The High Appeals court upheld the jail terms

issued in the case involv-ing public employees at the General Directorate of Traf-fic who received bribes in return for fixing the results of driving exams.

Two employees at the General Directorate of Traf-fic are said to have been re-ceiving bribes in order to allow the driving licence ap-plicants to pass, regardless of their driving proficiency.

The first defendant re-ceived seven years behind bars, while the second sus-pect was given six months in prison. Five other de-fendants are implicated in the case, all of whom are Asians.

They received jail sen-tences ranging between one year and three years behind bars each. All of them will be deported from the King-dom once they serve their jail time.

According to court files, one of the public servants was responsible for sched-uling test dates, while the other was an examiner.

They both worked hand in hand to ensure those who paid the bribes will be test-ed by the first defendant. They were getting the cus-tomers from the third de-fendant, who was offering his countrymen the oppor-tunity to pay BD300 to pass the driving exam.

Their arrangements were exposed after an Asian woman rejected the offer, and reported them to the police.

“He told me to pay BD300 and I will get my driving licence while disregarding my performance in the test,” the woman said.

Call to take health measures seriously

Even after getting the vaccine, strictly adhere to precautionary measures: Health authorities

• Full compliance helps prevent people from spreading COVID-19, and from being infected themselves

TDT | Manama

The “spike” in the num-ber of coronavirus active cases is more often than

not a direct consequence of in-dividuals not following public health measures.

So to keep one self and the entire community safe against COVID-19, the National Med-ical Taskforce for Combating the Coronavirus has been con-sistently and tirelessly advising the public to strictly adhere to health guidelines and precau-tionary measures.

The best way to prevent the spread of virus is to wear face mask when heading out in pub-lic, observe social distancing, limit family gatherings, avoid large crowds, and get vaccinat-ed.

And even after getting the vaccine, health authorities still recommend people to not abandon all of them. Other pre-scribed protective measures also include doing more outdoor activities and washing hands frequently.

Properly wearing a mask can help keep everybody safe while navigating the pandemic.

While one should continue to wash hands, cover coughs and sneezes, avoid touching face and follow social distancing rules,

wearing a mask is an essential step to stay safe.

The most common way COV-ID-19 spread is through per-son-to-person contact. When an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks, they produce respiratory droplets that can travel about six feet and can land in the mouths or noses of those nearby.

COVID-19 can also be spread by people who don’t know they have the virus since they aren’t experiencing any symptoms. Because of this, health profes-

sionals recommend wearing masks or cloth face coverings to help slow the spread of the virus. In these circumstances, a mask can add an extra layer of protection.

While wearing a mask may not keep one from getting COV-ID-19, it can help lower the odds.

If a person is sick, a mask can help prevent germs from infect-ing others. If one is healthy, a mask can help keep respirato-ry droplets from someone who is sick from landing in his/her nose and mouth.

While we can’t quantify how effective it is to wear a mask, we do know it offers some pro-tection while not wearing one offers none. In short, we are all at the lowest risk when every-one wears a mask.

And remember, social dis-tancing and hand washing are very important safety precau-tions too that everyone should follow.

Studies show that even a dis-tance of three feet significant-ly decreases the spread of the coronavirus from one person to another. At six feet, the risk decreases even further, at nine feet even further than that, and so on, particularly in an indoor setting.

Scientific evidence is clear: prescribed protective meas-ures help prevent people from spreading COVID-19, and from being infected themselves.

Institutions (CIBAFI), the glob-al umbrella of Islamic financial institutions, successfully con-ducted the second series of its online technical workshops for this year.

The two-day CIBAFI Tech-nical Workshop was entitled “Maqasid al Shariah in Islamic Finance”.

Following the successful se-ries of CIBAFI Online Technical Workshop on “Maqasid al Sha-riah in Islamic Finance” in Ar-abic and English languages in 2020, CIBAFI is committed to meeting the high demand from

its French speaking members stakeholders by delivering this workshop which covered the same agenda in the French language.

During the last decades, Is-lamic finance has seen rapid growth contributing more sig-nificantly to the global finan-cial industry. Islamic finance facilitates and encourages modern financial practices to be in line with Shariah princi-ples and requirements.

In the same context, CIBAFI always seeks to raise aware-ness about Islamic finance, which considers Maqasid al Shariah, one of the essential concepts that play a vital role in strengthening its growth.

Bitcoin hits record before landmark Coinbase listing on NasdaqReuters | London

Bitcoin hit a record of $62,741 yesterday, ex-

tending its 2021 rally to new heights a day before the list-ing of Coinbase shares in the United States.

The largest US cryptocur-rency exchange’s listing on the Nasdaq on Wednesday is considered a landmark victory for cryptocurrency advocates.

Bitcoin is the world’s big-gest cryptocurrency, with growing mainstream ac-ceptance as an investment and a means of payment. It rose as much as 5% on Tues-day. Smaller rival Ethereum also reached a record high of $2,205.

