ALL SOULS INTENTIONS All Souls Day is November 2nd. In preparation for All Souls Day, the envelopes will be available at the Church entrances. Please return your All Souls Intention envelopes as soon as possible in order that we may place the intentions on the altar on ALL SOULS DAY and for the entire month of November, which is dedicated to the POOR SOULS IN PURGATORY. Please PRINT the names LEGIBLY because the names will be read before each Mass in November. We don’t want to “butcher” the names of your loved ones. CCD Corner The Feast day of Our Lady of Victories was celebrated in our CCD classes this past week. Mr. Fischer’s 4th grade class viewed a video on the Battle of Lepanto and all classes prayed a decade of the rosary and will continue to do so for the remainder of the month of October. We encourage all families to pray a decade of the rosary at home as well. Confirmation class will meet again on October 20th in the lower church. Confirmation students are reminded that they should be signing in the book each week when they attend Mass. Classes resume next Sunday and Monday October 20th and 21st.

Fr. Wojciech’s Corner

We just celebrated the great feast of Our Lady of Victories. I was so happy to see so many people attend. It was a true consolation and inspiration to think how Mary with the Rosary won the battle of Lepanto. She will contin-ue to assist us in our battles.

Last Sunday began a controversial Synod of Amazonia in Rome. Consid-ering the possible impact of it, I was really impressed by two readings recently: one was when Jesus sends 72 disciples. Even saying “the harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few”. He does not send enough disciples purposely - an interesting detail. And also, He says shortly after, PRAY to the Master of the harvest to send laborers to His harvest. WOW. PRAY!!

And then the gospel of Martha and Mary…Martha, Martha you worry for so much and are anxious about so much - only one thing is necessary. Are we an anxious church because we do not sit enough at the feet of Jesus like Mary?

No need to invent laborers. Amazing. Do I pray enough, do you pray enough? Let us pray for the Synod and even more for the turmoiled Church in Germany. Let us take advantage of this month dedicated to the Holy Rosary to pray and meditate on the mysteries of the Rosary = PRAY MORE.

There will be a Memorial Mass for Rev. Jerry Ikalowych on Saturday, October 19 at 1PM here at OLV. Rev. Ikalowych has visited our parish on different occasions. He was ordained a priest of the Catholic Byzantine rite, and was the father of parishioner Donna Hansen. May his soul RIP.

Let us be this month like MARY the mother of Jesus, obedient follower even at His feet on the cross - ALWAYS “at his feet”.

SPIRITUAL EXCERPT “In the case of an intrinsically unjust law, such as a law permitting abortion or euthanasia, it is therefore never licit to obey it, or to take part in a propa-ganda campaign in favor of such a law, or vote for it.”

POPE JOHN PAUL II - 73, Gospel of Life

JUST A REMINDER The Fridays of the year, outside of Lent, are designated as days of penance, but each individual may substitute for the traditional abstinence from meat some other practice of voluntary self-denial as penance.

“Are you Aware?” We are called as Catholics to defend the helpless and the defenseless. Local 40 days for life efforts are in full swing! Members of OLV parish in support of 40 days for Life, go to the Women’s Choice Abortion facility located at 10 Zabriskie St, Hackensack, NJ every Tuesday afternoon at 2pm to pray the rosary for 1 hour to encourage women seeking abortion who feel there is no other option to reconsider. Please join us - if another time is better for you, volunteers are welcome and needed for many other time slots. Contact Laura Scott 201-895-4456 for further information. There is a NJ Right to Life raffle this month to support the continuing work to change hearts and minds in regards to Abortion, euthanasia, the death penalty. Please plan to purchase your tickets after Mass during the weekend of October 26/27 when OLV members will have them available at the doors. Array of Hope Gala benefit dinner is on October 23! Abby Johnson (subject of the amazing movie “Unplanned”) is a featured speaker. Don’t miss this amazing evening! OLV Life Committee meets each month on the 2nd Monday at 7:30pm for 1 hour. Be a part of OLV’s group devoted to Supporting LIFE. Next meet-ing is October 14. Check our corner each week for news and local/ region-al events and make the time to stand up for LIFE.

Prayer for the Safety of Soldiers Almighty and eternal God, those who take refuge in You will be glad and forever will shout for joy. Protect these soldiers as they discharge their duties. Protect them with the shield of Your strength and keep them safe from all evil and harm. May the power of Your love enable them to return home in safety, that with all who love them, they may ever praise You for Your loving care. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

A little humor … Deaf Wife A man feared his wife wasn't hearing as well as she used to, and he thought she might need a hearing aid. Not quite sure how to approach her, he called the family doctor to discuss the problem. The doctor told him there is a simple informal test the husband could perform to give a better idea about her hearing loss. Here's what you do," said the doctor. "Stand about 40 feet away from her, and in a nor-mal conversational speaking tone see if she hears you. If not, go to 30 feet, then 20 feet, and so on until you get a response." That evening, the wife is in the kitchen cooking dinner, and he was in the den. He says to himself, "I'm about 40 feet away, let's see what happens. "Then in a normal tone he asks, 'Honey, what's for dinner?" No response. So the husband moves closer to the kitchen, about 30 feet from his wife and repeats, "Honey, what's for dinner?" Still no response. Next he moves into the dining room where he is about 20 feet from his wife and asks, "Honey, what's for dinner?" Again he gets no response. So, he walks up to the kitchen door, about 10 feet away. "Honey, what's for dinner?" Again there is no response. So he walks right up behind her. "Honey, what's for dinner?" "Ralph , for the FIFTH time, CHICKEN!" If lawyers are disbarred and clergymen defrocked, doesn't it then follow that electricians can be delighted, musicians denoted, cowboys deranged, models deposed, tree surgeons debarked and dry cleaners depressed?

