PAG’s Total Battery Design Philosophy
Technologically AdvancedPAG batteries are the most technologically advanced in the industry. They incorporate many unique proprietary features designed to assistthe cameraman and prolong battery life.
PAG batteries are manufactured to withstand the strains and stressesof use in the harshest environments, and to perform consistently overtheir natural lifetime.
PAG uses only the highest quality components in the construction ofits batteries. Safety, reliability, and durability are the prime concerns, from conception to final assembly.
CompatibilityPAG has always embraced universality. It is the only manufacturer thatoffers products that are compatible with the four most popular batterymounting systems: V-Mount, PAGlok, Snap-on (Anton Bauer) and NP1.PAG also offers mount adaptors that enable you to convert systems.
Why Li-Ion?Modern cameras and working conditions require lightweight, reliablebatteries, with extended run-times, longer cycle lives and accuraterun-time information. PAG Li-Ion batteries are designed for suchconditions. They utilise advanced, high-quality Li-Ion cell-technologythat possesses a high energy density, making it particularly well-suitedto powering a wide range of modern cameras.
Two 95 watt-hour PAG Li-Ion batteries will provide enough power for aday’s shooting for most broadcast camera set-ups that include anon-board light. PAG Li-Ion batteries are compact and can betransported easily in your camera bag.
PAGlink Li-Ion batteries can be linked to provide a much highercurrent draw capability, often required for powering high-definitioncameras and accessories used for digital cinematography.
One of the benefits of Li-Ion technology is the low self-discharge rate. This means that batteries do not have to be topped-up if they have notbeen used for a few days. There is also no ‘memory effect’ as Li-Ionbatteries do not suffer long term problems as a result of partialcharging and discharging.
Latest Cell-TechnologyPAG uses only the latest, premium-quality, branded Li-Ion cells in itsproducts. High-quality cells are a vital prerequisite to the creation of asafe Li-Ion battery. Low-quality cells, which have crept into ourindustry, are susceptible to internal shorts. The name ‘PAG’ on abattery is an assurance that only the highest-quality materials havebeen used in its construction.
PAG’s cell-testing programs continuously assess all relevant cells fromreputable manufacturers and the company selects the best using anumber of criteria, including headline capacity, cycle life, voltage hold-up under load, and most importantly, safety. However, safety andreliability are not merely determined by the choice of cell - it is thetotal battery design philosophy that is important.
No Cell-ImbalanceThe Li-Ion cells are matched to extremely close tolerances so that thebattery pack is perfectly balanced. Severely imbalanced batteries canleak electrolyte and Li-Ion cells cannot be rebalanced after assembly. The low-resistance inter-cell nickel strapping and cell layout areconstructed to optimize current sharing, reducing one of the commoncauses of cell-imbalance.
PAG is Synonymous with SafetyPAG invests a great deal of time and money designing andmanufacturing safe battery systems which meet very stringenttechnical requirements.
PAG ensures that the battery is allowed to operate only within strictlimits. PAG could allow higher charging voltages, and lower dischargevoltages, which would create a battery with a slightly higher capacity.PAG could also allow a higher current to be drawn, however, the resultwould be reduced battery life and an increased chance of electrolyteleakage. Accordingly, the battery’s internal protection circuits and thesophisticated protection software have been set conservatively, withsafety and battery longevity as the prime considerations.
PAG’s electronic protection system guards against: over-voltage,under-voltage, over-current, over-charge, over-discharge, over-temperature, under-temperature and inappropriate charge sources. The protection circuits are fast-acting, and able to withstand high-voltage transients and reverse voltages.
Multiple-levels of safety, backed-up with proven software-drivenmechanisms, are included so that safe operation is not totallydependent upon the continual operation of a single protection circuit.
The circuit boards within the battery are designed so that all points ofhigh voltage are separated by the maximum possible isolation gap, thereby negating the chances of a problem even if electrolyte were toleak across the board.
As a final, absolute protection against electrolyte leakage, the circuitboards are completely coated with Parylene, a conformal coating thatis usually reserved for specialist aerospace and medical applications. In long-term tests, Parylene was the only circuit coating material whichwas not softened and eventually penetrated by the cell electrolyte. This expensive, but essential process is unique to PAG batteries andeffectively guarantees that there will not be a fire in the event ofelectrolyte leakage.