The overall cryptocur-rency market capitalisation hit an all-time peak of $2 trillion earlier this month, according to data and mar-ket trackers CoinGecko and Blockfolio.

Major firms including BNY Mellon, Mastercard Inc and Tesla Inc are among those to have embraced or invested in cryptocurren-cies.

Bitcoin topped $60,000 early last month, fuelled by Tesla’s move to buy $1.5 billion of the digital cur-rency for its balance sheet. For the past two weeks, it had traded in a tight range.

“When bitcoin markets create new highs, the price often range-trades and we witness a round of prof-it-taking,” said James But-terfill of digital asset man-ager CoinShares.

Hey Siri, when is Apple’s next event? April 20Reuters

Siri, Apple Inc’s virtual assistant, might have

spilled the beans by telling users yesterday that the iP-hone maker is going to host a special event on April 20.

Siri, who is proficient at stone walling curious Apple fans quizzing it about new products and upcoming events by re-directing them to the company’s website, prematurely seemed to have revealed the plan to hold an event next Tuesday.

When asked by Reuters reporters about Apple’s next event on their iPhones, Siri responded by displaying a message that said, “the special event is on Tuesday, April 20th, at Apple Park in Cupertino, CA. You can get all the details on Apple.com.”The company was not immediately available to comment.

The reveal was first re-ported by tech news website MacRumors.

Apple typically launches new hardware in an event in March. This year, the com-pany did not have a product launch event and technolo-gy news websites speculat-ed that it will launch new iPad Pro models and other products before its annual developers’ conference in June. Known for splashy launches packed with hun-dreds of journalists at its sprawling campus, Apple has turned to virtual events since last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Beijing summons 34 tech firms after record Alibaba fineAFP News

Chinese regulators have warned 34 technology

giants -- including Baidu and Tencent -- to “recti-fy” any anti-competitive measures, a statement said Tuesday, days after e-com-merce giant Alibaba was fined nearly $2.8 billion for abusing its dominant mar-ket position.

Companies summoned by the regulator include inter-net giants Baidu, Tencent and ByteDance, the owner of TikTok.

The 34 firms have been given one month to under-go “complete rectification” after conducting internal checks and inspections, the statement said, and to cor-rect any practices which “harms competition.”

UK economy grew in FebruaryReuters | London

Britain’s economy grew by 0.4% in February

from January as companies prepared for the lifting of a third coronavirus lockdown, according to official data which also showed a par-tial recovery in post-Brexit trade with the European Union.

Britain’s economy shrank by almost 10% last year, its biggest slump in more than three centuries and a more severe fall than in most Eu-ropean economies, as the country was battered by the coronavirus pandemic.

Tuesday’s data showed GDP remained 7.8% be-low its level a year earlier, shortly before the pandemic swept Europe, and was 3.1% lower than its level in Oc-tober, before the two latest lockdowns hammered Brit-ain’s huge services sector.

Still, a fast rollout of COV-ID-19 vaccines has raised the prospect of a bounce-back this year and in 2022.

Non-essential shops and outdoor hospitality venues reopened on Monday and Prime Minister Boris John-son hopes to relax most coronavirus restrictions before the end of June.

Figures as of closing

News in brief u US federal health agencies yesterday recommended pausing the use of Johnson & Johnson’s single-dose COVID-19 vaccine after six recipients developed a rare disorder involving blood clots. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will hold an advisory meeting on Wednesday to review the cases. All the six recipients were women between the ages of 18 and 48. One woman died and a second in Nebraska has been hospitalized in critical condition, the New York Times reported, citing officials.

u The United States will deploy an additional 500 troops to Germany, Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin said during a visit to Berlin, marking a reversal of former President Donald Trump’s plans to withdraw about 12,000 troops from the NATO country. “We have ceased planning (for a

troop drawdown),” Austin said at a news conference with his German counterpart Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer yesterday. “I think our

assignment of an additional 500 troops speaks to the level of our partnership and our commitment to NATO,” he added.

u Austrian Health Minister Rudolf Anschober of the Greens, the junior partner in the conservative-led coalition, said on Tuesday he is stepping down, exhausted and sick from battling the coronavirus pandemic and occasionally other officials.“I ... do not want to break myself,” Anschober said in a short-notice statement to the media, describing blood-pressure problems that have caused him to take sick leave twice recently. “In the worst health crisis in decades the republic needs a health minister who is 100% fit. That is not currently me.”

u Fresh protests broke out Monday in Minneapolis despite a curfew implemented after a police officer fatally shot a young Black man, fueling tensions in a US city already on edge because of the George Floyd murder trial. Dozens of protesters waved signs and chanted slogans in front of the police station in Brooklyn Center, the suburb where Sunday’s killing occurred. Demonstrators taunted police through newly erected wire fencing around the station, and carried signs saying “Jail all racist killer cops,” “Am I next?” and “No justice, no peace.” Police fired tear gas at the protesters several times and ordered them to disperse. About 40 people were arrested, several officers suffered minor injuries and there was sporadic looting elsewhere in the area, law enforcement officials said.