Pray for Those in the Military Ten Things to Do Before Mass Say hello to the ushers who greet you when you enter Church. Make the Sign of the Cross with holy water. Genuflect to Jesus in the Tabernacle before entering the pew. Kneel with your eyes closed and say hello to Jesus. Take a deep breath and relax from outside stuff. Sit down, open the missal, and find today’s Mass. Read today’s readings, then pick out the main idea. Think what the priest might focus on in his homily. Pray the special prayers elsewhere in the missal. Get ready to sing the opening hymn.

10 Reasons to Stay Until the End of the Mass (which is after the final note is sung if there is music)

Give God time to give you some good ideas. Don’t waste your special time with Jesus. Talk to Jesus now that you have received Him. Pray by name for the people you love. Make a good moment last. Give your worries and cares to the Lord. Practice being more calm and less stressed. It is not polite to eat and run. Your priest and neighbors want to say hello. We have to give one another good example.

Think about It Money will buy a bed, but not sleep. Money will buy books, but not brains. Money will buy food, but not an appetite. Money will buy finery, but not beauty. Money will buy a house, but not a home. Money will buy medicine, but not health. Money will buy luxuries, but not culture. Money will buy amusement, but not happiness. Money will buy one a religion, but not salvation.

We do not have it the worst. There is always somebody in a worse situation.

Respect Life Families with lots of children are no longer considered examples of generosity, but rather irresponsibility. (Our culture says that) children with severe disabilities are not special angels sent to us by God, but drains on the economy; better that they were not born. And the elderly are burdens. But if we succeed in pushing away everyone who is dependent, then we're left with ourselves, our ego-centric, sin-rationalizing, defensive, irritable and vain selves. If we never learn to give till it hurts, till the painful reality that we're not the center of the universe sinks in, we will fail at marriage, at parenthood, at citi-zenship, even at simple neighborliness. -William E. The Rosary, when it is prayed in an authentic way, not mechanical and superficial but profoundly, it brings, in fact, peace and reconcilia-tion. It contains within itself the healing power of the Most Holy Name of Jesus, invoked with faith and love at the center of each ‘Hail Mary’.- Benedict XVI

Christian? A man was being tailgated by a stressed-out woman on a busy boulevard. Suddenly, the light turned yellow, just in front of him. He did the right thing, stopping at the crosswalk, even though he could have beaten the red light by accelerating through the intersection. The tailgating woman was furious and honked her horn, screaming in frustration as she missed her chance to get through the intersection, dropping her cell phone and makeup. As she was still in mid-rant, she heard a tap on her window and looked up into the face of a very serious police officer. The officer ordered her to exit her car with her hands up. He took her to the police station where she was searched, finger printed, photographed, and placed in a holding cell. After a couple of hours, a policeman approached the cell and opened the door. She was escorted back to the booking desk where the arresting officer was waiting with her personal effects. He said, "I'm very sorry for this mistake. You see, I pulled up behind your car while you were blowing your horn, flipping off the guy in front of you, and cussing a blue streak at him. I noticed the 'What Would Jesus Do' bumper sticker, the 'Choose Life' License plate holder, the 'Follow Me to Sunday-School' bumper Sticker, And the chrome-plated Christian fish emblem on the trunk, Naturally…I assumed you had stolen the car." When reciting the Rosary, the important and meaningful moments of salvation history are relived. The various steps of Christ’s mission are traced. With Mary the heart is oriented toward the mystery of Jesus. Christ is put at the centre of our life, of our time, of our city, through the contemplation and meditation of his holy mysteries of joy, light, sorrow and glory. - BENEDICT XVI

Prayer to St. Ge rude Our Lord dictated the following prayer to St. Gertrude the Great to release 1,000 Souls from Purgatory each time it is said.

"Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the Masses said throughout the world today, for all the holy souls in Purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal church, those in my own home and within my family. Amen."

St. Gertrude's life was the mystic life of the Cloister – a Benedictine nun. She meditated on the Passion of Christ, which many times brought a flood of tears to her eyes. She did many penances and Our Lord appeared to her many times. She had a tender love for the Blessed Virgin and was very devoted to the suffering souls in Purgatory. She died in 1334. Her feast day is November 16th.

I am Thankful For the wife who says it’s hot dogs tonight

because she is home with me, and not out with someone else.

For the husband who is on the sofa being a couch potato, because he is home with me and not out at the bars.

For the teenager who is complaining about doing dishes because it means she is at home, not on the streets.

For the taxes I pay because it means I am employed.

For the mess to clean after a party because it means I have been surrounded by friends.

For the clothes that fit a little too snug because it means I have enough to eat.

For my shadow that watches me work because it means I am out in the sunshine.

For a lawn that needs mowing, windows that need cleaning and gutters that need fixing because it means I have a home.

For all the complaining I hear about the government because it means we have freedom of speech.

For the parking spot I find at the far end of the parking lot because it means I am capable of walking

and I have been blessed with transportation.

For my huge heating bill because it means I am warm.

For the lady behind me in church who sings off key because it means I can hear.

For the pile of laundry and ironing because it means I have clothes to wear.

For the weariness and aching muscles at the end of the day because it means I have been capable of working hard.

For the alarm that goes off in the early morning hours because it means I am alive.