Polycarbonate CasesThe mechanical design of the battery provides protection in the eventof accident or abuse, cradling the cells against damaging shock andvibration. PAG battery cases are manufactured from high-impact,injection-moulded polycarbonate. The material is inherently verystrong (it is used for motorcycle crash helmets) and is unaffected bythe solvent powers of the battery electrolyte. Commonly usedmaterials, such as ABS, are dissolved and weakened by the electrolyte.PAG cases also feature non-slip external features for secure handling.

UN TestingPAG Li-Ion batteries are tested, by an independent test facility, forcompliance with United Nations specifications (a requirement of airtransport and civil aviation authorities). Testing is required becausepoorly constructed Li-Ion batteries have been known to break downinternally and self-ignite (See Air Transportation on Page 34).
A test report for each of PAG’s Li-Ion batteries, and not just theindividual cells, can be obtained from PAG Ltd.
Charger Communication & Longer Battery LifePAG Li-Ion batteries incorporate an integral digital communicationsystem which speaks to PAG chargers and determines the right chargeregime for the battery; thereby achieving the maximum capacity safely, and ensuring a longer battery cycle life.
Viewfinder Data DisplayPAG batteries support various viewfinder data displays, to supply thestate-of-charge stored in the battery’s integral computer, for display inthe camera viewfinder.
• The PAGlink battery system allows multiple batteries, working asone, to report their collective state-of-charge information for displayin the camera viewfinder. PAGlink supports all viewfinderinformation systems and adapts automatically once connected.
• The PAG V-Mount L95e (Model 9310V) displays available capacityas a percentage in the Sony camera viewfinder.
• The PAG L95eR (Model 9310R) displays available capacity as apercentage in the Red One camera viewfinder.
• The PAG Snap-on L95e (Model 9310A) displays availablecapacity in the viewfinder of cameras that use the Anton-Bauersystem.
Upgradeable FirmwarePAG batteries are firmware upgradeable, so that the program can beupdated in the field, if necessary, without the need to open the batterycase.
Service and Technical SupportPAG provides full technical support throughout a product’s lifetime. The quality of this back-up service is second-to-none because PAG isthe concept originator, design authority and manufacturer of itsproducts. It is one of the main reasons why broadcast organisationschoose PAG.
Capacity IndicationPAG’s battery capacity indication technology is the most advanced inthe industry. PAG Time Batteries incorporate a built-in capacityindicator and run-time display that is more accurate than any otheravailable. It is one of the best examples of superior PAG technology.
PAG’s revolutionary integral battery display software was designed anddeveloped at a time when the LED ‘fuel-gauge’ was state-of-the-art.The Time Battery features an alpha-numeric LCD that provides acontinually updated prediction of remaining equipment run-time,on-load, to a resolution of 1 minute. Capacity is displayed in Ah(to a resolution of 0.1Ah) and percentage (to a resolution of 1%).
The battery’s internal processor achieves this by taking into accountthe changes of load that occur during use, the charge status, thecondition of the cells, and the ambient temperature. PAG is the onlycompany to have achieved this.
PAG’s lower-cost e-series batteries incorporate a 5-LED capacityindicator that is able to show percentage state-of-charge, and on-loadrun-time to a resolution of 10 minutes. Additionally, the followinginformation is available via the battery display: battery software versionnumber; total cycle count to date; state-of-charge; and internal celltemperature.

PAG chargers are the secret to extended battery life
PAG Advanced Charging SystemsPAG is the pioneer of microcomputer-controlled fast-charging forbroadcast industry batteries. PAG chargers are the most versatile andadvanced battery management systems available; they are easy tooperate and the latest models are fully automatic.
The proprietary software that controls the charging process will extendthe working life of your batteries beyond anything that can be achievedusing other systems.
PAG’s latest chargers incorporate iPC Intelligent Parallel Charging, designed for the simultaneous fast-charging of PAG, Sony and IDXLi-Ion batteries.
PAG ACS is a sequential Advanced Charging System suitable for fast-charging PAG Li-Ion batteries as well as Ni-MH and Ni-Cd batteries ofany reputable manufacturer.
PAG Intelligent Parallel ChargingPAG’s unique Intelligent Parallel Charging software incorporates threephases. First it prepares batteries which are shut down or deeplydischarged for charge acceptance. Then it determines the type and state-of-charge of the batteries, and the maximum current that can be applied. Finally, it shares the current intelligently between the channels, brieflyaddressing the most discharged batteries first, before simultaneouslyfully-charging all batteries as quickly and efficiently as possible.
PAG Advanced Charging SystemPAG introduced accurate fast-charging for broadcast camera batterieswhen it was thought wrongly to be damaging. The PAG ACS software hasevolved over time as new battery technologies have been adopted by theindustry. PAG ACS chargers are intelligent, requiring only the positive andnegative connections to analyse the battery and apply and monitor thecharging process.
