Presidents Report

Good afternoon everyone, 2012 was an innovative year for the Sia-mese Cat Society with a share of high points and hurdles which only brought us together as a group of dedicated breeders and

lovers of the Pure Siamese Cat as we know them today.

The 2012 Siamese Cat Society Show was held as a joint show with the Siamese and Shorthair Cat club. While successful, not enough emphasis was given to our wonderful Pure Siamese Cats and kit-tens. If a joint show is to be held in the future, a lot more discus-sion and planning needs to be taken into consideration before such a future show is held. On a lighter point I wish to take the op-portunity to congratulate all the members with their Siamese and non-Siamese cats and kittens that won awards against a very strong turnout on the day. I would also like to thank members that turned up on the day prior to help set up and take down after the show. I would also like to thank members that were able to get sponsorship for our show with a special mention to Valda McDer-mott for her tireless work on the phone. A special mention also to Jeanette Rositer from OZ-PET for her very generous sponsorship

which was greatly appreciated by all winning competitors.

As you all maybe aware the NSW CFA, our current governing body, has made a change to their rules regarding the registration of Siamese Cats and kittens. And as President I would like to place emphasis on the need for breeders of pure Siamese to keep up this tradition so as to protect these precious lines that breeders before us have worked for years to achieve. Our pure lines are

sought after over seas and the need to protect them is paramount.

I wish to thank the current Committee for their hard work and dedi-cation in these innovative times with special mention to our Secre-tary Penny Richardson who is always on our back trying to get things organised, Mary Piper our public relations and editor of Fe-lis always does a fantastic job at delivering an interesting journal, lastly our hard working Treasurer Chris Wiseman for her thankless

task of keeping our finances in check.

Thank you to everyone for attending today and please remember if you wish to make a suggestion for change please contact your

committee so they can be tabled at a relevant meeting.

We had a terrible year all in all. As you all know the Cat Fanciers Association of NSW Inc decided at the request of a handful of Colourpoint breeders to change the registration of our pure Sia-

mese resulting in all Group 2 pointed cats are classified as Siamese.

Our members protested this decision to no avail. The Management Committee of the CFA had

changed the whole data base to remove the words “Colourpoint” from their records.

We tried to abide by the Constitution of the CFA:

“Resolution of Internal Disputes

18. (a) Disputes between members (in their capacity as members) of the association, and disputes between members and the association, are to be referred to a community justice centre for mediation in accordance with the Community Justice Centres Act

1983.”

Although we contacted the CJC and requested mediation with CFA, the CJC contacted CFA sev-eral times, but this was refused point blank by the CFA. They can’t even follow their own Consti-

tution.

An email was sent to all financial members of our Society asking if we should remain members of NSW CFA or move to The Feline Association (TFA) and 19 members voted in favour of moving to

TFA with seven members against the move.

The TFA will be happy to accept the Club as a member with the only requirement being that all members of the Executive (President, Secretary and Treasurer) be members of TFA. Other mem-bers can be members of CFA. Tony Hurry has investigated the pedigrees and it has been agreed with TFA that they will put the American CFA codes on our pedigrees denoting the pure Siamese

cat.

It has been a tumultuous year with the Society being split on the CFA/TFA question but hopefully this will be a thing of the past this coming year and we can return to normal again. The TFA are more than happy for us to have our own Siamese Cat Society show date and venue of our choos-

ing.

VOLUME 57 June 2013 Page 5

The old classic "one human year equals seven cat years" is an easy way to calculate and relate to your cat's age, but isn't entirely accurate. The feline stage of life (kitten, adolescent, adult, sen-ior) determines the comparison between human and cat years.

As a general rule of thumb, a cat who is 8 to 10 years old and older should be considered mid-dle to senior aged, and a consultation with your vet is in order to determine the best health care maintenance program for your cat as s/he ages.

What things should I expect as my cat ages?

Each cat, like each human, is different. Here are some general things to watch for as a cat ages.

Slowing down - Admittedly, this can be hard to discern for many cats! You know your cat best -- do you notice any of the following:

sleeping more than usual?

Not wanting to climb the cat condo as

much?

Any difficulty groom-

ing the "hard to reach" areas?

Difficulty going up or down the stairs, jumping up or down off of favorite perches, etc.?

