At age 18, I saw aposter of a majes-tic looking eagle,

wings spread, a mountainrange behind and a bot-tom caption ... “All Americans are bornfree but many sell their liberty cheap. Forthose who don’t, the Eagle is their sym-bol.”

Eagle watchers are best served bycruising 14 areas along the Mississippiand Illinois rivers from the Chain ofRocks bridge to a point a little north ofLouisiana, Missouri. You’ll want towear layered clothing accentedwith binoculars.

Plan your viewing time to accommo-date the eagles feeding schedules, usuallybetween the hours of sunrise and 11 AM.Be sure to look for what veteran eaglewatchers call “baseballs in the trees” (dueto the eagles white head),

Bring an extra dose of patience.Eagles move about in their own time. Also, new eagle watchers should be awareof the Eagle Protection Act in combina-tion with the Criminal FinesImprovement Act of 1987 prohibitingpossession of anything eagle, from a deadbody to a mere feather. Instead, just lis-ten for the shrill, high pitched, twitteringcry eagles make and be happy with view-

ing or picture taking. Photo enthusi-asts are encouraged to use a tripod,

telephoto lens and a film ratingof 400 ASA, or the equivalentwith a digital camera.

Eagles can also beviewed 363 days a year, 8 to 5at the World Bird Sanctuary

in Valley Park, Missouri as wellas the Alton Visitor’s Center inAlton, Illinois.

The New Year inspires us all to makebig plans for better fitness. MostNew Year’s resolutions focus on

weight loss and health-related improvements, yet on average only 20% of us are able tomake good on our promises to ourselves.

Maybe we try to change too much in ourroutines too quickly, or maybe we just expecttoo much. But whatever the reasons, we allknow how difficult it is to maintain a fitnessstrategy beyond the first month or two ofour yearly resolutions.

This year, consider making just a fewsimple changes in your normal routine.Little changes add up to noticeable improve-ments in both your attitude about fitness andthe way you feel about your body.

Whether you want to lose a few poundsor just develop better health habits, here aresome tips that may help. Many you’ve heardbefore, but if you incorporate only two orthree into your routine you will be making apositive change.

1TAKE THE STAIRSI take the elevator even when it’s just afloor or two, and I’m not alone. Only

about 6% of people use the stairs in publicbuildings. It’s a habit I’m going to break thisyear. Look for the stairway and make a con-scious effort to use it whenever you can.

2Lose the TV!According to a study published by theAnnals of Behavioral Medicine, people

who lost at least 10% of their body weightand kept it off for five years or more hadfewer TV’s in their homes than overweightpeople. (Maybe we could just move ourTV’s around every day for exercise?)

3Vacuuming burns 105 calories in ahalf-hour. Dusting burns 75 and shov-eling snow uses 105. Remote control

clicking? None. Put on some music and embarrass your

kids by moving and grooving as you do yourhousework.

If you want to see how many calories youburn according to your weight and whattypes of activities you do, go to www.health-status.com and use their “Calories BurnedCalculator”.

4Walk 300 Steps a DayI wouldn’t recommend counting aloud;you can get a pedometer. Park far away

from store entrances and you’ll also eliminatethe stress of losing your car in the lot. It’ll bethe one waaayyy out there. Take walks –evenshort ones –and know you’re doing some-thing good for yourself.

5Keep Moving at WorkIf you have a desk job, you don’t haveto stay idle. Move your legs back and

forth while you’re sitting or tap your toes.Make it a habit to stretch often; get up andmove around when you can. Consider ashort walk around the parking lot or build-ing during lunch.

6Always Stay Cool!Being a bit chilly can help burn calo-ries. And being too warm leads to

naps. Go outside and move around in thecooler air. Stay active regardless of the tem-perature.

7Give Yourself a BreakIf you’re like me, you’re tempted to giveup when you falter in your plans to be

healthier. That large order of Wendy’s fries, while delicious, won’t help you get back ontrack.

Know that you’ll stray from your resolu-tions, and wake up each day ready to tryagain. Habits take time to develop, andnobody’s perfect.

2014 can be the year you make somesmall changes toward a better, healthierlifestyle. Make your resolutions ones you cantruly keep, and keep working toward yourgoals.

