Strange Summer

This is my 24th summer of youth ministry, but I feel like a rookie. No camps, no mission trips, and no bus driving makes things very different and has sent us all back to the drawing board. We were quickly reminded that amidst all of the changes, our mission is still mostly the same: share Jesus (not germs) with students.

While our approach is smaller, less program-oriented, and involves going at a slower pace, we are still striving to be the (sanitized) hands and feet of Jesus. I miss the trips where students serve joyfully. I miss hearing large groups of teens singing praises to God wholeheartedly. I miss seeing the excitement in a kid’s eyes when I ask if they want to stop at Buc-ee’s and then immediately seeing their disappointment when I say, “bet you do!” as the Buc-ee’s sign fades in the distance behind us.

However, I’ve found joy in this strange summer. Without all the logistics of large programs, I have more time to sit and talk with students. I ask about their life, their goals and dreams, and their Spiritual journey. We spend time praying together and discussing Scripture. I’m getting better at badminton. I’m enjoying a lot of family time, a rarity in the summer. I’m slowing down more to reflect and see God in the cool of the morning (well…cooler than 3pm).

Jeremiah 18:6 says, “Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand.” I am asking God to change me for the better and to mold me into who He wants me to be. I pray this for you as well. How is God changing you through this time? I hope that you and I will become more like Jesus, shining His light and sharing His love with everyone.

How have you been spending your time? “Aaron and I have this unique perspective of the city of Houston…we look at the skyline every day. Many times, my heart has begged God to protect the people of this city. Through these months, Aaron’s schedule stayed constant, often even busier, and I am okay alone or with others, but I missed Friendship School and MCOC kids

terribly and had sad times to grow through. When we had eve-nings alone, we played the piano or guitar, and we went on a few Texas history drives in May. We were able to see my parents, our grown children and our closest friends, and every minute with others was like a drink of water during a marathon. We love every one of you at MCOC! -The Deister Family

How have you been spending your time? “We invested the first two months in time spent together--worship, exercise and entertainment. This has been the greatest blessing, knowing that we can enjoy all of life’s stages together. In May we began hosting different couples each Sunday night for food and worship. We have grown closer to our neighbors, especially the family across the street. Their young boys like to come over and help us with our projects. We are planning to have a big barbecue block party for many of the neighbors on our street. We lean on Hebrews 12:1-2 for motivation, a reminder to us that we are not alone and to pray for those that are. We have learned the contentment that Paul references in Philippians 4:12. And we pray…” -The Gordon Family