Reduced hearing - Cats can experience hear-ing loss. The loss may be barely noticeable, or, as in the case of some cats, the hearing loss can be total. Always have your vet examine your cat's ears if there is question of hearing loss -- to rule out parasites, infection, growths in the canal, or other medical problems that could interfere with normal hearing.

Cloudy or "bluish" eyes - Like dogs, cat's eyes often show a bluish transparent "haze" in the pupil area. This is a normal effect of aging, and the medical term for this is lenticular sclero-sis.

Vision does not appear to be affected. This is NOT the same as cataracts. Cataracts are white and opaque. Vision can be affected by cataracts,

and your vet needs to be con-

sulted.

Care tips for S.C.’s

… Senior Cats!!

Thinning of the iris - Also known as iris atro-phy, some cats eyes, particularly those lighter in color, may appear to be "moth-eaten" as they age. This does not appear to affect vision, but some cats may become more light sensitive. Increased pigmentation in the iris may indicate a risk for malignant iris melanoma, and should be checked by your vet.

Muscle atrophy - Mild loss of muscle mass, especially the hind legs, may be seen with old age. If your cat is having trouble walking, see your veterinarian. Some cats with Diabetes Mel-litus can have nerve problems and become "dropped in the hocks" and have trouble walk-ing, see your vet if your cat is having trouble standing or walking.

When is it time to see the vet? Regular veterinary examinations are important for overall health at any age. Annual examinations are the norm, but more frequent exams may been needed, based on your pet's health. As a cat ages, it may be easy to chalk up a new behavior or health

issue as "just old age", but be on the alert for new behaviors and activities (or lack of activity) - these can be clues to your cat's overall health.

The following list denotes signs that should be seen by your veterinarian as soon as possible.

Change in appetite - Any change in appetite - eating less or eating more - should be checked out by your veterinarian. Many illnesses can cause a loss of appetite.

A fairly common age-related disease of cats that can cause an increase in appetite is Hyperthy-roidism. This condition is caused by a tumor of the thyroid gland, which is benign 98% of the time.

Cats can exhibit many signs with this condition, including, but not limited to: weight loss (may be extreme), increased appetite, vomiting, in-creased heart rate, increased activity levels (old cat suddenly acting like a kitten again). There are treatments available for this condition.

Page 6: Page 1 FELIS - Siamese catsiamesecatsociety.com/forms/felis/June 2013 issue.pdf · The Siamese Cat Society Cat (breed 24) of the Year this year results are: Male Cat - CCCA Gd Ch

Cognitive Dysfunction - Cats, like people, can ex-perience age-related dementia. There is a veteri-nary medication for dementia available that may help some cats. Most of the studies and data on this condition and medical treatments for it are for dogs, but information on cats is available, too.

This list isn't all-inclusive. If your cat is "not himself or herself", then it is time for a check up at the vet-erinary clinic!

How can I keep my pet more comfortable in his

senior years?

♥ Regular checkups and communication with your vet will ensure that you are doing all that you can medically to help your pet enjoy the senior years.

♥ To help your pet at home, here are some pointers:

♥ Provide a comfortable clean bed - there are many "orthopedic" beds available now at pet supply stores to ensure comfortable rest.

♥ Provide fresh water daily (note changes in wa-ter consumption) and a healthy, age-appropriate diet.

♥ Ease distractions - senior pets can be easily

startled by or become fearful of:

♥ kids, loud noises,

and general com-

motion as they

age.

♥ Conditions such as arthritis can make

the cat fearful of getting hurt (or the

potential to get hurt) with sudden

movements of kids or being stepped

on.

VOLUME 57 June 2013 Page 6

If your cat has exhibited any of the above signs, see your vet for an examination. Cats should be fed a diet appropriate for their age and general health (some cats require special or prescription diets).

Change in urine output and thirst - Cats should not drink more water simply because they are old, it is summer time, or the heater is on in the winter. The most common causes of increased water intake are kidney disease and Diabetes Mellitus problems. Urine leakage or having "accidents" out of the box also signals problems, either with infection, loss of sphincter control, or other underlying disease.

Bad breath, bleeding gums - Good dental health is important not only for the teeth and mouth, but overall general health! Bad breath happens to cats, too. Tartar, tooth loss, and oral ulcers are usually the cause of bad breath, and painful as well. Oral cancers, infections, meta-bolic diseases (kidney disease, Diabetes Melli-tus) are also potential causes for bad breath and

oral health problems.