Bahrain’s Startup’s Must Go Green

According to the International

Monetary Fund 2021 report,

Bahrain’s GDP growth is expected to come back by +2.3%

in 2021 and +2.8% in 2022, subject to the

post-pandemic global economic recovery.

The start-ups in Bahrain are expected to play a vital role in

this recovery

Bahrain’s Economic Vision 2030 is an ambitious and far-sighted strat-egy that focuses on shaping the vision of the government, society, and the economy by being based around the three guiding principles of

sustainability, fairness, and competitiveness. The comprehensive nature of the vision has not only ensured the protection and conservation of the environment along with crucial economic growth, but has also served as the backbone of a very healthy start-up ecosystem in Bahrain. As the world economy reeled under the impact of COVID19, Bahrain too experienced contractions in the economy owing to fluctuations in the oil industry. In fact the year 2020 saw the economy plummet to -4.5%.

However according to the International Monetary Fund 2021 report, Bahrain’s GDP growth is expected to come back by +2.3% in 2021 and +2.8% in 2022, subject to the post-pandemic global economic recovery. The start-ups in Bahrain are expected to play a vital role in this recovery. A study commissioned by StartupBlink confirms the significance of start-ups in the resurgence and revival of the Bahraini economy. According to the study findings, the UAE and Bahrain figure in the top 100 destinations for start-ups in the world. The report praised Bahrain’s enabling environ-ment in the form of collaborative start-up communities and framework of legal support systems for start-ups and entrepreneurs. Initiatives such as Start-Up Bahrain, Tamkeen and Bahrain FinTech Bay were particularly highlighted in addition to favourable tax conditions as the reasons for a flourishing start-up economy.

With such eminence and importance being associated with the start-ups in Bahrain, it is essential to ensure that these vibrant engines of economic growth have zero carbon footprint in the best interests of Bahrain’s delicate ecology and environment. In a world that is increasingly becoming mindful about the impacts businesses have on the environment, the start-ups in Bah-rain will do well to sensitise themselves on the ecological footprint of their businesses and how they can become pioneers in achieving a zero carbon start-up ecosystem in the Kingdom which will set gold standards not only for the GCC, but also for aspiring start-ups across the world.

As early as 2017, Bahrain was facing difficult challenges arising out of pollu-tion that saw the fine particulate mat-ter concentration go up to 56.1 per cent. As climate change and global warming keep getting worse, the environmental problems in Bahrain are expected to exponentially increase by 2050 unless the key drivers of economic growth that also sizeably contribute to an in-creasing carbon foot print in Bahrain do the needful to rein in pollution. The corporate social responsibility activi-ties of the businesses are one aspect of safeguarding the environment which are effective but not enough by them-selves to control the runaway pollution levels of these times.

Start-ups must set an example by showing that businesses and ecology can thrive hand-hand. As a beginning each start-up must opt for a green web hosting company for their websites. The green web hosting company would ensure that their servers are running 24/7 not on fossil fuel powered energy but renewable energy. This lends enormous eco-logical credibility for businesses starting newly especially in front of their clients who nowadays are very aware and appreciative of environmental responsibilities. The great part is that the green web hosting companies provide their services for the same cost as those whose servers are powered by fossil fuels.

The start-ups can also focus on “work-from-home(WFH)” philosophy which is highly advisable in these times of pandemic that mandates social distancing. WFH can also be instrumental in reducing the Co2 emissions of the company as air-conditioning and other energy consumption is drastical-ly reduced. The WFH way of life when combined with green commuting can pay rich ecological dividends for new businesses. Start-ups can incentivise the use of hybrid and electrical vehicles, carpooling and usage of public transport among their employees. This will not only go a long way in gen-erating awareness for the environment but will also meaningfully reduce carbon emission footprint of the start-up.

In addition to the above measures, the start-ups can adopt comprehen-sive recycling and upcycling policies by tying up with green vendors, this will ensure easing of e-waste generation and reduce pressure on landfills that are currently overburdened with electronic waste. The start-ups can also forge strategic collaborations with the government in order to become responsible stakeholders in the government efforts to preserve ecology and protect nature.

Today’s start-ups are tomorrow’s multinational companies. How green is the economy of the future will depend on how green today’ start-ups are.

Suspend sale of live wild mammalsReuters | Geneva

International agencies includ-ing the World Health Organ-isation urged countries yes-

terday to suspend the sale of live wild mammals in food markets, warning they may be the source of more than 70% of emerging infectious diseases in humans.

The guidance, aimed at ensur-ing the global food system is safe and sustainable, follows a WHO-led mission to Wuhan, China, to investigate the origin of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

“This + other recommendations will contribute to < the risk of emerging #zoonoses,” Peter Ben Embarek, the WHO official who led the January-February mission, said in a tweet.