Fast-Charge TerminationTo perform properly, batteries must be charged by exactly the rightamount. Undercharging gives less than full capacity and a shorterrun-time, whereas overcharging can permanently damage the battery. To ensure that the fast-charge current is stopped at the correct time, and in order to detect the many varied problems associated with faultybatteries, the PAG ACS microcomputer uses a combination of severalcut-off algorithms. The software developed to do this is the mostpowerful and complex part of the PAG ACS charger.
Automatic Charge-Rate SelectionIn acknowledgement of the wide variety of batteries that are available tothe camera operator, PAG has incorporated further revolutionary softwarein its chargers that provides an easy and efficient system of batterymanagement. When a battery is connected to the charger, a period ofanalysis ensues in order to detect the battery’s cell-chemistry, state-of-charge, capacity and condition. The charger then automatically appliesthe correct regime to achieve a fully charged battery with the maximumcapacity and cycle life.
A Variety of FeaturesThe features of each PAG charger can vary to include either 2 or 4channels, a built-in camera power supply or special charging programs.
Discharge/ChargeBatteries which have been repeatedly subjected to partial discharging willbenefit from the analytic Discharge/Charge program which also measuresand displays available battery capacity.
Li-Ion RecoveryPAG chargers will automatically recover PAG Li-Ion batteries when theoutput has been shut down by the battery’s internal protection circuit.
Recovery ChargeThe Recovery Charge Program can be used to regain battery capacity lostas a result of extended storage or operation under adverse conditions.
Maintenance ChargeAn automatic Maintenance Charge is applied to Ni-Cd and Ni-MH batteries, after full charging, to keep them in peak condition and ready for instantuse. This program is not required for Li-Ion batteries.
Information DisplaysLarge backlit LCD displays indicate the status of the battery and thecharger, providing information such as charge loaded and battery voltage.
AC Camera PowerSeparate Camera Power Adaptors are available for use with the Cubechargers that enable you to power your camera from an AC mains supply. The PAG CPA outputs approximately 100W and is suitable for use withmodern broadcast cameras which can be powered by 14.8VLi-Ion batteries.
Certain Quasar charger models incorporate a Camera Power Supply thatprovides a nominal 50W suitable for powering most professionalbroadcast cameras. In power supply mode the Quasar displays anaccurate digital bar-graph of power consumption.
Charge a Greater Variety Of BatteriesThe latest PAG Cube chargers will simultaneously fast-charge PAG, Sonyand IDX Li-Ion batteries, as well as sequentially charging Ni-MH and Ni-Cdbatteries of any reputable manufacturer within the ranges 4.8V to 14.8V,1Ah to 10Ah. PAGlok and V-Mount models are available.
PAG Universal Chargers are available with a variety of battery connections:PAGlok, V-Mount, Snap-on (for PAG Snap-on batteries only) and NP1pockets. They incorporate PP90 sockets on their front panels, and arecapable of charging a great variety of batteries, within the chargers broadrange, via the appropriate charge adaptor.
ConstructionPAG chargers are designed for location use. They are quiet, cool-runningand have a lightweight impact-resistant moulded construction. The latestCube models incorporate an aluminium frame and a strong, moulded, retractable handle that enables you to carry the charger with four batteriesconnected.
All PAG chargers are designed to high electrical standards, with RFIcertification, and are suitable for use in all broadcast environments.
PAG charging systems automatically adjust to operate from AC mainssupplies worldwide.

Paglights Award-winning camera lights
The Broadcast Industry’s first dedicated camera lightThe Standard 12V Paglight was the first on-board camera lightdesigned specifically to meet the requirements of the broadcastindustry. PAG now offers a family of lights, designed to fulfil avariety of professional requirements, but sharing many of theunique features that made Paglight the industry standard.
Halogen, HMI and LEDPaglights are robust, light-in-weight, cool-running and fully-focusable. Their versatility has been achieved as a result of PAG’spatented plug-in lamp holder feature. This is best illustrated in theStandard 12V Paglight which is capable of tungsten halogen output,metal-halide arc and LED.
LED Technology has gradually improved, addressing the problemsthat early examples displayed, such as poor spectral distributionand colour temperature. Using improved LED technology, PAGoffers a plug-in LED option for the Paglight, to further increase itsversatility and provide you with the most economical LED solution.
Plug-in lamp holder options for this light also include Softstart, for use with Li-Ion batteries, and the power saving, regulatedPowerMax unit, which incorporates a dimming facility calledVariLux.