Arthritis pain - There are many medications available today to help ease the pain and discom-fort of arthritis. See your veterinarian to discuss what medication is right for your pet.

Sudden blindness, hearing loss, head tilt / staggering - These signs can be seen with a va-riety of causes - infection, poisoning, age-related, cancer, etc. and your vet should be consulted to find the cause and begin any necessary treat-ment. Note: some cats can develop cataracts in just a few days, with sudden onset diabetes. See your vet as soon as possible.

New Zealand environmental ad-vocate launches campaign to

ban cats as pets Published January 22, 2013 Associated Press Fox News Associated Press WELLINGTON, New Zealand – Gareth Morgan has a simple dream: a New Zealand free of pet cats that threaten native birds. But the environ-mental advocate has triggered a claws-out back-lash with his new anti-feline campaign.

Morgan called on his countrymen Tuesday to make their current cat their last in order to save the na-tion's unique bird species. He set up a website, called Cats To Go, depicting a tiny kitten with red devil's horns. The opening line: "That little ball of fluff you own is a natural born killer."

He doesn't recommended people euthanize their current cats -- "Not necessarily but that is an op-tion" are the site's exact words -- but rather neuter them and not replace them when they die. Morgan, an economist and well-known businessman, also suggests people keep cats indoors and that local governments make registration mandatory.

Morgan's campaign is not sitting well in a country that boasts one of the highest cat ownership rates in the world.

"I say to Gareth Morgan, butt out of our lives," Bob Kerridge, the president of the Royal New Zealand Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, told the current affairs television show Campbell Live. "Don't deprive us of the beautiful companion-ship that a cat can provide individually and as a family."

For thousands of years, New Zealand's native birds had no predators and flourished. Some species, like the kiwi, became flightless. But the arrival of mankind and its introduction of predators like cats, dogs and rodents has wiped out some native bird species altogether and endangered many others.

"Imagine a New Zealand teeming with native wild-life, penguins on the beach, kiwis roaming about in your garden," Morgan writes on his website. "Imagine hearing birdsong in our cities."

But many New Zealanders are against the cam-paign. Even on Morgan's website, 70 percent on Tuesday were voting against making their current cat their last.

Morgan could not be reached on Tuesday.

And the science remains unclear. Some argue that cats may actually help native birds by reducing the population of rodents, which sometimes feed on bird eggs.

Morgan's separate personal blog, in fact, has a separate campaign to raise $1 million to eradicate mice from the remote Antipodes Islands, where rodents are the only predators.

A 2011 survey by the New Zealand Companion Animal Council found that 48 percent of house-holds in New Zealand owned at least one cat, a significantly higher rate than in other developed nations. The survey put the total cat population at 1.4 million.

In the U.S., 33 percent of households own at least one cat for a total of 86 million domestic cats, ac-cording to a 2012 survey by the American Pet Products Association.

Scientist David Winter said cats are indeed a prob-lem in New Zealand, having contributed to the ex-tinction of at least half a dozen New Zealand bird species. Writing on his blog "The Atavism," Winter said Morgan's campaign appeared designed to "start conversations."

Still, he added, "What hope is there for environ-mentalists in conversation where our side wants to take people's kittens away?"

God's Purr-fect Creation

When God created kitty cats, He had no recipe;

He knew He wanted something sweet, As sweet as sweet could be.

He started out with sugar, Adding just a trace of spice;

Then stirred in drops of morning dew, To keep them fresh and nice.

He thought cats should be soft to pet, Thus he gave them coats of fur;

So they could show they were content, He taught them how to purr.

He made for them long tails to wave, While strutting down the walk;

Then trained them in meow-ology, So they could do cat-talk.

He made them into acrobats, And gave them grace and poise;

Their wide-eyed curiosity, He took from little boys.

He put whiskers on their faces, Gave them tiny ears for caps;

Then shaped their little bodies, To snugly fit on laps.

He gave them eyes as big as saucers, To look into man's soul;

Then set a tolerance for mankind, As their purpose and their goal.

Benevolent ... and ... Generous, He made so many of them;

Then charged, with fatherly concern, The human race to love them.

When one jumped up upon His lap, God gently stroked its head;

The cat gave Him a kitty kiss, "What wondrous love," God said.

God smiled at His accomplishment, So pleased with His creation;

And said, with pride, as He sat back, "At last. . .I've reached purr-fection!"