The WHO, the World Organi-sation for Animal Health (OIE) and UN Environment Programme (UNEP) urged national authori-ties to: “Suspend the trade in live caught wild animals of mamma-lian species for food or breeding purposes and close sections of food markets selling live caught

wild animals of mammalian spe-cies as an emergency measure unless demonstrable effective regulations and adequate risk as-sessment are in place.”

They said animals, particularly wild animals, were reported to be the source of more than 70% of all emerging infectious diseases in humans.

China last year banned trade in wildlife for human consump-

tion but legal loopholes allow some disease-prone species to be farmed, according to regional experts.

“This is not a new recommen-dation, but COVID-19 has brought new attention to this threat given the magnitude of its consequenc-es,” WHO spokeswoman Fadela Chaib told a news briefing.

The WHO-led team, which visit-ed the Huanan market in Wuhan

where the first human infections of COVID-19 were detected, said the new virus had probably been transmitted from bats to humans through another animal.

“When wild animals are kept in cages or pens, slaughtered and dressed in open market areas, these areas become contaminated with body fluids, faeces and other waste, increasing the risk of trans-mission of pathogens to workers

and customers and potentially resulting in spillover of pathogens to other animals in the market,” the guidance said.

Most emerging infectious dis-eases such as Lassa fever, Mar-burg hemorrhagic fever and Ni-pah viral disease have wildlife origins, it said.

Japan to release treated Fukushima water into the sea

AFP News

Japan will release more than a million tonnes of treated wa-

ter from the stricken Fukushima nuclear plant into the ocean, the government said Tuesday, trigger-ing a furious regional reaction and fierce opposition from local fishing communities.

The process is not likely to begin for several years and could take decades to complete, but China quickly slammed the decision as “extremely irresponsible” and South Korea summoned the Jap-anese ambassador.

Japan’s government argues the release is safe because the water is processed to remove almost all radioactive elements and will be diluted.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has endorsed the re-lease, which it says is similar to the disposal of wastewater at nuclear plants elsewhere.

Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga told a ministerial meeting that dis-posing of the water was an “inev-itable task” in the decades-long process of decommissioning the nuclear plant.

He said the release would hap-pen only “after ensuring the safety levels of the water” and alongside measures to “prevent reputational damage”.

Around 1.25 million tonnes of water have accumulated in tanks at the nuclear plant, which was crippled after going into meltdown following the 2011 tsunami.

It includes water used to cool the plant, as well as rain and ground-water that seeps in daily.

Around 140 cubic metres (5,000 cubic feet) of radioactive water was generated by the site every day in 2020

Teething problems: Bidens’ dog Major goes back to schoolAFP News

The Bidens’ rambunctious young dog Major is leaving

the White House again, this time for extra schooling in how to behave more like a presidential canine.

Michael LaRosa, a spokesman for First Lady Jill Biden, said Ma-jor would “undergo some addi-tional training to help him adjust to life in the White House.”

“The off-site, private training will take place in the Washington, DC area, and it is expected to last

a few weeks,” LaRosa said. The transition to the White

House has been tricky for the German Shepherd, a former res-cue pup.

In March, he was briefly sent back to the Biden family home in Delaware after at least one biting incident.

President Joe Biden told ABC News in March that his four leg-ged friend was merely over-pro-tective in the crowded White House complex.

The dog gets startled when

“you turn a corner and there’s two people you don’t know,” Bid-en said.

Although the dog already re-ceived some remedial training, that does not appear to have done the trick.

But while Major goes off to school, his elderly, fellow German Shepherd companion Champ will stay with his masters.

“Champ will be here,” LaRosa said.

Major, on the left, needs to go back to school, though Champ, on the right, stays at the White House

Chinese Premier calls for more communication between China, USReuters | Beijing

China and the United States should step up their com-

munication while managing their differences and respecting each other’s core interests, Chi-nese Premier Li Keqiang told a group of senior US executives yesterday.

China hopes the United States could work with Chi-na to meet each other halfway, said Li at a virtual conference with presidents and chief exec-utives from more than 20 large US companies.

“(We need to) step up dia-logue and communication, and expand practical cooperation, properly manage differences, and push Sino-US relations to-wards the direction of overall stability,” Li was quoted as say-ing by state television.

Bilateral ties had sunk to the lowest level in decades under the Trump administration, which accused China of com-mitting a range of misdeeds from intellectual property theft to the spread of the novel coro-navirus.

High-level talks in Alaska last month, the first since U.S. President Joe Biden took office, yielded no breakthrough.

The need for communica-tion was echoed by China’s state planner also on Tuesday when it told China represent-atives from over 40 US firms at a roundtable that it welcomed conversations with US firms on any complaint, including forced technology transfers and intel-lectual property rights.

