, and since that hits a little too close to home, I decided I probably wasn’t ready for it just yet. When my daughter suggested I read it, insisting it wasn’t sad and depressing, but rather a fascinating account of a little boy’s experience through a life-threatening illness, I decided to give it a shot. I had been wrong. It wasn’t about death at all, but rather about joy and happiness and faith and family. I found myself engrossed in the story and eagerly anticipating each new chapter. I instantly became attached to the main character, a little boy named Colton. His description of heaven, in his no-nonsense childlike way, paints a perfect picture of what he experienced. You find yourself in that place, fascinated and amused as this young boy tries to describe things for which he often had no words. Heaven is For Real has created a buzz around the world. Whether you believe the story or not, or believe in Heaven or not, it’s worth the read. You will be uplifted by the family’s faith as they pray for the healing of their young son, and charmed by the boy’s frankness and childlike trust in what he saw.

If you haven’t yet discovered Swirl Bakery Cafe Takery Catering, make it a point to seek out this wonderful little bistro-style cafe, just waiting to become your next favorite place. The comfortable atmosphere immediately draws you in and beckons you to stay awhile. It’s a great place to catch up with old friends, bring the kids for a sweet treat, or meet clients for a meeting in a relaxed atmosphere. A keyboard player plays background music during lunch and the wi-fi allows you to camp out awhile and work if you choose. Featuring a creative menu of sandwich options, as well as homemade soups and a wide variety of salads, Swirl Bakery is sure to satisfy whatever your craving happens to be. I highly recommend the tomato basil soup and the original triple decker club, but it’s all yummy! Swirl Bakery is also open for dinner, and features food like your grandmother used to make it. How about mouth-watering fried chicken, handmade chicken pot pie, or hand breaded chicken fried steak to take you back to those simpler times? Or maybe the grilled salmon is more to your liking. Dinner is always worth the trip! In addition to lunch

And don’t forget the pies - the options are endless! If this weren’t enough to stir your taste buds, be sure to check out their “take out” counter, where you can purchase an entire meal to take home and feed the family. Choose from meat loaf, pot roast, King Ranch chicken, and beef burgundy, just to name a few. Great for rushed evenings when the whole family is scattered in all directions. One last thing. Swirl Bakery offers catering for groups of all sizes. Whether it’s a company meeting, family picnic, weddings, or your entire holiday meal, leave it in the hands of the professionals and enjoy your special occasion. I’ve used them many times. The menu is always fresh and unique, and never fails to satisfy the crowd. Helen Young, owner of The Tutoring Center, is a woman who never gave up on her dream of nurturing young minds. She is a gifted tutor and has opened a business

motivated from this love of helping children in such a special way. For years she worked in the business world climbing the corporate ladder to an executive position with a well known insurance agency; yet she never gave up her desire of tutoring. Recently she and her husband Tim opened The Tutoring Center in Flower Mound, which focuses on the core subjects of reading, writing and mathematics. TTC also offers online support for science, including physics and chemistry. Some things you should know about The Tutoring Center is that they teach both phonics and sight word recognition to readers. Classroom structure is especially helpful for children with short attention

spans, an ever growing obstacle in our fast paced society of instant gratification. The center offers test taking strategies, including the SAT and ACT tests. Each child’s academic level is assessed and the curriculum is centered around his/her needs, allowing for one-on-one time with the instructor and independent work time, all necessary components for a strong learning environment. It is pre-K through high school academic support all under one roof, from Helen and Tim Young, two of our bright and caring educators in our community. The Tutoring Center is conveniently located at 1121 Flower Mound Rd. You can call at 972.874.1999 or email them at [email protected].

Just about anyone who’s ever watched a child or grandchild go from the crib to kindergarten and beyond has uttered the phrase, “They grow up so fast.” Although you can’t really freeze a youngster’s precious moments in time, you can take steps to make sure that his or her journey to adulthood starts with a sound understanding of money, investments, and personal financial responsibility. The following activities will help. Count on Counting Your Change: Smart shopping might begin with a hunt for bargains, but it should end with a review of your transactions. To drive this message home, encourage your kids to unload the groceries and simultaneously compare price tags with the receipt. If they find a mistake, let them hold on to the refund. Play “The Stock Market Game™” : Get online and go to www.smg2000.org. There you’ll find “The Stock Market Game.” Sponsored by the Foundation for Investment Education, it lets kids in grades 4 through 12 assemble and monitor a hypothetical $100,000 portfolio for 10 weeks. Make a Matching Contribution:Want to motivate a child to save? Just offer to “match” a portion of each savings account deposit he or she makes. And don’t be afraid to set a few rules — for example, matching contributions can’t be spent on candy or pizza. Take Stock of Household Products: If your child is old enough to understand the concept of stocks and publicly traded companies, go through the house together and identify favorite items, such as computers and clothing. Then look up the manufacturer’s stock price and monitor it over time.© 2010 Standard & Poor’s Financial Communications. All rights reserved.

The kids are home from school and keeping a clean house seems next to impossible. You don’t have the time or want to take the time to clean up messes all day long. Here are five time-saving tips for quick summer-time clean ups:1. Schedule your cleaning at the same time each day. 2. Keep non-toxic cleaning products under each sink to grab and spritz where needed.

