The Maltz Jupiter Theatre has earned 19 nomina-tions for the 38th annual Carbonell Awards, SouthFlorida’s equivalent of the Tony Awards®.

The Theatre garnered the most nominations ofany of the nominated organizations, surpassingnominated theaters in Broward, Miami-Dade andPalm Beach Counties. “We are honored that we are being recognized forour eclectic spectrum of work – including two dra-mas (Dial M for Murder and Doubt: A Parable) andthree classic, re-envisioned musicals (Annie,Thoroughly Modern Millie and Singin’ in theRain),” said Andrew Kato, the Theatre’s producingartistic director.

As in years past, the Theatre finds itself with mul-tiple Carbonell nominations in four categories, meaning that some of its shows are competing againstone another. Scenic Design, Dial M for Murder). “I credit much of our success to the local and

national artists – including actors, directors, musicaldirectors and designers – who contribute their cre-ative talent to our productions,” Kato said. “There isremarkable work being produced here in SouthFlorida, and we’d like to congratulate all of the artistsand designers who have been nominated, particular-ly our newly eligible theatres.”

Critics raved about the nominated shows, includ-ing: “Truly a showstopper!” (South Florida GayNews, for Singin’ in the Rain), “One of the best pro-ductions of Thoroughly Modern Millie you will eversee.” (Examiner.com, for Thoroughly ModernMillie); “The power of this play and the cast wasundeniable.” (The Miami Herald, for Doubt: AParable); “The perfect mystery!” (The Jupiter CourierNewsweekly, for Dial M for Murder); and “A five starproduction!” (Florida Media News, for Annie).

The news comes on the heels of a $2.5 millionexpansion and renovation and a record-breakingsubscription season with 7,611 subscribers.

“We promise that our next season of shows willcontinue to bring our audiences a wide variety ofexhilarating programming,” Kato said.

And the Theatre’s current season is far from over,as the stage heats up with the hot, new Tony-nomi-nated play Other Desert Cities (February 16 –March 2). Closing out the season is the classicRodgers and Hammerstein musical The King and I(March 18 – April 6).

In my last article I discussed the importance of beingAWARE. I explained the need for being able to recognizeindividuals and environments that make you feel uncom-fortable or present a clear threat to your safety, and avoidthem. The next step in your Personal Safety Strategy is toBE PREPARED!

Think about situations you may face and develop aPersonal Safety Strategy for dealing with them. Perhapsyou have decided to arm yourself with some type ofpersonal protection device, such as pepper spray or aTASER® weapon. Having them in your pocket orpurse may make you feel better, but are you truly pre-pared to use them? I remember asking a woman toshow me her car keys. She spent a great amount of timedigging through her purse to find them. If you have todo this for your personal protection device, theencounter will be over before you can implement yourPersonal Safety Strategy.

If you carry a large purse and are exiting the store atnight, have your hand in your purse with the personalprotection device in your hand and ready for use. Onceyou arrive at your vehicle and you are certain there is noimmediate threat to your safety, release the item and

immediately retrieveyour keys to enter thevehicle. (I pray you willnot have to dig forthem.) Once in the car, lock the doors.

Regardless of thestrategy you choose foryour personal safety, Iurge you to think aboutit. During what kind ofsituation would mystrategy be used? Am Iwilling to implementmy strategy? What kind of response do I expect to seewhen I do place my personal safety strategy into action? Many of these questions may be answered during propertraining, but I will address this in my next article.

IRS Warns of Tax-time ScamsBy Jim Olsen, CPA

It’s true: tax scams proliferate during the income taxfiling season. This year’s season opened on Jan. 31. TheIRS provides the following scam warnings so you canprotect yourself and avoid becoming a victim of thesecrimes:

Be vigilant of any unexpected communication pur-portedly from the IRS at the start of tax season.

Don’t fall for phone and phishing email scams that usethe IRS as a lure. Thieves often pose as the IRS using abogus refund scheme or warnings to pay past-due taxes.

The IRS doesn’t initiate contact with taxpayers byemail to request personal or financial information. Thisincludes any type of e-communication, such as text mes-sages and social media channels.

The IRS doesn’t ask for PINs, passwords or similarconfidential information for credit card, bank or otheraccounts.

If you get an unexpected email, don’t open any attach-ments or click on any links contained in the message.Instead, forward the email to [email protected]. For moreabout how to report phishing scams, go to:www.irs.gov/uac/Report-Phishing and for phishingscams involving the IRS, visit the genuine IRS website,IRS.gov.

Here are several steps you can take to help protectyourself against scams and identity theft:

Don’t carry your Social Security card or any docu-ments that include your Social Security number orIndividual Taxpayer Identification Number.

Don’t give a business your SSN or ITIN just becausethey ask. Give it only when required.

Protect your financial information. Check your credit report every 12 months. Secure personal information in your home. Protect your personal computers by using firewalls and

anti-spam/virus software, updating security patches andchanging passwords for Internet accounts.