“If you believe you’ve been harmed or bullied in China, tell us first,” Zhang Huanteng, vice director of the Department of National Economy at the NDRC.

“We’d feel very wronged if we aren’t aware of things and the US government tells us first,” said Zhang, adding that Chi-nese regulators were baffled when they first read the US Sec-tion 301 Report, which set off the Sino-US trade war.

NDRC Officials also briefed the firms present, including

Intel, Johnson & Johnson and IBM, on China’s 2021-2025 de-velopment plan, saying there is huge potential to collaborate on electric vehicles, carbon neu-trality and the digital economy.

“We hope the US business circle could work together with NDRC to push the great ship of Sino-US relations back to the track of healthy development as soon as possible,” said Gao Jian, vice director at the NDRC International Department.

Tao Lin, a vice president at Tesla, told reporters that she welcomed NDRC’s invitation to more dialogue.

“Officials at the NDRC are quite blunt - if we have any is-sues we can talk to them, so there’s no need for us to go to US headquarters, foreign govern-ments and then back to China,” she said.

One dead in Knoxville school shootingReuters

A high school student in Knox-ville, Tennessee opened fire on

his campus on Monday, wounding an officer, before being shot and killed by police.

The shooting erupted at about 3:15 p.m. at Austin-East Magnet High School on the east side of the city. It’s the latest in a string of shootings across the U.S. since mid-March.

Tennessee Bureau of Investiga-tion Director David Rausch told reporters Monday the wounded officer was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

“One officer returned fire. He was pronounced& the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, and has since been identified as a stu-dent at Austin East.”

Austin-East was locked down following the gunfire and parents who rushed to the scene were di-rected to pick up their children at a rear entrance.

Dislodged ship held in Suez Canal as talks continue

Reuters | Tokyo

A ship that blocked the Suez Canal for almost a week in

March has not been given clear-ance to leave the waterway as discussions continue over a com-pensation claim made to the ves-sel’s owner Shoei Kisen, an official from the Japanese company said yesterday.

The Ever Given has been in a lake separating two sections of the canal since it was dislodged on March 29, as the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) conducts inves-tigations.

Yumi Shinohara, deputy man-ager with owner Shoei Kisen’s fleet management department, confirmed the canal had made a compensation claim but gave no further details.

A source with the Suez Canal Authority, who declined to be

named, said a court order had been issued for the ship to be held, adding that negotiations were still taking place.

Results of the SCA’s investi-gation were expected to be an-nounced by the end of the week, two canal sources added.

SCA Chairman Osama Rabie said on Egyptian TV last week that the Ever Given would not leave until the investigation was finished and compensation paid. He also said the canal had borne “great moral damage” as well as shipping fee losses and salvage operation costs. He has also said he hoped to settle matters amicably.

Ships typically have protection & indemnity (P&I) insurance, which covers third party liability claims including environmental damage and injury. Separate hull and machinery policies cover ves-sels against physical damage.

overflowing and people are dying – and it’s to-tally avoidable. With a concerted effort to apply public health measures alongside #VaccinEqui-ty, we could bring this pandemic under control in a matter of months. The choice is ours.

Page 10: P2 Bahrain-Saudi ties ‘worth emulating’

‘Magnifico’ finally deserves world title shotTDT | Manila

Filipino boxer Mark “Mag-nifico” Magsayo has made

the country proud again after destroying American Pablo Cruz in just four rounds in their featherweight 10-rounder at Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncas-ville, Connecticut.

In dominating his 34-year-old Texan foe, the 25-year-old from Tagbilaran City, Bohol re-mains unbeaten. He secured his 22nd victory and 14th knockout, his first in three fights.

But more importantly, Mag-sayo’s victory proved to be a statement that he finally de-serves a world title shot.

Training under the tutelage of Freddie Roach, Magsayo sent his victim to the mat three times.

Cruz first went down in the middle of the second round af-ter absorbing a stiff jab from Magsayo and he went down again in the third round when Magsayo unleashed a flurry of hooks.

Finally in the fourth round, Magsayo finished off Cruz with a devastating right straight prompting referee John Callas to stop the fight and claim his second straight victory in the United States.

It was also his second consec-utive win under Hall of Fame trainer Roach following a hard-earned split decision victory over Rigoberto Hermosillo last October.

It also primed himself up for a title fight hopefully by the end of the year or by 2022 against the likes of champions Ema-

nuel Navarrete (World Boxing Organization), Leo Sta. Cruz (World Boxing Association), and Gary Russel Jr (World Box-ing Council).

The fight was an undercard in the Jerwin Ancajas-Jonathan Rodriguez title bout for the In-ternational Boxing Federation (IBF) super-flyweight champi-onship.

Magsayo’s brilliant perfor-mance had local fight analyst Nissi Icasiano going away im-pressed, saying he was not to-

tally surprised that the fighter dominated the way he did.