Any mother can understand the desperation of seeing their child inpain. Some can feel the sorrow of not being able to provide adequatecare for him; financial constraints, transportation limitations. Even

the emotional paralysis of not knowing where to turn. Then, a letter, email or phone call reaches Wings of Hope. This non-sec-

tarian, non-racial, non-political organization based in Chesterfield soars intoaction. Research is done, a plan is developed and a way to help is implement-ed.

Wings of Hope finds help in the family’s area, gets them there, and pro-vides all the necessary logistics and resources to get them assistance they couldnever have attained on their own.

A woman needs life-saving surgery for a rare disease—the only hospitalthat can help is across the country. Wings of Hope arranges for the trip andmedical care, provides hotel, food, transportation…and even sends along aCertified Airborne Nurse to accompany and stay with her through theprocess.

Wings of Hope is an all-volunteer charity with 157 bases in 47 countries(2012) and a task force of over 3,000 people spread around the world; morethan 600 at the headquarters alone.

Through worldwide efforts as well as their local Medical Relief and AirTransport (MAT) Program, this Nobel-Peace-Prize-nominated charity worksto afford changes in the world that will bring peace and hope to those whoneed it most. MAT is the only free Air Ambulance in the world that operates24/7.

Begun in 1962 by four St. Louis business executives, Wings of Hope hascompleted thousands of small and huge missions to stabilize impoverishedcountries, improve the quality of life for children and families in crisis andhelp build humanitarian bridges—through practical, common-sense steps thatwill eventually give the recipients a way to help themselves.

They do not accept any government money; 90%-100% of the privatedonations they receive go directly to alleviate immediate suffering wherever itis needed.

Little more than a dozen board members and President Doug Clementskeep things humming at Wings: making calls, finding solutions, using creativethought to solve often complex problems through patience and a sense ofmoral grace.

Projects Wings of Hope are tackling are as varied as the world’s needs dictate:• A tribe in the Amazon needs baby chickens and garden seed to help sus-

tain life to its families.• Women in India are trained to run small businesses and gain health sup-

port to help them become more self-reliant.• Children throughout the Midwestern USA who suffer major birth defects

and have no resources for transportation or medical care are provided forthrough the Medial Air Transport at Wings of Hope.

So, no matter how complex the problem, no matter what the need is –they do their absolute best to solve the situation.

Doug Clements eloquently describes the reasons forWings of Hope and its efforts:

“Every child, every person, has value. Each of them formssmall ripples in the fabric of the world. Those small rippleswill combine with others and a huge wave results that maywash away agony and suffering for many others. Whether that person is in some far away corner of the worldor right here in our own backyard. We must respond whenwe hear their plea for help. This is what Wings of Hopedoes.”

Contact Wings of Hope to arrange a monetary or supplydonation. Also consider a membership, set up a plannedgiving program or offer your unique skills as a volunteer.

See their website for immediate needs.

Comparing Wine Types •• SSaauuvviiggnnoonn BBllaanncc vvss.. FFuummee BBllaanncc:: These

are the same grape. Sauvignon has citrusand grapefruit characteristics. Usuallymedium to high in acidity. Fume has thesame characteristics except it's aged in oakbarrels. This gives the wine a tint of wood.

•• PPiinnoott GGrriiggiioo vvss.. PPiinnoott GGrriiss:: These are thesame grape. Many wine people refer toPinot Grigio as Italian in origin. Pinot Grisorigin is every other place except Italy.

•• CChhaabblliiss is a French Chardonnay.•• RReedd BBuurrgguunnddyy is a French Pinot Noir.•• SShhiirraazz vvss.. SSyyrraahh:: This is also the same grape. Shiraz is referred

to the wine whose origin is Australia. Syrah is from every othercountry. Australian style of Shiraz is very fruit forward. Syrah,in general, is very earthy and dryer than Shiraz. The way thewine is made brings out the different flavor profiles.

•• SSyyrraahh vvss.. PPeettiittee SSiirraahh:: Two completely different grapes that pro-duce different wines. Petite Sirah is so dark it's almost black. There is also a slight smell of concord grapes. Petite Sirah ismuch bigger than Syrah. It is the classic "teeth stainer."

•• "Meritage" is a name from California. It refers to an AmericanBordeaux blend. The roots of this word is California by nature, not French. Remember, it rhymes with heritage.