Don’t give personal information over the phone, through the mail or on the Internet unless you have ini-tiated the contact and are sure of the recipient.

Treasure Coast Food BankHosts Educational Luncheonsto Mark 25 Years of Service

You may not realize that the meals we eat have a his-tory as rich as their taste. As the Treasure Coast FoodBank (TCFB) commemorates 25 years of providingsustenance, security and hope to people in needthroughout the Treasure Coast, the organization isreflecting on its past while exploring the history of foodand the people who have influenced what we eat.

To continue its long tradition of raising awareness ofhunger in the community, TCFB is hosting two edu-cational luncheons and presentations in February. Theevents, titled “An Uncommon History of AmericanCooks and Meals,” feature Barbara Haber. Haber is anotable food historian, author, editor, James BeardFoundation Awards Board Member and colleague ofJulia Child.

Haber, one of America's most respected authoritieson the history of food, will put this extraordinary sub-ject on the table as she views food as a lens throughwhich we can examine our country’s history. She’ll pro-

Business Briefs

vide a historical perspective of the people who havetaken charge of food in our country and made noblecontributions to their communities, whether by collab-orating to create community cookbooks for charity orby serving as volunteers in the Civil War to help nour-ish wounded soldiers.

“Having Barbara Haber educate us as we celebrateour 25 years of community service will set the tone forthe years ahead as we move toward our collective visionof a hunger-free Treasure Coast,” said Treasure CoastFood Bank CEO Judith Cruz.

What began with a small group of faith- based vol-unteers in 1988 has grown to become the region’s onlyfood bank and the largest hunger relief organization inthe area. As TCFB marks a quarter century of service,it is preparing for the increased need in the future. Thefood bank took an important step in meeting thisincreased demand for services by completing the reno-vation of a new 35,000 square-foot food distributioncenter in Fort Pierce.

But, there is still more work to be done. “With more than 100,000 people facing hunger each

and every week in our area, it is essential that we com-bat hunger not only with food but with educational andother hunger assistance programs to help individualsand families gain long term food security,” said Cruz.

“An Uncommon History of American Cooks andMeals” luncheon is one of many ways TCFB will becelebrating its 25th anniversary. The events are beingheld in Vero Beach at Holy Cross Catholic Church onFebruary 26 and in Stuart at the Blake Library onFebruary 27. Both luncheons will take place 11:00amto 1:00pm. Tickets are $50 per person with all proceedsto benefit the food bank. Sponsorship opportunities arestill available. For more information or to register, email [email protected] or call 772-489-3034 or goto stophunger.org.

Treasure Coast Food Bank is the only food bank andlargest hunger relief agency on the Treasure Coast, securing millions of meals and providing them to peo-ple facing hunger through a network of more than 200local food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and otheremergency food providers throughout Indian River, St.Lucie, Martin and Okeechobee counties. In addition tofood distribution, Treasure Coast Food Bank providesnumerous programs that not only solve the immediateproblems of hunger, but help individuals and familiesgain long-term food security. The two most hated words for sales people that haveto prospect Cold Calling! Some people call it coldwalking, knocking. The bottom line is we are all goinginto an environment where they are not expecting usso it is cold.

My first experience with cold calling, knocking, walking, whatever you want to call it was when I wasfive years old and we just moved to Florida. I went toevery home in my development knocked on the doorintroduced myself and asked them if they had anykids I could play with. First of all this was in 1974 andour development was brand new and we only hadabout 20 homes built. I would not recommend that

for any children this day and age. Fast forward, fiveyears and at the ripe old age of ten years old, I startedknocking on doors for business. I became a very suc-cessful card and stationery salesperson. I started withmy neighbor and worked my entire development andcontinued from there.

I must admit I have made some of my biggest sales bycold calling and I used to really enjoy it and even today, don’t mind going out hitting the streets or tackling thephone with some good old-fashioned cold calling. Whywas I successful at cold calling? This is actually a two partanswer. Number one, I had no choice, in some businessit is necessary to get your pipeline filled and get someactivity going. Number two, is that I have a plan.

Cold Calling Objective: To set an appointment and/orqualify

Pick the times that you are going to cold call and putit on your calendar.

When I first started selling office equipment I coldcalled three days a week. I would cold call in person from9:00am and finish up around 12:30. I would drive to the

office, eat lunch at mydesk (or in the car on theway to the office) andstart hitting the phonesby 1:30pm until6:00pm. When phonecold calling, pick a verti-cal market and stick toit. When cold calling inperson, pick an area orzip code you are going totarget and stick to ituntil you are finished.Work the complete areabefore moving on to the next one.

Tracking the cold calling is vital to it being of anyvalue. It is important to have an electronic customer rela-tionship managing system in place. This will allow you tofollow up properly on any cold calling you may be doing.

You cannot rely solely on cold calling to build yourbusiness. You must do other activities. The best form ofprospecting is networking and building your referral part-ner team.