“For Magsayo, I already knew the style of his opponent would favor him in the fight. The re-sult of the bout didn’t come as a surprise,” he said.

The analyst went on to un-derscore that credit should also be given for the fighter’s team for preparing him well amid the prevailing conditions with the pandemic.

After fighting last year, Mag-sayo stayed in the US to train under Roach and Justin For-tune.

So what is next for Magsayo?“It most likely puts him in

a title eliminator next. Mag-sayo is in the Top 10 of four governing bodies, but he ranks higher in the IBF. I think No. 5 if I am not mistaken. So a battle for a possible title shot in the future may be on the horizon,” said Icasiano of Magsayo, who with his latest victory won his second fight under Manny Pac-quiao’s MP Promotions with whom he signed with last year.

15-year-old Eala rising up rapidly in pro ranksTDT | Manila

There is no way but up for Filipino tennis ace Alex

Eala.Just 15-years-old, Eala is

already being heralded as the Philippines’ brightest hope in the sport after making her presence felt in various interna-tional tournaments, including Grand Slam events like the Aus-tralian Open, French Open and, most recently, the Miami Open.

Now the promising lass is in 662nd place in the latest Wom-en’s Tennis Association (WTA) rankings released this week, an increase of 53 spots from her previous ranking.

The ascent was boosted by Eala’s brilliant run in the recent W60 tournament in Bellinzona, Switzerland where she reached the Round of 16. The event was her first-ever $60,000 tourna-ment.

A Rafa Nadal Academy schol-ar, Eala opened her campaign in the W60 tournament with a hard-earned, three-set win over Margot Yerolymos of France before dominating Laura-Ioana Paar of Romania in the second.

Her run would come to an end in the third round against hometown bet Simona Waltert, but not after making her oppo-nent sweat for three sets (5-7, 6-3, 2-6), which lasted for more than two hours.

For her efforts, her team at the Rafa Nadal Academy laud-ed her and expressed its full support for the player moving forward.

Eala may have bowed out af-ter the third round of the W60

Bellinzona tournament but her parents insist “here is nothing to be discouraged about.”

Alex’s parents are even grate-ful that she is slowly inching closer to her dream of quali-fying into the WTA grand slam tournaments.

“Alex is a fast learner and she never gets dispirited with every loss, in fact it makes her strong-er and fiercer,” said Mike Eala, Alex’s father.

“She seems to be laser fo-cused on her tennis. She knows

that if she keeps her focus on her level of play, keeps her head down and works hard, the wins will eventually come,” he add-ed.

He said there is no stopping Eala until she reaches her ulti-mate dream of putting the Phil-ippines in the world tennis map.

“Alex says that it is always heartwarming to know that people get inspired by what she does,” said Mike, who sent his daughter to Mallorca, Spain to undergo training at the world-famous Rafael Nadal Tennis Academy.

Eala’s showing in Bellinzona, where she was a junior exempt as the world’s number three-ranked juniors player, was a continuation of her solid per-formance as a professional.

She won her first professional singles title at W15 Manacor in Mallorca, Spain, in January then recorded three consecu-tive quarterfinal appearances in her next three tournaments.

Data-driven De Bruyne key to breaking Man City’s Champions League complex

Manchester City travel to Borussia Dortmund holding a slender 2-1 lead and bearing plenty of scars from quarter-final ties over the past three years

• The Champions League is the one trophy to have so far eluded Kevin De Bruyne since he arrived in England in 2015

AFP | London

“Win everything,” said Kevin De Bruyne when asked of his ambitions

for Manchester City after signing a new four-year contract to reportedly become the Premier League’s highest paid player last week.

With less than two months of the season to play, City are still on course for a historic quadruple of Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup.

Just breaking through the barrier of the Champions League quarter-finals would be a landmark for Pep Guardiola as he tries to reach the last four for the first time in five years in Manchester today.

City travel to Borussia Dortmund holding a slender 2-1 lead and bearing plenty of scars from quarter-final ties over the past three years.

“Different year, same stuff,” was how a disappointed De Bruyne summed up a 3-1 defeat by Lyon in Lisbon last season.

Defensive mistakes, missed chances and VAR controversy also combined to deny Guardiola’s men as they bowed

out to Liverpool and Tottenham in contrasting fashion in 2018 and 2019.

Despite the explosive talent of Erling Braut Haaland, a Dortmund side sitting fifth in the Bundesliga should not pose a problem for the runaway Premier League leaders.

But De Bruyne has lived through too many City horror shows in Europe’s premier club competition to take any-thing for granted.

The Champions League is the one trophy to have so far eluded the Belgian since he arrived in England in 2015.

A determination to end City’s wait to conquer Europe was key to both the player and club’s motivations for agree-

ing a new contract worth a reported £20 million ($27 million) a year.

No agent De Bruyne showed he is no ordinary

player off the pitch as well as on it dur-ing the negotiations.

