A flash of perspective If summer storms make you or a loved one

nervous, the perspective one mom offered

her young son might help.

Though lightning can be harmful, God

created it for good: The powerful

electricity converts unusable nitrogen to

nitrate, which plants need for growth and

human bodies use to produce proteins.

The boy was still uncertain, so Mom

continued. “Did you know there’s lightning in

heaven?”(See the description of John’s

vision in Revelation 4:5.)

“And nothing in heaven can hurt,” said the

boy, catching on.

Mom added, “Plus, lightning reminds me that

Jesus is coming. Matthew (24:27, NIV) says,

‘As lightning that comes from the east is

visible even in the west, so will be the

coming of the Son of Man.’”

This summer, as lightning brightens the sky,

reassure yourself — or a child — of

lightning’s purpose and wonder.

Lightning,” Family Time Story Devotions

PASTOR TONY SHARES ABOUT HIS RECENT TRIP TO JAPAN………..

“Are you okay?” asks Megan, 15, the youngest of seven high school students Tony Durante is chaperoning in Japan. She notices that Durante is quiet, downcast and melancholy as he lines up the group’s suitcases in the hall of the El Inn in Kyoto in preparation for the 7,000 mile flight back to America. It is 8 a.m. June 16

th, the last day of a very successful week-long

Student Ambassador trip to Miyazu, the sister city of Delray Beach, Florida.

Sisters of Delray Beach, Inc. has biennially selected local high school students to send to Miyazu since 2001. Students Stephanie Altamirano, Ashley Backus, Joshua Bowes, Rebecca Lepp, Megan O’Connor, Neissa Philemon and Dylan Tran were chosen for the 2018 tour. In a coastal town on the Japan Sea the youth participate in home stay and the daily school life of youth like themselves for four days. The trip concludes with two days in Kyoto, Japan’s historic and cultural capital sightseeing at famous, centuries old sites. The seven students spent nine months in orientation doing fundraisers, learning about Japan and the language and about the City of Delray Beach prior to their departure on June 8

th.

Although Sister of Delray Beach, Inc. is unaffiliated with any church, its student ambassador program is a personal mission for Durante. Over the years it has allowed for students and their families of different or no faith backgrounds in the ambassador program and in Japan to develop a relationship with a Christian pastor. Durante shares his faith during his home stay with his hosts Mr. and Mrs. Okamoto, Buddhists who reside in Miyazu. He spoke at the farewell party on his group’s final evening in Miyazu and related his experience to Mark 3:31-35 when Jesus visited someone’s home and found an adoptive family in the crowd that had gathered there to hear him. Durante, motioning to all present at the party and then to Mrs. Okamoto, said how the people of Miyazu had become his brother, sister and mother during the tour.

When it was time to return to the U.S. on June 16 Durante was overcome with emotion as he realized the mission was concluding—the culmination of months of preparation, sleepless nights and day-long vigils minding the students in Japan was completed. The students had made him proud in how they applied manners that Durante had taught them in orientation, being respectful of their hosts, using Japanese phrases, politely trying exotic dishes that they were served. The success was most evident when a local asked Durante about his students. As he began to respond, Megan answered for herself in perfect Japanese! Co-chaperone Nancy King agreed with Durante that the student ambassadors represented the City of Delray Beach well among the people of Miyazu.
