Oregon Trail: 2,000 mile trail stretching through the Great Plains from Missouri to Oregon

Santa Fe Trail: important trade trail west from Missouri to New Mexico

Mormons: member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

Bringham Young: settler of the Western United States; President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1847 until his death in 1877

Manifest Destiny: belief shared by many Americans that the U.S. should expand from the Atlantic to the Pacific

James K. Polk: 11th President; led U.S. to victory in Mexican American War

Vaqueros: Mexican cowboys in the West who tended cattle and horses

Californios: Spanish colonists in California in the 1800s

Bear Flag Revolt: revolt against Mexico by Americans in California who declared the territory an independent republic

Gadsden Purchase: U.S. purchase of land from Mexico that included the southern parts of AZ and NM