The 29-year-old did not use an agent and instead worked with analytics com-panies to show the data that backed up his claim to be the key figure in City’s success.

CEO of Analytics FC, Jeremy Steele, told The Athletic: “After discussing the scope of the work, De Bruyne commis-sioned us to create a report studying almost every aspect of his contribution

to the club.”Among the data crunched was how

drastically City’s chances of winning the Champions League for the first time would be reduced should they lose De Bruyne.

Guardiola’s men got a sense of what life without him might be like as they slumped to just a fourth defeat in 49 games this season to Leeds on Saturday.

Even with City trailing against 10-men, Guardiola kept his midfield maes-tro on the bench for the full 90 minutes in a clear signal of intent that his prior-ity lies in Dortmund this week.

Two seasons ago, City became the first side to ever win the English do-mestic treble of Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup.

Yet, even replicating that incredible feat would now feel like a let down if they crumble again under the pressure when all of Europe is watching.

Guardiola admitted his side did feel the weight of expectancy in the first leg as they needed Phil Foden’s 90th-min-ute winner to take even a one-goal lead to Germany.

But this is the first time City have had a quarter-final, first leg lead to defend under Guardiola.

The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss has managed the entire season with this month in mind.

The base for City’s success has been built on a solid defence rather than a prolific attack. Marco Reus’s away goal at the Etihad was the first Guardiola’s men had conceded in over 800 minutes in the Champions League.

Should they score today, Dortmund will need three to progress without the need for penalties, which no side has managed against City since Leicester tore a makeshift defence to shreds in September.

Guardiola has also made the most of the vast resources at his disposal. For the first time in months, the seven changes he made for the visit of Leeds backfired to delay City’s coronation as English champions for a third time in four seasons.

But that will be a small price to pay if a refreshed De Bruyne inspires his side to take another big step to realising his ambition of total domination.

Kadimagomaev looks to bounce back, challenges Babayev for BRAVE CF 51TDT | Manama

The fastest-growing MMA organization will make its

much-anticipated debut in Be-larus, with BRAVE CF 51, which is set to take place on June 4th in association with Rukh Sports Management. And BRAVE Com-bat Federation’s latest event announcement has opened the gate to a lot of tension within several weight divisions, with fighters calling one another out, elaborate challenging messages on Instagram, and a lot of trash talking.

That wasn’t the case for Featherweight young star Hu-sein Kadimagomaev, who took a rather upscale approach of challenging an opponent for BRAVE CF 51 in Belarus. After a fight of the night performance as the co-main event of BRAVE CF 47: Asian Domination, when he eventually fell short for the first time as a mixed martial arts (ending a 19-win unbeaten run) Kadimagomaev is eager to get back to the winning column and has set his eyes on Agshin Babayev.

Shortly after the announce-ment of BRAVE CF 51 in Bela-rus, Kadimagomaev shared an instagram post with his picture next to that of Babayev who has over three times the amount of professional fights on his re-cord than he does. He has urged BRAVE CF officials to make that fight and says he’s ready to put

on a show for Belarus fans.“We both had our fights in

the same card and now I am sure that Agshin is as hungry as I am and intends to return,”

says Kadimagomaev. “You’re a good, experienced fighter with a record of 22-7, I would be honoured to share the cage with you at the June BRAVE CF tournament in Minsk.”

Babayev has yet to respond publicly, however has been sharing Kadimagomaev’s state-ment over social media and re-posting popular outlets who are eager for this match-up as the similarities in their fighting styles would result in a spectac-ular display of mixed martial arts. Fans have also been vocal about rooting for this as specu-lations continue to rise.

It’s evident that Kadimag-omaev is looking for a way to redeem himself after his latest fight and prove himself worthy of being a top contender for the vacant BRAVE CF Featherweight World Champion title.

‘Stable’ Man City better set for Champions League success - GundoganAFP | London

Manchester City’s improved defensive record means

they are better prepared for the fine margins of the Champions League latter stages this season, midfielder Ilkay Gundogan said yesterday.

City are aiming to reach the semi-finals for the first time in five years under Pep Guardiola when they take a 2-1 lead to Gundogan’s old club Borussia Dortmund for the second leg of their quarter-final tie today.

Marco Reus’s away goal for the Germans in Manchester last week was the first goal C i t y h a d conceded in more than 8 0 0 m i n -utes in the Champions League since their open-i n g g r o u p game in Oc-tober.

Defensive m i s t a k e s have been a c o n s i s t e n t f e a t u r e o f City’s exits in Europe’s premier club c o m p e t i t i o n

under Guardiola. They were knocked out on

away goals by Monaco in 2017 after a thrilling tie ended 6-6, lost 5-1 over two legs to Liver-pool in 2018 and again missed out on away goals against Tot-tenham in 2019 after a 4-4 draw on aggregate.

Last season it was Lyon, who shocked Guardiola’s men in a one-off tie, winning 3-1 in Lis-

bon.“For me it is very

important (to take the next step in Europe).

