Opportunities to support your Parish

In addition to Mass intentions for your loved ones you may remember them through the following memorial opportunities: · Sanctuary Flowers · Altar or Tabernacle Candles, or Sanctuary Lamp · Meditation Garden Remembrance Bricks · A gift of cash, securities, or other assets to OLMV.

Please remember Our Lady of

Mount Virgin in your estate planning:

The generous bequests of parishioners and friends are critical to fulfilling the mission of OLMV Parish. OLMV provides outreach and pastoral and spiritual support to many who live on the edge of poverty and loneliness. These bequests also support and the maintenance of our beautiful church and grounds. Remembering the Church in your estate planning says something special about what was meaningful to you in your lifetime; it is a way to ensure that the parish community you value will continue into the future; and it’s a way to leave a meaningful and important legacy to those who will come after you.

As always, thank you for your support of OLMV.

From the Desk of Father David

Father David, Father Louis, Father Peter, Deacon John T, Deacon John C, Deacon

Tom, Deacon Edgar, and our parish staff wish our parishioners a most blessed

and joyous New Year.

The evangelist St. Luke, author of the third Gospel and its sequel, the Acts of the Apostles, was not himself one of the Apostles. St. Luke never met Jesus. We know that he was a physician by profession, and that he be-came a companion and associate of St. Paul. According to pious tradition, St. Luke was a confidant of the Virgin Mary. Accordingly, he was in a good position to relate in his Gospel stories about the infancy and youth of Jesus. It is almost exclusively from St. Luke that we have the little we know about the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. One of the things that we learn from St. Luke’s Gospel is that Jesus was submissive to His parents. To un-derstand this is to understand a very significant dimension of Jesus’ Incarnation. Jesus became a human being, like us in all things but sin. In the very fact of His humanity Jesus can teach us a great deal about how we can live our lives in a way that conforms to the will of the Father. Jesus leads by example. He teaches in the prayer that He gave us that the Father’s will must be done, on earth as it is in heaven. He teaches us in His agony in the Garden of Gethsemane the importance of preferring the will of God to our own wills when He prayers, Father let this cup pass me by, but not as I will, as you will. Beyond being submissive to the will of the Father, Jesus also teaches us to respect lawful authority, even under circumstances when, except in the case of laws that clearly violate Christian morality, the will of that authori-ty may not agree with, or even be in conflict with, our own wills. And so, for instance, Jesus teaches that we must render unto Caesar that which is Caesar’s and unto God that which is God’s. At His trial, Jesus tells Pilate that Pi-late would have no authority over Him but for the fact that that authority was given to Pilate by God. And now we learn from St. Luke that Jesus was submissive to His parents. In this short verse, Jesus con-firms the importance of the family. The Church refers to the family as “the domestic church,” the church of the home. It is in the Christian home that children are reared in the Faith. It is the parents that are the primary evange-lists to their children. Catholic schools and religious education programs can only assist. Christian parents bear the primary responsibility for rearing their children and are answerable to Jesus to do so. In 2010 Pope Benedict XVI declared that “it is the family founded on the marriage between a man and a woman that can give children the greatest help.… [T]he maternal and paternal figures are complementary in the raising of children and the development of their personality and identity. It is therefore important that everything possible be done to enable them to grow up in a united and stable family. To this end, it is necessary to urge spouses never to lose sight of the profound reasons and sacramentality of the conjugal covenant and to strengthen it by listening to the word of God and by prayer, constant dialogue, reciprocal acceptance and mutual forgiveness.… [S]upportiong the family and promoting its true good, its rights, its unity and its stability is the best way to protect the rights and authentic needs of minors.”

PARISH REGISTRATION: In order to be considered a registered parishioner, an adult (persons 21 years of age or older) must complete and submit a registration form. These forms can be picked up at the parish office. Completed forms must be brought to the parish in person. Please remind young adults (family and friends) that they must be separately registered with the parish. Ordinarily, for Baptism, First Communion, Confirmation or Matrimony, or to receive a sponsorship eligibility certificate, persons must be registered and active members of OLMV.

ELIGIBILITY LETTERS FOR GODPARENTS AND SPONSORS: A person seeking a “sponsor letter” to serve as a godparent for the Sacrament of Baptism or a sponsor for the Sacrament of Confirmation must have received all three Sacraments of Initiation and be a Confirmed Catholic who is active in his or her parish and, if married, be in a valid, Catholic marriage. An “active” Catholic is understood to be a person who is registered, attends Mass regularly, and whose lifestyle is in keeping with the Catholic faith. They should ensure that their own school age children are attending Mass, are enrolled in religious education, and have received their sacraments.
