The HagaddahThe word hagaddah means "a telling" and is the name given to the text used to navigate waythe various rites and rituals of the Passover Seder. One of the most central mitzvot(commandments) of Passover is the directrive to tell the story of the Exodus to your children(Exodus 13:8) and provides us with the inspiration for our annual "telling" and retelling.

It is our hope that this hagaddah will enable you, your family and friends to create a Pesachexperience that will be both meaningful and memorable.

We thank the Progressive Jewish Cultural Fund for their support ofthis significant ligirtucal resources and invite you to share it withfamily and friends.

The Search

On the evening before Passover, gather the household together and recite thefollowing blessing before searching for all remain chametz (leven).

Blessed are you, Eternal our God, Ruler of the Universe, who made us holy with thecommandments and commanded us concerning the removal of chametz.

Once the search is complete, recite the following declaration which symbolically andspiritually nullifies all unknown chametz and relinquishing it from your ownership.

All leaven or anything leavened which is in my possession, which Ihave neither seen nor removed, and about which I am unaware, shall

be considered nullified and ownerless as the dust of the earth.

The Seder TableTo celebrate Seder you must prepare a few things. On the table you need:

A copy of this Haggadah for each participantA pitcher of water, a bowl and a towelA small dish of salt waterThree unbroken sheets of Matza and a special cover in which you will putthem. If you do not have a ready-made cover, four unfolded cloth napkins willwork well.A special wine glass (filled) for EliyahuA special wine glass for the leader for Kiddush is nice but not requiredA wine glass for each personIf your chairs are hard, pillows are a nice touch

You need a Seder plate. If you do not have a specially made plate, any large, attractiveplate will do.

1)" ©rŸex §f" - z’roa- a roasted chicken bonewith most of the meat removed. This willrepresent the Passover offering. It willnot be eaten.

2) "dvi ¥A" - baitzah- a hard-boiled egg,representing the festival offering.3) "xŸexn" - maror - grated horseradishand/or romaine lettuce, for use as the"bitter herbs".4) "z ¤qŸ §x£g" - charoset - a paste made ofapples, pears, nuts and wine. We'll bedipping the bitter herbs in this.5) "q ©t §xM" - carpas - a bit of vegetable,such an onion or potato.

6) "z ¤x¤f£g" - chazeret - more bitter herbs, for use in the matzah-maror sandwich.

HavdalahHavdalah is celebrated on Saturday night only prior to the lighting of the festival

candles and the beginning of the seder.

Fill your Havdalah cup to the brim, to the point that the wine actually spills over, andlift it into the cupped fingers of your right hand. Light the braided Havdalah candle.The introduction to the Havdalah consists of nine joyful biblical verses which set thetone for a hopeful and joyous week to come.

Wine

Now we raise the cup of wine to sanctify the moment. We cannot touch time, so as onall joyous occasions, we use wine.

Spices

On Shabbat we each possess an “added soul.” Now that this extra measure of vitalityand spirituality departs from us, we rejuvenate ourselves by smelling spices - smellbeing the most spiritual of the five senses. We recite the special blessing thankingGod for creating pleasant smelling plants, and the diversity that they represent.

Light

The midrash tells us that Adam and Eve first discovered, benefited from, and thankedGod for fire upon the close of the first Shabbat. For us, too, it is the first night of theweek and the time for us to thank God for the gift of fire, without which our nightswould be dark, gloomy and cold. We use a braided candle with multiple wicks, torepresent the multiple types and uses of fire that we enjoy. We recite the blessing oflight as we anticipate all that it might bring.

Separation

Now it is time for the Havdalah itself - the blessing that defines the separation of theholy from the everyday. As we recite this blessing we say farewell to the Shabbat thatwas and welcome the possibility of the week to come.

The SederPassover is all about freedom and celebration, but that does not mean we can go crazyand do whatever we want. Actually, Passover is one of the most organised and plannedcelebrations in the Jewish calendar, and each year we experience and celebrate ourfreedom by following a sequence of fifteen defined and ordered steps. We call it theSeder or "Order."

The fifteen steps are:

Here I am, ready to perform the mitzvah of the first cup of wine and dedicate thiswhole evening “to telling the story of the miracles and wonders that were performedfor our ancestors in Egypt on the night of the 15th of the month of Nisan” more that3,200 years ago. This is what the Torah commands us: “Remember the day of yourExodus from Egypt”.

We were slaves to Pharaoh in Egypt, but God took us out of there with a mighty handand an outstretched arm. Had not God taken our fathers out of Egypt, then we, ourchildren and grandchildren would still be enslaved to Pharaoh in Egypt. Even if we allwere wise, and perceptive, experienced, and versed in Torah, it would still be our dutyto tell about the Exodus from Egypt. Once we were slaves NOW we are free people.

The wise child asks: "What is the meaning of these rules and laws which God hascommanded us?" We answer this child by teaching them the laws of passover frompreparing the seder all the way to the conclusion of the meal when we eat theafikomen.

The wicked child asks: "What does this Seder mean to you?" By the words "to you" thechild implies that this Seder is only for you. This child does not believe that there isanything new to be learned. We answer this child by telling that we hold a Seder toremind us of how we all were once slaves in Egypt, and how we are now grateful to befree.