3. Take quick action on spills immediately before they dry rock-hard.4. Clean around the room once, never back tracking.5. Clean from top to bottom, so you don’t dirty what you just cleaned. Staying on top of the daily messes will keep the house clean as well as sanitized. Now sit down, relax, and enjoy your nice clean—for five minutes, until the kids walk in. I have been a franchise owner of Cartridge World for 6.5 years and own one of the 600 plus stores in the U.S. I am originally from New Hampshire, served in the US Army in Ger-many, obtained both an undergraduate and master’s degree in business and moved to the Dallas area in 1977. In 2002, I was honored as City Manager of the Year for Texas by 1000 of my peers while City Manager of South Padre Island. Experience has taught me that life is not supposed to be easy, it is not a free ride and

sometimes it is not fair. You need to believe in God, your family and yourself and respect others. You should work hard, do your best and try to accomplish something each day and Pray that the rest will take care of itself.

Many articles are written about home security and fire prevention, but I’ve seen very few addressing the measures one should take to insure

the security of the backyard pool. News of the recent deaths of twins at their grandparents’ pool made me stop and think a bit about how tragedies of this sort may be prevented and how the security industry addresses it. In my research I’ve found that most incidents involve young children just looking for some adventure in a neighbor’s yard. If this has been something you’ve thought about (and we all have at one time or another), I can suggest that we go back to security basics. Making the attractive nuisance not so attractive would be the logical answer. As is true with any type of security, outdoor lighting plays an important role. Light up that pool area with motion detector lights. Also related is that your decorative shrubbery and landscaping should be designed

so that the pool can easily be seen from the main house. Local ordinances dictate the requirement for fencing but you can also add a coded lock to the gate for entry. Go one step further and install cameras so that you can monitor the activity. There are various pool alarms available for both in and above ground pools and gates. There are even a few manufacturers that have a remote alarm that will alert you wherever you may be in the house. A quick internet search yielded some interesting offerings from companies such as Pooleye, Safety Turtle, Pool Patrol, Poolguard and I’m sure many more. As I have no actual knowledge of these companies or products, doing your own research and consulting with your trusted pool company would prove invaluable. By far the best method of pool safety is adult supervision and the proper education of the people that may use it, from family members and friends to the kids next door and their parents. Enjoy your summer and stay safe!

Good News! The Flower Mound Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce that after a comprehensive review, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce has awarded us with Accredited status. As of today, there are over 7000 Chambers of Commerce in the nation and of them only 233 are accredited. This prestigious honor puts us among the top 3% of Chambers nationwide. This past year, the Staff and the Accreditation Committee spent countless hours completing the Accreditation process. Our task: to demonstrate competency in 9 core areas ranging from finance to facilities. In 2011, we hired an independent accounting firm

to conduct a full financial audit. The result of our hard-work is evidenced by this impressive rating. We should all be extraordinarily proud of this milestone achievement. It was a true team effort.

This is the only national program that recognizes Chambers for their effective organizational procedures and community involvement. Accreditation allows us to renew, improve, and promote sound business practices, policies, and procedures.

Of the over 600 Chambers in the State of Texas, we are now one of 20 who are accredited!

“There are media reps...and then there is JaLynn West -- the one-woman editor/publisher dynamo of Our Community Magazine. The way that JaLynn goes about cultivating relationships with her customers is ex-traordinary. After dissecting marketing opportunities, exploring social media strategies, providing leads and contacts to enhance sales, the core-product of the publication -- the ad -- is eventually addressed and developed for the quarterly. While the magazine is the vehicle of her enterprise, when it comes right down to it, JaLynn West -- and her warm, sincere and enthusiastic approach to helping making one’s business successful -- who is the heart and soul of Our Community.” Gary Lane Marketing Director

Most families kept a few chickens in Flower Mound through the 1950’s. The Town is considering allowing a few backyard hens again. Many residents want a few backyard hens because they support a healthy lifestyle. They point out that chickens have less nega-tive impact than dogs and cats. Further, chickens control in-sects, weed the garden, fertilize, put themselves to bed at dusk, and provide fresh/healthy eggs for breakfast.

You’ve Been Snapped!

“Our Community Magazine is an A+ publication! My first ad I ran in the magazine resulted in four catering jobs. Thank you JaLynn and Lance for your tireless efforts and offering such a great marketing tool. I look forward to future advertising with OCM”. Sincerely, Mike Ramsey Rolling Smoke BBQ Catering and More

As the newest member of the writing group for the magazine, I had to stop and think about what I wanted to write about for my first article. I could go on for days about the promo-

tional products business but decided that on my first assignment I would impart some life les-sons about starting your own business. As a woman that came from the corporate world, I had to make a huge mental adjustment to being responsible for everything when I started out. It was exhilarating yet terrifying. I knew a lot of folks in the community but that didn’t mean business. I went to all kinds of meetings, networking groups, and even asked friends for leads. The one thing I learned along the way is not only do you grow your business, but you make friends in the oddest places. And some of those blossom into life-long friendships. You can still work with the people, but the more friends you make along the way, the more enriched your life will become.

The first two years of our business have been very good to me because of all the people that I have surrounded myself with and I know that I would not be where I am today without any of them. So when someone invites you to a business lunch, take the time to stop and have that extra cup of coffee and learn more about them and who they are for someday they may be a business partner or an extraordinary employee who just needed to see their value.
