Sunday, December 18, 2016 - The Fourth Sunday of Advent
This Sunday, at the 10:00 a.m. Mass, those adult catechumens who are preparing for Baptism and Confirmation and those candidates who are preparing for entrance into full communion in the Catholic Church, will take part in the first ceremony - The Rite of Election - leading up to Holy Saturday’s Easter Vigil. At the Easter Vigil their baptism or rite of entrance into the church will take place. Preliminary ceremonies, called Scrutinies, will take place from time to time beginning now and going right through the Lent season. There are two candidates for the sacrament of Baptism, and four candidates for entrance into the church. This ceremony is part of what the church calls the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, commonly called RCIA. This is the ordinary path for converts to come into the church. All through the year, we will be praying for these catechumens and candidates as they prepare to come into the church.
Confessions in preparation for Christmas will be held this week on Thursday afternoon, from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., and on Friday from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. All three of our priests will be hearing confessions during these times.
Church decorating for Christmas will take place on Friday, December 23, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the Basilica. Anyone who would like to help with decorating for Christmas is invited to assist. Young parishioners, under the age of 15 should be accompanied by an adult.
Masses for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day will be as follows:
♦ Saturday, December 24 4:00 p.m. Family Mass 6:00 p.m. Vigil Mass
♦ Sunday, December 25 12:00 a.m. Midnight Mass 8:00 a.m. 10:00 a.m. 12:00 Noon
Please note that there will be no 4:30 p.m. Mass on Christmas Day.
May Jesus bless you and Our Lady of Victory watch over you.
Father Paul

Sacrament of Baptism: Our Parish offers a special Pre-Baptism preparation program for parents who desire to share their faith with their children. Parents-to-be must attend this class prior to the birth of their child. Baptisms are usually scheduled two times each month. Call the Rectory to register for classes. Godparents must be Confirmed and practicing Catholics. Non-parishioners are required to have a Letter of Recommendation to serve as a sponsor.
Sacrament of Marriage:
To be married in the Basilica, you must be an active parishioner for at least 9 months prior to setting a date. Engaged couples should contact the pastor before making other wedding arrangements. Couples are required to attend a Pre-Cana Conference, or equivalent pre-marriage preparation program.
Letters of Recommendation:
Recommendations to act as sponsors for Baptism or Confirmation can be issued only to registered members of Our Lady of Victory Parish who have received the Sacrament of Confirmation, attend Mass and receive Holy Communion regularly, have their children attending a Catholic school or Religious Education class. If married, the marriage must be in conformity with the regulations of the Catholic Church.
Devotions:
Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament begins immediately after the 12:10 p.m. Mass in the Basilica on Fridays and concludes with Benediction at 5:00 p.m.
First Friday:
On the eve of the First Friday of each month there are confessions from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. Mass is celebrated at 7:30 p.m. on First Friday.
Care of the Sick:
Please notify the rectory office for a visit to any family member who is sick, in the hospital or confined to home. Regular home Communion visits are usually on the First Friday of the month by a priest, deacon, or minister of the Eucharist.
Tours:
To schedule a tour of Our Lady of Victory Basilica, please contact Dianne Bosinski, Tours & Basilica Programs by email at [email protected] or by phone at (716) 828-9424.
Summary of the Readings Fourth Sunday of Advent
As Christmas draws near, Advent’s scriptures lure us into a world of dreams, signs, wonders, and the miracle of the virgin birth. Too often we allow the great stories of our faith, the ones that are most familiar, simply to wash over us. Today’s Gospel account of the events leading up to the birth of the Lord reads like a present-day soap opera. Yet Joseph’s courage, even in the midst of what must have been an incredibly confusing time, provides a model for us. Each week, we are summoned by God to embrace the way of goodness and truth through the proclamation of God’s holy word. Like Joseph, we are called to do as the Lord commands us. As we stand at the threshold of Christmas, let us have the courage to be open to whatever it is that the Lord will require of us as we celebrate the miracle of Bethlehem. Copyright © J. S. The Traveling Chalice
Would you like to host the “Traveling Chalice” in your home to promote vocations to the priesthood and religious life?
Father Sam invites families with school-aged (including college-aged) children still living at home, to bring his personal chalice home for a week to help promote vocations through brief prayer each evening with your family.
The week begins with the presentation of the chalice at the end of a Saturday evening or Sunday Mass, and may be concluded with Father Sam celebrating a Mass in your home on the following Friday evening. Please contact Father Sam at the rectory at 716-828-9428 or [email protected] for more information or to sign –up.
Vocation Thought Fourth Sunday of Advent
Today we hear that Jesus’ coming into our world and all of the love he poured out for us, through much sacrifice, was done in obedience to the Father’s will. Remember that it may be God’s will that you be a priest, or a religious sister or brother. If so, will you follow Jesus’ example of faithfulness? If God is calling you to a Church vocation, call Father Andrew Lauricella at 716-847-5535. You can also check out the “Priest of the Month” stories on our website at www.buffalovocations.org.
