A friend sent me an email with a story of Jesus having a conversation with Satan. Satan had just come back from earth and he was gloating because many on earth were falling into his net. Jesus was sad because he knew what Satan would do to them – send them to his lake of fire. Jesus took action: he offered himself to die on the cross in atonement for their sins.

The conversation did not happen but with what’s going on in the world today, one might think it did. Yes, the dev-il must be having fun. According to national statistics al-most 60 million potential babies in the US alone have been aborted since Roe vs Wade was passed in 1973. Many children of broken homes are being raised by single parents and terrorism seems to be the new norm in some countries.

We know God so loved the world that he sent his only Son to the world, not to condemn the world but to save it through him. St Paul summed it up when he said; “God demonstrates his own love towards us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”(Rom 5:8) The prophet Zephaniah describes how God loves us. “He will rejoice over you with gladness, he will renew you in his love, he will exult over you with loud singing!” (Zeph 3:17)

Take a look at yourself in the mirror. Ask yourself. What do I really see? Is this the face that delights God’s heart? Do I see the goodness that God created in me? Do I see the face of Jesus in me?

Don’t say, “Yuck, I see gray hair, eye bags, and wrinkles on my face!” Remember, God does not make junk. Don’t look with worldly eyes; you may not see God’s love for you. You have to look with your heart and you will see God’s creation, someone created in his own image and likeness.

What you see in the mirror is uniquely you because God created you uniquely. He loves you in your uniqueness, just as you are. You’ll see a new you, someone in the like-ness of Christ. When you experience God’s love, loving yourself and loving others become easy.

Be vigilant for the devil will do anything to distract you from Jesus. He knows once you become united with Christ his game plan for you is over.

St. Paul said this clearly; “Whoever is in Christ is a new creation: the old things have passed away; behold, new things have come” (2Cor 5:17)

May God’s blessing be with you!

Twenty-Eight Sunday in Ordinary Time Scripture Reflection By: Deacon Mar Isaiah 25:6-10, Philippians 4:12-14, 19-20, Mathew 22:1-14 _____________________________________________

In biblical times, one of the favorite im-ages of the fullness of God’s kingdom was a banquet. Today’s passage from first reading pro-vides a good example.

The prophet Isaiah pictures God’s king-dom as a grand banquet with rich food and choice wine hosted by God and all are invited.

In the Gospel, the parable of the wedding feast is about God’s invitation and our response. It cautions us first of the dangers of indifference. When the Father invites us to a relationship with His Son, we can exercise our freedom to accept or decline the invitation as though nothing has changed and no new demands have been placed on our lives.

The parable brings to our attention the dangers of resentment and denial. Many people fight the idea that we are all sinners in need of salvation. In such cases, the good news and its call for true repentance and for change in our way of life can seem like a threat to our happi-ness and our deepest desires for fulfillment in life. This can put us on the defensive and even provoke a negative and hostile response towards those who challenge us with the good news of Christ.

Finally, the parable warns us against false repentance and conversion. The man with-out the wedding garment accepted the invitation but his “yes” to the call of God was not carried out in his life. “Many are called but few are cho-sen”, says the Lord. The point is that all are called to the kingdom, but not all will be found worthy. Those deemed unworthy want the good things of the kingdom, but do not follow through in putting its demands into practice in their lives. Those found acceptable are those committed in directing their lives according to the Gospel. They clothe themselves in the garments of true repentance and Christ-like righteousness. They make the Lord the Shepherd of their lives.

St. Paul’s example indicates that at its best Christian life combines self-reliance, reli-ance on others and reliance on God. “I can do all things in Him who strengthens me.”

PROTECTING THE CHILDREN Beyond the myth of the ‘bathing suit’ rule In the past, child abuse prevention programs fo-cused on teaching children and young people that their “private body parts” are those parts of the body covered by a bathing suit. Teaching the con-cept of “total body safety” has become the latest practice. It is important for children to understand that their entire body is private. Parents should be watchful of adults who might be “grooming” a child by constantly tickling, kissing or hugging them. It is important to listen to a child and respect their wishes if they do not want to hug or kiss someone. The Act of Contrition By: Rev. Ronald Patrick Downtown Chapel Roman Catholic Church Portland, Oregon God alone changes our lives and forgives our sins. We may finally understand God’s true fidelity toward us when are challenged by our sinfulness and doubt. The act of contrition prayed most commonly by a penitent in the sacrament of rec-onciliation, reveals the healing God has already given us in Christ Jesus. These sacramental mo-ments of contrition flow the remorse and sorrow we all feel deep within our consciences. Contrition of the heart is reveled not in a prescribed formula, but by living lives of sinceri-ty compassion, and integrity. Remorse may bring us to utter silence when we realize our hard-hearted actions toward a friend. We may dis-cover tears of regret when we finally view the consequences of our callused responses to those we love. Honest contrition sometimes calls us to shout out our anger when we apprehend the in-justice of our actions in a failure to serve the poor. We may review our day and recite formu-las for contrition we memorized as children when fear locks up our hearts.

Saying an Act of Contrition alone in

one’s room or in the quiet of sacramental

confession gives expression to both sor-

row or sin and God’s mercy and bound-

The Lord God will wipe away the tears

from every face.