Smaller lights for smaller camerasThe Mini Paglight was introduced to suit the dimensions of thesmaller, digital camcorders. This miniaturised version of the 12VPaglight can be powered from a range of 12V to 14.8V batterypacks and belts. The plug-in PowerArc option makes the MiniPaglight the industry’s most compact yet powerful arc light.A Softstart lamp holder is also available for use with Li-Ionbatteries. The Mini Paglight can be mounted to the camerausing a variety of detachable power bases (see Page 25).
For users of small, handheld camcorders, whether professional orconsumer, the Paglight C6 Kit is an ideal solution. This high-quality6V system provides everything you need: Paglight, diffuser, dichroic, barn doors, battery and charger at a price to suit anyequipment budget (see Page 26).

Power Solutions for 7.2V to 8.4V Camcorders & DSLRs
Broadcast Power for HandheldCamcorders and DSLR CamerasPAG has developed a series of productsthat enable you to power 7.2V to 8.4Vcameras using a range of PAG batteriesincluding higher voltage PAG L95ebroadcast packs and Pagbelt NMHbelts.
There are three types of PAG DCAdaptor available. They allow you topower the camera using either:• 12V to 14.8V V-Mount or PAGlok
batteries• 12V to 14.4V PAG battery belts• The 6V battery supplied as part
of the Paglight C6 kit
PAG Down-Converter Leads foruse with V-Mount or PAGlokBatteriesThe DC Adaptor plugs into the batteryport of the camcorder, and into thePP90 power port of a PAGlok or PAGV-Mount Connector (see Page 31).These professional battery mounts canbe worn on a trouser waistband or belt,or fitted to the back plate of a PAGOrbitor camera stabiliser.
PAG Down-Converter Mounts foruse with PAGlok or V-MountBatteriesPAG offers a battery mount thatincorporates a built-in DC Adaptor forcertain camcorders. These mounts canbe fitted to the rear of the camcorder. They feature a PP90 output socket thatcan be used to power a 12V MiniPaglight or other 12V accessories.
PAG Down-Converter Leads foruse with Pagbelt NMHThese DC Adaptor leads connect to thecamcorder in the same way as the PP90model, but incorporate an XLR4connector that enables you to power thecamera from a 12V, 13.2V or 14.4VPagbelt NMH battery belt, worn aroundyour waist.
PAG Up-Converter Leads for usewith the C6 BatteryThese DC Adaptor leads are aimed atcamcorder users who don’t already own12V batteries and chargers, and whoare looking for an economic, all-in-onecamera power and lighting solution. The Paglight C6 Kit contains aprofessional quality on-board 6Vhalogen light, a 6V 8Ah Ni-MH battery, and a designated charger (see Page26). The appropriate DC Adaptor willboost the 6V output of the C6 battery topower the 7.2V to 8.4V camera, providing extended run-time. The samebattery can be used to simultaneouslypower the 6V Paglight C6. The DCAdaptor attaches to the camcorder viathe battery port. If you purchase anadditional C6 PowerPack with yourPaglight C6 Kit, you will be able to runyour camcorder and camera light fortwice as long, without stopping tocharge a battery.

UN TestingThe International Air Transport Association (IATA) in association withthe International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) and the UnitedNations (UN) set clearly defined rules regarding the air transportationof Li-Ion batteries.
From January 1st 2009, the 50th Edition of the IATA Dangerous Goodsregulations requires the independent testing of each type of Li-Ionbattery, not just the individual cells, to ensure that the design andconstruction are compliant with the stringent regulations. This is acostly process for the manufacturer, but it should assure you, thecustomer, that the battery design is safe and of the highest possibleprofessional standard.
PAG Li-Ion batteries have been tested and certified to comply withUnited Nations Specification ST/SG/AC.10/11/Rev 4. Copies of thetest reports can be obtained from PAG Ltd.
Air TransportationThe IATA regulations also affect individuals carrying Li-Ion batterieson-board civil aircraft, and influence the way they are classified, labeled and packed when transported as air cargo or by road freight.Restrictions are imposed on batteries that have capacities greater than100Wh.
PAG Ltd. hereby declares that PAG PL96, L95 and L95e Lithium-Ionbatteries have a watt-hour rating of less than 100 watt-hours. Thisrating is in compliance with Section 2.3.5.9 of the 50th Edition ofthe IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations (2009).
The following information will assist you when travelling with orshipping Li-Ion batteries:
Transport by Commercial Airline / Personal Luggage
