A CALL TO HISTORY, AWARDING THE CONTRACT, GROUNDBREAKING &
DEDICATION
By Armando L. Zanecchia, PGK, Council Historian
At a meeting of the Columbian Club Board of Governors on August 22, 1958, at the home of Re-on Hillegass, Jr., the following was discussed: E. Morgan: Reported on meeting with Lubin, McGaughy and Associates, attended by him and C. Cheshire, in regards plans for new building on old Ice House site and presented from the Ar-chitect. D. Rhodes: Read the Treasurer’s report as of June 30, 1958. Cash on hand $7039.59 with no outstanding bills as of that date. C. Hoggard (Consulting Engineer): It is the consensus of opinion that the Ice Plant building is be-yond economical repair and the building should be demolished. R. Hillegass motion and D. Rhodes second: Take steps to demolish old Ice House as soon as possible. Motion carried. General Discussion: It was agreed that due to the limited backing we have, purchase of any oth-er location is out of the question. It was further agreed that an all out membership drive should be begun at once to increase the council membership; initiate a car raffle to increase revenues, and immediately proceed with building on the Ice House site. On January 16, 1959 a letter was received from Brother Frederick (Bingo) Stant addressed to the President of the Columbian Club, Brother Ernest A. Morgan, which read in part: “This is to advise that the City of Norfolk has passed an ordinance closing Peachtree Street and part of Government Avenue so that the Columbian Club now owns one-half of that whole Hugh Street running to the North of the property…
City of Norfolk-ORDINANCE NUMBER 19,743 BE IT ORDAINED by the Council of the City of Norfolk:
Section 1: - That that portion of Peachtree Street in the City of Norfolk lying between the extension of the southern line of Government Avenue, across said street with a radius of 1,377.40 feet from a point in the western line of Peachtree Street distant 354.63 feet northwardly from the northwestern corner of Cherry Street and Peachtree Street, to a point in the eastern line of Peachtree Street distant 128.69 feet northwardly from the northwestern corner of Cherry Street and Peachtree Street, is hereby closed, vacated and discontinued as a public street of the City of Norfolk, said portion of said Peachtree Street not being needed for public use and travel.

The Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus will meet on Thursday, March 7th for their monthly meeting. We will have a speaker sharing her experience as a cancer survivor. Also, the ladies are asked to bring in plastic eggs and pre-wrapped candy to fill the Easter eggs for our annual Easter Egg Hunt for the kids on Sat., March 30th. There will be a sign-up sheet in the bar soon. All children and grandchildren of the members of #3548 are welcome to participate. Anyone interested in joining our group is welcome to come on the 7th. Many thanks to the ladies who have brought or purchased baked goods for the Fri-day night fish fry. We sell raffle tickets and this is our main moneymaking source. So, if you come to the dinner, it would be appreciated if you bring some goodies for the raffle. None needed for the 22nd as they will be serving dessert and all profits go to KOVAR that night. thanks
It’s that time of year again, time to give our annual tribute to the council and Su-preme and State council. If you have not received your statement for the year, please contact the Financial Secretary (Chris Klotz) at 587-1295 or [email protected]

Officiating was Father M. P. Manzo, Chaplain, and among those present included Ernest A. Morgan, President Columbian Club and Edward P. Brogan, the Grand Knight. The closing prayer was said by the Right Rev. Monsignor M. J. Cannon, Pastor, Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Despite a blinding snowstorm, dedication of the new home of Father Robert B. Kealey Council, Knights of Columbus, Ocean View, took place as scheduled on Sunday, January 28, 1962 at 2:30 PM. As the American Flag was raised by Navy members of the K of C., the three principals in the dedication ceremony proudly watched: Ernest A. Morgan, presi-dent of the Columbian Club, Right Rev. Msgr. Michael J. Cannon, who officiated, and Grand Knight Robert J. Koch. Dr. Edward Millan, State Deputy and Dr. Vincent Cornetta, District Deputy also took part. At last Father Robert B. Kealey Council #3548, Knights of Colum-bus, had its own home.