I have expectations to myself, I have expecta-

tions to my teammates, to my team,” said Gundog-

an in a pre-match press conference.

“I know we have great players and a great team and should have been to the semis earlier. We were lacking some-thing. We made lit-

tle mistakes which led to goals.

“When you concede this

a m o u n t of goals

in the leg at home,

i t i s n o t easy.“I feel like we are

much more stable at the moment. We are

defending well.”

However, Guardiola believes scoring in Dortmund will be the key to reaching the last four giv-en the threat the German giants pose going forward, led by Nor-way attacker Erling Haaland.

“We have to control emo-tions, but sometimes you need emotions to win these games. We go there to win. Each player will need to be a leader on the pitch,” said Guardiola.

“We start 2-1. In the last 26, 27 games they have scored, so we have to score goals and to do that we have to play our game and be effective up front.”

Real Madrid skipper Ramos tests positive for coronavirus

AFP | Madrid

Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos, who was already

out of this week’s Champions League meeting with Liver-pool because of a calf injury, has tested positive for Cov-id-19, the club announced on Tuesday.

“Our player Sergio Ramos tested positive in the last Cov-id-19 test he performed,” Real Madrid said in a statement.

Ramos is the second case of coronavirus detected in the Real Madrid squad in a week. French defender Raph-ael Varane tested positive last Tuesday.

Varane has not yet been giv-en the green light to rejoin his teammates.

Ramos injured his left calf while with Spain during the international window but he has been a vocal presence on the sidelines since.

The positive test means he has to stay away from his team-mates until he tests negative.

The 35-year-old defender is going through one of the most difficult seasons of his career

-- he underwent knee surgery in February and, after return-ing in mid-March, missed the Liga game against Celta Vigo on March 20 because of a shin injury.

Ramos has still revealed his plans once his contract with Real Madrid expires on June 30.

Said Maalem was visibly ir-ritated when Fakhreddine was forced to cancel their fight dur-ing BRAVE CF 50, due to health issues. The Light Heavyweight

Fakhreddine and his fans fired back with several call-outs and trash talk from the Middle-weight champ, which put their

rivalry into a whole new level. And now, the Lebanese legend wants to settle things once and for all in Minsk, Belarus.

Through his Instagram ac-count, ‘’The Latest’’ plead with BRAVE Combat Federation to make the fight between him and Said Maalem happen and said

Klopp strives for perfection to pull off Real comebackJurgen Klopp believes only a “perfect” performance will give Liverpool the chance to come from 3-1 down against Real Madrid

• Liverpool will end without a trophy if they fail to pull off a fightback against Real Madrid today

TDT | Manama

Liverpool must produce a “per-fect performance” to overcome a 3-1 first leg deficit against

Real Madrid today and reach the Champions League semi-finals, man-ager Jurgen Klopp said.

A difficult season for the English champions will end without a trophy should they fail to pull off a fightback against the 13-time European Cup winners today.

“This Real Madrid team has some of the greatest talent playing football in the world today. This isn’t a sur-prise – it’s what Real Madrid do. So to beat a side like this you must always strive for the perfect performance,” Klopp said in remarks published on the Liverpool website yesterday.

“But what we will not lose sight of is how good we are, the talent we have, the magic in our dressing room and the character required to make special moments happen.

“We have the entire package at

Liverpool.”One part of the package missing

from previous glory European nights at Anfield will be the crowd because of ongoing coronavirus restrictions.

Liverpool famously overcame a 3-0 first leg deficit to beat Barcelona 4-0 in the second leg of their Cham-pions League semi-final on route to winning the competition for a sixth time in 2019.

But, with no fans in the stands, Klopp has played down compari-sons with that clash or the fightback from 3-1 down on the night, to score three times in the last 24 minutes and

beat Borussia Dortmund 4-3 and ad-vance 5-4 on aggregate in the Europa League five years ago.

“It is an indisputable truth that a full stadium would have been signif-icant for us,” added Klopp.

“When I think back to the many special nights we have had here, I usually describe them with the word ‘together’. That is because those nights were about the collec-tive power of this club. Support-ers and players coming together to produce memories that last a lifetime.

“My job – and the job of the boys

– is to channel your energy despite the forced distance. We know it’s still there, therefore we can still use it. It’s more of a challenge, of course, but since when did we ever do anything the easy way?”

Left-back Andy Robertson said the players have a responsibility to create the atmosphere themselves.

“The Barcelona game, that wouldn’t be possible without the fans. The fans made us feel 10 feet tall,” said the Scotland captain.

“Walking out to 55,000 other peo-ple who believed, gave you that extra 10 percent.

“We need to try and create that atmosphere in the changing room before we go out. We’ve got to have no regrets.”

This Real Madrid team has some of the greatest

talent playing football in the world today. This

isn’t a surprise – it’s what Real Madrid do. So to
